Ladino Folk Music & Song
with The Elias Ladino Ensemble
Sunday, April 19, 2015
2:00 pm
Jewish Community Center of Middlesex County
1775 Oak Tree Road
Edison, NJ 08820
The ensemble will present sung narratives filled with
memories and recollections steeped in age-old Judeo-Spanish
cultural and oral traditions which are sung not only for celebratory or ceremonial
purposes, but, are often sung to commemorate everyday life events.
Ensemble founding member, Daniel Elias, grew up in one such household
where his father, Joe, sung many of the songs sung to him as a child, by his mother.
The elder Mr. Elias, the original founder of the ensemble, had strong ties to his
Sephardic roots passing on these treasured songs to his son who has been
performing in public since the age of 15.
Mr. Elias will be accompanied by master musician, Maurice Sedacca. Mr.
Sedacca, is also a founding member of the ensemble. He was taught the songs of
this distinctive culture by his mother, Esther Sedacca.
This folklife program is offered free of charge, however, registration is
required. To register and request directions for this program, please call the
Commission at 732. 745. 4489. Persons with hearing disabilities may call

TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2015 at 10:00 AM— Suddenly Love by Aharon Appelfeld
A poignant, heartbreaking new work by “one of the best novelists
alive” (Irving Howe)—the story of a lonely older man and his devoted young
caretaker who transform each other’s lives in ways they could never have
imagined.
Ernst is a gruff seventy-year-old Red Army veteran from Ukraine who
landed, almost by accident, in Israel after World War II. A retired investment
adviser, he lives alone (his first wife and baby daughter were killed by the Nazis;
he divorced his shrewish second wife) and spends his time laboring over his
unpublished novels. Irena, in her mid-thirties, is the unmarried daughter of
Holocaust survivors who has been taking care of Ernst since his surgery two
years earlier; she arrives every morning promptly at eight and usually leaves
every afternoon at three. Quiet and shy, Irena is in awe of Ernst’s intellect. And
as the months pass, Ernst comes to depend on the gentle young woman who runs his house, listens to
him read from his work, and occasionally offers a spirited commentary on it.
TUESDAY, JUNE 2, 2015 at 10:00 AM— The Betrayers by David Bezmozgis
These incandescent pages give us one fraught, momentous day in the life of
Baruch Kotler, a Soviet Jewish dissident who now finds himself a disgraced Israeli
politician. When he refuses to back down from a contrary but principled stand
regarding the settlements in the West Bank, his political opponents expose his affair
with a mistress decades his junior, and the besieged couple escapes to Yalta, the
faded Crimean resort of Kotler's youth. There, shockingly, Kotler encounters the
former friend whose denunciation sent him to the Gulag almost forty years earlier.
In a whirling twenty-four hours, Kotler must face the ultimate reckoning, both
with those who have betrayed him and with those whom he has betrayed, including
a teenage daughter, a son facing his own moral dilemma in the Israeli army, and the
wife who once campaigned to secure his freedom and stood by him through so much. Stubborn, wry,
and self-knowing, Baruch Kotler is one of the great creations of contemporary fiction. An aging man
grasping at a final passion, he is drawn inexorably into a crucible that is both personal and biblical in
scope. In prose that is elegant, sly, precise, and devastating in its awareness of the human heart,
David Bezmozgis has rendered a story for the ages, an inquest into the nature of fate and
consequence, love and forgiveness. The Betrayers is a high-wire act, a powerful tale of morality and
sacrifice that will haunt readers long after they turn the final page.

INVENTING OUR LIFE –
THE KIBBUTZ EXPERIMENT
Set against the backdrop of the kibbutz
movement’s glorious 100 year history,
Inventing Our Life reveals the heartbreak and
hope of Israel’s communal living experiment
as a new generation of women and men
confront a critical question: can a radically
socialist institution survive a new capitalist
reality?
Running Time: 80 minutes
Inventing Our Life explores the modern
history of Israel, from its revolutionary settlers
to the political upheaval that shook the
socialist foundations of the state. With their
desire to create a Jewish homeland and build
a more just society, the first settlers helped
place kibbutzim in the vanguard of Israeli
history. In doing so, they became a magnet
for all those who shared one thing in
common—a powerful urge to invent their own
life.

Jews and Israel from the pre-State period on.
The subject will address the nature and changes
within the American Jewish community over the
past 65 years as well as those in Israel.

Julia Child was an American cook,
author and television personality who
introduced French cuisine and cooking
techniques to America. She was in the
vanguard of "foodies," who by changing
America's taste, helped create modern
American culture. While her public face and
voice became familiar to all of us, this
presentation focuses on her private side especially the relationship with her husband,
Paul Child. This is a love story!

PRESENTER: MICHAEL BASILE Ph.D.
The conflict between
fathers and daughters occupies
center stage in many of
Shakespeare’s plays, comedies,
tragedies, and romances alike.
Astonishingly, Shakespeare
consistently favors his young
women—Juliet, Hermia,
Desdemona, Cordelia, and
Perdita—despite the prevailing
patriarchy of his society. This
presentation examines the
biographical, cultural, and theatrical reasons behind this predilection.
Dr. Michael Basile is a Professor of English at New Jersey City University
as well as a widely published author, lecturer and Shakespearean actor.
This program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey
Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for
the Humanities.

Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity
Just when you think
you’ve considered the work
of the Impressionists from
every possible perspective,
here’s a new one.
Consider the clothing.
These artists were
determined to paint modern
life! And just as the city of
Paris was changing
architecturally, so too was
the way people dressed. Come learn how all
these changes are reflected in the paintings we
all thought we knew so well.

TOUR
GUIDE
MARTY
SCHNEIT as
we explore the
many facets of New York’s Williamsburg
neighborhood by bus and foot. Williamsburg, one of Brooklyn's most popular and
exciting neighborhoods, straddles old and new. It is a mish-mash of cultures and
vistas.
Interestingly, the hip Williamsburg scene plays out against a backdrop of old
industrial buildings, modest attached homes (though punctuated by increasing
numbers of expensive waterfront high rises), and a long-standing residential
community of Hasidim.
If there's one neighborhood that's indicative of the "new Brooklyn," it's
Williamsburg. Marty will take us to Lee and Bedford Avenues. We’ll see the new
“yuppie” section, We’ll visit the old Domino Sugar Plant and sooo much more. You’ll
be fascinated by Marty’s descriptions, stories and the history of Jews in Williamsburg.
There will also be time on your own for lunch AND MORE.

Discovering the Impressionists:
Paul Durand-Ruel
and the New Painting
ONLY NORTH AMERICAN SHOWING!
Despite the popularity of
Impressionism today, the
groundbreaking shifts that
occurred in French painting at
the end of the nineteenth
century were not immediately
embraced by collectors, dealers,
or the public. A vital figure in the
rise of Impressionism is Paul
Durand-Ruel (1831–1922), a
practical, ambitious, and visionary Parisian art dealer who enthusiastically
championed the new style of painting. Discovering the Impressionists
examines the critical years from 1865 to 1905 when Durand-Ruel both inspired
and sustained artists like Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Édouard
Manet, Camille Pissarro, and Edgar Degas. Important works by these artists
and others will be shown with historical photographs and documents to explore this period.
This
exhibition, organized into a series of episodes or case studies that explore key moments in the history of the
Durand-Ruel gallery, traces the development of Impressionism—its struggles, successes, and eventual
recognition—and reveals Durand-Ruel’s role in the movement.
JOIN US for this wonderful trip opportunity and the audio tour of the Discovering the Impressionists
exhibit and a tour at the Rodin Exhibit as well as time on your own in this beautiful museum.
