Mainstage
T
he 2011-2012 Mainstage Season marked the highest number of Season Ticket holders
in Village Theatre history, ending the season with 18,213 Subscribers. Opening the
season was Take Me America, directed by Jerry Dixon. This new musical drama
explored a day in the life of an agent for the Department of Homeland Security. Coming
to the stage for the holiday season was the classic Irving Berlin musical Annie Get Your
Gun, with the stunning Vicki Noon continuously bringing audiences to their feet with her
performance as Annie Oakley. Directed by Steve Tomkins, this musical featured exquisite
costumes, sets, and performances brought by local talent. The season continued with Neil
Simon’s The Odd Couple, directed by Seattleite Jeff Steitzer. With a cast of local favorites like
Charles Leggett, Chris Ensweiler, Eric Polani Jensen, and Matt Wolfe, this comedy was a
tremendous success, earning a spot as one of Village Theatre’s most successful non-musical
plays. The second new musical of our Mainstage season, It Shoulda Been You, was a hilarious
musical comedy that took you behind-the-scenes at a wedding where nothing was quite as
it seemed. The season closed with a side-splitting production of Mel Brooks’ The Producers,
directed by Steve Tomkins. With a cast, crew, and orchestra totalling over 50 people both on
and off the stage, sets taking you from a rooftop with singing pigeons to a stylish New York
flat to a sparkling Broadway stage, and dazzling costumes, this production filled audiences
with awe as well as laughter.

a developmental production of Lizzie
Borden, as a part of the 12th Annual
Festival of New Musicals. The Festival is held each summer in August, drawing performers, directors, writers, composers, and producers from all over
the country, even internationally. For the second year running, we were able to uitilize both First Stage and the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre in order to
have five of the readings of new musicals along with a more elaborate developmental production of Lizzie Borden, a past festival favorite. The Festival of
New Musicals continued its ongoing trend of 14% increased attendance.
The five readings in the 12th Annual Festival of New Musicals included Hello Out There, Oneida, Great Wall, The ToyMaker, and Johnny Baseball. Each of
these readings resulted in valuable feedback to the authors provided by the audience both in a talk-back following the show as well as surveys submitted
after the show. This feedback continues to illustrate the smart and savvy qualitites of the Village Originals audience, a great contributor to the reputation
of Village Theatre on a national level.

illage Theatre’s Youth Education and Community Outreach programs served over 63,000 young
people, families and educators throughout the Puget Sound. Available to all regardless of the
ability to pay, the programs provide healthy out-of-school-time activities, stimulate learning
through the arts in schools, provide access to the arts for underserved populations, develop young artists,
and promote skills for enriched and successful lives.
Year-Round, Out-of-School-Time Theatre Education Program: KIDSTAGE
KIDSTAGE develops “Skills for Theatre….Skills for Life” through classes, camps, productions and
apprenticeships. Nearly 2,400 students worked with professional artists, designers, and arts educators to
build skills and explore all facets of theatre and musical theatre.
Village Theatre Institute: The Institute had its inaugural year in Issaquah and is now the program of choice
for 75 serious students ready to study, train, and perform at an advanced level throughout the school year.

Community Outreach
Echo Glen Program: Village Theatre began a new program for incarcerated female teens at Echo Glen
in Issaquah. The program, which is directed by the Institute Manager and skilled teaching artist, works
directly with young women ages 15-18 in the high-security program to express themselves and build selfesteem and trust through writing, composing, and performing.
Pied Piper - Theatre for Young Audiences Series and Arts in Education Program
21,500 students throughout East King, Snohomish, and Island Counties joined their class or family to
attend a Pied Piper presentation in a theatre in Bellevue, Everett, or Mount Vernon. Pied Piper brings
literature to life on stage for schools and the public at very affordable prices.
Pied Piper Outreach Workshops and Scholarship Program provided 7,161 students exposure to the arts
free of charge.

Capital Campaign
I
n 2005 Village Theatre developed a $13.8 million comprehensive capital campaign. To date, we have raised over $8.9 million. Currently, we are
focusing on Phases II and III of our campaign for the $3 million reconstruction of First Stage in Issaquah and the $3 million renovation of a former
bank building into the Second Stage and Youth Education Center in Everett. Even though the campaign is still in the “quiet phase,” over $114,000 was
raised in 2011-2012 for the Second Stage building, bringing the total raised to $1,929,385.
First Stage
Second Stage and Youth Education Center
Beginning June 2010, Village Theatre rebuilt First Stage Theatre,
originally constructed in 1913. The work has maintained the historical
feel and façade, while incorporating state-of-the-art production
equipment and modern patron amenities.
In partnership with the City of Everett, Village Theatre renovated and
recently opened Second Stage and Youth Education Center, a former
bank building next to the Everett Performing Arts Center. The building
is the new home to our Youth Education program and hundreds of
KIDSTAGE students, classes, rehearsals, workshops, and productions.
First Stage is home to our KIDSTAGE and Village Originals programs.
The new theatre has doubled the classroom space, incorporated a larger
lobby, expanded restrooms, and added dressing rooms. The stage was
expanded to incorporate wings for equipment, crew, and storage. A
new telescoping 193-seat system was installed to provide for maximum
flexibility, including cabaret productions, reception space, and special
event occasions, as well as a traditional theatre environment.

The facility has been designed to provide for unique and lively
entertainment possibilities. The intimate, flexible seating and
performance space will provide options for up to 170 theatre seats or
banquet style cabaret seating, offering a multiplicity of programming
and entertainment opportunities to visitors and the residents of this
community not possible in larger venues.

D
uring the 2011-2012 Season, Village Theatre produced five shows in its
Mainstage season with a total 360 performances. The Mainstage season saw
attendance of 82,249 patrons in Issaquah and 47,083 in Everett. This was down
slightly from prior years. Total number of subscribers decreased slightly in Issaquah,
and increased 2.8% in Everett, bringing the cumulative total number of subscribers to
18,213. With over 2,100 enrollments in KIDSTAGE classes and summer camps during
the year, KIDSTAGE continued to flourish and saw a 25% increase in revenue. The new
KIDSTAGE Institute saw continued growth in both programming and enrollment.
Attendance at the eight KIDSTAGE productions throughout the year was nearly 11,000.
The Pied Piper program presented five shows to schools groups and families and saw
overall attendance of nearly 20,000. The Village Originals program, which continues to
attract local, as well as national, attention from writers and directors across the country,
produced another successful Festival of New Musical in the summer and also produced a
developmental production of a new musical at the newly renovated First Stage.
Total earned revenue from operations decreased 2.2% mainly due to lower single ticket
sales. Contributed support increased 6.5% from the prior year. Operating expenses
increased 3% mainly due to increased labor costs and cost of living adjustments.
Despite the combined efforts of a supportive community and a creative and dedicated
Village Theatre team, the organization ended the year with an operating deficit before
depreciation (a non-cash expenditure) of $247,306. When combining operations and
capital campaign activity, the overall change in net assets was a decrease of $668,758
Beginning in 2005, Village Theatre launched a capital and endowment fund campaign.
The campaign proceeds are being used to purchase land and build the new Technical
Studios, which house the scene, prop, and paint shops, reconstruct First Stage, renovate
an Everett City building into a theatre and education facility, provide financial stability
by establishing an endowment, retire the current mortgage and cover the cost of the
campaign. The campaign goal as of August 31, 2012 is $13.8 million. As of August 31, 2012
and 2011, $8,850,575 and $6,858,338 respectively, had been pledged or given towards
that goal. The Craig and Joan Watjen Technical Studios were completed in 2007 and
reconstruction of First Stage was completed in March 2011. The Everett Youth Education
Center (now called Second Stage) was completed in September 2011.
