Words from William,
Why do we aerify greens? That is a
question that is asked every year when
we finish with our greens aerification.
It’s a great question. Aerification is
disliked by almost all members and
maintenance employees alike; and no
one dislikes it more than the golf course
superintendent (meaning me). We send
the crew out to do a physically
demanding job most golfers do not want
to see, usually during the hottest time of
the year (this year it was 98@ the first
day and 100@ he second day). The
equipment mechanic knows that his
work load will triple trying to keep the
mowers sharp as they mow in the sea of
sand now covering the greens. Bed
knives on the mowers last a matter of
days instead of weeks.
Here’s why we do it. We aerify because
we all want healthy, firm greens with a
good speed. On tees we aerify to relieve
compaction and create air spaces in the
root zone. Aerifying a USGA constructed
green (which is a sand based root zone
and underlying gravel drainage system) is
done mainly to remove thatch with the
benefit of relieving compaction. By core
aerification we are able to keep thatch at
a manageable level. If aerification was
not performed, the surface of the green
would become “soft and puffy” and
maintaining the low heights needed for
quality greens would result in scalping
the turf. The end result would be poor
quality greens.
As you know, we now only core aerify
once annually. We try to keep the
disruption to a minimum while achieving
the amount of thatch removal necessary
for the future health of our greens. It
may seem like aerification consumes the
summer, but it is a short 2 to 3 week
interruption to ensure healthy greens for
the other 50 weeks (or 49).
Thank you,
William Smith
Certified Golf Course Superintendent

Tennis Talk
Wow! No rain, just hot days on the court. We got through two months of camp.
Many of our juniors played baseball well into July with great success. They played
tournaments when they got a chance. And the tournaments they played were some
of the biggest in the south. We had CCC members playing in the Qualifying
Tournament. Jack Schondelmayer finished fifth in Georgia and eighth at
Southerns. Mary Weston Courville played well at a Southern Level 3 winning the
backdraw. She also won the Challenger in Rome, GA. Grace Hemmings came in
3rd at our Georgia Clay Court Tournament and finals of doubles. Lily Norred won
a level 4 in Macon. CCC has a ten and under team that went to state this past month.
Our junior players keep moving forward!
CCC had three mixed teams in June and also fielded 4 combo teams in July. Hal
Casion’s 8.0 mixed team is headed to State in Augusta the second weekend in
August!! So the question is. . . who wants to play USTA league in the Fall? We want
to carry over our successful summer into the upcoming season. Let’s start forming
our teams now. It would be great to have a 2.5 ladies team this fall. Season begins
September 6.
Club Championships are starting on August 11. Please call 706-323-9116 or email
Jaclyn at [email protected]. We hope to have a great week of tennis.

if you would like to play league tennis
this fall. We would like to be well
represented at as many levels as possible.

“The 10 Commandments
of Match Play”
The Second Commandment: Thou shalt
maximize your finest strengths. If your
forehand is greater than your opponent’s
forehand, then seek to engage in
forehand-to-forehand combat. Look to
dictate points with your forehand by
using not only the cross-court pattern, but
the inside-out pattern, as well as the
inside-in forehand pattern. The key is to
identify what you do better than your
opponent and then choose your patterns
based on facts.
