Practical Information Cell Phones: Some students may want to carry a cell phone. There are many phone options. Many cell phone companies require a contract and monthly payments. However, you may wish to purchase a phone without a contract, using pre-paid minutes. This is a practical, short-term solution and you do not pay monthly rates. Pre-paid phones are available at a variety of electronic retail outlets, including Walmart. In this agreement, you are able to purchase prepaid minutes and do not have to pay a monthly rate. You can ask an associate that works at the cell phone counter to help you out. They are very kind and will help you pick the best choice. Keep in mind that international calls from your own personal cell phone can be very expensive. If you do get a cell phone make sure to log into www.sevis.org and enter in what your cell phone number is. Other Wireless Technologies: Skype is also an inexpensive option for you to use to speak with your family. You can add some dollar credits to your account and call from your computer. The calls can be made internationally with your computer or phone. Wait another ten (10) days to apply for your Social Security Number (If you go before, it will delay everything) 4. Monthly reports are to be completed every month. Failure to adhere to this policy will result in automatic cancellation of the participant’s J-1 program. 5. Second jobs cannot interfere with your primary employer at any time. No exceptions. 6. Many students buy a bicycle to get around. Make sure you buy a helmet, lock, reflectors, head light and a light colored shirt to be seen when riding. Please bring your employer a small gift, such as: keychain, postcard or chocolate. It will bring a smile to their faces and they will love hearing about your home country.
