COMMENTS:
This says it is the February issue and is being mailed to Elliott in early
June. The May issue will have an article on early Georgia Lindsays. Since
much of the material is already collectedr I hope to get that issue out
quickly and be ready to have the August issue out on time. Starting with
the August 1981 issue, I have edited and published and processed through the
mails the monthly newsletter of the Association of Professional Genealogists.
Putting out this monthly has disrupted my business and my work on our Lindsay
newsletter, but the editorship of the APG Newsletter ends in three more
issues. For those who have sent material on the Lindsays which I had promised
to analyze, please forgive the delays. I have not forgotten you.
In mid-May I attended the National Genealogical Society's national convention
at Indianapolis and was out of Salt Lake over ten days. Someone in Virginia-I think--attempted to reach me regarding Lindsays. When I returned to Salt
Lake, I was told there had been a message posted on the bulletin board but
that it had been taken down and destroyed.

if anyone knows about this, would you help to bring us together?
The article on pages 15 to 20 summarizes a 19-page paper I compiled a few
years ago. The material in the paper is much more extensive than this article
and the documentation is given there, whereas it is not given in the article.
If anyone wishes a copy of the 19-page paper, please send $2 to me and I will
send you a copy.
In a future issue we will be doing something on Silverfist Major John Lindsay
of Revolutionary Georgia. He is said to have come from Pennsylvania just
before the war, but his parents are unknown. Some material on him and his
family was given in the May 1981 issue. Anyone with material on Maj. John
Lindsay of Georgia should contact me or Helen Silvey, 6947 Serenity Drive,

The Newsletter seeks to bring together the serious researchers of the
Southern Lindsays in all spellings of Lindsay to untangle the many
branches into their correct families and thus extend the lines back
to the immigrants and their British ancestors. Although the Newsletter
is concerned with Lindsays born before the Revolution, it publishes
information tracing such persons to their deaths,. even if long after
1775. The South before the Revolution is defined as all the eastern
U.S. south and west of the Delaware River. That includes Pennsylvania.
The editor solicits any relevant material--from short queries, bible
entries, and tombstone inscriptions to lengthy lineages and analytical
articles discussing "stonewall" problems. The editor wants to correspond with everyone doing Southern colonial Lindsay research, so write:

Lindsays to 1820 in the IGI
The IGI--the International Genealogical Index--is the LDS Genealogical
'Department's master index on microfiche to "temple work." The purpose of the
LDS Church's genealogical work is to baptize and marry the dead, and the
record of such temple work is put into computer storage and printed on fiche.
Clearly this collection is a grabbag of births and marriages that happen to
have reached the collection, but the IG1 is now so large that it is worth
reproducing.
The names given here COme from the latest fiche edition, that of September
1981, All Lindsays in all spellings are copied for all entries up to 1820 for
all states south and west of the Delaware River.

a Lindsay variant.) ~esidesbirths
and marriages, there are a few
1850 census entries and a few abstracts from wills. Do not worry about minor
spelling variations. Given names that seem to be the same are listed together
in chronological order, though Jane and Jean are listed separately. Parents in
birth entries are n£! listed separately. Lastly, you will find occasional
double entries for what seem to be the same event but where the date or place
differs. These may come from submissions made by different people or may
reflect boundary changes, such as a marriage that took place in a town that was
once in county X but is now found in county Y.
For each entry on flchethere is a number that refers the reader to the
actual filmed submission form. On that form is a statement of the original
source for the birth, marriage, or other event. Since without access to the
microfilms of the submission forms it is impossible to determine the original
source of an event in the IGI, there was no point in reproducing the identification numbers here. If you find an entry for which you desire the source,
call the local LDS church in your area and ask where the nearest branch genealogical library is. Then call that branch library and ask how you can see the

The Lindsays of Maury County, TennesSee
The need to unravel the Lindsays of early Maury County arose from trying
to identify the father of Isaac Lindsey of Navarro County, Texas. Isaac, who
died in Navarro about 1852, was certainly the same man who married Polly
Taylor in Maury County in 1808.
The proof connecting Isaac of Navarro and Isaac of Maury is straightforward. On 21 June 1852, Nancy Medlinda Hammonds and her husband of Navarro
County sold to her brother Claiborn her rights in the estate of her father·
Isaac Lindsey "late of said Navarro Co. now deceased" {Navarro Co., Tx, deeds
G:292 recorded 14 Jan l853}. In the bible of this couple two of their children
are named Mary Rozetta Tailor Hammonds and Isaac Lindsey Hammonds. Among the
personal papers of Isaac's son-in-law Newel C. Hodges was an original deed
selling his headright in Shelby County, Texas, to which Isaac Lindsey and
Claiborn bore witness. On 26 June 1808, Isaac Lindsey made bond in Maury
County, Tennessee, to marry Polly Taylor (original in Maury County cour~'ouse).
The holograph signatures on the 1808 bond the 1842 deed are the same.
Having thus traced Isaac back to his 1808 marriage'in Maury, it was found
there were two and probably three Isaacs in the county in 1810, the year the
will of John Lindsey of Maury named a son Isaac. Identification was further
complicated because none of the Isaacs nor John Lindsey owned land in the
county. However, extensive researches in the Maury records now suggest
Isaac
Lindsey of Navarro County, Texas, was the son of John Lindsey (d. 181C) of
Maury' County, Tennessee, and that this family originally came from Laurens
County, South Carolina, and before that from the Lower Shenandoah Valley in
Virginia.
That the family did not own land in Maury County--or at least had no
deeds recorded in the county records, which survive--was initially very
surprising. Research eventually supplied the reason why. Maury County lies
south-southwest of Nashville, its north boundary running along Duck River Ridge.
The Cherokee in 1785 and the Chickasaw the next year ceded their claims to
land north of the Duck River Ridge, the lands south of the ridge remaining
Indian hunting grounds, though no tribe actually lived in the area. In 1805
the Chickasaw ceded its claims south of Duck River Ridge, including a wedge of
land around what is now Huntsville, Alabama. This 1805 cession caused a land
rush across Duck River from the Nashville area and from eastern Tennessee down
the Tennessee River. Maury was created in 1807, Madison County, Alabama, in
1808, and adjoining Tennessee counties very soon after. Judging from early
tax lists, the Lindseys were among the early settlers.
But just because the Duck and Elk River (south of Maury County) country
was opened to white settlement by the 1805 did not mean the settlers found
free land. Back in 1783 ~'eNor th Carolina legislature had briefly opened what
is now Tennessee to land purchase despite its being Indian-owned. The 1783
law permitted purchases of land with money or with the script the state paid
for supplies and issued to Revolutionary soldiers in lieu of pay. Tracts were
limited to a maximum of 5000 acres, forcing speculators to enter additional
lands in the names of "dummy" owners, very often their children. As a consequence, much of Maury County was sold in SOOO-acre tracts in 1783, though no
settlers came to the area for over twenty years. Thus, the land rush of 1805

was into an area where much of the best land was already owned by Eastern
speculators.
It was from such speculators
that the Lindseys leased land in
Maury County rather than buying it.
Since leases are rarely mentioned
in
deed books, it was through other records that the early Maury County Lindseys
were finally clarified.
(While on the topic of Indian
cessions
and land
sales,
it might
be
interesting
to mention an important fact of settlement
in the area lying ~
of Maury County.
The 1805 cession line ran roughly just west of the present
western boundary of Maury.
Lands west of this line were Indian-owned
and
white settlements
were prohibited.
But since there were no Indian tribes in
the area, many whites crossed th.e 1805 line and squatted on the Indian lands.
Historians
estimate that perhaps 4000 whites were illegally living on these
lands by 1810.
In the summer of 1809 and for the next two years, U.S. soldiers
tried ekpelling
these squattors, burning their cabiris and crops.
In 1810 Fort
Hampton was built near the mouth of Elk River to enforce the Indian treaty
line.
Only in 1816 were these lands ceded by the Indians, which means that
for a decade many whites who squatted on these Indian lands were living in a
legal terra incognita and might not appear in county records until after the
1816 cession allowed the creation of Lawrence County, Tennessee,
and Lauderdale County, Alabama.
Although not discussed
in this article, it appears that
part of the Lindsey story lies in this area called the Big Bend of the Tennessee.
This fact is mentioned here to remind Lindsay genealogists
that they should
keep alert to this phenomenon
in Tennessee
and other parts of the South.)

entry. Ideally, it would be best to reproduce the nine pages of single-spaced,
typed summary of the references to Lindsays found in these records, but to
save space here, only four entries will be cited.

(According to court minutes 2A:
299, 19 May 1815: the case of Edwd Lindsay vs Joseph Lancaster on
trespass, assault and battery, was dismissed because "said plaintiff hath
departed this life since the last continuance of this cause ••••")
While these are the most important entries found, they are only a very
small part of the Lindsay references in the early Maury records. It was only
by collecting a great many references that the various--apparently unrelated-Lindsay families in Maury could be distinguished and the family of Isaac of
Navarro could be located on Little Bigby Creek.
Four family clusters of Lindsays emerge from the Maury records: John
Lindsay the Justice of the Peace of Fountain Creek; the brothers John and James
who owned land on Cathey's Creek but lived in the Tennessee counties of Sumner
and Wilson; the Sandy Hook Lindseys from North Carolina, and the family west of
Columbia, the county seat, which is the focus of this article and which I shall
call the Little Bigby Lindseys for convenience.
1. John Lindsay the JP lived at a crossroads where his ordinary (inn and
tavern) and plantation seem to have prospered. His grave survives there. He
came from Halifax County! North Carolina, of a prosperous family, had enough
money to ouy his 666-acre plantation in lS07, out first appears in the tax
records the year before with ten slaves. The 1820 census cred~ted him with
54 slaves, while the inventory of his estate reveals such affluence as 29 silver
spoons. His children are easily identified and, anyway, they do not intrude
into the pre-1S2Q Maury records, It is probable that Edward M. Lindsay who

died in late 1834 was his brother, assuming the Maury nuncupative will of
June 1834 and the Halifax County, North Carolina, will probated February 1836
were both his. Neither of· these wills suggests Edward M. had a wife or any
legi timate children.
2. The two Lindsay brothers who owned land on Cathey's Creek likewise left
no children and need not be pursued fur~~er here.
3., The Sandy Hook Lindsays are all strikingly clustered in the 1840s and l850s
in the extreme southwest corner of the county. Some members of this family
were certainly in Maury by 1830: as proven by Caleb marrying then, and probably
Meredith who married in.182l was also of this family, judging by his wife's
proximity in 1840 and 1850 to the other Sandy Hook Lindseys. An 1846 petition
and some cemetery records also show that these North Carolinians settled and
lived. in the Sandy Hook-Mt. Pleasant area. Most of the Lindsey land transactions
in Maury in the 18305 and 1840s were done by this family. The family possibly
came from Orange County, North Carolina.
4. The Little Bigby Lindseys were the most fleeting of the early Maury Lindseys,
living west of Columbia. John Lindsey who died in 1810 is a good starting
place. His will and inventory show he owned a few slaves; likewise, the 1805
and 1807 tax lists (of Williamson County, the parent of Maury) show two and
three adult slaves respectively. He bought no land in Maury but leased a tenth
of the SOaO-acre tract of the heirs of Nicholas Long. His will named sons
Abram, John, Isaac, Josiah, Jacob, and Ezekiel, and it was son Jacob who had
the lease registered in the court records. In the same area of Maury in 1808,
a Jacob and Isaac were directed to work on a road between Little Tom Bigby and
the west fork of Lick Creek, now called Little Bigby and Greenlick Creeks.
Another Little Bigby Lindsey was Ezekiel, who died in 1807. John Lindsey,
Sr., helped make administrative bond for the widow Hannah, and purchasers at
the estate sale included JOhn, Sr., Isaac, and Edward.
Edward Lindsey in 1811 sold something to Jacob; in 1812 he was a juryman,
and by May 1815 he was dead. He has not been conclusively tied to a specific
part of Maury, but the 1815 lawsuit for "trespass, assault and battery" was
against a defendant whose name appeared several times among men known to have
lived west of Columbia, suggesting Edward lived in ~~e same area, since such
trespass cases often concerned land titles. Edward was also named as a partner
of Isaac B. Lindsey, who in 1812 signed certain property to Edward's son Isaac.
Circumstantial evidence suggests it was Edward's wife Catherine who appears in
the 1820 Maury census. Apparently, she later was an early settler in Texas.
Isaac B. Lindsey was ordered in 1820 to work on the road "from the Cagg
Spring branch to Cathey's Mill," which at least locates him sou~~ of Duck River
and west of Columbia. He was over 44 in the 1820 census, listed in manufacturing, and in 1816 he was tried and found innocent of selling liquor without a
license, a court case in which Abraham Lindsey helped provide bail. He was
alive as late as 1824, but his subsequent history is unknown. Like all other
members of the Little Bigby Lindseys, he seems never to have bought or sold
land in Maury County.
Pas tscriJ?ts
A Mr. Alonzo Lindsey (1841-1932) of Tennessee compiled his Lindsey
ancestry but his papers were later destroyed by fire, according to his son

Daniel A. Lindsey (1873-after 1851) of Nashville. Alonzo said a Revolutionary
colonel John Lindsey of North Carolina forces had a son Edward (m?rried
Catherine Higgins) who went to Tennessee in 1814, According to Alonzo, this
couple had the following children, though no evidenceWti$ given for any of this
data. This material is preserved in a letter from Daniel A. Lindsey to Mrs.
John C. Donohoe of Washington, DC, 4 April 1952:

Green: supposed to have lived near Decaturville, Tn
Isaac: [nothing more given]
William E.: died and buried near West Point, Tn1 married Mary Kelly

Keziah: 5.9.1800-4.15.1845, married Wesley Coburn
Edward Newton: 1811-1844, married Solinah Bailey 1820-18861 these
were Alonzo's parents
What dates are given do roughly fit the Edward of the 1800 Laurens County,
South CarOlina, census, and the Edward who died c1815 in Maury. Also, after
Edward died c1815, a Catherine Lindsey is listed in the 1820 r-laurycensus.
Two sons of the above Starling and Mary (Asbel) Lindsey have biographies
in a Dallas County, Missouri, history published in 1889. Both sons were born
in Lawrence County, Tennessee, and the family left there for Dallas County in
t836. Daniel Lindsey appears in the 1850 Lawrence census as age 49, born in
South Carolina. In the historical sketch at the beginning of this article,
it was mentioned that settlers from Maury moved southwestward into the area
now Lawrence County, Tennessee, and Lauderdale County, Alabama.
In the latter
county, the Jacob Lindsey who died in 1823 was very likely the son of John who
died in 1810 in MaurY1 a comparison of slave names in John's will and the 1823
inventory of Jacob's estate makes strong evidence.
From evidence in Laurens County, South Carolina, not presented here, it
seems nearly certain that L~e following chart ties together the Maury County
Lindseys with the Isaac Lindsey discussed in the Lindsay Newsletter of
November 1981:
