ALPENDURADA MOnastery
RÉGUA
Porto’s History dates back to the 4th century,
to the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Porto is Portugal’s second largest
city and was registered as a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO in 1996. It is famous for its medieval historical
centre as well as giving name to its well known export,
Port Wine. You may visit the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia
and stroll through the Ribeira’s narrow streets.
The Alpendurada Monastery was founded during the
11th century. It has a unique medieval atmosphere
and high historical and cultural value. Comprised of
a chapel, halls with Arab influence, arcades and stone walkways it surrounded by a forest with abundant
fauna.
Existing since the Roman occupation, Régua was primarily
developed during the 18th century, Marquês do Pombal
era. Backed by Marão mountain chain, Régua is the official
centre of the Port Wine growing region. A must-see is the
Casa do Douro, where the history and production of Port
Wine is depicted in its stained-glass windows.
Quinta da Avessada
Avessada is a traditional Port region, working
Wine Quinta and a 6th Generation family
business primarily producing sweet Muscatel wine. It houses a wine education, touring
and tasting center and its remote location
makes it a popular place to celebrate in traditional Douro fashion with wine, food, song
and dancing.

period and, in the 3rd century BC, experienced
Hannibal’s siege. The Old City was declared

Douro River are part of the Douro’s experience.
Along the river you will pass through the dams of
Crestuma/Lever, Carrapatelo, Bagaúste, Valeira and
Pocinho. Of special note is the dam of Carrapatelo one of the largest in Europe, with a 35m water
level difference.
Its origin dates back to Roman times. It was reconquered from the Moors in
1057. Lamego takes a special place in History for its artistic heritage and natural beauty. Here one should visit the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Sanctuary
