The 1000 Hills Experience
T
he Valley of 1000 Hills is named after the many
hills, cliffs and valleys that rise up from the
banks of the Umgeni River as it flows from the
distant Drakensberg Mountains to the Indian Ocean.
The diverse area combines the luxury of laid-back
country living with an ancient, indigenous culture on
its doorstep. The valley has been home to the Zulu
people for centuries, with many continuing to practice
and live out their unique traditional lifestyle.
The Valley
of 1000 Hills is KwaZulu-Natal’s doorway, situated close
to the beautiful beaches of the Indian Ocean as well
as the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands further inland. On
the crest of the hills overlooking the valley are leafy
suburbs and village centres, which have astonishing
views and a year-round holiday climate of warm
summers and cool winters.
These villages offer all the creature comforts one
would expect from a holiday destination, including
spas, B&Bs, fine dining, sophisticated shopping
centres, outdoor adventure and local arts and crafts
unique to the area. If you’re looking for a break from
the fast pace of everyday life or the exhilaration of the
outdoors, the Valley of 1000 Hills is the place for you.
We trust that you will enjoy your stay and come back
again and again.

Welcome to 1000 Hills

tart with a guided tour to one of our rural areas, where
one can learn about customs, beliefs, and general
way of life. Visit a ‘Sangoma’, talk with a village elder
or enjoy a local meal. You will come away having a better
understanding of the intricate culture of the local people.
The local Safari entity offers curio’s, a reptile park and one
can enjoy a traditional Zulu dance.
Relax at one of the great B&B’s or boutique hotels in the
area, visit any of a number of upmarket shopping centres
or dine at one of the specialty restaurants that are available
or even take in a live show. The adventurous can embark
on a nature trail, either guided or alone, through any of our
many Nature reserves. Alternatively try a little rock climbing,
canoeing or fishing at any of the three dams in the area. Horse
riding, quad biking, trail cycling or Groovy balls are all close
at hand. Take home a little of the 1000 Hills when you visit
the local craft markets and support the local weavers and
bead manufacturer’s. Annual events such as the Comrades
Marathon, the Amashova Durban Classic and the Duzi
Canoe Marathon all wend their way through this picturesque
area drawing visitors from across the globe. Every Saturday
morning the local ‘Farmers market’ takes place and is a must
for any visitor. Art galleries, botanical gardens, museums,
craft markets, micro breweries and a wealth of history of the
region scattered around the area. In all “We’ve got it’. On
certain Sundays, one can take a trip back in time on one
of the last remaining “Puffing Billy’s” that puffs through the
thousand hills.A short little snippet of what you can experience
when you visit 1000 Hills. We hope to see you soon.

History and Culture
Where the past and the present co-exist
F
rom the establishment of European settlers to
the vibrant Zulu culture that gives the area its
distinctive identity, the Valley of 1000 Hills has a rich
heritage.
When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in
1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated
area teeming with game.
W.S. Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851,
and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night
on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now
Kloof.
Within a few years, a wagon route opened up
between Durban and the interior, close to what is now
the Old Main Road.
The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields
with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in
the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic
through the 1000 Hills increased.
W.S. Field was one of the first
Europeans to settle in 1851

Big Events
T
he Comrades Marathon, run every year between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, has become the world’s most
renowned ultra-marathon. It owes its existence to a tough soldier named Vic Clapham, who, during the Great
War of 1914-1918, fought and marched 1 700 miles across East Africa with the South African infantry in pursuit
of Gen. Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck’s askari battalions. He decided to organise a marathon in memory of his comrades
who suffered untold hardships during that epic march. The first Comrades Marathon took place on 24 May 1921,
Empire Day, starting outside the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg with 34 runners. It has been held every year since then,
with the exception of the war years of 1941-1945. The direction of the race alternates each year, the ‘down run’ being
from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, and the ‘up run’ from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

I
nanda Dam is the venue for one of the world’s most gruelling sporting
events, the Dusi Canoe Marathon. Starting in Pietermaritzburg,
contestants
must paddle and run for three days along the
Umsindusi and Umgeni rivers until
they reach the sea in Durban.
This tough event is held every February and attracts competitors
from around the world to take on the might of the Valley of 1000 Hills.
T
he Amashova Durban Classic is a cycling race from
Pietermaritzburg to Durban. This road race has three
formats. The 106km race has surged in popularity
over the last few
years, with thousands of riders taking to
the roads, cheered on by spectators as they
whiz past.
The race takes the riders through the heart of the Valley of
1000 Hills, The newest format is a 65km race that starts in
Cato Ridge. Then there is the shorter 38km route starting in
Hillcrest. All three races end at the Moses Madida Stadium
