The UK’s biggest event for divers! DIVING EVENTS don’t get any better than the NEC Birmingham dive show, now approaching its 20th year as the UK’s biggest and most popular festival for divers. The show has earned an unrivalled reputation as a place where divers from around the world gather to advance their sport – to talk and to listen, to buy and to sell, to teach and to learn, to see and be seen. This year’s event, over the 30/31 October weekend, is set to be one of the most exciting to date, with hundreds of exhibitors and a tantalising line-up of guest diving speakers covering a wide range of hot diving topics (see below). Following their talks, there will be the chance to catch up with speakers on the show floor – where you’ll also find yourself surrounded by diving experts of all kinds, ready to help you learn more about the things that matter to your diving. Whether you’re thinking of booking a training course, planning a liveaboard diving holiday or buying a drysuit, there will be someone to advise, with new ideas, products and packages. There will also be guidance on specialist diving topics ranging from underwater photography to marine life identification. The Dive Show is all about meeting people, and if you’re thinking of visiting a particular destination, what could be handier than getting a heads-up from those who dive there regularly by dropping in on show stands such as those in the PADI Village. hitting the aisles. See their presentations – and catch up with them later on the Show Floor at Dive 2010! CONCOURSE SUITE 1 Packed to the brim with diving celebrities and experts, the main show sessions will focus on marine life, deep wrecks, cave diving and underwater exploration – in the UK and overseas. What more could you ask for in a Dive Show – and all the presentations are free of charge. 11.15 -12.15 Martyn Farr Darksite Diving – Classic Cavern & Cave-Diving Sites of Europe going back over the past 80 years. This film is at times uncomfortable to watch, and at other moments will produce laughter and gasps of disbelief – don't miss it! Leading British cavediver Martyn Farr's presentation represents his way of helping to open up what he calls "darksite diving" to everybody, by taking us on a tour of the best and most accessible locations to dive underground in the UK and Ireland, as well as continental Europe. CONCOURSE SUITE 2 11.30 - 12.30 Andrea Marshall Ray of Hope 12.30 - 1.30 Rich Stevenson A Decade of Deep Wreck Exploration Rich is one of Britain's best-known technical divers, and he has prepared a presentation that uses his career of diving a succession of iconic deep wrecks as a jumping-off point to track the development of technical diving. "I call it a decade, but in reality I'll be going back to the mid1990s, when I started technical diving," he says. Rich has been involved in some of the most challenging wreck dives of the technical era in the UK. 1.45 - 2.45 Paul Rose UK Oceans A woman at the forefront of research into big marine animals, Andrea proved a hit at LIDS this year with her presentation, which elaborated on her ground-breaking research work with manta rays at Inhambane, Mozambique. Since then she has been travelling around the world, learning more about mantas by means of her ground-breaking satellitetagging project. "I'll be sharing a lot of new information on the elusive giant mantas that I discovered at major aggregation sites around the globe," promises the Queen of Mantas, who recognises at least 700 manta rays purely by their markings. "Should be pretty exciting stuff!" says Andrea. 12.45 - 1.45 John Boyle Saving Nemo You can read all the fascinating background to the making of top underwater film-maker John Boyle's latest HD documentary in October’s DIVER Magazine, but in the UK only the Dive Show gives you the chance to see the preview of the 50-minute Saving Nemo. It's about the threat to anenomefish from the aquarium trade, a danger that was only aggravated by the animated film Finding Nemo 10 years ago."Twenty million clownfish worth $50 million will be taken from the wild this year," says John, who has recorded his subjects' life-style with his usual light touch, but has also visited the Nemo farms and illegal fish markets of Thailand. "A spin-off from the film is brand new scientific findings showing by DNAtagging that, after being hatched into the plankton, these tiny larvae actually find their way back to their home reef," says John. "Nemo really does come home!" 2.00 - 3.00 Lesley Rochat Shark Warrior Lesley is a former actress, TV presenter and swimsuit model from South Africa who turned down the offer of a Playboy cover – twice. She is also known as the Shark Warrior, as avid a conservationist as she is a diver. She founded the AfriOceans Conservation Alliance (AOCA), and launched a hard-hitting awareness campaign that included the tagging and release of aquarium sharks. Campaigns since have included "Rethink the Shark" for children, and her Blue Pulse Pictures production company has made many documentaries, including the award-winning Sharks in Deep Trouble. "I'm excited to be presenting to the Dive 2010 audience," she says. "My talk will include a selection of powerful imagery, including video footage combined into a multi-media presentation that invites the audience to rethink the shark and rethink the oceans." 3.15 - 4.15 Monty Halls Great Escapes Breaking news – those TV people have let Monty out temporarily so that he can come among us at Birmingham. "I'm a huge fan of the Dive Shows... they remain one of the absolute highlights of the diving calendar," says Monty. For his third series of Great Escapes, he's been working with whales and dolphins on the west coast of Ireland, so stand by for thrills! Note: All sessions, presentations and features may be subject to change without notice. The organisers accept no responsibility for the statements made in this preview, nor for any errors or omissions which may have occurred. SEMINARS ROOM 19 10.45-11.15 One of the busiest presenters around, Paul Rose is also one of the most energetic, as anyone who has seen his talks or met him at recent Dive Shows will confirm. Paul led the initial BBC Oceans TV expeditions, and became a Show attraction shortly afterwards. This year he has been working on a second series of Oceans, but this time the theme is British diving. So, like all British divers, he has been at the mercy of the weather – find out how wet he's been getting. 11.30-12.00 12.15-12.45 1.00-1.30 1.45-2.15 2.30-3.00 3.15-3.45 (SAT only) 3.15-3.45 (SUN only) 3.00 - 4.00 Richard Peirce Shark Attack Britain 4.00-4.30 When researching the film and book Sharks in British Seas, pro-shark campaigner Richard Peirce started discovering some surprising sharkattack stories around the British Isles. These ranged from the tragic to the weird, and the bizarre to the comic. For just £27.50, the policy would pay £50,000 in the event of a sport diving accident. To find out more, visit stand 845 or call Westfield on 01483 237827.
