When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. W.S. Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years, a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased. W.S. Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851 2 Enter the Zulu Kingdom Explore the roots of Zulu culture M any local Zulu people have maintained a traditional lifestyle in the Umgeni and Shongweni Valleys, giving the area a powerful sense of history and identity. The Valley’s beautiful landscape and strong sense of tradition have inspired many innovative and interesting styles of art and crafts, and it is guaranteed that the intricate, handmade works are unlike those you’ll see anywhere else. Community development is a major focus in the area. The Valley Trust has been involved in uplifting rural communities for over 50 years, and is a model of excellence for development initiatives throughout Africa. The Valley Trust works in the field of primary healthcare as well as empowering people from previously disadvantaged communities by creating jobs and providing them with opportunities. 4 Hospitality Charming Accommodation and Warm Hospitality T here is a wide range of accommodation in the area, from cosy cottages nestled deep in leafy suburbs to rooms with glorious views overlooking the Valley of 1000 Hills. The Valley has a variety of wedding and conference venues to suit everyone’s needs as well as budget. 5 Big Events T he Comrades Marathon, run every year between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, has become the world’s most renowned ultra-marathon. It owes its existence to a tough soldier named Vic Clapham, who, during the Great War of 1914-1918, fought and marched 1 700 miles across East Africa with the South African infantry in pursuit of Gen. Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck’s askari battalions. He decided to organise a marathon in memory of his comrades who suffered untold hardships during that epic march. The first Comrades Marathon took place on 24 May 1921, Empire Day, starting outside the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg with 34 runners. It has been held every year since then, with the exception of the war years of 1941-1945. The direction of the race alternates each year, the ‘down run’ being from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, and the ‘up run’ from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. 6 6 Big Events I nanda Dam is the venue for one of the world’s most gruelling sporting events, the Dusi Canoe Marathon. Starting in Pietermaritzburg, contestants must paddle and run for three days along the Umsindusi and Umgeni rivers until they reach the sea in Durban. This tough event is held every February and attracts competitors from around the world to take on the might of the Valley of 1000 Hills. T he Amashova Durban Classic is a cycling race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. This road race has three formats. The 106km race has surged in popularity over the last few years, with thousands of riders taking to the roads, cheered on by spectators as they whiz past. The race takes the riders through the heart of the Valley of 1000 Hills, The newest format is a 65km race that starts in Cato Ridge. Then there is the shorter 38km route starting in Hillcrest. All three races end at the Moses Madida Stadium in Durban. 7 Annual Events Every Saturday Shongweni Farmers & Craft Market, 06:30-10:30 Cell: +27 83 777 1674 • www.shongwenimarket.co.za August February BMW International Polo Classic • Tel: +27 31 768 1251 Dusi Canoe Marathon • www.dusi.co.za Tel: +27 33 394 9994 • Email: [email protected] Bridal Fair • Tel: 0861 113 997 • Email: [email protected] May Hill2Hill MTB Race • www.hill2hill.co.za Music in the Hills at Protea Hotel Makaranga Tel: +27 31 764 6616 Performance by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir (proceeds go to Kloof Rotary charity) October Kloof Conservacy Indigenous • Tel: 083 626 8684 Email: [email protected] June The Comrades Marathon • www.comrades.com July Art in the Valley • Tel: 031 7652572 Polo Cross World Cup • Tel: 074 891 6657 Email: [email protected] 8 Phezulu Trail Run (Winter) • 5km, 10km, 20km www.kzntrailrunning.co.za September Amashova Durban Classic • www.amashova.co.za Tel: +27 31 312 8896 Heritage Rose Festival • Tel: +27 31 765 5479 November King of Phezulu Trail Run (Summer) • 5km, 10km, 20km www.kzntrailrunning.co.za December Land Rover 50 mile Canoe Race Christmas Night Market • www.shongwenimarket.co.za Carols on 1000 Hills Choo Choo • www.umgenisteamrailway.co.za Relax and Rejuvenate Spa Treatments Treat yourself to a day at one of the 1000 Hills exquisite day spas and relax rejuvenate away from the busy environment.
