WE WOULD JUST
LIKE TO SAY A LITTLE…
THANK YOU!
It’s during this time of year, as November approaches and another birthday is
celebrated, that we like to think back and celebrate all of the amazing people
who have helped keep this cinema open for over a century now.
We’d like to pay tribute to the cinema’s early managers Arthur Child, followed
by Len and Geoff Thompson, who successfully steered the cinema through
world wars and technological change. We’d like to thank the Friends of Hyde
Park, who have been our passionate guardians for nearly 30 years. We’d like
express our gratitude to Leeds City Council, who so bravely stepped in to save
the cinema from closure. And of course our deep appreciation for you, our
wonderful audience, for continuing to see films in our gas lit auditorium.
And now today, we are delighted to be able extend another huge heartfelt
thank you to the Heritage Lottery Fund, who after agreeing to support our
exciting regeneration project, have helped ensure this cinema now has a
bright new future ahead. From the restoration and protection of our wonderful
original features, to the creation of new facilities to improve access and bring
the cinema into the 21st century, we’re now more confident than ever in the
ability of this Picture House to continue its long history of inspiring, educating
and entertaining audiences in Leeds for many years to come.
Our film programme changes every Friday, below is a rough guide to the titles we have coming up. Based on audience requests, popular
demand and other exciting things we often add in extra titles or extend the screening run for certain films. If there’s a film you’re desperate
to see which we’ve missed do let us know! Our main film times are published every Monday for the following Friday. You can find these by
calling us, visiting us in person, visiting our website or signing up to our free weekly listings email.

THINGS TO COME
( L ' AV E N I R )
Philosophy teacher Natalie divides her time between her family, her current and former
students and her eccentric mother, leading a life of personal and intellectual fulfilment.
Unexpectedly, Nathalie's husband leaves her, and with a newfound freedom Nathalie must
reinvent herself and establish a new way of living. THINGS TO COME sees the irresistible
collaboration between Berlin Silver Bear winning director Mia Hansen-Løve and the legendary
actor Isabelle Huppert (THE PIANO TEACHER) in this intelligent, poetic and naturalistic
exploration of one woman’s pursuit of happiness.

In the lush wilderness of the Pacific
Northwest, Ben (Viggo Mortensen)
lives with his six children in
idyllic seclusion, giving them a
rigorous physical and intellectual
education of his own design.
However when a family crisis
requires him to re-enter the world,
he’s forced to question whether
the life he’s created is really what’s
best for his kids. Reminiscent of
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE in its study of
a supposedly dysfunctional family
finding its way, and with a typically
fine performance from Mortensen,
CAPTAIN FANTASTIC is a charming
and insightful exploration of what
it means to be a parent.

One More Time With Feeling –
Encore
Sat. 10th September – 4.00pm
Directed by Andrew Dominik (THE
ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES),
ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING is the
first opportunity to hear Skeleton Tree,
the sixteenth studio album from Nick
Cave & the Bad Seeds. Originally a
performance based concept, the
film evolved into something much
more significant as Dominik delved
into the tragic backdrop of the
writing and recording of the album,
interweaving performance footage
with interviews, narration and
improvised rumination.
Another chance to see this unique
cinema event following our sell out
performance on the 08th September.

cinematic wonders
you won't want to miss
Last year over 600 films were
released in the UK. (That’s a lot,
right?) Some of these films are
fantastically bombastic, with
equally bombastic marketing
campaigns to boot. However not
all new releases can afford to
appear on the side of doubledecker buses, and as a result
many can pass by unnoticed.
That’s why we have Tuesday
Wonders! This is our way of
highlighting those hidden gems,
films that are exciting, important,
sometimes a little bit different, but
definitely worth seeing. So keep
an eye out for what’s showing
here every Tuesday, and don’t
forget to pick up a loyalty card
too, which gets you in for free for
every four that you see!

Hell or High Water
From Fri. 16th September
At the end of the 1970s, Gary
Numan was one of the world’s
biggest artists. He fused early
electronica with on stage alteregos, to invent something truly
unique. Though his Asperger’s
Syndrome helped forge his music,
it also brought problems and
episodes of depression, near
bankruptcy and periods in the
wilderness followed. However
a renewed passion came into
Gary’s life upon meeting his wife
Gemma, who inspired him to get
back into the studio and on the
stage. ANDROID IN LA LA LAND is
a celebration of a British musicmaking pioneer and the love story
that helped him turn his life around.
HELL OR HIGH WATER is a modern
action drama set in West Texas
where the distinction between
honest men and outlaws has
blurred beyond recognition. Toby
(Chris Pine), a straight-living father
trying to make a better life for his
son, and Tanner (Ben Foster), a
short-tempered ex-con with a loose
trigger finger, come together to
rob branch after branch of the
bank that is foreclosing on their
family land. Vengeance seems to
be theirs until they find themselves
in the crosshairs of a relentless,
foul-mouthed Texas Ranger (Jeff
Bridges) looking for one last triumph
on the eve of his retirement.

A secluded beach seems like an idyllic surfing

the feeding ground of a great white shark and
the perfect holiday turns into a battle of wills,
woman vs. shark.
Regarded by many as Bowie’s greatest
screen work, THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH is
beautiful, imaginative and profound; a film that
influenced a generation of filmmakers and one
that deserves to be revisited on the big screen
once more, 40 years on.

Shot in glorious monochrome, the
big screen version of Highsmith’s
THE BLUNDERER from director
Claude Autant- Lara and his regular
screenwriters Jean Aurenche and
Pierre Bost stars a pre-Goldfinger
Gert Fröbe as boorish bookseller
Melchior Kimmel. After seeming to
escape justice for killing his wife,
Kimmel comes to the attention
of philandering husband Walter
Saccard. When Saccard’s own
spouse Clara comes to a tragic
end, the police are quick to link
the two deaths. Adapting Miss
Highsmith is presented by Filmhouse,
in partnership with Waterstones,
and supported by the BFI, awarding
funds from the National Lottery.
Playing in conjunction with the
Leeds Music Us exhibition running
through September at the Kirkgate
Market event space, Well Done,
Now Sod off is a potted and often
hilarious history of Chumbawamba.
Footage and interviews from the
last two decades retrace the early
days of communal living and
involvement in the miners' strike
of 84-85, their survival through the
Thatcher years and a barrage of
bad press, surfacing in the nineties
wiser but unrepentant.This is the
unlikely tale of a band who spent
more time shoplifting than jamming
and somehow managed to scrape
a living from making radical music
in a conservative culture.
Czech New Wave gem, VALERIE
AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS
weaves a heady mix of fantasy,
fairy tale, gothic horror and
surrealism, to depict seven days
in the life of Valerie, a young
girl navigating the borders
of adulthood and sexuality.
Symbolic imagery, breathtaking
cinematography, and a hauntingly
seductive score coalesce in
Jaromil Jireš’ cult classic to create
one of the most unique and
enduring coming-of-age fantasies
ever made.

In an affluent suburb of Buenos
Aires in the early-80s, a seemingly
normal family makes its living off
kidnapping and murder. Welcome
to the home of the Puccios - and
the astonishing true story of
Argentina’s most notorious crime
family. Winner of the 2015 Venice
Silver Lion for Best Director and
five Argentine Academy Awards,
Pablo Trapero’s thrilling new film is
a true-life tale of corruption and
manipulation, riddled with shocking
intrigue and nail-biting suspense taking place in the final years of the
Argentine military dictatorship and
incipient return to democracy.
After moving to Hong Kong, and
with his wife often away, journalist
Chow soon befriends Su, whose
partner also seems preoccupied
with work. However as the two
friends realise their respective
partners are cheating on them,
they begin to fall for one another,
with neither wanting to stoop to
the level of their unfaithful spouses.
Recently voted the 02nd greatest

by a panel discussion from

From the director of cult vampire
comedy WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS
comes the hilarious HUNT FOR THE

by child services to start a new life with

From Fri. 30th September
Odourscope: A Pungent
Fedorchenko’s arresting drama is a
compilation of 23 short stories about
the women of the MeadowMari.
Known as “The last authentic
pagans in Europe”, the Mari as a
Finno-Ugric peoples who are native
to central Russia.Tripping through
the homes, forests and rituals of the
Mari, Celestial Wives is a magical
portrait of a community which
maintains a close relationship with
nature and folklore. With a special
introduction from Dr Diane Nelson,
Senior Lecturer in Linguistics at the
University of Leeds we aim to use this
screening to explore ideas around
the relationship between languages
and the community that use them,
particularly endangered languages.
Scott Aukerman's 'Comedy Bang!
Bang!' the hugely popular podcast
and TV show comes to the UK
for the first time! This special LIVE
performance features Scott and
very special guests Paul F.Tompkins
(BOJACK HORSEMAN) & Lauren
Lapkus (ARE YOU THERE, CHELSEA?)
doing a totally improvised
programme, with plenty of character
drop-ins.
The near future; humanity has
been all but destroyed by a
mutated fungal disease that
eradicates free will and turns its
victims into flesh-eating “hungries”.
Only a small group of children
seem immune to its effects, and
as they are studied, subjected to
cruel experiments, one little girl,
Melanie, stands out from the rest.
L’ÂGE D’OR provoked a storm
of controversy when it was first
screened in 1930. Now Luis Buñuel’s
surrealist masterpiece returns,
but with an added dimension to
arouse and discomfort: smell. This
performance will see the film’s
scandalous attack on bourgeois
conventions accompanied by an
array of odours, ranging from the
foul to the fragrant. Odourscope
promises to be an exciting,
thought provoking and immersive
experience - for the nose, as well as
the eyes and ears.

The Beatles: Eight Days a
Week - The Touring Years
Sat. 08th October – 4.30pm
Following on from THE GUARD
AND CALVARY, John Michael
McDonagh’s much- anticipated
third film sees two corrupt cops in
New Mexico set out to blackmail
and frame every criminal
unfortunate enough to cross
their path. Things take a sinister
turn however, when they try to
intimidate someone who is more
dangerous than they are.
February 09th, 1964. Seventy-three
million people watched The Beatles
perform, the largest audience in
television history. It was an event
that introduced The Beatles to
America and signalled the birth of
youth culture as we know it today.
But what happened next would
introduce them to the world…
they went on tour. From director
Ron Howard, this remarkable
documentary tells the story of
the band's exceptional touring
years, the effect it had on their
musical evolution, as well as the
incomparable electricity between
performer and audience that
turned the music into a movement.
“McDonagh writes his clever,
coal-black heart out, delivering

In 1952, Ousmane Sembène, a
dockworker and school dropout
from Senegal, began dreaming the
impossible: to become the storyteller
for a new Africa. This documentary
tells the unbelievable true story of
the “father of African cinema”, the
self-taught novelist and filmmaker
who fought against enormous odds
to give African stories to Africans.
Using rare archival footage and
told by a man who knew him best,
colleague and biographer Samba
Gadjigo, SEMBÈNE! Shows how an
ordinary man transformed himself
into a fearless spokesperson for the
marginalised, and became a hero
to millions.
The film tells the tragic story of
Diouana, a young Senegalese
woman who finds work as a
childminder for a French couple in
Dakar. When the couple return to the
south of France, she goes with them,
dreaming of a life of luxury and fine
clothes on the Côte d'Azur. However,
things don't turn out as she planned.
Colle Gallo Ardo Sy, a circumcised
woman, has managed to help
her only daughter escape from
the ritual of ‘purification’ organised
every seven years. Now that the
next ritual is about to happen,
four young girls have fled from
the village to escape from
excision. MOOLAADÉ is a moving,
embracing and life-affirming film
with the power to change longheld attitudes, a film regarded as
Sembène’s masterpiece, made
when he was already 81 years old.
From the attentive gestures of an
aboriginal daughter nursing her
dying adoptive mother, to the
content moderators tasked with
scrubbing photos of Osama bin
Laden from search engines, this
screening explores the politics
and representation of cleaning
and caring.

I, DANIEL BLAKE
The triumphant winner of this year's Palme d'Or, Ken Loach's emphatic drama is purportedly his
last film. It follows the story of Daniel Blake (Johns), a fifty-something carpenter who, after suffering
a heart attack, comes up against the absurdities of the welfare state. Humiliatingly labelled a
scrounger, Daniel befriends Katie (Squires), a single mother to two children who's also suffering on
the breadline. Overwhelmingly moving, I, DANIEL BLAKE exposes the real human suffering which
exists in plain sight. and is a stark reminder of the profound injustices of life in contemporary Britain
“Ken Loach's welfare state polemic is blunt, dignified and brutally moving”
Peter Bradshaw, THE GUARDIAN

PHILSOPHY & FILM
Philosophy & Film is an ongoing series, held in partnership with the University of Leeds, & FILM exploring
philosophical questions raised by some of cinema’s most intriguing films. Our new season launches with a
special off site presentation of Wings of Desire at the historic Left Bank Church on Cardigan Road on the 29th
September before returning to the Picture House in October.
The Wind That Shakes the Barley
Sun. 23rd October – 3.00pm
Winner of the 2006 Palme d’Or, Loach’s THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY examines the personal cost of social
and political conflict with characteristic insight and intelligence. Driven by a deep love for their country, brothers
Damien and Teddy join volunteer guerrilla armies to fight in Ireland’s bid for independence. The period detail is
superb, as are the performances, headed by the outstanding Cillian Murphy.
Following the film, Simon Hewitt (University of Leeds) will present a short talk
exploring themes raised in one of Loach’s most poignant and compassionate works.

Kubo and the Two Strings
Mon. 24th, Wed. 26th &
Thu. 27th October
I am the Real Kevin Atherton
Tue. 25th October - 6.15pm
My Scientology Movie
Tue. 01st November – 6.30pm
KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS is an
epic action-adventure set in a
fantastical Japan from acclaimed
animation studio LAIKA. Kindhearted Kubo (Parkinson) ekes out
a humble living, telling stories to the
people of his seaside town. But his
quiet existence is shattered when he
accidentally summons a spirit from
his past which storms down from
the heavens to enforce an age-old
vendetta. Now on the run, Kubo
joins forces with Monkey (Theron)
and Beetle (McConaughey), and
sets out on a thrilling quest to solve
the mystery of his fallen father, the
greatest samurai warrior the world
has ever known.
This discursive screening presents
a body of films by artist Kevin
Atherton made in Leeds in the
early ‘70s. Coming from the Isle of
Man, Atherton was amongst the
first students to study Fine Art at the
newly established Leeds Polytechnic
in 1969 – a context for art education
that became nationally renowned
for its radicalism. Atherton's Leeds
films wittily confront ideas of
individualism and cultural identity,
prefiguring his pioneering early
video and live performance work.
‘I find that the most inexplicable
behaviour is motivated by very
relatable human impulses,’
comments Louis Theroux as he
heads to Los Angeles for his feature
documentary, in collaboration
with director John Dower and
double Academy Award winning
producer Simon Chinn, exploring
the Church of Scientology. Suffused
with a good dose of humour and
moments worthy of a Hollywood
script, My Scientology Movie is one
documentary that really proves that
sometimes truth is stranger than
fiction.

Bruce Goldstein presents a unique

The Fabulous Nicholas Brothers, Fayard
and Harold, rank among the greatest
dancers of the 20th century. Despite
racial hurdles, the self-taught AfricanAmerican entertainers became one of
the biggest musical acts of their time.
Their show-stopping numbers made them
international icons, with fans including
Gene Kelly, who teamed up with them in
THE PIRATE; Michael Jackson, who once
had Fayard as a dance coach; and
Fred Astaire, who named their STORMY
WEATHER ‘staircase’ number the greatest
of all musical sequences.
