in Florence, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, prag and - together
with his Japanese friend Léonard Tsuguharu Fujita - in Paris
and exhibited his works of art internationally (Netherlands
Indies, Japan, Singapore, USA, England, Holland, Sweden,
Norway, France, and Switzerland.
In his works he has always attempted to represent the light,
colour and the simple joy of life that impregnates the native
scenes of the East. As can be seen from the works reproduced,
he has a bold, vigorous style, applying his pigments with quick
strokes of the palette knife. The main subjects of his works
are scenes of Java, Bali, Japan (market sceneries, cockfights,
landscapes and townscapes) and of North Africa.

I know church bells interfere mosque drums
And may distract Moslem’s prayer;
I know to sing out our hymns
While a Moslem brother earnestly
recites holy Koran is appropriate;
I understand that when Moslem’s
call for prayer is heard
A preacher’s sermon is improper
So to commemorate
The birth of Jesus Christ
I took your advice
Find a quiet place
To celebrate the Christmas
Within a Christian circle
Services require church buildings
Offerings require altars
Priests need pulpits
Ritual require heavenly music
And many holy hollered hallelujahs.
I flew to Tapanuli, I bid you goodbye
See you again in the coming New Year …
At noontime and all so unexpectedly,
Awake all night long, the tele-image so violent
Even when Nativity’s light triumphs over darkness
You were lost, nowhere to found
Dear friend, my brother
You walked out on me when
You once ushered me.
Now gone for good. For good
You saw me off to festivity
And took all the suffering.
Lord, for who is thy kingdom on earth and in heaven,
If not for him and me.
Dear friend, do we really part
Separated by religious beliefs?

M. Irfan
Mohammad Irfan, who is often called as M.
Irfan, is a painter who was born in Bukittinggi,
in 19 October 1972. He is regarded as one of
the best-selling Indonesian visual artists in the
contemporary art world. His works are being
pursued by collectors and are often appearing
in auction houses. His paintings are mostly huge
in size. They portray trains, railways, and fumes
which give a sense of darkness.
In his recent series of paintings Irfan try to talk
about dreams, hopes, ideas and also the struggle
of his family. Irfan is an artist that does not like
to involve himself in great or political issues. He
feels that they are simply beyond his capacity
and interests. For him perceiving petty objects
around him is more interesting. The image of
ship on the ocean is perhaps Irfan’s personal
message that contained his dreams, hopes and
ideas.

R.E. Hartanto
Born in Bandung, 1973. R.E. Hartanto is an Indonesian artist, currently living and
working in Bandung, Indonesia. He is known for his provocative portraitures that
narrate stories of contemporary social political issues that are prevalent in our society.
From 1992 – 1998, he studied at Fine Art Departement, Faculty of Fine Art & Design,
Bandung Institute of Technology, majoring painting. He also took his formal education
at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2001-2002).
He participated in many Artist-in-Residence & Workshop programs. His latests solo
exhibitions were “7 Bandung Artists Drawing Exhibition” Common Room, Bandung
(2004) and “Unseen Wounds” Koong Gallery, Jakarta (2000). He also has participated
in several group exhibitions such as in Bandung, Jakarta, Magelang and Singapore.
His works are an experiment which tries to explore area between memory, stimuli,
perception, projection, response and experience that involves them all. His portraits
capture vivid facial expressions of his subjects - some are locked in cryptic suspicion
while others are in a state of shock at unknown sources from beyond the drawing
board. Underlying these unsettled portrayals is the artist’s reflection on disconnection
in contemporary society which triggers and perpetuates these anxieties.

“We rely on the stated law” is an expression of hope about
the fair judgments in law. This is a question about the quality
of justice in our country. But, sometimes people are just

Lee Man Fong
He was born in Canton, China, 1913. He arrived at Singapore at young age
then later moved to Jakarta. He has shown great artistic talent since young.
He participated in the Association’s First Art Exhibition invited by the head
of the Dutch East Indies Associations (1931). Lee Man Fong was a successful
commercial artist before engaged in full time painting in 1941. His successful
exhibitions in Bandung and Jakarta made him a fast growing artist at that time.
He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in
Holland (1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits
as well as acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s
painter and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume
edition of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered
as a western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter.
One exceptional aspect of Lee’s art was his great intense in creating a personal
expression through observation of life and nature surrounds him. He was
refused to be ‘modern’ simply to be ‘fashionable’. His composition in Chinese
painting is dominantly with a balance between substance and void, light and
darkness, bright color and subdued tones. Lee was passionate and energetic
in describing his world – street vendors of Jakarta, Malaysian fishing villages,
Balinese processions, and a wide range of animals he personally observed. This
characteristic perhaps sums up the unique feature of Lee Man Fong’s art.

exciting and very talented artist has participated in a number of group

Yogyakarta. He had lived for 2 years in Switzerland to continue
his study and working. He has participated in several exhibitions
in Indonesia and overseas. He had his solo exhibition in Semarang
Gallery (2002). He received awards as the first winner of PMIAA,
a finalist for Asean Art Award (2000) in Singapore and Indofood
Art Award, Jakarta (2002). Now he lives in Bantul, Yogyakarta.
The exhibition at the furnace gallery (15 – 30 May 2010) was Budi
Haryono aka Ubrux’ first exhibition in Europe, a breakthrough after
his three earlier solos at Semarang Gallery, Bentara Budaya Jakarta,
and iPreciation gallery in Singapore.
Budi Ubrux loves to create contemporary realist artworks by
exploring newspaper as a true-lies media. This phenomenon is put
into canvas in the form of human being with skin from newspaper.
Figures wrapped from top to toe in newspaper appeared suggesting
a futuristic imagination of what could happen in our uncertain future.
Bandaged, swathed and tied, the faceless sculptural figures are able
to lead the imagination in wild proximity. Since then, art observers
and collectors became interested in his works.

Basoeki Abdullah
Basoeki Abdullah is one of the later proponents of the Mooie Indies School
(Beautiful Indies) preferring the depictions of the natural beauty and sensuality
drawn from the Indonesian landscape. He is also noted for his portraits of beautiful
women, as well as paintings of scenes from legends that are also tempered with
the same lyrical and overly sensual treatment. The late artist was well-known for
his realistic paintings. The artist gain the public recognition after winning a painting
competition held in conjunction with the Netherland's Queen Juliana ascension to
throne on 6 September 1948.
Basoeki Abdullah often went to places for field trip, observing object for his painting
and put it into sketch. He is a great naturalist and romantic painter and best known
as a portrait painter as well as landscapes, epic story, and people’s daily lives. He
had produced a great number of portrait paintings of popular figures as well as
relatives and friend. The present lot was one of his great mastery in capturing the
figures of three brothers.

He received scholarship from the Dutch government to study painting in Holland
(1946). In 1952 he returned to Indonesia and gained more credits as well as
acknowledgement. He was officially become a presidential palace’s painter
and chief curators of its collection in 1961 and compiled a 5 volume edition
of President Sukarno’s art collection. He died in 1988 and remembered as a
western vigorous painter and an oriental unique oil painting painter.
Lee’s subject matter included wide range of human figures, landscapes and animals
particularly those commonly found in Chinese brush paintings, such as goldfish,
doves, chickens, rabbits, horses and tigers. He developed his paintings by creating
a personal expression based on observation of live and nature around him. His
paintings often are able to transport us to forgotten places in the wilderness,
where old trees, withered mambo grow out of hardened rocks. The present
lot was one of the many themes about cock and hen. The pair standing on the
hardened rock occupies the foreground, while the background is twisted branches
of withered bamboo. Lee showed how it is possible to marry many of the most
essential elements of both classical painting traditions – light, shadow and realism
on the other hand, and expressionism, experienced calligraphic brushwork, and
the balance between form and emptiness on the other.

S. Sudjojono
Born in Kisaran, Sumatra, 1914. He first studied painting under the artist
Pringadi, and later from Jasaki, a Japanese painter. In 1937 he founded the
Persagi Indonesian Artists Association in Jakarta. In 1970 he was awarded
recognition in art by the Indonesian government. His works have been
exhibited in the Netherlands and in the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan
(1980). Local exhibitions have been held in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and
Bandung. He died in Jakarta (1986).
S. Sudjojono, a self-taught artist who trained briefly at a Taman Siswa school,
is widely regarded as the driving force behind the establishment of modern
art in Indonesia. Through his writing and critics as a member of PERSAGI
– Indonesian Artists Association, Sudjojono articulated a new generation’s
reaction against the idyllic academic and colonial style of Mooi Indie (Beautiful
Indies) school. S. Sudjojono paintings have a typical harsh and wild strokes as if
the paint has been poured directly onto canvas. Sudjojono used a combination
of fantasy and memory to create his surrealistic landscapes. Sometimes, he
incorporated elements derived from places that he had seen in books or
actually visited. His observation of his surroundings seemed spontaneous, as
though they were snapshots of views that appealed to him.

Ugo Untoro
As an individual artist who is looking for meaning through imagery symbolism, Ugo’s
scratchy paint shows his indeterminate sign and poetic upon his self consciousness.
His rough scratches never recognized anything nor reach into form perfections. His
horizontal lines sometimes go beyond his conscious and offer not only form but also
meaningful message.
The horse has its own history in the human history. Ugo explore the image of horse as
the witness of the human bloddy and paintful history. The horse has a mistery towards
the human betrayal of his/her own best friend. Ugo’s horse reflects a mind set that
place the horse as his way to understand reality. Ugo’s horse plays as a personification
and a methapore towards reality.

Rustamadji
Born in Surabaya, East Java, April 16, 1932. In 1946 he started painting under
the painter S. Sudjojono in Sanggar Indonesia Muda (Young Indonesian Artists
Association), Madiun. Rustamadji was a painter in the realistic – naturalistic style
from the 1940’s to the 1960’s, he focused on themes of daily life and experiences
which were familiar to the people. This subject, that reflected feelings of nationalism,
became popular after the more romantic – naturalistic – Mooi Indie style of the
1930’s.
Rustamadji was greatly influenced by the spirit of the time when he began painting.
His works were egalitarian with their messages of social, economic and political
equality for everyone. Rustamadji was deeply inspired by the people’s daily life. His
often used objects of paintings describing the themes of figures, landscapes, and
markets and dancers. He closely observed the realities of life among ordinary people.
He shows his expertise in presenting detailed forms, treatment of light and shadow,
and creating a certain kind of mood.

Chen Wen Hsi
Born in Baigong, Caozhu, 1906. Chen Wen Hsi studied art at the Hsin Hwa Art Academy
in Shanghai. He became a lecturer at the Nangyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore.
His paintings were strongly influenced by Chan (Zen) and the unorthodox Qing School
of Yangzhou. He actively participated in several exhibitions outside Singapore which also
incidentally promote Singapore. He was awarded the Public Service Star from the President
Tun Yusof Bin Ishak and received honorary doctorate from the National University of
Singapore. He became famous since his oil study on formalism, cubism, and expressive
abstraction.
Besides Chinese brush painting, Wen Hsi also produced abstract compositions in oils and
Chinese inks of which his paintings showed a strong influence of analytical Cubism and Fauvism
with non-naturalistic and exuberant colours. This style has heightened the vividly expression
and exoticism of Southeast Asia. Chen painted ceaselessly through his life. Numerous solo
and group exhibitions were held in Singapore and around the world. Wen Hsi’s artistic
excellence was recognized. Among the many awards he had received are the Public Service
Star in 1964, a Gold Medal by the National Museum of History, Taiwan in 1980, the first
recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award for outstanding artists in 1987
and received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore.

Agung Mangu Putra
Mangu Putra’s works arise from intense contact with the world as a conscious
expression of his main creative orientation. Representations of natural
phenomena, along with the inner pulse of life, form the main stream of his
search. The natural world, such as mountains and coasts, are depicted as
identifiable objects. Some of his works with abstract designs imply natural
images, such as the character of water and the texture and colors of earth
or stone. Nevertheless, there is a certain progressive critical vision in Mangu
Putra’s way of viewing and interpreting the world. His works are not mirrors
of direct observations with the naked eye. Natural objects are shown as if
through sophisticated technological imagery, so that they appear artificial,
attractive, provocative, and even fantastic. His artistic world is not a natural
one but instead is ‘polluted’ by civilization.
Mangu’s magnificent landscapes and volcanoes are depicted as majestic,
timeless and all powerful, yet quietly dormant. They are breathtaking, yet
set within an atmosphere of silent intimidating strength. It is this aspect of his
work that sets Mangu apart from his predecessors. It is remarkable how he
adapts from one series of work to another, from painting lifelike textures of
skin to captivating landscapes or sensual nudes. His feel for colors is always
impressive: breathtaking blues for his landscapes, black and whites bonded
with a philosophical theme or just translucent colors that captivate the
viewers’ attention.

M. Irfan
M. Irfan was born in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra 1972. M. Irfan is
included in 51 members of the young artists from West Sumatra
that recently held a group exhibition under the theme of Panorama.
He is widely known as prospective painters in Indonesian art world.
He was one of the member or Jendela Group, a group of painters
from Minang, West Sumatra. Basically Irfan is an artist that does not
like to involve himself in great or political issues. He feels that they
are simply beyond his capacity and interests. For him perceiving
petty objects around him is more interesting. The present lot
perhaps Irfan’s personal observation towards his surroundings.
Irfan’s gratitude towards the natural world offers him an endless
inspiration in his artworks. He was amazed at how nature effortlessly
provides balance, color, design and beauty which he loved to
present as the harmony of his artworks. M. Irfan recently was part
of a group exhibition of Panoramic Views along with other young
artists from West Sumatra.

Lee Man Fong
Lee Man Fong was one of a rare artist who received honor by critics and collectors
across Asia. As an Oriental artist, Lee man Fong has renewed and transformed Western
oil painting by imbuing it with the essence of Chinese ink painting, achieving a mutual
identity between subject and object, at the same time vastly opening the restrictions
on traditional Chinese painting. In short, he created a unique “Man-fong style”.
Lee Man Fong is famous painter who captures gold fishes in magnificent way. Some
gold fishes are swimming freely in the space of an aquarium, still with his essential
element by using the light, reflecting the sun’s radiance, Lee success to bring all the
goldfishes as a depiction of calmness. In Lee Man Fong paintings, light is of prime
importance and the subjects are consistently bathed in a luminous glow as presented
in this lot. The background, unlike the flat, void spaces of Chinese paintings, is likewise
illuminated by an almost mysterious glow of white sunlight. Therefore the subjects,
reflecting the sun’s radiance, seem also to be lit from the back, creating the effect of
“glowing silhouettes”.

Dipo Andy
Dipo works are considered belongs to Andy Warhol’s pop art style that focused
the attention in imaging object. The differences are seen in Dipo’s painting that
uses acrylic on canvas medium, while Warhol uses graphic technique. Dipo seems
always have a strong interest in popular images. He often uses popular figures such
as soccer star David Beckham, the singer Madonna and others as the subjects.
His images are shape by thin lines of nuanced colors to produce portraits out of
emphatic lines of different colors. This gives us the impression that Dipo has interest
in the issues of industry, technology and the cultural values involved.

Arie Smit
Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, 1916. He was a student of the Academy of Arts in
Rotterdam before working as lithographer for the Dutch Colonial Army in the Dutch Indies
prior to the Second World War. He moved to Bali in 1956 to engage in full time painting
and became an Indonesian Citizen, produced as well as taught painting at the Bandung
Institute of Technology (ITB). Many of his paintings depict the nature of his surrounding
environment. He had several solo exhibitions in Bandung Institute of Technology, The
Honolulu East West Center, and the Center of Strategic and International Studies in
Jakarta. He received the “Dharma Kusuma” art awards from the local government of Bali.
Arie Smit is best known for his paintings of fertile rice fields, vast valley and mountain
ranges, temple courtyards and monumental gateways, and festive temple processions of
Bali. Arie’s landscapes often go beyond the scenes of nature. Landscape, Hills and Trees is
not a mere rendition of the rolling green terrain of the valley. Facades of temple are often
shown with human figures in front of them. Arie Smit uses a simple single vanishing point
perspective to depict the temple surrounding. His special characteristics were seen by the
use of his tropical rich colour on the object.

Trubus Sudarsono
Born in 23 April 1926 in Wates, Yogyakarta. He only had a short formal education until
elementary school. His amazing talent and skill was sharpened through learning time with
Affandi and Sudjojono. During revolutionary time in Yogya, he joined Seniman Indonesia
Muda and then Pelukis Rakyat lead by Hendra Gunawan. In 1948, he was arrested and jailed
in Netherlands colonial government because he was considered involving with guerrilla
activity. After released from prisoner, he taught at Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia, Yogyakarta
during 1950-1960. He was known as one of the strongest realism painter in Indonesia. He
indeed closed with opposition and had been selected as Indonesia delegate in a goodwill
journey to Chekoslovakia in 1954. Trubus was also a victim of opposition elimination in
1966. Trubus had mastery in capturing the dancing figure through expressive brush stroke
that become his distinctive characteristic in painting. He tended to use secondary and
tertiary colours that reflected his restless spirit.
