Rabelo Boats
Mateus
Invented in the 18th century, the Rabelo boat was once used
to transport barrels of port wine from the vineyards of the Douro
Valley. Due to the perilous nature of the Douro, these distinctive
flat-bottomed boats were designed to safely deliver precious
liquid cargo down the river. Though no longer used to transport
wine, the Rabelo boat remains a traditional symbol of port
winemaking.
Mateus is a sweet and fizzy rosé wine produced in Portugal.
Created in the 1940s near the end of World War II, Mateus is
known for its distinctive narrow-necked, flask-shaped bottle,
unique “baroque historic mansion” label and cork stopper. Crisp
and refreshing with a delightfully bubbly texture, Mateus is
popular around the world and is referred to by name in a song
by Elton John.
