In filming this semi-autobiographical account of life in Italy during
the dawn of World War II, director Franco Zeffirelli imbues Tea with
Mussolini with the mixed blessings of fond reminiscence. It's a warmly
inviting film, as impeccable as any Merchant-Ivory production, but like a
hazy memory it's uncertain in its narrative intentions. And yet with an
exceptional cast to compensate, the film's as engaging as it is
inconsequential.
Zeffirelli's alter ego is Luca (Charlie Lucas in youth; Baird Wallace
as a teenager), who is raised in Florence by Mary (Joan Plowright), the
middle-aged secretary of his absentee father. Luca lives among a loose
band of British and American women, nicknamed "Il Scorpioni" for their
stinging wit in the shadows of Mussolini's thuggish dictatorship. Along with
Mary there's Hester (Maggie Smith), a crusty ambassador's widow; Arabella
(Judi Dench), a lively bohemian; lesbian archaeologist Georgie (Lily Tomlin); and Elsa (Cher), a flamboyant American
who quietly finances Luca's education.
Il Scorpioni witness the rise of fascism and the dangers of resistance,
weathering dictatorial custody and (in Elsa's case) falling prey to heartbreaking betrayal.
But Tea with Mussolini carries little dramatic weight; you have to forgive its unfocused
structure to appreciate its merits. Zeffirelli gently conveys the passage from pleasantry
to wartime, and he's drawn uniformly fine performances from this seasoned cast.

Beginners Class with Helaine Neiman
“This is not your grandmother’s canasta”
Canasta is making a HUGE comeback! It’s smart and super fun!
Hear what others have said after taking lessons with Helaine.
“ I was lucky enough to be one of Helaine’s canasta students and I can
honestly say that I am hooked! She is an excellent instructor, very patient and
thorough as she walked me through everything from the basics to strategy,
time and time again. I look so forward to my weekly game with my friends, and
as a recent empty nester, this has been especially important to me. It keeps
my mind sharp and my friendships going!”
- Alison
Helaine is certified by the Canasta League of
America™, the foremost leader in modern Canasta
instruction in the United States. This training ensures
that students learn the game properly, right from the
start, including both the rules and strategy. She has
taught Modern Canasta to small groups across
Northern Jersey.
“Helaine is a fabulous teacher of Canasta. She
takes what can seem like a complicated game with
tons of rules and breaks it down into easy to
understand steps...She is patient and encouraging
and always on call to answer a question, even
when lessons are over.”

Truly Freilach Performance by
THE JEWBADORS
The Jewbadors are in their fifth year of bringing poignant and entertaining shows to
audiences in Middlesex and several other counties in the surrounding area. The
Monroe township based group consists of nine musicians and singers who have
performed in other shows, choral groups and as soloists. Their current production,
which is in Yiddish, Hebrew and English, has received rave reviews, as it covers The
Jewish Journey From There to Here--the story of the emigration from Europe to the
United States and Israel.

September 7, 2016: Labor Day
First, we will catch up with each other after our summer hiatus and welcome any new members who
will be joining the Men’s Group. Then we will discuss the real significance of Labor Day. Now often
seen as the unofficial end to the summer vacation season, Labor Day was originally a celebration of
America’s labor movement. During the 1950s approximately 33% of American workers belonged to
a labor union. Today that number is approximately 7%. Did you ever belong to a union? Did it
benefit your life and career or hinder it? Has the decline in union membership been good for
America, or bad?
September 14, 2016: Our Best Teachers / The People We’ve Met Along the Way
We all have had many teachers in our lives, but if we were lucky there were one or two teachers
who helped change the direction of our lives. Perhaps they saw a special talent in us, or inspired us
in some other way. Today, we will tell the stories of our favorite teachers and/or mentors – and
other people we have met along the way who set us on a new life path.
September 21, 2016: Entitlements
The Bernie Sanders presidential campaign earlier this year brought socialism back into the national
discussion. Sanders’ campaign is over, but he has opened a dialogue about what should be
America’s social policies regarding higher education and healthcare. Should a college education be
an entitlement? Should healthcare be universal and entirely taxpayer supported? Should all
workers have pensions? Should child care be free? We will discuss these questions.
September 28, 2016: Bar Mitzvah / Confirmation Memories
Did you have a Bar Mitzvah and/or Confirmation? Do you have any
special memories of this time? How did you prepare for those events?
Did your family have a celebration? Who attended? Where was it?
Today, we will look back at our coming of age events.

October 5, 2016: Columbus Day
In school, we were taught that Christopher Columbus was a daring explorer who discovered
America. In recent years, however, revisionist historians have painted Columbus as a genocidal
maniac who murdered indigenous peoples all through the New World. What do we think of
revisionist history? Is it better for America’s school children to hear the sanitized stories we
learned as children, or should students today learn the revisionist version of Columbus’s story?
October 12, 2016: NO MEN’S CLUB. JCC CLOSED FOR YOM KIPPUR
October 19, 2016: Taxes
As the old saying goes, there are only two things on which you count in life: death and taxes.
Today we will talk about taxes. If you could change America’s tax policies, what would that look
like?
October 26, 2016: Prostitution
Known as the oldest profession, prostitution has existed since the dawn of humankind. Illegal in
most places, prostitution is now being re-examined by public policy experts. Amnesty
International, the human rights organization, has recently called for the decriminalization of sex
work globally. What are your thoughts? Should prostitution be legal? If so, what should be the
parameters?

INSTRUCTOR: Barry Galitzer
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that is practiced today as a
graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a
slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing.
Barry Galitzer has been active in martial arts for the past 40 years. He has a black
belt in Isshin Shorin-Ryu karate. His Tai Chi studies started in 1992. He suffered a back
injury which herniated his two lower lumbar discs causing a lot of pain. Soon after he
started studying Tai Chi with Master Shu Chao Hua of
Fanwood. He learned 24, 37, and 48 forms as well as
chikung exercises. Through her teaching he healed his
back and became her assistant teacher.
Barry started teaching Tai Chi part time in Westfield

The Election
Presenter: Dr. Anthony Troncone
As one of the more interesting and in
some ways entertaining elections in recent
times, the 2016 presidential election reflects an
ongoing ideological divide in America and the
weaknesses of the two party system to field
candidates acceptable to large numbers of
voters. In exploring this, the discussion will
focus on the disparate roles that ethnicity,
gender, and ideology have played in shaping
the views articulated by the candidates.

and the National Museum of
Women in the Arts
A 2-Part Presentation
Presenter: Dr. Barbara Tomlinson
Part 1
Sofonisba Anguissola was probably the most
interesting Renaissance painter you've never heard
of. Her life story is more exciting and complex than a
novel, and her art was appreciated by the likes of
Michelangelo and Rubens. Come experience her work.
Part 2
Learn about the Museum that rescued Sofonisba
Anguissola from oblivion and put her back in the
history books, the National Museum of Women in
the Arts. This museum in Washington is the only
one of its kind in the world and the story of its
origins and growth is almost as inspirational as
that of Sofonisba herself.

Come and enjoy the beautiful sounds of the harp!
This program by internationally known harpist Karen Stern
will include music in a variety of styles, ranging from the Baroque
(Handel) to the Romantic (Debussy) to the contemporary
(Gershwin), something for everyone.
Karen Stern is a busy harpist in the New York area. She
enjoys performing in concerts like this; sharing music in an
atmosphere that is intimate and with easy access to all.
Karen performed regularly with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra for
many years. She participated in the orchestra's two trips to Ireland, can be
heard on several of their CDs, and was soloist with them in Mozart’s Concerto
for Flute and Harp during their 1997 Mozart Festival. Other orchestral
experience includes performances with American Symphony Orchestra, NYC
Ballet, American Ballet Theater, NYC Opera and Broadway shows.
Her career has been varied, from providing music for high tea at the
Waldorf and aboard cruise ships, to traveling to Budapest with the New York
Harp Ensemble to record an album with Hungarian opera star Eva Marton. The
Levin/Stern Flute and Harp Duo, with flutist Sharon Levin, was presented in their
NY debut recital at Weill Recital Hall, as winners of the Young Artists Chamber
Music Award, and have concertized in the US, Europe, South and Central
America.

BETTER TOGETHER
In It’s Second Year….
Looking for 11 seniors to share
“their life stories”
Rave reviews from this
year’s participants—
students and seniors
alike!!!
Join together at the JCC and
share an hour with eighth grade
girls from a local day school
approximately one Thursday a
month for 8 months.
Tentatively beginning in October
This program will afford the students an invaluable experience of learning from an
older generation: their experiences, life lessons, and courage. The seniors will in turn
engage with a younger generation interested in hearing their stories and eager to
record a life story. BETTER TOGETHER embodies core Jewish Values of
generational continuity, reverence of older people, and the obligation to learn from
history.
The BETTER TOGETHER program is funded by the Heritage Legacy Foundation
aimed at forming inter-generational connections. It will empower eighth graders of Yeshiva
Shaarei Tzion to connect with an older generation in Middlesex County and learn valuable
lessons and narratives from them through a series of monthly visits. Students will be well
prepared for their visits with tailored curricula of history, memoir writing and they will be
given the opportunity to reflect and record what they have learned. At the end of the year
they will compile their writings and present a video at a year-end banquet.

Can’t get tickets to the play? Lucky enough to have seen the play and were inspired to
learn more? Then you’ll want to join us for this fascinating trip walking in Alexander Hamilton’s foot
steps.
Not even Pennsylvania Avenue invokes a greater image of power in the imagination than
the concrete canyons of Wall Street. The financial epicenter of American commerce and business,
its very name seems too large to be contained on the short narrow street itself and instead has
become a symbol of global finance.
Alexander Hamilton envisioned modern America and the seat of the nation's financial
power more accurately than any other Founding Father. Creating the Bank of New York in 1784 and
the First National Bank in 1790, he eventually restored national credit to a bankrupt country, and by
doing so birthed America’s most critical financial systems. Hamilton's vision has defined Wall Street
more than any other person in history to date.
This tour explores the city of New York in Hamilton's life, and the deep impression he left
behind. As we uncover the secrets behind his inexhaustible drive and his unimaginable
achievements, it explains his relentless effort to leave his bold impression on his adopted nation.
This tour will start at the Battery to recall the battles of the American Revolution and the toll New York paid for Independence
during the war, and will describe how Hamilton rose from Captain of an artillery company to the right hand of Washington himself.. We
will discuss the creation of the Federal Government of the United States as well as the 1st and 2nd Sessions of Congress and
numerous other events that took place at Federal Hall. We will also visit Trinity Church to pay tribute and respect to the Hamilton's at
their final resting place.
Jimmy Napoli has been a licensed N.Y.C. tour guide since 1996, specializing in the American Revolution, the creation of the
Federal Government of the United States of America, the abolition movement and women's suffrage. His main area of
interest and expertise is Alexander Hamilton. In 2007, Jimmy appeared in the PBS documentary "The American Experience:
Alexander Hamilton," written and directed by Middlemarch Films. Jimmy was published in 2012 in a re-edition of the classic
biography "George Washington: the Indispensable Man" by James Thomas Flexner, writing the additional essays and
providing historical consultation on this Sterling Publishing signature edition. He is also a frequent lecturer at Morris-Jumel
Mansion, George Washington's 1776 headquarters in Harlem, where he speaks about the lives and legacies of America's
Founding Father's. "I love sharing my passion for the history of New York and the ideals of our founding fathers with
visitors and locals alike," says Jimmy. "Those ideals are still very much alive today, and will forever be engraved on our city
streets."

Pickleball
Want to get in on the latest activity in
adult communities throughout the
United States?
Pickleball was created with one thing in mind: fun.
It was designed to be easy to learn and play whether you’re five,
eighty-five or somewhere in between.
Pickleball is traditionally played on a badminton-sized court with special Pickleball
paddles, made of wood or high-tech aerospace materials. The ball used is similar to a
wiffle ball, but slightly smaller. The lower net and wiffle ball allow the game to be
accessible to people of all ages and abilities, while still allowing more competitive
players to test their mettle.
Learn the game Thursdays from 12:30-1:30 PM
in Gym A
Eight week session begins September 12, 2016
