Leveraging its rich heritage, Pathé owns the rights to an extensive film library, which is constantly expanding thanks to the new films produced or acquired by the company. The Great Beauty, by Paolo Sorrentino PATHE 2013 FILMS 9 In France, Pathé released 24 films in theaters, and 9 films with which Pathé is associated went into production in 2013. Philippe Le Guay draws us into a delectable comedy, in which two different acting methods go head to head, and great works of literature, friendships and bruised egos enter the fray. It’s funny, intelligent and profound yet at the same time lighthearted. Danielle Attali, Le Journal du dimanche In the UK, 5 films were released in theaters, including Philomena, by Stephen Frears, which was the top independent British film at the English box office in 2013. In Switzerland, Pathé distributed 42 films in theaters. The German film Fack ju Göhte (F*ck you, Goethe), by Bora Dagtekin, attracted 185,000 moviegoers and was a great success in German-speaking Switzerland. by Philippe Le Guay by Danny Boyle (Cycling with Molière) Starring Fabrice Luchini, Lambert Wilson, Maya Sansa. Released in France on January 16, 2013. This exercise in sexy suspense and brain-scrambling mystery is a dazzling, absorbing entertainment which shows off Danny Boyle’s mastery of complex storytelling and black, black humour. K im Newman, Empire Starring James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel, Rosario Dawson. Released in France on May 8, 2013. 3 nominations at the 2014 César Awards for Best Original Screenplay (Philippe Le Guay), Best Original Score (Jorge Arriagada) and Best Actor (Fabrice Luchini). A fitting title for an unabashedly poetic and refined film that sings the praises of the craft of acting with a capital A. […] Cycling with Molière allows these two virtuosos [Fabrice Luchini and Lambert Wilson] to shine through its brilliant dialogs, which they clearly relish, almost to the point of jubilation. Their joy is contagious and truly breathes new life into Molière’s work. Jean-Philippe Guérand, Le Nouvel Observateur PATHE 2013 FILMS 11 (Los amantes pasajeros) by Pedro Almodóvar 2 nominations at the 2013 European Film Awards for the People’s Choice Award and Best Comedy. Pedro Almodóvar followers will be thrilled! A hugely entertaining feel good celebration of human sexuality that unfolds as a cathartic experience. As light and airy as the skies in which it’s set. Jonathan Holland, Variety Starring Antonio de la Torre, Hugo Silva, Miguel Angel Silvestre. Released in France on March 27, 2013. by Eran Riklis Starring Stephen Dorff, Abdallah El Akal. Released in France on February 27, 2013. by Christian Duguay Screenplay, adaptation and dialogs by Guillaume Canet. Starring Guillaume Canet, Marina Hands, Daniel Auteuil, Lou de Laâge, Tchéky Karyo, Jacques Higelin. Released in France on March 13, 2013. A unique story told with restraint, humour and vivid cinematography. This beautiful, highly-ambitious mainstream film is made credible [by Guillaume Canet’s performance]. At last, fiction has caught up with reality. Ben Kaplan, National Post Thierry Chèze, Studio Ciné Live Nominated for Most Promising Actress (Lou de Laâge) at the 2014 César Awards. This film is so rich, so human, with Guillaume Canet’s masterful portrayal of the jockey in all his dark complexity. The father-son relationship is heart-breaking, and the love interest rings unusually true. Only Hollywood at its best could have managed this. Bravo, but above all thank you! Bernard Achour, Le Nouvel Observateur PATHE 2013 FILMS by Danièle Thompson (It Happened in Saint-Tropez) Starring Kad Merad, Monica Bellucci, Eric Elmosnino, Valérie Bonneton, Max Boublil, Lou de Laâge, Clara Ponsot, Ivry Gitlis. Released in France on April 10, 2013. The idea behind It Happened in Saint-Tropez originated in the village of Saint-Tropez, where different ways of life, different worlds, dwell side-by-side. On one side are the party animals, relishing in the harbor’s noise and crowds, and on the other are the introverts, wanting nothing more than a little peace and quiet. Interview with Danièle Thompson, Première (The Guilded Cage) by Ruben Alves Starring Rita Blanco, Joaquim de Almeida, Roland Giraud, Chantal Lauby, Barbara Cabrita, Lannick Gautry, Nicole Croisille. Released in France on April 24, 2013. Nominated for Best First Film at the 2014 César Awards. 2013 European Film Awards: People’s Choice Award. 2013 Alpe d’Huez International Comedy Film Festival: Best Actress (Chantal Lauby) and the Virgin Radio People’s Choice Award (Ruben Alves). This début film has everything going for it: excellent actors, finely tuned screenplay and editing, a perfect balance of laughter and emotion, at once romanticized and hard-hitting. […] The Gilded Cage is a film with universal appeal, about the art of living in harmony, about goodness – a word which is practically obsolete – and what is left of our humanity. Pierre Vavasseur, Le Parisien by Fabien Onteniente Starring Alain Chabat, Edouard Baer, Philippe Duquesne, Lucien Jean-Baptiste, Gérard Depardieu. Released in France on February 13, 2013. Turf was born of my love for mainstream cinema, particularly the tradition of the ‘Sunday-night films’. When I was a kid, just hearing the opening music would lift my mood. Fabien Onteniente 13 PATHE 2013 FILMS 15 THE GREAT BEAUTY by Paolo Sorrentino The year’s grandest most exhilarating foreign film. Richard and Mary Corliss, Time Starring Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli. Released in France on May 22, 2013. Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2014 César Awards. Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2013 British Independent Film Awards (Bifa). 5 nominations at the 2013 European Film Awards including for Best Screenplay (Paolo Sorrentino and Umberto Contarello). In the Official Selection at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival in Competition section. 2014 Oscars: Best Foreign Language Film. 2014 Golden Globes: Best Foreign Language Film. 2013 European Film Awards: Best Film (Paolo Sorrentino, Nicola Guiliano and Francesca Cima), Best Director, Best Actor (Toni Servillo) and Best Editing (Cristiano Travaglioli). 2014 Bafta Awards: Best Foreign Language Film (Paolo Sorrentino, Nicola Giuliano and Francesca Cima). A radiant work on the meaning of life. Drop-dead gorgeous. Luxuriously, seductively, stunningly cinematic! Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times PATHE 2013 FILMS 17 by Sofia Coppola Starring Emma Watson, Katie Chang, Taissa Farmiga, Claire Julien, Israel Broussard, Georgia Rock, Leslie Mann. Released in France on June 12, 2013. In the Official Selection at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival – Un Certain Regard section. Sofia Coppola’s film has all her trademark style, with plenty of dreamy sensuality, wry reverence for youth, and exhaustive observation of the day-to-day lives of the moneyed classes. Unprecedented, however, is the film’s satirical anger, made all the more striking by its gentle subtlety. Thomas Sotinel, Le Monde Adapted from the first two books of Marcel Pagnol’s trilogy. Starring Raphaël Personnaz, Victoire Bélézy, Daniel Auteuil, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Marie-Anne Chazel. Both released in France on July 10, 2013. (The Mark of the Angels - MISERERE) by Sylvain White Adapted from Miserere, by Jean-Christophe Grangé. Starring Gérard Depardieu, JoeyStarr. Released in France on June 26, 2013. MARIUS & FANNY by Daniel Auteuil Depardieu and JoeyStarr make a really convincing double-act. Jean-Pierre Lacomme, Le Journal du dimanche 2014 Lumières Awards : Best Male Newcomer (Raphaël Personnaz). In this film, Daniel Auteuil proves that ‘less is more’. While the script is as wonderfully beautiful, cruel, and funny as ever, the film owes just as much to its actors. Under Daniel Auteuil’s brilliant direction, they convincingly bring to life a story powerful enough to stand the test of time. Anne Michelet, Version Femina PATHE 2013 FILMS 19 by Alejandro Jodorowsky For me, this film is a mental atomic bomb. Alejandro Jodorowsky Alejandro Jodorowsky is one of the world’s greatest film-makers, as well as being a poet of the silver screen. Nicolas Winding Refn Featured in the Directors’ Fortnight at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Starring Brontis Jodorowsky, Pamela Flores, Adan Jodorowsky, Jeremias Herskovits, Alejandro Jodorowsky. Released in France on September 4, 2013. by Ron Howard Screenplay by Peter Morgan. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara. Released in France on September 25, 2013. The director of Marock has character, just like the women in her films. In their own quiet way, they tear into their society’s customs and hypocrisies with humor and biting wit. It’s outwardly snappy and stylish, but beneath the humorous exterior lies a family drama that adds unexpected depth. Anne Michelet, Version Femina by Laïla Marrakchi Starring Morjana Alaoui, Nadine Labaki, Lubna Azabal, Hiam Abbass, Omar Charif. Released in France on September 11, 2013. This beautiful, feminine film dances through a particularly well-written script. Rock the Casbah’s actresses all brilliantly portray the settlement of old family scores with both humor and tragedy. Alain Spira, Paris Match 2 nominations at the 2014 Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture – Drama, and Best Supporting Actor (Daniel Brühl). 4 nominations at the 2014 Bafta Awards including for Best British Film. Screened outside the competition at the 2013 Deauville American Film Festival in the Premieres section. 2014 Bafta Awards: Best Editing (Dan Hanley and Mike Hill). It quickly becomes clear that this is the filmmaker’s masterpiece, and possibly the best film ever made about Formula 1. […] Rush exhibits some dazzling examples of blurring, framing and use of color, with sound effects to match, deftly capturing the pace and grace and, just as brilliantly, baring the souls of its protagonists. This is sport as we’ve rarely seen it before, and I mean that in the most complimentary Noémie Luciani, Le Monde sense. What seemed at first to be an action film, turned out to be just as much a psychological drama centered around two fascinating characters. It was my job to put together the two narrative arcs in a coherent story. Above all, this helped me make the races all the more hair-raising, by directly linking them to the personalities of the characters. Interview with Ron Howard, Le Figaro et vous PATHE 2013 FILMS 21 (The Scapegoat) This uplifting film is completely off-the-wall and punctuated by comic bursts that are completely unexpected from Bertrand Tavernier. Danielle Attali, Le Journal du dimanche by Nicolas Bary Adapted from the novel by Daniel Pennac. Starring Raphaël Personnaz, Bérénice Bejo, Emir Kusturica, Guillaume de Tonquédec, Thierry Neuvic, Mélanie Bernier. Released in France on October 16, 2013. A rhythmic comedy, mocking but without malice, with a first-rate troop of actors. A real treat! Guillemette Odicino, Télérama Quai d’Orsay 3 nominations at the 2014 César Awards including for Best Supporting Actress (Julie Gayet) and Best Adaptation (Antonin Baudry, Christophe Blain, Bertrand Tavernier). 4 nominations at the 2013 San Sebastian Film Festival. Adapted from the comic book by Christophe Blain and Abel Lanzac. Starring Thierry Lhermitte, Raphaël Personnaz, Niels Arestrup, Julie Gayet. Released in France on November 6, 2013. 2014 César Awards: Best Supporting Actor (Niels Arestrup). 2014 Lumières Awards: Best Male Newcomer (Raphaël Personnaz). 2013 San Sebastian Film Festival: Jury Prize for Best Screenplay (Bertrand Tavernier, Christophe Blain, Antonin Baudry). [Nicolas Bary] started telling me the story in pictures, and completely won me over. I said to him, ‘Kid, do what you want, it’s your film.’ […] What I liked about Nicolas was his desire; he’s very desire-driven. He really wanted this film. Daniel Pennac, 1 o’clock news report for France 2, October 15, 2013. by Sylvain Chomet by Bertrand Tavernier Starring Guillaume Gouix, Anne Le Ny, Bernadette Lafont, Hélène Vincent. Released in France on October 30, 2013. The vivid, stylish visuals and the lively music all contribute to the energy and joyful enthusiasm of Bertrand Tavernier’s film. After The Triplets of Belleville and The Illusionnist, Sylvain Chomet breaks away from animation in favor of working with actors in the flesh. But his originality is still there, in his mish-mash of film, cartoon, and literature references, along with his wonderfully wacky cast of characters, brilliantly played by Guillaume Gouix, Hélène Vincent, and, in her final role, the late-lamented Bernadette Lafont. Danièle Heymann, Marianne Anne Michelet, Version Femina PATHE 2013 FILMS 23 by Jérôme Salle Adapted from the novel by Caryl Férey. Starring Forest Whitaker, Orlando Bloom. Released in France on December 4, 2013. Screened at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival’s closing ceremony. Won the 2014 Prix Jacques-Deray. Zulu is flawless; a sharp, tense, and passionate thriller. Released in France on December 18, 2013. Jackie Stewart and Roman Polanski by Frank Simon Released in France on December 18, 2013. Shown at a special screening outside the competition at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. 2 nominations at the 1972 Berlin International Film Festival for the Golden Bear and Special Mention Awards. Directed by Justin Chadwick with the emotional sweep that such a momentous life story demands, this is a sumptuously produced, epic-scale bio-drama stamped from the classic mold. David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter Nominated for Best Song with Ordinary Love (Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr.) at the 2014 Oscars. 3 nominations at the 2014 Golden Globes including for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama (Idris Elba). Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, with Idris Elba at the film’s premiere in London on December 5, just moments before the death of Nelson Mandela was announced. Mr. Elba’s towering performance lends Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom a Shakespearean breadth. Stephen Holden, The New York Times PATHE 2013 FILMS Dame Judi breaks your heart and then mends it. Philomena is that rare delight of a film: immediately accessible to all, with lashings of dry wit to boot, but with a serious story and message at its core that will leave audiences reeling. Ed Gibbs, Sydney Morning Herald UK The best sales were achieved by Phyllida Lloyd’s film The Iron Lady, along with Danny Boyle’s Trance and 127 Hours. 25 PATHE 2013 FILMS 27 INTERNATIONAL SALES AND FRENCH TV SALES Pathé exploits worldwide the rights in its new films as well as its catalogue. PATHE 2013 FILMS QUEEN MARGOT LIVING WORKS To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film’s release, Pathé restored Queen Margot under the supervision of Patrice Chéreau and the film’s editor, François Gédigier. The work was entrusted to Eclair Group to restore the images and to L.E. Diapason for the sound. The images were remastered in 4K from the original 35mm negative, which enabled all the information from the 35mm film roll to be restored, and all the form and finesse of Philippe Rousselot’s photography to be transferred onto the silver screen. The remastered version of Queen Margot was released in theaters on October 23, 2013, in the wake of the death of the director, Patrice Chéreau, on October 7, 2013. 29 In 2013, Pathé furthered its plans to restore and digitally remaster titles from its film library, including: Les MisErables By Raymond Bernard (1934). Released in theaters, and on DVD and Blu-ray on December 4, 2013. Starring Harry Baur, Charles Vanel, Florelle, Charles Dullin. In 1930, when the advent of the talkies sank the career of many a director, Raymond Bernard managed a remarkably smooth transition. Les Misérables is the most striking example of this. The film, edited many times for commercial reasons, was released in a number of different forms, all of them truncated. It was only in the 1970s that Pathé and ORTF suggested that Raymond Bernard restore the film in its entirety. Pathé released the 4K remastered version in 2013, finally allowing Raymond Bernard’s work to be appreciated for its true value and reviving all the emotions of the original version. GErard Philipe by Patrice Chéreau (1994), based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas. Screenplay - adaptation by Danièle Thompson and Patrice Chéreau. Dialogs by Danièle Thompson. In 2013, Pathé enabled the public to rediscover three Gérard Philipe’s films on DVD and Blu-ray HD, including Fever Mounts at El Pao, by Luis Buñuel (1959). This was Gérard Philipe’s last film as he died just after filming. The other films were The Proud and the Beautiful, by Yves Allégret (1953), which was entered in the 1953 Venice Film Festival, and Such a Lovely Beach, also by Yves Allégret (1949), the remastered version of which was screened in June 2013 at the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna and in October 2013 at the Festival Lumière in Lyon. In 2013, digital and mobile software developed by Les Cinémas Gaumont Pathé attracted 3 million users each month. The app, available on iPhone, Android and Windows Phone, covers the majority of mobile platforms. To simplify e-ticket purchasing, improvements have been made to the interface; new functions have been incorporated into the ordering process, and clients can now synchronize accounts when making purchases from any device. 45 CINEMA SUBSCRIPTION CARD Available in France, the Netherlands and Switzerland, the cinema subscription card is still as popular as when it was first launched. In France, two new offers were launched in 2013 to complement the existing Le Pass Solo card. Le Pass Duo now allows two people unlimited cinema trips, with the subscriber able to take a different person with them each time. Along the same lines as Le Pass Duo, Le Pass Duo Enfant is a more family-oriented version, as the accompanying person must be a child under 12. These Le Pass cards are accepted in over 40 towns and cities in France. In the Netherlands, the Pathé Unlimited, which is available in standard and gold versions, offers a minimum cinema subscription of four months. In Switzerland, cinema subscription opportunities are also on offer. Loyalty Card In the Netherlands, the mobile app was downloaded by almost 1.2 million moviegoers. With more than 2.7 million members, Les Cinémas Gaumont Pathé’s Loyalty Card scheme continues to be an attractive option for audiences. In 2013, a new points-system was put in place, and more importantly Loyalty Card benefits have been extended to Le Pass, Solo or Duo, cardholders. The Loyalty Card is free of charge and requires no commitment. By simply presenting their card, moviegoers collect points that are redeemable against tickets or concessions. PATHE 2013 PATHE LIVE PATHE LIVE 47 Rich Variety in Programming Since 2008, Pathé Live has offered both French and international movie theaters the chance to experience often-exceptional cultural events on their screens. Broadcasting this type of content was enabled by digital development. Today, Pathé Live includes more than 130 movie theaters and continues to respond eagerly to new requests. In 2013, as well as its opera and ballet seasons, Pathé Live added a program of artistic and cultural events to its broadcast in movie theaters, offering more concerts and shows (Sexion d’Assaut, M. Pokora, Lilly Wood & the Prick, Taratata 20th anniversary concert, The Rolling Stones, Cirque du Soleil in 3D). In addition, viewers could also go on guided tours of exhibitions on Manet, Munch and Vermeer. The tour of the Pompeii exhibition at the British Museum attracted the most visitors, with a total of more than 17,000 admissions to cinemas. Overall, this program of events attracted a total of 110,000 visitors to French movie theaters in 2013. The re-transmission of performances by the Metropolitan Opera, broadcast by Pathé Live in France, Switzerland, Morocco and Lebanon, confirmed its success by attracting more than 160,000 viewers to over 130 movie theaters. In its role as global producer and distributor of Bolshoi Ballet performances, Pathé Live broadcast 7 ballets in 2013, across more than 900 theaters worldwide for a total of more than 250,000 viewers. Thanks to its international development, Pathé Live is now available in 48 countries. PATHE 2013 49 L’OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS Structured to meet the needs of the premier league Olympique Lyonnais football club, the OL Groupe, of which Pathé has been a shareholder since 1999, is a leading player in the field of entertainment and media in France. The OL Groupe has been expanding 5 complementary business activities: ticketing, partnerships and advertising, marketing and television broadcast rights, branded products (spin-off products, OL Images, etc.), and player transfers. OL has chosen to base its future development on a modern stadium, which will be unrivalled in Lyon – France’s second largest city after Paris – and conveniently located at the heart of its public transport network. The architecture was carried out by the firm Populous, who represent the global benchmark in this field. The complex, destined to be a unique venue, will be open 365 days a year and have 58,000 seats. This new stadium in Lyon, on a site of 45-hectares, should allow the OL Group to develop further with an increase in ticket sales and the creation of new sources of revenue. © February 20, 2014 – R.
