Breaking the mold of the stereotypical swirling and sipping event, Cambalache will provide guests with an immersive experience of the country’s best wines and intriguing lifestyle. The word Cambalache, literal meaning in Spanish ‘bazaar’, was immortalized in the 1934 Argentine slang language Tango song of the same name. Used at the time as a provocative commentary on society, in modern Argentine vernacular it describes something that is chaotic, haphazard, full of contrast and contradiction and above all exciting…epitomizing the heart and soul of the country. This event has been developed to embody these contrasts, with each experience that guests encounter. These events include: WINE To celebrate Malbec World Day* guests will be able to sample over 120 wines from 26 of the top Argentine wineries. Each winery will be pouring a selection of world renowned Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Blends and Torrontes. MUSIC AND WINE PAIRING Tasting food and drink has become much more of a 360 sensory experience. It is no longer just about smell and taste but also about sights and even sounds. Recent studies have shown that certain types of music can greatly enhance the way wine tastes. For a truly immersive tasting experience guests will be treated to an auditory and oenology experience hosted by distinguished Oxford professors Barry Smith and Charles Spence. Charles, a specialist on sound and taste interaction, helped UK celebrity chef, Heston Blumenthal develop one of his signature dishes, where he invites diners to wear headphones and experience the “Sound of the Sea” while they eat. I N C E L E B R A T I O N O F M A L B E C W O R L D D AY W E P R E S E N T 1940s STYLE COCKTAIL LOUNGE Even though drinking wine in Argentina is a long-standing tradition, the European contemporary locals love cocktails. New York’s Malbec House will create stunning 30’s and 40’s style cocktails such as Sol de Mayo and Mar del Plata. The Lounge is a reflection of bars found throughout old Buenos Aries and will be art-deco themed inspired by the old-school glamour of Argentina. EAT AND DRINK LIKE A REAL PORTEÑO Of course, we couldn’t forget about Argentina’s most famous food – steak. Sur Empanada Factory & Bakery will offer guests the simple pleasure of delicious Argentine food including empanadas (cooked pastries with meat and vegetable fillings,) choripan (chorizo sausage sandwiches,) and Argentine steak sandwiches that all have been cooked on a traditional Argentine parrilla (barbeque.) Then wash it down with a bottle of Quilmes, Argentina’s local beer. STREET ART SOCIALISING Argentina’s turbulent history has produced an extraordinary urban art culture with a unique language. City walls have become a channel for public expression. After the economic crisis of 2001, groups of artists went out to paint in order to inject positivity and energy into the streets. The result was incredible, and shows the powerful effect street art can have on a culture. Argentina is unique in that artists often paint huge murals as communities. At Cambalache, three of the most provocative street artists – Cabaio Stencil, Roma and Tec – will paint a live mural in the outside space, as they would in their own uninhibited city. NUEVO TANGO Music forms a massive part of the Argentine culture, and none more so than Tango. In the last 20 years, a more modern form of tango has emerged called Nuevo Tango – a Tango that has evolved with young people’s tastes and contemporary styles. Guests will be able to enter a modern day Milonga (place to dance Tango) and with a fashionable electronica soundtrack get to watch, learn and take part in this famous dance with some of the leading Argentine tango dancers today from Strictly Tango. SPEAKING LIKE AN ARGENTINE Argentines love to talk and they communicate directly, openly and often loudly. Their freedom of speech can be uninhibited and forms a strong part of their passionate identity. To truly immerse oneself in Argentine life, one needs to learn the art of street slang otherwise known as “lunfardo”; an entirely different language, combining words with crazy expressions and gestures. Guests will be treated to a master class from James Bracken, the author of the cult book “Che Boludo: a Gringo’s guide to understanding the Argentines.” I N C E L E B R A T I O N O F M A L B E C W O R L D D AY W E P R E S E N T TEA AND TEXTS Argentina has a rich history of literature and has produced world-class writers and poets, especially between the 1930’s and 60’s. One of Argentina’s most famous writers, Jorge Luis Borges was so celebrated because he wrote about every day life for an Argentine: their struggles, passions, behavior, etc. Many locals love to gather in cafes to sit, read and talk about their favorite books. In homage to this aspect of Argentine culture, guests will be able to pour through old Argentina books and listen to excerpts from Borges’ most famous book of short stories, The Aleph. ICE CREAM PARLOR There is a massive Italian influence in Argentina and this is no more apparent than in the number of ice cream shops that overflow in each town and city. Argentines absolutely love their ice cream, especially the famous dulce de leche (sweetened milk) flavor. Guests will be able to taste the real Italian connection with New York’s Cones serving their sweet ice cream treats. LIFE IN THE COUNTRY Argentina isn’t just about Buenos Aires. In fact, we’re here because of the wines, which are produced mainly amongst the stunning backdrop of the Andes Mountains on the western boarder of the country. Many people’s image of Argentina lies in its vast open plains where you find numerous Estancias (ranches) that are tightly linked to the history and essence of Argentine lifestyle. The Gauchos (cowboys) rule the roost here and they have a very keen sense of tradition. Guests will be able to experience Gaucho life and sample Argentina’s other signature drink; mate (a traditional South American hot drink made with dry yerba mate leaves.)
