One of these constants is the positive impact our programs have on the lives of the children and their families who depend on our support. Our mission is compelling and the business we are in is a serious one. Our team of staff, volunteers and the community have committed their time, talents and resources to ensure that the Double H Ranch continues to flourish now and into the future. Each helping to make our campers wishes come true year-round at the Double H Ranch. Double H is a blessed charity, but like most not-forprofits we must work tirelessly to meet our ambitious goals each year. Building financial sustainability and program capacity are paramount. As we strategically plan for the future, we are excited about the creative approach our team is taking for the enhancement of our organization, our community and most importantly, the amazing children that we are privileged to work with. Max Yu renda, C EO / Executiv e Direct or With continued strong Board leadership, a dedicated staff, generous donors and powerful volunteer base of support along with a dose of luck, we will proudly fulfill the wishes set out by Charley Wood and Paul Newman 18 years ago, and even more significantly, our amazing kids. 4 2010 Annual Report 5 Summer Residential Camp Just another day at the docks. As a part of the daily opportunities at the Ranch, a little fishing and a bit of boating are just what the doctor ordered. No twisting of arms necessary. 6 From the Body Shop: “This summer the Body Shop had a record number of campers spending the night. The amazing thing about a sleep over in the Body Shop is that the camper still gets to enjoy all the wonders of camp. As the nurses and doctors tend to their medical needs including administering IV medications and performing ongoing assessments, the counselors provide them with quiet camp activities. This can be a number of arts and crafts projects brought to the Body Shop, some singing of camp songs or just having some one on one time with their counselors. A camper is always accompanied by a counselor when he/she is in the Body Shop. The role of this counselor is to provide the love and attention a parent would provide if a child were at a clinic or hospital. Even though the Body Shop was a hub of activity this summer the majority of the time the nurses are on camp. Our goal is to meet the camper where they are at. If a treatment or medication can be given on camp then a camper does not have to leave an activity. You will find Body Shop nurses at all the program areas playing with the campers and having a great time. If you look close you will notice their Body Shop nametag designating them as a cabin nurse. Being on camp with the campers is the best place to watch over the campers and check in with how they are feeling. This past summer we also had a record number of campers learn to administer their own factor. Factor is a medication used by our campers with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. It is administered into the vein using a small butterfly needle. Many campers watch their bunk mates or their counselors self infuse and express an interest to do so themselves. It is truly remarkable to watch a camper learn to self infuse. The independence this gives them is astounding. There is no better place to learn than here at camp surrounded by folks who are also learning or who have been doing it for some time. Seeing the confidence in the eyes of a camper who has just learned this very important life skill is a true magic moment.” — Emo Castle, Nursing Director www.doublehranch.org There is no better place to learn (to self infuse) than here at camp surrounded by folks who are also learning or who have been doing it for some time. A Parent’s Praise: “All through Roman’s school years, we have heard how difficult he is. He has been restrained, hospitalized, isolated and hasn’t been in school for two years since he has had cancer. It brought tears to my eyes, when I picked him up and his counselors told me how much they loved him— no one ever tells us that. Thank you for giving him a chance and seeing what we see— a little boy who is desperate for friends, who loves to have fun and who tries so hard to be good. This is Roman’s week of the year. He loves it so and camp brings an otherwise lonely little person a wonderful chance to be just like everyone else. I can’t say enough. We wish camp could be every day.” — Camper Roman’s mom 7 Summer Program Statistics n Continuing a trend from previous years, the largest illness group served was Sickle Cell Anemia, making up approximately 30% of total children served each week. n The Medical Advisory Board approved the addition of two new diagnoses groups, VonWillebrands and Chrohn’s and Colitis; and Craniofacial Disorders were officially added to the medical breakdown. n The 4-day Alumni Program, helping our campers transition from camp into adulthood was reintroduced into the calendar, serving 75 young adults ages 17-22. n Hope Children’s Hospital in Chicago, IL, was added to the list of 30 hospital partners. Trailbound: there’s no better place to kick back than on a Ranch. Below: Whether performing for fellow campers and counselors, getting some artistic time with sidewalk chalk, or facepainting, there was fun to be had everywhere in 2010. n A new online application process facilitated a 60% increase in staff applicants— the highest number of staff applicants in our history while 60% of the staff members were returning employees. n Over 60 day volunteers, 74 medical volunteers, 180 session volunteers— for a total of over 39,984 volunteer hours made dreams come true. 8 2010 Annual Report Summer Campers, by state Summer Diagnoses Served, by percentage Collagen Vascular Disease 3% Sickle Cell Anemia 31% Immune Disorder 26% Mitochondrial Disease New York . . . . . . . . . . . . Providing a free week of summer camp to over 850 children— children who are fighting pain and disability that we can’t imagine— means securing over $3 million each year. However, when we see their smiles, whether on horseback, on the ropes, in the ski area, or on stage, we are rewarded for our commitment. Generous as the Directors are, we can’t do it alone. Even with the help of the Wood Foundation and the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps, we must depend on you, our friends, to supply a majority of the funds required to continue the Double H. To you, our sponsors and contributors, we offer our thanks and gratitude for coming through with the support that makes the Double H “magic” possible. —Walter Robb, Treasurer www.doublehranch.org 17 Our Generous Donors Keeping the Promise Campaign We thank the following donors for their generosity to the Keeping the Promise– the Campaign for the Health and Happiness of Special Children. It is my hope that by doing so, future generations of children will benefit from their magical time spent at the camp.” — Vincent T. Riggi Donor Spotlight Foundation Gift “Our Foundation has been sponsoring Double H campers for eight years. The outcome of the services the Double H Ranch provides their summer campers and winter students is acceptance in who they are and the good they have to offer and confidence in themselves and their abilities that they will take with them into adulthood, long after camp ends. The Cohoes Savings Foundation’s mission to support the development of self-help programs, allowing the recipients to become self-supporting, ties in very nicely with what the Double H provides their children.” —Jacqueline E. She turns 90 in May and I am making this contribution in her honor. Thank you for allowing her to be part of something so special. Her time at the Camp was the highlight of her year.” —Carolyn Reckman, Ruth Reckman’s daughter “I remember Ruth very well; she was an amazing Elderhostel volunteer. Her claim to fame at Camp was making monkey bread for all the kids and staff. She was always smiling and she absolutely loved the kids.” —Max Yurenda, Executive Director Donor Spotlight Service Learning “Both students and staff here feel a certain, special connection to the campers at Double H; it’s children helping children, allowing them experiences of a lifetime that wouldn’t otherwise happen. Knowing that our Annual Crockpot Cook Off we have so much fun planning and hosting is having such an impact on so many children is all worth it. What an inspiring man and a wonderful example of a Fundraising by Friends partner. Jesse works hard planning this event all year long, and all he asks in return is that we meet him at the door to accept the money the following morning. “From the time a camper arrives at Double H Ranch they are welcomed with open arms, kept active, healthy and safe. Their smiles tell it all! They return home at the end of the session with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. I truly believe that Mr. Wood and Mr. Newman had a magical dream for these kids. Today because of staff, management, volunteers and every donation these dreams continue, and I hope they will for many years to come.” — Jesse A. Fish, Camper Parent & Fundraiser Donor Spotlight Gifts-in-Kind “I’ve always believed in the services the Double H Ranch provides children, so when I had the opportunity to help make the dream of an adaptive conveyor for the ski hill come true for the winter volunteer instructors by blasting an island of stone out of the way, I couldn’t resist. By this time next year the beginner skiers and snowboarders will be looking forward to their trip up the mountain on the conveyor as much as their first ski down the hill. Anything we can do to make things a little easier and add to the thrill of the day for these kids is what it’s all about. Both myself and my crew felt much joy in being able to help the Double H Ranch in this endeavor!” — Lori Florian Britton, CEO Alpha Drilling & Blasting, Inc. We strongly believe in their mission of enriching the lives of children and families through memorable and powerful camp experiences. If we were able to expose a new group of people to this worthwhile cause through this event, we consider that a great start. We are dedicated to spreading the word about such a wonderful organization.” — Mr. & Mrs. E. Stewart Jones, Jr. Donor Spotlight Gifts in Kind “The holidays are a time to celebrate with family and friends but most importantly, they are an opportunity to give back to those less fortunate. As much as we appreciated the wine, candles and other hostess gifts that people have brought to our holiday party in the past, they are things that we simply did not need. This year, we asked anyone who was considering bringing a hostess gift to instead, bring a gift card or item off the “wish list” for the children of the Double H Ranch. We understand that providing such simple things can contribute to the life-changing and magical experience they have at camp. Our friends were happy to take part in the drive and the next week, two huge bins of items and gift cards were picked up by the Ranch and eventually used by the Children. This, we feel, is the TRUE spirit of the holiday season.” —Allison and David Meyers, Saratoga Springs, NY Gifts In Kind, Corporations (con’t) LaSerre Lazy River Farms Lifestyles Lily and the Rose Lollipops Children Shop Longfellows Hotel, Restaurant & Conference Center Lowe’s Maestro’s Make it Fit, LLC Manchester Wood, Inc. Our Realtors feel privileged to be able to prepare the Ranch’s facilities for the summer’s onslaught of campers. Knowing that our efforts free up funds for programming and helping ensure that the Ranch will be able to hold a full schedule of summer sessions gives us all a tremendous sense of accomplishment.” — Dave Collins Warren County Association of Realtors Donor Spotlight The Partners group was formed five years ago as an extension of the Double H Ranch and their mission is to raise awareness and increase funding for Ranch programs through memberships and local events in the Saratoga Springs region. This year the Partners hosted a number of children’s events including the Eggstravaganza, a spring holiday event featuring a well-known bunny; Monster Mash a Halloween bash; and a number of events geared toward the older crowd including Boogie Off Broadway, a night of dancing and fine food and a House Crawl, a tour of great homes with an after-party. The Partners group continues to build their membership as well as a following for their events as they build awareness for the mission of the Double H Ranch. Nancy was captured by the magic and has been skiing alongside her sons teaching Double H students ever since. This year Nancy’s third and youngest son, Timothy, convinced Nancy to volunteer for summer camp as well. Nancy notes what an incredibly different experience summer is from winter, “The two seasons provide such a totally different perspective; in the winter you are responsible for the children on the slopes, comfortable in the knowledge that the parents are not far away in Charley’s Chalet. In the summer you are working alongside an amazing staff of young adults who are responsible for the safety and happiness of the kids 24-hours a day. They call me Mama-D, a name I embrace as being a mom is what I love most; I am grateful for the opportunity to extend my love to my Double H family.” Summer Volunteers (con’t) Rajiv Raj Samantha Ramaekers Angela Ranganathan Jennifer Rentas Emily Richart Christina Rua Marcela Rueda Rachel Rusch Tara Saxe Samantha Schwartz Josselyn Sheer Charlie Sinclair Dana Smith Rebecca Soltes Sarah Soltes Daphna Spivak Nancy Stabley Sandra Stewart Matt Stinger Aaron Stoquert Brooke Strauss Laura Sweet Sean Taylor Ross Tierney Yin Tong Frank Tripicchio Jessica Unikowski Elsemiek van Kuijk Amy Vandaveer Lisa Varano Mike Verile Linda Walsh Mary Walsh Rachel Warsco Rose Weiner Karen Wentworth Larissa Wertalik Nuala Wheat Andrews Leah Wilhemsen Erica Wilson Laurie Wilson Julie Witczak Stephanie Zimelak Sarah Zlotnik 36 Alyssa Zupon Fall/Spring Rohan Agrawal Max Campaine Susan Chant Dave Chidyllo Chloe Conlee Deb Creten Christina D’Angelo Matt Davis Lisa Depperman Johnny Doak Lindsey Dodge Tim Driscoll Chuck Drube Lori Drube Zach Earnest Dierdre Fitzgerald Sarah Frese Amanda Fuchs Kati Gilbert Katie Gouinlock Allan Graves Patty Graves Sam Gruber Chris Guidarelli Kelly Halverson Jenica Harmon James Harrison Claudia Jackson Sarah Kersey Steve King Ted Lafforthun Emily Lenney Hank Lenney Regina Lynch Daria Mallin Caitlin Mantica Laura Marrocco Bryan Martinez Dom Martino Pat Martino Matt Marure Casey McKenna Kate McPhillips Cristen Melfi Matt Messinger Liz Morehouse Allie Myers Julie Nehrebecki Linda Newman Nancy Noelting Shannon O’Connell Alex Panza JenniferPearce Emily Pidgeon Kim Poli Patty Rich Scott Royael Erin Scott Peyton Sefick Sandy Sherman Rebecca Soltes Matt Stinger Alexis Umholtz Colleen Umholtz Joe Umholtz Emma Walsh Chelsey Wentworth Rebecca Wilson Steph Ziemlak Becca Zilberstein Winter Larry Abele Max Alley Diane Arzberger Amanda Barone Bill Bateman Bill Bernhard Steve Bomeisl John Bonville Chris Bourgeois Tom Brady Janet Breeze Davin Britton George Brown Randy Brown Ken Brust 2010 Annual Report Lauren Burke Kathy Campion Anita Cartin Chip Cobb Julie Cobello Bonnie Colomb Mahra Colvin Steve Conklin Bob Connelly Nancy Connelly Mark Connor Barb Conway Michaela Conway Caroline Crandall Deb Creten Don Creten David Cummings John Daly Bryan Davidson Ben Dawson Mike Dawson Theo DeHaan Paul Dietershagen Charlotte Distel Nancy Driscoll Tim Driscoll Cathi Duncan Charles Dyer Rosemarie Earl Todd Earl Kimbery Eisen Bob Ellis Ellen Elting Cameron Fisher Kellie Fisher Mike Funk Greg Gallagher Nancy Gatland Mike Gennarelli Phil Gilten Millie Gittinger Shari Godgart David Golibersuch Bill Gormley Susie Grauel www.doublehranch.org Ted Grauel Colleen Halse Alexis Hayes Jim Hayes Talara Hedgpeth Peter Herman Nick Hladik Tom Hodgson David Hoffman Howard Houck Pete Huston Claudia Jackson Rachel Jackson Mark Jensen Robert Karandy Jennifer Kehn Cyn Kendall Bob Kerr David Klingebiel Maria Lane Tom Lane Daniel Lehane Sean Lehane Hank Lenney Herb Levin Bridget Lieberum Kaitlin Limmer Ed Linville Caitlin Lloyd Christopher Lloyd Anne Long Marc Lustick Paul Maguire Janet Malcecki Mark Marshall Suzanne Marshall Bryan Martinez Frank Martinez Renee Martinez Dom Martino Pat Martino Jan McCann Sharon McLelland Matt Messinger Emily Mitchell Mike Moreau Peg Nelson Linda Newman Kate Oppedisano Anthony Parente Pati Peebles Kathy Phelps Ron Phelps Michael Phillips Rich Quinn Patty Rich Bob Roe Amy Rowe Sandra Rubin John Ryan Magin Salls Eileen Scheier Ted Schmitz Elaine Schwartz Nancy Sharples Sandy Sherman Michelle Simone Sue Sliva Mike Smith Vanessa Spickerman David Stalter Jenn Stalter Karen Stalter David Staszak Diane Steiner Brad Strader Ron Strader Tom Strobel Joey Supp Melinda Supp Regina Tator David Theobald Susan Theobald Jack Trainor Lou Vendetti Greg Wait Max Weinstein Eleanor White Robert Whiting Joyce Zucker 37 General Corinne Adams Donna Bamond Kaitlin Chieco Michaela Conway Connie Danko Jessica DeNooyer Joan Dickens Kendra Duncan Kim Eisen Bridget End Kay Farrell Ellen Finlayson Miriam Frank Max Frost Jane Gehring Grace Graham Elaine Hill Mark Jensen Amy Johnson Colby Jordan Kathy Kimball Maria Lane Mackenzie Lewis Denis Livsey Anne Long Marc Lustick Taylor Mantica Ann McCullough Dana Messinger Gina Miller Eileen Minder Bob Mitchell Doreen Mitchell Emily Mitchell Andrew Mott Time at Double H is the kind of time that lives on forever: Each session, staff work to complete the summer’s year-in-review for the History Wall. Wood Foundation supported a number of priority capital projects that involved replacing the windows in the Adirondack Room, upgrading the dry well at the conference center and upgrading kitchen equipment. As well, the Foundation is a loyal sponsor of the Double H Ranch’s annual mini-golf tournament. In its 11th year, the event is organized by Helen Sciancalepore and her loving family, in memory of Helen’s husband, Joseph Sciancalepore, a good friend of Charley Wood and the Double H Ranch. In 2010, the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps presented a number of grant opportunities to the Double H Ranch. As well, the Double H continued to benefit from the support of Phi Kappa Tau and relationships with Hasbro and other national corporations for gifts-in-kind support. Team Hole in the Wall fundraising software, facilitated by the Hole in the Wall Camp, was leveraged for a first annual Camp Challenge bicycle ride; the cyclists raising over $20,000 in this first year.
