John Burroughs, author and naturalist, noted that, "Knowledge
without love will not stick. But if love comes first, knowledge is
sure to follow." This premise wonderfully describes one of the
foundations of Waldorf education. At a Waldorf school, students’
minds are reached via their hearts. Relationships form not only
with classmates and teachers, but also with the curriculum itself.
Waldorf students learn that the world is made up of relationships,
and a person’s ability to create them and work within them is
critical to success and fulfillment in life. Similarly, teachers and
parents grow within rich long term relationships resulting from the
school community working together to support the children.
The primary relationship in a Waldorf school is that between student
and teacher. Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf education,
believed that a child learns most easily from a teacher he or she loves.
A Waldorf teacher thus works hard to develop a loving relationship
with her students. This relationship is so critical that in the ideal
Waldorf situation, a teacher remains with her students from the

of
first through the eighth grade. This allows the teacher to really
understand each student and what modality of learning works most
effectively for each one. Time is not wasted each year getting to
know an entirely new group of children and what makes each child
tick. The relationship has such depth by the end of the journey that
when the teacher is confronted with a potentially rebellious 14 year
old, he will still be able to see the child at age six that once stood
before him.
According to Steiner, if a child’s heart is touched he will take in
his education more deeply than a student who is simply asked
to memorize data. Students in a Waldorf school are offered
a curriculum that consciously cultivates their capacity to be
emotionally connected to the world around them. This creates
a pathway for students to become productive members of their
community in addition to absorbing ideas and information optimally.
While solid academics are critical for students, if they cannot “play
well with others” their chances of leading successful, fulfilling lives
are diminished. In his book Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman
says that IQ only accounts for about 20% of our ability to succeed
in life. The major attributes of success are our social and emotional
intelligences (EQ).

Kuleana
R e sp o nsibi l i t y is a l l a b o u t w e . . .
Dear Friends,
Thirty-seven years ago a group of parents
committed to making a difference in
their children’s lives. They committed to
starting a new school on Maui offering an
education that was alive—an education
that would provide their children with
the academic skills they needed to
survive in the world but also do so much
more. They wanted an education that
would engage their children’s lively spirits and interests. They
wanted an education that got their children excited about being
part of the world. They wanted an education that would help
their child discover just who they are, in all of their uniqueness, and
what their contribution to the earth would be. And so Haleakala
School was created.
Just imagine the possibilities if each member of our community
made the effort to take even one positive action to bring success
and vitality to the school. With over 200 current students, 500600 parents, thousands of grandparents, alumni, and friends, our
individual and collective focus on the school will have a significant
impact. Former Board President David Wagner asks “Why have
random acts of kindness when you can have intentional acts of
good will?”
This year we invite you to join us in making Haleakala Waldorf
School our kuleana. Join us in strengthening the beacon of light
that radiates from Mount Haleakala on a daily basis because truly
“It’s all about we.”
Aloha no,
The parents who began the school and the first teachers who
stood in the classrooms took on an immense responsibility, or
kuleana. They made their children’s educational experience a
priority in their lives. Because of the kuleana they took on, our
children still benefit today. Maui, and indeed the rest of the planet,
receives children into the community that are equipped and
excited about making a difference in the world.
Jocelyn Romero Demirbag
Chair of School
Rosa Say, founder and head coach of Say Leadership Coaching,
describes kuleana as “one’s personal sense of responsibility.” She
also says that kuleana “drives self-motivation and self-reliance, for
the desire to act comes from accepting our responsibility with
deliberance and with diligence.” What would it mean for Haleakala
Waldorf School in 2009-2010 if each of us accepted the success and
thriving of Haleakala Waldorf School as our kuleana? For some,
perhaps it would mean sharing a skill with their children’s classes.
For others, it might mean committing to speaking positively about
the school with other parents and with their friends. And for
another family, it might mean moving the school higher up on their
philanthropic list.

A Rose Shared …
c o nn e c t ing a c r o ss t h e g r a d e s . . .
There is an annual tradition at HWS which pairs up each first grade
student with an eighth grade student. At the beginning of the
school year, this relationship commences with a Rose Ceremony.
The eighth grade students give “their first graders” a welcoming
rose at an assembly of all the grades in Christopher Hall as the
first grade is introduced to the school for the first time. As the
year unfolds, a deep and sweet bond begins to blossom as the
eighth graders seek out their first graders for connections on the
playground or around the campus.
At the last assembly of the year, the first grade students give the
graduating eighth graders roses, reversing the ceremony that began
the year. There are usually many tears of farewell and long hugs
good-bye. But what remains for all the children, like the lingering
scent of the rose, is the lesson of kindness and connection, heart
to heart, that will last a lifetime.
In the spring, the eighth grade students begin a special project
focused on their first grade friends. They compose, illustrate,
and bind a story book featuring their first graders as the main
characters. This is such a special gift, not only as a book, but also
in terms of taking the time to think about this young child and
what would be good for him or her. To really observe and reflect
back the nature of a young child requires a level of compassionate
thoughtfulness that is not always seen in adolescents.
This is the gift the eighth grade students receive from the first
graders: the opportunity to see themselves as role models, to
reach back into their own experience at the beginning of their
journey through the grades and connect with their "inner" seven
year old. They are able to free themselves to re-capture a sense
of innocence and carefree joy that is sometimes lost at puberty as
hormonal shifts begin to take place. One only has to look into the
eyes of these eighth grade children and see the shining reflection
there of the sparkle in the eyes of the first grade children to know
how genuine these relationships are, and how far the students'
experiences go beyond the classroom.

Alumna Spotlight
M I N O M CCLEA N
I spent ten years of my childhood on the Haleakala Waldorf school
campus; eight of those years were under the tutelage of Gary
McDanniel. What a lucky child I was!
When asked to write about my Waldorf experience,
I wondered how I could distill a whole decade into half a
page. My reflection resulted in one word: RESPECT. Haleakala
Waldorf School not only taught me to respect my teachers and
administrators, but more importantly I learned to value myself,
my peers, and the environment. This was a result of the school
community completely respecting me. From the time I was five,
I was greeted with a handshake by Mr. McDanniel every morning
and every afternoon. We closed our day together with a verse
focusing our attention on being our best selves out in the world.
To this day, some of my closest friends are my schoolmates from
Haleakala Waldorf.
Now that I am a parent myself, I have an even higher respect for
Haleakala Waldorf School. It is clear to me just how important
this campus and community are to our future generations. I look
forward to the journey through the school in a new role as a
parent, witnessing the same wonder that I experienced as a child
take on new meaning through the eyes of my precious daughter.
Thank you!
Mino
As a current board member, I have returned to the school for
many of the wonderful events on campus. The level of respect
between the older and younger children continues to amaze me.
At an all-school meeting in Christopher Hall recently, a 1st grader
raised her hand to ask a question. Here she was, sitting with all of
her peers, many of whom were much older. I was thrilled at the
confidence she exhibited in asking her question in front of the
whole school. It was such a simple but telling act, and I don’t know
if anyone else in the room was as taken with this as I. After all, it is
the norm at Haleakala Waldorf School.

Annual Fund
July '08-June '09
P r o v i d ing f o r H W S e x c e l l e n c E
MAHALO – Thank you to all parents, grandparents, alumni/
ae, faculty, staff, friends and foundations for your generous
financial support of Haleakala Waldorf School’s Annual Giving
Fund. Your philanthropic support is an essential part of our day
to day operational budget. Blended with tuition income, the
Annual Giving Fund makes Haleakala Waldorf School possible.
From the outstanding programs our children are nurtured
by, to fine quality supplies, ongoing training opportunities for
our teachers, maintenance of our beautiful historic campus
and so much more, we couldn’t do it without you. We are
proud to report that together, our dedicated community gave
over $475,000 to help make HWS the inspiring school that
it is.
Thank you to everyone who helped with the Annual Giving
Campaign and the HWS phonathon, with special thanks to
Advancement Committee members John Elder and Nancy Meola
and our Annual Fund co-chairs Kathy Ross, Gretchen Heitzman
and David Wertheim. Regardless of the amount, we are so
grateful for the donation of each individual and family.
Together we strive for the highest ‘Kulia i Ka Nuu’- to provide the
best for our children.
This year, we were able to expand our tuition assistance
program to help families in need and also introduce
the HWS Rising Sun Scholarship Fund, supporting exceptional
students.
In addition to Annual Fund contributions, we are delighted to
highlight a number of special restricted gifts supporting:
• A new website
• Professional development for classroom teachers
• Hale Ho’okipa (House of Hospitality) Courtyard Pavilion
• Executive Transition process
• Creation of our new governance model
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the matching gift
donor who helped us double some of our Annual Fund
contributions.
Our HWS Holiday Faire attracted more than 1500 people
and raised over $56,000. Funds from the Holiday Faire are an
integral part of tuition assistance and our operational budget
that keep HWS running from year to year.
Many have stretched to make HWS a philanthropic priority by
giving as fully as possible. For those who were willing and able
that has meant stepping up to join the Leadership Giving Circle
Punana ke ola ‘ana (The Nest of Life), with a contribution of
$1,000 or more to the Annual Giving Fund.

Haleakala Waldorf School Receives
The 2009
Mike Lyons Maui Community Award
HWS was honored to be this year's recipient of the highly
prestigious Bank of Hawai’i Mike Lyons Maui Community
Award. The selection committee acknowledged the school's
work in developing its new governance model, it's executive
transition, the new Rising Sun Scholarship Fund and the
work of our outstanding Board of Trustees. As the winner,
HWS received $10,000 to be used for teacher's professional
development in grades 1-8. The check was presented at a
ceremony at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on May 19.
Each year, Bank of Hawaii selects a worthy non-profit
organization based on effective fulfillment of mission,
outstanding executive and board leadership and intended
use of the award for professional development. The award
is given in honor of the late Michael H. Lyons II, retired Bank
of Hawai’i Senior Vice President and Maui District Manager.
Lyons was a dedicated community leader and served as
a role model throughout
his 41-year career with
the bank. He was also
a dedicated member of
the HWS community as
a parent, board member
and HWS grandparent.
His wife, Mette, served
for almost 20 years as the Nene Kindergarten Assistant
Teacher, and his daughter Kristina is an alumna, parent, and
board member.

Parent Connections
The Lamaku Parent Association is our Haleakala Waldorf School
parent organization whose mission is to be of service to the school
and our children.
The organization works through various committees focused on
needed volunteer areas. There are committees working on raising
our “green” sustainability awareness, taking care of our campus,
supporting our administrative offices, creating community events
and activities, fostering fun and supportive relationships amongst
our parents and families and much more.
All parents of children currently enrolled at HWS are members of
Lamaku. Share your passions and gifts with HWS this year! What
do you love? There is sure to be a group working on something
that is perfectly suited to you!
Please contact Susie Peck at [email protected] for more
information.
Mahalo to all those who worked so hard to make our first year of
the Lamaku Parent Association such a great success! And mahalo
to those parents who have volunteered to work on the Lamaku
Council for the 09-10 school year.
President, Jacqueline Wood
Vice-President, Sherry Fisher
Treasurer, Bill Alpenfels
Co-Secretaries, Marie Fitzsimmons and Agna Pang
Corresponding Secretary, Maka’ala Palmore
Also serving on the Lamaku Council are Volunteer Coordinator
(and parent) Susie Peck, Chair of School (and alumna parent)
Jocelyn Romero Demirbag, and Teacher Liaison (and parent)
Spanish Teacher, Vickie Conmy.

The Heart of Education
Cover article continued
In today’s world, families frequently move to follow jobs or personal
interests. Fifty percent of children experience one of their parents
moving out of their home. People are expected to hold more than
seven jobs over their adulthood. Opportunities to learn to work
through a relationship, through good times and bad, are slim. In a
Waldorf school where you have the same teacher and classmates
for eight years, you have the opportunity to experience growth
through mistakes and forgiveness. You learn to celebrate the
unique gifts and differences of others as well as learn tolerance for
them. Social situations are viewed from each player’s perspective.
This is the basis for peace and “the healthy social life.” The answer
to conflict is spending time together with open and receptive
hearts, imagination, and the ability to honor everyone’s perspective
until that conflict is worked out. It takes time and commitment
for people to work together and not to “bail” when times
get tough.
In the end, community relationships at a Waldorf school develop
one’s capacity to meaningfully connect with fellow human beings
and the world. These connections also enhance Waldorf students’
academic achievement and their ability to create fulfilling lives
for themselves. In the Hawaiian language, the word for learn
is the same as the word for teach: a’o. On the educational
journey here at Haleakala Waldorf School, we are lucky enough
to be each other’s teachers and each other’s students. As
a result, we are all enriched by the workings of the heart
in education.

A beautiful, home-like infant/toddler center called the
I’iwi Nursery and Parent-Toddler Program for families
with young children was opened August 19, 2009. The
I’iwi Nursery and Parent-Toddler Program provides
children with a safe and nurturing nursery environment
while offering parents the opportunity to be inspired,
supported, and transformed in their day to day
interactions with their young child.
Monday through Wednesday, a nursery school for young
children (without their parents) between 18 months and
three years of age will be offered. The nursery will be
taught by Julie Ybarra, a skilled Waldorf Early Childhood
Teacher who was instrumental in opening the school’s
‘Apapane Preschool several years ago.
Thursday and Friday mornings, the I'iwi Program will
offer parent/child groups for children from infancy to
three years old with their parents. These lively and
informative sessions will be taught by Kim Raymond, a
Waldorf Early Childhood veteran of 30 years who is
also a grandmother.
Thursday and Friday afternoons, “Miss Kim” will
be offering adult workshops. Lifeways classes will
be offered on Thursdays, providing an in-depth
exploration of current parenting topics such as
creating rhythm in the home, discipline, nutrition,
sleep and celebrating the seasons.
Friday afternoons will feature Waldorf Arts
workshops, providing hands on instruction in the
arts and crafts of the Waldorf curriculum. Projects
include toy and doll making, knitting, felting, candle
dipping, beeswax modeling, painting, and stitching.
Be sure to let your friends and family know about
this exciting new opportunity at HWS!
