When to Raft Adventure and the Adirondacks go
The Lake George Area is located on Interstate 87 (Adirondack Northway) between Exits 18 and 26. An international airport is located in Albany, only 50 miles south of the area, while locally the Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport serves private planes and offers call-ahead car rental. Bus lines stop throughout the area and Amtrak stops nearby in Fort Edward. Most major car rentals are also available in the area. Adventure and the Adirondacks go hand in hand! Up for an action-packed adrenaline-infused adventure? Then GRAB A PADDLE and brave the waves of whitewater rapids or meander through calm, pristine water and some of the most spectacular scenery ever! Let the fun begin! When to Raft SPRING RAFTING: You can enjoy the biggest water and highest adventures, because our river heights are driven by snowmelt, rain, dam releases and the aquifer. Many spring days are warm, but wetsuits are provided to mitigate the cold water & cool weather. ›‹ SACANDAGA RIVER: Schedule begins with spring ice-out. ›‹ HUDSON RIVER: Runs fastest and highest in April and May, bolstered by put-in facilities and dam releases daily April 1st-3rd Wed. in June by the Town of Indian Lake. SUMMER RAFTING: Enjoy the warm water and weather with water heights controlled by dam releases, rain and the aquifer. Cool off by swimming in the river pools and current. From the 3rd weekend in June through Columbus Day, there are dam releases Tue, Thu, Sat & Sun. Additional releases Labor Day Monday & Columbus Day. Everybody enjoys these great family adventures. ›‹ SACANDAGA RIVER: This is the best whitewater if you are looking for “fun-for-the-whole family”. ›‹ HUDSON RIVER: Trips are run in July and August. ›‹ MOOSE RIVER: Summertime warm water rafting, ideal for families. RAFTING KAYAKING TUBING STAND UP PADDLING CANOE ACCESS SITES FALL RAFTING: Enjoy the river during “Fall Foliage” season as the rivers wind through gorges and the wilderness. River heights are controlled by dam releases, rain and the aquifer. You have time to see the leaves from the slow moving rafts (2-6mph). The Adirondack Mountains are on fire with bright colors plus the fun of thrilling water. We have many warm fall days and the summer water cools down slowly during the fall. Wetsuits are available to mitigate cooler weather. From the 3rd weekend in June through Columbus Day, dam releases Tue, Thu, Sat & Sun. Additional releases Labor Day Monday & Columbus Day. ›‹ SACANDAGA RIVER: Schedule continues into October. ›‹ HUDSON RIVER: September and October rafting trips available. ›‹ MOOSE RIVER: Challenging rafting is available in fall. # 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 RIVER SACANDAGA RIVER River Location ›› Lake Luzerne UPPER HUDSON RIVER GORGE River Location ›› Indian Lake to North Creek MIDDLE HUDSON RIVER GORGE River Location ›› North Creek to Riparius MIDDLE HUDSON RIVER GORGE River Location ›› North Creek to Riparius UPPER HUDSON RIVER GORGE River Location ›› Newcomb to Indian Lake to North Creek LOWER HUDSON RIVER GORGE River Location ›› Rt 418 Thurman Station to Lake Luzerne MOOSE RIVER River Location ›› McKeever to Port Leyden MOOSE RIVER River Location ›› Rt 28 to McKeever • Class I • Class II • Class III • Class IV • Class V The Rivers The Big Lake SACANDAGA RIVER: Flowing from the Great Sacandaga Lake to its confluence with the Hudson River at Lake Luzerne in southwestern Warren County, its Class II and III water provides great family rafting. Although we have more than 120 lakes and ponds, the undisputed favorite among paddlers is magnificent Lake George. Its crystal clear water is mostly spring fed, natural sandy beaches and a wealth of islands and small bays invite intimate exploration. Created by glacial activity millions of years ago, this is a large lake, 32 miles long, and is best explored by sea kayak. Private mansions, rustic camps, resorts and services of all kinds line a portion of the shoreline. The rest is wilderness with mountains that virtually dive into the shoreline. Camping is available on 44 state-owned islands, some with one site, others with as many as 96. The northern tip of Northwest Bay and Dunham Bay runoff at the southern end of the lake provide paddling through interesting wetlands. A haven for herons and other wildlife, both can be accessed by nearby roadways. Even if you don’t own a kayak or canoe, you don’t have to miss out on the action, many outfitters and some marinas rent both and will provide you with a PFD and instructions to get you afloat. Paddle on! HUDSON RIVER: Beginning as a brook out of Lake Tear of the Cloud (an upper-elevation pond near the summit of Mt. Marcy in the Adirondack High Peaks), the Hudson is joined by several other wild rivers as it gathers momentum, shooting through cataracts and gorges, growing ever deeper, ever wider, to become the “Mighty Hudson” at New York City. Rushing through Hamilton, Warren, and Saratoga Counties, the Hudson offers rafting second to none. For 17 miles, from Indian Lake to North Creek, the Hudson is considered one of America’s ten best whitewater rivers. During spring freshets, Class III, IV and IV water explodes through the gorges, prompting experts to declare that rafting the Hudson at high water is to “experience one of the greatest whitewater rivers of them all.” Summer and fall can be challenging and exciting with the Abanakee Dam release. MOOSE RIVER: Located about 60 miles west of the Hudson, the Moose River has its most exciting flow between McKeever & Port Leyden. This section has numerous Class V rapids and is one of the toughest stretches of whitewater in the US. Spring & fall on the Moose are more consequential than most rivers. Truly experienced rafters may enjoy this trip. Families enjoy the Moose River in the summer. For river conditions (flow rates/gauge readings) call 518-465-2016. The 3.5-mile (1 to 2-hour) trip is an adventure for all ages. The large water release (4,000 c.f.s.) gives the rafters the thrill of a wild river and can be used as a stepping stone for more ambitious trips in the East or West. #2 UPPER HUDSON RIVER GORGE: Indian Lake to North Creek Running from the dam-controlled put-in site at Indian Lake in Hamilton County to North Creek in Warren County, this 17-mile gorge trip is one of the greatest single-day rafting trips in America. The trip starts on the dam-controlled Indian River, which drops 150 vertical feet in 3.5 miles before reaching the confluence of the Hudson. Further on, a 20-foot ice-cold waterfall from Huntly Pond adds its Brook Trout stream to the Hudson. The next 10 miles on the Hudson offer continuous rapids spotted with welcome calms for resting. Blue Ledge Rapids and Narrows, the Osprey Nest, Beaver Dam, O.K. Slip, Gunsight, Kettle Mountain and the final Harris Rift are the common names used by the guides to refer to the sites the raft passes. The 17-mile wildwater trip drops approximately 650 vertical feet and passes through one of the greatest Adirondack Park land masses. #3 MIDDLE HUDSON RIVER GORGE: North Creek to Riparius This trip shows the gentler side of the Hudson River as it passes the quaint village of North Creek on its way to another picturesque village, Riparius, following the path of kayakers and rafters of the famous annual White Water Derby for a fun-filled half-day adventure. #4 MIDDLE HUDSON RIVER GORGE: Riparius to The Glen This half-day trip provides an easy trip on the Hudson River as it continues on its way from the Adirondack High Peaks toward New York City, passing through wilderness areas where peace and tranquility are the passwords and family fun and excitement are the order of the day. #5 UPPER HUDSON RIVER GORGE: Newcomb to Indian Lake to North Creek Running from Newcomb to North Creek, this two-day, 25 mile trip takes you from Newcomb through the heart of the Adirondack wilderness of the Cedar River, Indian River, Hudson River Gorge and the Boreas River. OVERNIGHT. #6 LOWER HUDSON RIVER GORGE: Warrensburg to Lake Luzerne to Glens Falls This one day trip flows along the banks of the Hudson River in Warrensburg into Lake Luzerne. From Lake Luzerne you’ll canoe/kayak to Glens Falls with carry-outs around dams and falls. #7 MOOSE RIVER: McKeever to Port Leyden The Moose River is an exceptionally challenging river passing through some of the most pristine areas of the Adirondack Park. The trips are more consequential than most other trips and the possibility of floes and cold water swims are high. Therefore, spring trips on the Moose River are for experienced class IV & V rafters. #8 MOOSE RIVER: Rt 28 to McKeever This is a delightful summertime warm water rafting trip.
