To provide effective advice money advisers need knowledge on a wide range of options and information as well as channels for help and further support. There are so many different types of support on offer and we recognise how important it is to find the right networks, training and support for you. The Money Advice Trust (MAT) is a charity formed in 1991 to increase the quality and availability of free, independent money advice in the UK. The Trust works in partnership to design and deliver these adviser support services. We decided to produce this directory to help money advisers browse, locate and access the right support. 30 Our wiseradviser training, forums and online resources are one way for advisers to gain the knowledge and support they need. Our partner organisations also offer support for advisers through publications, conferences, training, websites and much more. 34 These services complement the support and updates available within advisers’ own organisations via experienced colleagues, in-house training and information systems. Money advice is constantly developing and changing and our sector really thrives on the sharing of knowledge and experience. 2 Adviser Support Directory We have brought together information from across the free-to-client money advice sector to provide you with a comprehensive guide to adviser support. We hope you find it useful and informative. This directory covers support for money advisers in England and Wales. MAT also works with partners in Scotland and Northern Ireland to provide support for money advisers in these regions. For further information visit www.wiseradviser.org and www.moneyadvicetrust.org Adviser Support Directory 3 Partnership working How and why do we work in partnership? MAT works with its partners by agreeing strategy and by sharing resources and ideas to achieve a common goal. The aim of the partnership is to support advisers in providing high quality money advice. Working together helps us to ensure the work of each organisation does not overlap but is complementary and makes best use of often limited resources. Wiseradviser was established to build and maintain strong lines of communication between all partner organisations to promote consistency and high quality in money advice training. The Adviser Support Steering Group (ASSG), previously known as the Training Steering Group, is key to agreeing a joined up strategy across the UK. The group was renamed in early 2010, to better reflect the group’s purpose and aims. Wiseradviser training, accessed through the wiseradviser website, is free for volunteers, employees and members of our partner organisations. Course materials are updated bi-annually to reflect changes in legislation and bring you relevant training of an excellent standard. Generalist level training is designed to give new advisers an understanding of the basic principles of money advice. Caseworker level training is aimed at developing the skills and knowledge of ‘generalist’ money advisers. Some courses also ask that advisers have completed Generalist level training and have had the opportunity to put the training into practice and the new learning into context. This service is available by telephone and email. The CFS is a budgeting tool that can be used by advice agencies and other third party organisations to make debt repayment offers to creditors on behalf of clients. It provides a detailed budgeting format enabling an accurate overview of a client’s income, expenditure, assets and liabilities to be produced. In contrast to other forms of debt relief, DROs are delivered in partnership with debt advisers or ‘Approved Intermediaries’.
