ANNUAL REPORT The American College of Financial Services 2015 Dear Friend, By just about any measure, 2015 was an extremely successful year for The American College of Financial Services thanks in large part to the consistent commitment of you and our many other supporters. • We served 26,707 students—an increase of 8.8% over 2014. • RICP®, our flagship retirement income program, saw student enrollment grow to 8,533. • Our first PhD students are moving into the dissertation phase of their work. • Total scholarships awarded through the Penn Mutual Center for Veterans Affairs exceeded $1 million. • We received nearly $9 million in charitable gifts and pledges, including a pledge for the largest gift in the history of The American College of Financial Services. To say I am proud to lead this institution is an understatement, but the real joy for me during my first full year in this role has come from the relationships those of us at The College enjoy with so many exceptional individuals. The American College of Financial Services is about heritage and about people like you who care deeply about this profession. I had the privilege of meeting with students, alumni, and friends at events across the country, such as the President’s Tour, the Knowledge Summit and Alumni LIVE. Their pride in our institution was palpable, and they were eager to share that enthusiasm with me. They also shared the kinds of successes that matter most—stories about how they are putting knowledge gained through The College’s offerings to work in their communities. One by one, they are elevating the financial services profession, most often by building sustainable advantages for their clients. This year reminded me that The American College of Financial Services is much more than the programs we offer. There is a sense of ongoing, important work—work that matters now and matters across generations. The torch is passed to us for a while, and we are responsible for nurturing the flame until we are ready to pass a stronger torch to the next generation of leaders. This is our time, and I want to thank you for partnering with us at this important moment as we strengthen that flame together. There are so many highlights from 2015 that make this flame even brighter. The record-breaking RICP® designation, for example, is part of a bigger retirement planning success story that we are featuring in this Annual Report. I also encourage you to read about a transformative gift from philanthropist Cary M. Maguire and the appointment of Michael Finke, PhD, CFP®, a nationally renowned educator and researcher, to the role of Dean and Chief Academic Officer. Another significant accomplishment in 2015 was our increased commitment to working constructively with other organizations in the profession. We held a national web event on retirement planning with the Society of Financial Service Professionals, have instituted content partnerships with AALU and GAMA International, and are partnering with FPA, WIFS, and other groups. We are truly better together in making a positive impact on the profession! 1 | The American College of Financial Services We plan to expand upon 2015 successes, with alumni networking opportunities across the country. Collaborative initiatives and events with partner organizations will increase. As a follow-up to last year’s Knowledge Summit, which brought together a record 3,500 alumni in Honolulu, be sure to look for details in coming months on our 2017 Knowledge Summit, which will take place in the Bahamas. Media interest in The American College of Financial Services was outstanding in 2015. Many of our faculty, who are sought-after experts in various disciplines, averaged multiple media contacts per week. This resulted in high-profile coverage in a variety of outlets, from Barron’s and Fortune to The New York Times. Our professors are also regular contributors to widely read publications such as Forbes, Investment News and The Wall Street Journal. Research conducted by our faculty also appears in high-profile academic and practitioner journals such as the Journal of Financial Planning, Journal of Portfolio Management and The Journal of Financial Services Professionals. All this raises the visibility of The American College of Financial Services and the excellent work going on here. I am sure the visibility of The College will continue to grow, along with our reputation, in 2016. These are exciting times for The American College of Financial Services, and I am confident 2016 will be another great year. Together we will continue to expand The College’s footprint— professionalizing financial services, and taking advantage of opportunities to bring our respected knowledge, ethics, experience, and leadership into other financial services sectors. At the end of the day, it is all about the people by our side, and those we serve. You simply cannot find a finer group of people than our staff, students, and supporters like you. It is a privilege to serve as President and CEO. Warm regards, Robert R. Johnson, PhD, CFA®, CAIA® President and CEO The American College of Financial Services Annual Report 2015 | 2 Leading The Way Through The National Retirement Crisis 2015 was an amazing year at The American College of Financial Services, which elevated its status as the national leader in retirement-focused research and education. The College’s star-studded team of retirement experts celebrated many notable achievements, including one that starts with an impressive number: 3,894. That is how many individuals enrolled in 2015 to become a Retirement Income Certified Professional® (RICP ®). That is an average of 10 new students every day. These numbers reflect a growing appreciation among financial services professionals that The College is the source for the latest thinking and techniques to serve their clients’ changing financial needs. The RICP® success also exemplifies the remarkable work being done at The College— strengthening its reputation as the go-to retirement income resource, and leading national conversations about this important subject. With an estimated 10,000 Americans reaching retirement age every day for the next 16 years, advisor education is a critical need in the retirement income planning profession. The American College of Financial Services remains committed to developing and delivering innovative programs that meet the needs of the changing financial landscape and enable advisors to access the latest research-supported knowledge about the complexities of retirement. “I am very proud of what we are accomplishing,” said Robert R. Johnson, PhD, CFA®, CAIA®, President and CEO of The American College of Financial Services. “We have a wonderful team, including faculty, staff, and external friends who are passionate supporters. Their generosity and commitment have enabled us to build a strong pracademic (combined academic and practitioner) foundation, upon which we are now building expertise in specialized disciplines like retirement income planning.” Johnson recalls being extremely impressed when he was hired as president in late 2014. He found a synergistic confluence of top-flight talent at The College. At the same time, the importance of retirement income planning continued to grow as a hot topic across the country. As the retirement landscape has changed with the shift to defined contribution plans, the reduction in employer-provided benefits and the challenging low-interest investment environment, everyone from financial advisors and their clients to economists and the media realize the need for better strategies, tools, and training. “There was, and still is, a crying need in the economy for better retirement income planning,” Johnson added. “There is a retirement crisis in this country. The baby boomer demographics, combined with advances in medical science, mean we have more people living longer than ever. They need specialized help with decisions that can really impact the quality of life in retirement.” The collaborative environment at The American College of Financial Services has helped fuel successes in the specialized retirement field. According to Professor of Taxation David Littell, JD, ChFC®, there were 56 practitioners, academics and experts across the profession who helped to build the RICP ® program. Faculty continues to update the curriculum to reflect the latest thinking and meet current needs among financial service professionals. Feedback “ Overall, it was an inspiring program. Society of Financial Service Professionals * Deceased + P roceeds received during 2015 In Memoriam Maxine Niemeyer 1920 - 2015 Trailblazer Maxine Niemeyer, MSM, MSFS, CLU®, ChFC®, died May 29, 2015. Niemeyer entered the financial services field early in her working career. In 1964, at a time when few women were part of the profession, she earned her CLU® designation from what is now The American College of Financial Services. She rose quickly through the ranks of Detroit’s Business & Estate Financial Coordinators, Inc., becoming a top producer and then president. Niemeyer went on to serve for over 20 years as the Michigan brokerage agency manager for Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance. When the ChFC® designation was developed, Ms. Niemeyer was a student in one of the first classes to earn that designation. She valued the singular education she received at The College, as noted in her own words, “In the 70s, our country went through tremendous problems caused by excessive inflation. The American College of Financial Services helped me keep up with the subsequent economic changes by creating and offering the ChFC® courses and designations... Our society is characterized by a better informed consumer and a significantly more complex and competitive financial environment. Now more than ever, the CLU® and ChFC® designations make a difference!” Maxine Niemeyer became the first woman elected to The American College of Financial Services Board of Trustees in 1981. The trustees honored her in 1994 with the Solomon S. Huebner Gold Medal, The College’s highest honor. Niemeyer also served as a leader on several other boards and received well-deserved recognition over her long career in the industry. 37 | The American College of Financial Services Companies, Foundations and Other Organizations The giving recognized below includes direct contributions as well as corporate matching gifts. $1,000,000 and More New York Life Insurance Company and New York Life Foundation $500,000 to $999,999 Northwestern Mutual and Northwestern Mutual Foundation $250,000 to $499,999 MassMutual Financial Group $100,000 to $249,999 Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and MetLife Foundation Prudential Financial and Prudential Foundation Securian Financial Group, Inc. $50,000 to $99,999 Pacific Life Insurance Company and Pacific Life Foundation pactera Saybrus Partners, Inc.
