Rams look to capture another conference title

BOONVILLE — After an emotional
loss to Swaim County in the first round
of the NCHSAA playoffs last season, the
Starmount Rams are looking to get back
on the field and improve on last season’s
record. With a renewed passion, the Rams
are looking to capture another MVAC
title.
“Our main goal this season is to win the
conference championship and we want
to improve week-to-week on offense and
defense,” said Head Coach Scott Johnson.
“Of course we always want to go back to
the State Championship.”
Two years ago the Rams made it to the
NCHSAA State Championship where
they went head-to-head with football
power house, Wallace-Rose Hill. The
Rams fell 34-21, but they kept their postseason momentum going into last season
where they accomplished a 7-2 overall
record and a 5-2 conference record. The
Rams tied for first in the MVAC, and
made it to the first round of the NCHSAA
playoffs.
Along with the new season comes new
players, new strategies and a younger
group of athletes. Johnson is no stranger
to rebuilding years as a head coach. He’s
been the head coach at Starmount for 12
years and he doesn’t plan on stopping
anytime soon.
“We have a small senior class again
this season, we have seven or eight this
year. The kids are enjoyable and they
do what they are supposed to do,” said
Johnson. “We have a youthful team as the
sophomores that we had last year are now
juniors, but they are still growing into
what they need to be. We usually have 12
to 16 seniors, so having two back-to-back
small senior classes is a little strange.”
Offensively, the Rams are returning
several key players who make a difference
for the Rams on and off the field. Junior,
Patrick Usher will be the starting quarterback this season. Last season he played a

be leadership, but so far the team has
come together to show support for one
another before the season starts.
“The biggest thing about this group
of kids is that they are a great group to
be around,” said Johnson. “This group
enjoys being with each other day in and
day out. They are a tremendous group of
kids to coach.”
Starmount opened up its season versus
Mount Airy on Aug. 19, from there they
will host East Surry on Aug. 26, then
Forbush for the Unifi Bowl on Sept. 9.
The Rams will be honoring past and
present football players this season during each home game, as Starmount High
School and the football program both turn
50-years old this year. At each home game
there will be a variety of different members of the football team, cheerleading
team, sideline volunteers, and announcers honored throughout the 2016-2017
season.

few games as a sophomore under Andrew
Smythers, but this season he will be the
main quarterback for the Rams and help
carry the team to the playoffs. Senior,
Henry Stone will help the Rams on offensive again this season, as last season he
accumulated 108 receiving yards. Junior,
Peyton Mullins also will be another
athlete to keep an eye on this season on
offense, last season he scored six touchdowns for the Rams.
Although Starmount is still strong on
offense, it lost three of its leading rushers — Brandon Prescott, Trey Lomax and
Andrew Smythers. This season Johnson
knows he’ll have to improve the offensive
line to get the MVAC title.
“This season we are looking to improve
our offensive line with a few changes. We
had a lot of sophomores on last season’s
line so this season they are bigger and
stronger,” said Johnson. “Our defensive
line will also be improved from last season.”

Year 2 looks promising
North Surry hopes to contend for WPAC title in ‘16

North Surry football coach Danny Lyons didn’t
know how his team would fare in its first year after
an offensive overhaul.
Lyons is about to enter his fifth season as the man
in charge of the Greyhounds, but last year he made
an intense change to his coaching scheme. North
Surry transitioned from a traditional I-formation
base to a pass-happy spread offense tabbed as “AirRaid.”
The change turned out to be a positive one. North
Surry (7-5) finished third in the conference, made
the NCHSAA 2A playoffs for the first time since
2012 and even produced the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year in quarterback
Avery Smith.
Last year’s success has brought deserved confidence to the North Surry football program as it
enters the 2016 campaign. No longer adapting to a
new system, the Greyhounds are ready to take the
next step and upend their local rivals while also challenging the likes of West Stokes and Carver for the
WPAC title.
“We were tickled last year with how the season
went, but really I think we were a few plays from
being 9-2 instead of 7-4,” Lyons said. “We got things
rolling again, but we could have been better, and I
think that has our guys hungry this year.”
Lyons will have a proven star returning at the
quarterback position. Smith led the WPAC with
2,439 passing yards and 36 total touchdowns, and
he believes North Surry’s rapport with the offense
could lead to even bigger things this season.
Not only has Smith improved this offseason, but
he believes he has become a smarter quarterback
with a firm grasp of the offensive playbook.
“We’re looking a lot better at this time of the season than we were last year,” he said. “Our receivers
are all on the same page. When you’ve been running
the same plays for two years, it makes things pretty
comfortable.”
Smith did lose his favorite target, Colton Acord, to
graduation, but the Greyhounds are still deep with
returning talent at the skill positions in 2016. Smith
plans to spread the wealth a little better this season,
rather than feeding one receiver like he did.
Carson Todd, Chase Chandler and Reid Stanley
combined for 66 catches last season and should get
more targets from their quarterback this year.
Pairing with Avery in the backfield will be running
back Andrew Smith, who rushed for 1,017 yards
and nine touchdowns despite missing games due
to injury last year. Coach Lyons expects Andrew to
be a more consistent rusher this season and backup
Sammy McMillan will continue to help North Surry
provide balance on offense.
“We had balance last year, and I think that’s something that people don’t realize. The running game
could take another step forward this year with both
of those guys getting a year older and if our guys up
front start to jell,” Lyons said.
The guys up front potentially hold the key to
North Surry’s season. Avery Smith’s ability to run
helps his offensive line, but Lyons wants Smith to
have the luxury of more time in the pocket this year.
The unit struggled against good defenses like West
Stokes and Mount Airy, and three starters graduated
in June.
However, Lyons has confidence the two returners
could combine with his youth up front to become a
stronger offensive line this season, in due time.
“Varsity is just a different speed,” Lyons said. “I
think it might take two scrimmages and some nonconference games for some of these guys to settle
in.”
The two returning linemen are guards Dustin
Young and Ryan Eldridge. Young will be the only
senior on the offensive line.
At center will be junior Alex Gudino, who played
that position for the junior varsity team last season.
The remaining two tackle spots are still an open
competition among Hunter Crouse, Jared Tickle,
Holden Huff and Carson Mauldin.
On the other side of the ball, Coach Lyons is excited about the potential of his defensive line, and it all
starts with weak-side defensive end Nic Huff.
As a junior last season, Huff was third on the team
in sacks (3.5) and tackles for loss (11). He can rush
the passer and stop the run, and Coach Lyons isn’t
afraid to challenge him with some high expectations.
“Nic can be the most dominant defensive lineman
we’ve ever had,” Lyons said. “He’s just got to bring
it every play, and if he does that, he can be great. I
think he’s taken that challenge head-on.”
Surrounding Huff on the starting defensive line
will be Hank Ward and Dylan Stokes. Crouse, Elijah
Odum, Chase Brintle and Zack Akers should all see
time on the line as well.

New faces, same expectations for Cardinals

PILOT MOUNTAIN — At this time last
year, the East Surry football team was preparing for a 2015 burdened with enormous
expectations.
The Cardinals’ roster was stacked with
experienced seniors on both sides of the
ball, and East Surry had its best shot in
years to bring a state championship back
to Pilot Mountain.
Head coach David Diamont’s team ran
the table in the regular season and entered
the playoffs with those same high hopes,
but East Surry’s title dreams came to a
close in a 28-14 loss to conference rival
Walkertown. The Cardinals closed the year
with a tremendous 13-1 record, but two
wins shy of their lofty goal.
As East Surry prepares for the 2016
campaign, there is a distinctly different feel
among the Cardinals. Youth has replaced
experience, but that doesn’t mean the Cardinals won’t hold themselves to the similar
standards set before this season. The new

way. Hull paced the Greyhounds with
110 tackles, the most by a North Surry
defender since the 2006 season.
Even with that impressive individual
performance last year, Hull knows
North Surry’s defensive success will
come down to its ability to work
together.
“We’ve just got to stay disciplined,”
Hull said. “People can’t try to do their
own thing, and if we attack as a team
we should be pretty good.”
Joining Hull as an inside linebacker
will be Nic Rodriguez, a player Lyons
described as one of North Surry’s best
JV players in 2015. On the outside will
be linebackers Avery Simmons and
Cody Gallimore.
North Surry’s secondary could be
another strong unit in the Greyhounds’
defense behind junior Darius Duncan,
players welcome the high expectations that
come with playing football for East Surry,
the two-time defending Northwest champions.
“I think in the eyes of other teams, we’re
being overlooked,” running back Joey Ray
said. “I like being the underdog. It’s one
day at a time, but we really believe we’re
going to make it three straight conference
championships.”
If the Cardinals are going to keep teams
like Mount Airy and Walkertown off the
throne of the Northwest, Ray is going to
play a major role. The junior tailback is
the only offensive player returning in 2016
who scored more than two touchdowns
last season. In total, he rushed for 1,135
yards and found the end zone 26 times in
2015.
Ray figures to be an even bigger part
of the East Surry offense this season, and
Coach Diamont is confident that Ray is
ready for the heavier workload.
“He’s worked phenomenally hard in the
offseason to make his body stronger and to
get quicker,” Diamont said. “What he did
last year as a sophomore was very impressive, and we’re going to need him to put up
some similar performances this year.”
Joining Ray out of the backfield will be
halfback Mitchell Edwards and fullbacks
Jose Juarez and Colt Bullington. The Cardinals hardly used fullbacks last year with
their depth of receivers and devastating
passing game, but Diamont hasn’t ruled
out a return to his more conventional
I-formation in 2016.
Running the offense under center will
be junior quarterback Connor Sheets. The
lefty gained minimal experience last season backing up 2015 Conference Offensive
Player of the Year Tyler Smith, and only
attempted two passes. Still, Diamont has
confidence in Sheets’ ability as a thrower,
and also believes his quarterback will cause
problems as a scrambler and runner this
season.
Backing up Sheets will be fellow junior
Trevor Hauser, who started for the
East Surry junior varsity team last year.
Diamont expects both players will see time
on defense this season, so it is imperative
they are both prepared to lead the offense.
“Both those guys would work hard in a
dark room by themselves,” Diamont said.
“They’re that good of people, and they’re
both making significant strides.”
Wide receiver might be the biggest hole
for East Surry, with Jack Shabdue’s six
catches providing the most experience
coming back in 2016.
Joining Shabdue will be senior Andrew
Hooker, juniors Austin Pardue and Nick
Hicks, and sophomore Logan Ray. Like the
fullback spot, playing time for tight ends
was hard to come by last year, but seniors
Blake Marion and Garrett Barker are sure
to get some passes thrown their way this
season.
The unit East Surry has been most
impressed with this offseason is the offensive line. All-Conference center Logan
Moore headlines the group, along with
returning senior guard Luis Suarez. Will
who produced a team-high four interceptions and 17 deflections last season.
“Darius is a guy we’re going to put
on the other team’s best wide receiver.
This year we even feel like we could
leave him alone with no help over the
top, and that could really help us defensively,” Lyons said.
Duncan will see time as a receiver as
well this season, and another two-way
player, Andrew Smith, will be the other
cornerback for North Surry.
Stanley returns as a starting safety
this season and is the vocal leader of
the defense. The other safety spot is
still an ongoing competition, but sophomore Clay Shumate seems to have
the inside track with some impressive
performances over the summer.
The special teams unit returns starting kicker Izzy Garcia, but sophomore
Ethan Evans is battling with Garcia
for the starting position. Gallimore
will serve as the punter for the Greyhounds.
Things get under way for North
Surry on Aug. 19 with a road game
against the Ashe County Huskies. The
Greyhounds will play six non-conference games before challenging the two
best teams in the WPAC, Carver and
West Stokes, in the first two weeks of
conference play.
North Surry hopes to compete with
the Wildcats and Yellow Jackets for a
WPAC championship this season, but
Coach Lyons won’t allow his team to
look too far ahead.
“We just have to take things day-byday,” Lyons said. “I think when you
start looking at the big picture, you
leave out some of the small details that
can take care of the big picture. We’ve
got to trust the process.”

EAST BEND — Forbush football has struggled to
maintain a good football team in the last 10 years.
Last season, the Falcons had a 5-7 overall record,
and a 2-3 Western Piedmont Athletic Conference
record. In the WPAC, Forbush placed fourth with a
.400 win percentage. The last time the Falcons won 50
percent of their games was in 2013 when the Falcons
went 6-6 overall. The last winning record was in 2004,
when the Falcons were under Coach Pat Mitchell and
had a 12-2 season.
This season, Head Coach Chris Johnson got straight
to the point when asked what his goals were for this
year’s team.
“Our goal this season is to have a winning record,”
said Johnson. “Forbush hasn’t had a winning season in
the last 10 years.”
For Forbush to get that winning record, it will have
to come up strong on defense and offense. Last season the Falcons had the players, and the size needed
on the defensive line, but they came up short where
it matter most. Forbush had no fear on the defensive
line, as the team’s approach was to come out big and
to come out strong. This season, the Falcons are bigger and stronger on defense with the help of defensive
linemen Zane Johnson and Louden Hundley; linebacker Tanner Gregory; and defensive back Austin
Mendehall.
Johnson is one of the main players for the Falcons as
he plays both ways, as a running back and a defensive
lineman. Last season, Johnson had 971 rushing yards
and 14 touchdowns. With nine returning starters, the
Falcons are on a direct course for a winning season,
they just have to over come a few bumps along the
way.
“We will be similar to last year in our approach on
offense,” said Coach Johnson. “We’re expecting to be
faster and more aggressive on defense.”
Quarterback Jackson Cooper looks to lead the team
on the offensive side once again. Cooper has been
a driving force for the Falcons since he became the
starting quarterback. Last season Cooper had 450
passing yards, and 705 rushing yards. Other notable
players to keep an eye on this season are: OL/DL John
Basilio, TE/LB Cory Evans, RB/LB Omar Montalvan,
WR/DB Shane Hutchens, and OL Tanner Moore.
The first match-up of the season was against Elkin,
who the Falcons opened up their season with last year
with a 28-7 win. From there the Falcons face a few
tough match-ups with North Iredell, North Wilkes,
Starmount and East Wilkes. The Falcons will need to
show up on both sides of the field in order to maintain
a winning record this season.

to be as big as some of the other teams,
but we’re definitely going to be stronger
than we were last season.”
The Buckin’ Elks are looking to improve
on different areas that they struggled with
last season that kept them from winning a
few more games. The running game, and
the defensive game were not up to par for
the Elks as the year before they had a great
running game. On special teams, the Elks
have a new kicker in Cory Wiles. Wiles is a
senior who has played baseball at Elkin for
three years and decided to give football a
chance this season.

difference for us this season on special

The quarterback position is in the hands
of junior Beau Burgess. Burgess stands at
5’10 and played last season in the quarterback position for the Elks. He has the
speed and the ability to run the ball, if
needed, for the Elks.
“We have three returners from last year’s
team and we have three new seniors who
haven’t played before,” said Wood. “Jackson Carter is a four-year starter for us so
we’re looking for him to step-up this season. We only have two seniors who have
had significant starting time for the varsity
team.”
Early in the season, the Elks will be
tested in the nonconference realm. They
came up against Forbush for the first game
of the season. The Falcons tested the Elk’s
line-play and show them where they need
to improve on the defensive line and the
offensive line before moving on to the next
games against North Surry and Mount
Airy. The Elks first home game will be
Sept. 9 as they take on Surry Central at
7:30 p.m.
“We think we’re better at this point in
the year than we were last season,” said
Wood. “We’ll just have to see how it goes.”

Cardinals looking to replicate last season’s success

RONDA — After a strong 2015 season, the East
Wilkes Cardinals are looking to make a deeper
drive into the state playoffs this year. The Cardinals went 13-1 in the regular season, and 7-0 in the
Mountain Valley Athletic Conference last season.
With an undefeated conference record, the Cardinals were able to make it to the third round of the
NCHSAA playoffs before falling to Mitchell, 17-14.
It was the second time in school history the Cardinals had made it to the third round of the playoffs.
This season, Head Coach J.K. Adkins doesn’t
want this group of kids to look too far into the
future, he wants them focused on their week-toweek match-ups and be present in the moment.
“Our main goal is the same as any season, for us
we’re trying to focus on each week and each game
as it comes,” said Adkins. “We are focused on winning and preparing for each week’s match-up by
doing what we always do. We’re going to do what
we can to prepare for our upcoming opponent, and
not worry about any future games until the week of
those games.”
This year’s team will look a little different than
last year, as the Cardinals lost 18 seniors from last
year’s team. The loss of the seniors won’t stop the
Cardinals from carrying the momentum over from
last season’s run. The Cardinals are looking strong
offensively as well as defensively.
This season there will be new players to watch
on offense, as the Cardinals lost two star receivers
in Camon Bryan and Andrew Nance. Although
they lost two players who helped carry the team,
the Cardinals are returning six starters on defense
and six starters on defense.
“We’re unique in the way that we have several
standout players, we don’t have just one or two
superstars on the team who are irreplaceable,” said
Adkins. “We have a returning running back, Devin
Couch, who we are also relying on this season. We
also have a couple of receivers, Jared Wood, Joah
Logan, Jared Poplin and Damien Reid, who are
going to be outstanding for us.”
Last season Wood caught 14 passes for 321
yards, and was selected as All Conference for the
MVAC. Logan had an outstanding playoff run for
the Cardinals as he had two touchdowns and ran
for 73 yards. At 6’1, Logan has the height and the
power to be one of the star receivers the Cardinals
need to replace Bryan and Nance.
Junior Bryce Vestal will be returning as this
year’s quarterback for the Cardinals. Last season
Vestal was put in at quarterback after starter Chris
Ward took on an injury early in the season. Vestal
took his new starting position in stride as he had
723 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and two interceptions for the 2015 season.
On the defensive side, the Cardinals are looking
strong with a pair of seniors who have stepped
up to become leaders of the defensive line. Last
season Andrew Elmore played linebacker and lead
the team in tackles with 75 tackles, while Adam
Holbrook played defensive line and had 78 tackles.
On special teams, Carlos Aquino will be returning
as the kicker. Last season Aquino made several
crucial field goals to keep the Cardinals’ undefeated
season alive.
“We have a lot of role type players,” said Adkins.
“We are counting on those players to produce for
us this year and get us to where we were last season.”
While East Wilkes did lose a big chunk of its
team from last year, Adkins is confident it can replicate last season’s success. If it’s up to this year’s
team, they hope to bypass last year’s success and
bring home a State Championship for Ronda.

“Everyone is stepping up,” Suarez said.
“I think the whole offensive line is hungry
and playing really physical this year. We
know we don’t have to get our names in
the paper as long as we know we did our
job.”
Defensively, the Cardinals have a little
added pressure coming into the season.
With so many departures on the offensive
side of the ball, it will be difficult for East
Surry to average 45.1 points per game
again this season.

a new identity in 2016, defensive coordinator Randy Marion doesn’t envision needing to make many changes to his multiple
defense for the upcoming season.
The success will start up front with three
returning players. Suarez and Moore bring
experience to the interior of the defensive
line, and Barker, an all-conference selection
last year with three sacks and 44 tackles,
will join newcomer Russell Varner as the
defensive ends this season.
“That’s where it all starts,” Marion said.
“If you want to have a strong suit early in
the year, you definitely want it to be your
defensive line.”
At linebacker, Bullington, Hauser, Chris
Cosgrove and Stephen Creech will all see
time. Coach Marion was concerned coming into the first week of practice with this
young group’s communication, but he’s
been impressed by Cosgrove’s ability to
step in as the vocal leader of the defense.
The rising senior was third on East Surry
with 69 tackles in 2015.
East Surry’s secondary will comprise of
four players who earned playing time last
season, even though they didn’t start for
the Cardinals. Shabdue, Hooker, Edwards
and Sheets all return, but Coach Marion
admits he will need to find playing time
for freshman Stephen Gosnell, who shined
over the summer and through the first two
weeks of practice.
Edwards will see a majority of his time
in the secondary, but Marion won’t be shy
about taking advantage of the sophomore’s
versatility and using him in a variety of
roles on the defense.
“Mitchell’s one of those guys we can
put wherever we need him,” Marion said.
“He’s a very imposing kid, and from one
week to the next, other teams are going to
know where he’s going to play.
The special teams department will feature all fresh faces for the Cardinals this
season. Ryan Sutterby and Peyton Chaney
are battling to replace the ultra-reliable
Devon Goble as East Surry’s placekicker
this season. Sheets and Hauser, the two
East Surry quarterbacks, are also battling
for the starting punter spot this season.
All of these new roles for the Cardinal
players has Diamont excited for the start of
the season. One of his favorite parts about
being a high school football coach is developing talent, and East Surry will get to test
that development this season.
“Honestly, we don’t know how good we
can be this year,” Diamont said. “We think
we’ve got some kids who can get the job
done, but it’s going to become more clear
once we start going at it with other teams
and facing some adversity.”

Ashe prepares for season opener

WEST JEFFERSON — The season has arrived for
the varsity football team and this year might be a little
different for the Ashe County Huskies.
Ashe has just nine seniors and will have to have a lot
of players playing both ways with fewer than 30 players
on the varsity squad.
“We’re a very young group this year. We’ve been
lucky the last couple of years with 22 and 16 seniors,
this year we’ve got nine,” said head coach Brian Hampton. “But this is a hard working group of guys and a lot
of fun to be around.”
With the smaller numbers on the team, staying in tip
top shape will be more important than ever.
“We’ve done a lot more conditioning than we have
the last few years. Our guys understand they’re going
to be on the field a lot more and understand they’re
going to have to play both ways,” Hampton said.
“We’re going to have to stay on top of our conditioning
throughout the year.”
Offensively, the Huskies do return a lot of talent at
the skill positions. Senior quarterback Colin Ellis will
have Skye Sullivan in the back field at running back
and will have several weapons to throw to including
all-conference wideout Judd Price as well as Grant
Thompson, Jake Richardson, Matthew Greer and
Corbin Coldiron.
On the line, Ashe will rely a lot on Ethan Shepherd.
“Ethan is really the leader of the offensive line. We’ve
got a lot of guys on the line that are going to be really
young” said Hampton.
Jesse Kemp, Logan Richardson, Travis Dillard,
Hunter Knight and Tyler Harmon are all underclassmen who will see plenty of snaps on the line. The Huskies will also have the services of senior Will Taylor up
front who did not play last season due to an injury.
Defensively, the Huskies did lose several key players
including Alex Richardson, Luis Ramos and Garrett
Miller to name a few. However, the defense still has a
good amount of talent ready to shut down opposing
teams.
“We’ve got three starters returning at linebacker
with Tristen Jones, Matt Greer and Sam Henson and
another guy with varsity experience in John Reavis,”
Hampton said. “Jake Richardson on the line played a
lot last year, we’re expecting him to step up and be a
leader on the defensive line.”
So far during the first few practices, Ben Graybeal
and Dylan Little have also impressed the coaching
staff on the defensive side of the ball. Little is playing
football after spending the previous two seasons on the
varsity soccer team.

“Defensively, we’ve got some potential to be pretty
good, we’ve just got to keep improving each day,”
Hampton added.
Having a limited roster size will make staying
healthy even more important and hopefully for the
Huskies, the team can dodge the injury bug this season.
“You’re always worried about injuries, there’s always
going to be a few key guys that you worry if they go
down, what are we going to do,” Hampton said. “With
our low numbers we’re definitely concerned about injuries, but at the same time, you just have to go out there
and play. If something happens, you just have to have
someone else step up.”
The Huskies opened the season at home against
North Surry Aug. 19.

Eagles seek redemption in ‘16
20 seniors hope to make up for injury-riddled 2015 campaign

DOBSON — Call it a case of mistaken
identity.
Surry Central’s football team appeared
to be on its way to a successful season
last Sept. 18, when it did something the
Golden Eagles hadn’t done in a generation. On that day, Central thrashed county
rival Mount Airy 20-0, winning its second
straight game after opening the season
0-3 against a difficult schedule.
At that point, one could have gotten
good odds that the Eagles were on their
way to their second winning season in a
row and a third straight year of earning a
berth in the 2A state playoffs.
It didn’t turn out that way, and a lot of
people couldn’t understand what had hap-
pened.
The problem was that the Surry Central
team that declawed the Granite Bears on
that September night was never at full
strength again all season.
“We had some injuries,” said head
coach Monty Southern. “The game after
the Mount Airy game, we lost one of
our skill players, Martin Palacios, for the
rest of the season. Then the game after
that, we lost one of our starting inside
linebackers, Chase Mosley, for the rest of
the season. Between moving some guys
around and moving up some JV kids to
take their spots, we dropped off just a
little bit.”
It took several weeks for the Eagles
to rediscover a winning combination in
the absence of two key players. In midOctober, they played rival North Surry
close for three quarters, hammered South
Stokes, and then played playoff-bound
Forbush and conference champ West
Stokes agonizingly close in the final two
games of the regular season. Central actually led the Wildcats in the fourth quarter
of the regular-season finale before falling
27-23. The Golden Eagles had battled
back to become a good team again — but
it was too late to salvage the season.
“I thought Mount Airy and West Stokes
at the end of the year were our two best
games,” said Southern.
Fortunately, there are many reasons to
believe that the Golden Eagles who took
the field this Aug. 19 against East Surry
will resemble the ones who battled the
Bears and Wildcats, rather the version

that floundered at midseason.
The coaching staff welcomes back 17
of the 22 starters who made up last year’s
team, including both Palacios and Mosely
(a senior lineman and linebacker). Surry
Central will be loaded with experience
and senior leadership, with 20 of the 36
players on the roster in their final season.
“Last year’s senior class was a smaller
class, but this senior class is the biggest
I’ve ever had,” said Southern. “A lot of
these guys have been up since they were
sophomores, and a couple have been up
since they were freshmen. It’s the most
experience we’ve had in a long time.”
Essentially, all the Eagles will need to
do is replace a few linemen, and they will
return, at full strength, every other key
performer on last year’s team, only now a
year older. And they believe this is their
year to make some noise in the Western
Piedmont Athletic Conference.
“We’ve set some goals,” said Southern.
“They want to compete for a conference
championship. We’ve played every team

in our conference really tough, but we’ve
yet to beat West Stokes or Carver. We’d
like to get over the hump and compete for
a championship this season. They definitely want to make the playoffs, and they
want to advance in the playoffs.”
A good start on that quest would be a
healthy season from Palacios, a 5’9”, 190pound junior who played both offensive
and defensive back for Central last fall.
Before going down with an injury in week
five against Salisbury, he averaged 5.8
yards per carry, 13 per pass reception,
and was playing outstanding ball on the
defensive side as well.
“He is a major impact player for us on
both sides of the ball,” said Southern. “He
was a big threat on offense and defense,
and he has been a starting corner for two
years. When we lost him, we lost a good
cover guy.”
Senior quarterback Chandler Johnson,
who made it through the entire season
and put up solid numbers in spite of the
injuries around him, will be the first twoyear starter under center for the Golden
Eagles in several years.
“It’s the first time in about nine years
that I’ve had a returning starting quar-

terback,” Southern said. “We’re looking
forward to that.”
Joining Johnson and Palacios in the
Surry Central backfield is senior running
back Eric Ramirez, who was all-conference a year ago. Another all-conference
performer up front will be lineman David
Peña, who plays on both sides of the ball
and earned all-WPAC honors as a defensive lineman last fall. Peña is one of two
all-state Golden Eagle wrestlers who will
be anchors on the offensive and defensive
lines. Peña, the third-place winner at 285
pounds last winter, is joined up front by
fellow senior Kaleb Dunn, who placed
fifth overall at 195. Although both are
known more for their prowess on the mat,
both are also fine football players.
In a sense, many of the Eagles’ seniors
will be looking for redemption after last
year’s disappointment. Two years ago,
the coaching staff had brought several of
them up to varsity and watched them play
key roles in a seven-win campaign that
ended in a state playoff berth.
“We’re looking for big things out of a
lot of guys. A lot of these seniors are kids
we pulled up as sophomores, and they
weren’t just up watching, they were play-
ing in the games,” Southern said. “Martin
(Palacios), Peña and Dunn have all been
up since they were freshmen. To be a 2A
school without a lot of football tradition,
we feel like defensively we’ve got as much
depth as we’ve had in a long time.
“We were a little up and down last
year. We never played a good game on
the road. We talked about that in the offseason, being more mature and handling
playing on the road better. Other than the
East Wilkes game, we were very strong
at home, but we never did play anywhere
near our potential on the road. Whenever
we get on that bus, our mentality has to
be the same as if we were getting ready
for a home game.”
Southern is confident that the Eagles
can recapture the promise of 2014 and
last year’s win over Mount Airy, if they
can just stay focused on the road and stay
healthy.
“I think our conference will be really
good again, but we can compete with
everyone,” he said. “Hopefully we can
stay injury free. We have a great group of
kids and I enjoy coaching them.”
