Our journey starts with a two-night stay in Lisbon, Portugal at the Hotel Tivoli Lisboa. You will enjoy a panoramic city tour of this beautiful city featuring the Tower of Belem & Jeronimos Monastery, a UNESCO site and have free time for sightseeing or shopping. After our visit to Lisbon we transfer by motorcoach via Coimbra to Porto, Portugal where we embark our ship, the luxurious Viking Hemming which was especially constructed for cruising the Douro River. We spend the next eight days on our ship visiting quaint towns along the river route. Enjoy wine tastings, Flamenco and Fado shows, a traditional bakery, Mateus Palace and Gardens, a full-day excursion to Salamanca, Spain and much more. Eight guided tours are included. The daily shore excursions include must-see highlights and delightful surprises. These expertly guided tours bring you close to the art, architecture, history and people of the land. The Viking Hemming was built in 2014 has a capacity of only 106 guests and a crew of 36. Saturday, May 7 LISBON (B) After breakfast, we have a city tour including the Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery and the Monument to the Discoveries. Much of Lisbon’s old city dates back to the age of naval heroes. Evening is at leisure. Sunday, May 8 LISBON-PORTO (B,L,D) Following breakfast, we travel to Porto via motorcoach. En route we will visit Coimbra University and have lunch at a local restaurant. Upon arrival in Porto, we board the Viking Hemming and enjoy a reception followed by dinner. Monday, May 9 PORTO (B,L,D) Porto is Portugal’s second largest city and is known for its beautiful old city center, it’s dramatic location on the banks of the Douro River and perhaps more than anything else, its famous port wine, which made the vineyards of the Douro Valley known around the world. We will visit a port wine cellar to learn about the production while sampling it at the same time. We will also tour the old city town. This evening we will have a special dinner at Alpendurada Monsatery with a Fado concert. Tuesday, May 10 REGUA/PINHAO (B,L,D) Today we have an excursion to Lamego and the Sanctuary of Our Lady a pilgrimage site situated high above the Douro River. This magnificent baroque edifice towers over a spectacular staircase decorated with the typical Portuguese panels of blue on white tile depicting various biblical scenes. In Pinhao we have a Quinta de Sexio excursion with wine tasting and a Portuguese folkloric music show. Wednesday, May 11 SCENIC CRUISING (B,L,D) This morning enjoy cruising on the Douro. This afternoon we have an excursion to Castelo Rodrigo in Barca d Alva. Thursday, May 12 BARCA D’ALVA (B,L,D) Full day excursion to Salamanca, Spain. Home of the oldest university in Spain, Salamanca is known as the cradle of the Spanish language and it remains a college-town atmosphere. UNESCO awarded it a World Heritage Site for its beautiful buildings and intact urban landscape. You will have the opportunity to explore it’s ancient streets and listen to Spain’s traditional flamenco music during lunch. Friday, May 13 SCENIC CRUISING & PINHAO (B,L,D) Today we visit a traditional bakery and guided museum tour. Lunch or dinner at Quinta da Avessada with wine tasting in the Douro Wine District a UNESCO site. Saturday, May 14 REGUA (B,L,D) Enjoy a guided tour of Mateus Palace & Gardens in Vila Real. Designed by an Italian architect and completed in the 18 th century for a wealthy family of wine growers. It is one of the most beautiful baroque palaces and gardens in all of Europe. This evening Captain’s Farewell Reception & Dinner. Sunday, May 15 PORTO-HOME (B,D) This morning we disembark the Viking Hemming and transfer to the airport for our flights home.
