A very warm welcome to Saltaire Arts Trail 2015 We’re excited and delighted to be back, filling the village with art and bringing your favourite Open Houses and Makers Fair, each with a twist to keep them fresh, as well some really special extras, thanks to major funding boosts from Bradford MDC and Arts Council England. We have something for everyone this year: creative activities for you to be part of, demonstrations to engage and amaze you, contemporary craft & design for you to admire, desire, commission and buy, and challenging exhibitions, installation and performance to keep your artistic appetite whetted throughout the long weekend. Saltaire really is a unique place, not just for its internationally recognised architectural heritage, but for a community that can come together to create something of the size, quality and variety of this wonderful event - in its own home, so to speak. Our theme for this year is Craft and Making, and there are opportunities throughout the weekend not only for you to encounter well-made objects but also to find out more about the act of making through demonstrations and experiences. There’s a lot to see, so we’d just like to make sure you don’t miss some of the special treats we have for you. Rural Crafts Re-imagined... at the Salt Building is a unique exhibition of the very best of traditional craft in contemporary practice and comes to Saltaire as the first step of its 2015 tour of the north of England. Silvia Ziranek is an international performance artist who has researched Saltaire with local historian Roger Clarke in order to produce her new work, MEVILLE to be performed at 2pm each day. Fuse Art Space will create a multi-sensory, synaesthetic experience of moving light, sound, colours and shapes. And then there’s our redesigned main programme: The Makers Fair now attracts the very best of contemporary craft and design. Unique in concept as well as construction, this is affordable art with a real wow factor. Our Open Houses now consist of not one, but two trails! For Made in Saltaire, you’re invited into the homes of artists who live and work in the village, and who have curated their own homes, inviting friends and colleagues to share. In the Villagewide Gallery, you’ll see artists from across the UK, selected by professionals and hosted by local residents and businesses. With so much to see, it’s fortunate that it’s a long weekend... A credit and debit card payment facility will be available throughout the Open Houses. Valerie Wartelle Alice Fox Local artist Alice’s work is contemplative and quiet, but look closely and you’ll discover there is complex activity; patterns can appear both random and organised. Look again and there is something new to discover. Each piece can be seen as a small record of a walk; a journey or moment from a journey. alicefox.co.uk Gillian Widden Image detail: Clare Caulfield, Rejectamental, AC Telfer, William Hughes, Alice Fox, Stef Mitchell, Judy Sale A unique opportunity to see behind the doors of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Local residents have kindly offered their homes as gallery spaces affording you the opportunity to see the best contemporary artwork from across the country in domestic settings. This collection explores her preoccupation with the way that objects can be created to manipulate the spaces they contain, and the spaces they occupy. Fragile and delicate yet brittle and sharp, Gillian’s work made from the stalks and calyx of the Fuller’s teasel, hangs in space. There is an emptiness about it, an absence. But, as the shadows play beneath it, there is a fleeting presence, and a sense of something having been abandoned that recalls our agricultural and industrial past. gillianwidden.co.uk Imogen Clarkstone Based in Yorkshire, Imogen creates angular, folded, sculptural containers that lean, peer and stretch into the spaces they inhabit. Drawing inspiration from the ever-changing colours and moods of the land, sea and skyscape of Yorkshire and travels further afield, Valerie combines fibres, threads, textiles and print elements to create felt pieces with a contemporary and refined feel. valeriewartelle.co.uk Zareena Bano Incorporating the different styles of Arabic script, Bradford-based artist Zareena uses mixed media such as copper, sand, acrylic and outliners to create bold and vivid works. Coupled with the elegant flow of the Arabic calligraphy the geometric patterns and modern contemporary designs provide depth and contrast. facebook.com/zareenaart Kennet – Short boat moored on the canal 2 Bradford Photographic Society Founded just 7 years after Salt built his mill, Bradford Photographic Society is one of the earliest photographic groups in the world. Bringing you their selection of Saltaire’s hidden visual treasures in a digital display, they’ll also be about during the weekend recording events on the streets, in the houses and at the Makers Fair. Helen Peyton Helen is an artist print maker who specialises in limited edition lino reduction prints and monoprints. She creates unique and detailed artworks, using colour, line and form as her inspiration. Artist in residence at Craven Museum & Gallery, her reduction linocuts are based on the artefacts from its collection. helenpeyton.com William J Gall Following a sunny, but cold Sunday afternoon walk in February, William created his work for the Saltaire Arts Trail ‘Seen through the trees’. He was inspired by the static hard lines of the buildings against the more fluid and twisted lines of the trees which often obscured them, but now bare of leaf, allowed the view to become clear. williamgall.co.uk Images: Imogen Clarkstone & William J Gall Open Houses Village-wide Gallery 4 5 3 15 William Henry Street 4 Madeleine Phiri Madeleine creates unique, hand-crafted photographs from 120mm black and white film. Passionate about creating art in the dark room, all photos are printed with high precision, great attention to detail and a good amount of contrast. madeleine-phiri.com Lucas Stephens Lucas lives in Norway and Thornton and regularly collaborates with his partner Morwenna Catt. Using paint affords him the opportunity to use colour in his art works. Whilst being bi-lingual, Lucas prefers for paintings to speak for him. stephens.no Morwenna Catt Designed to encourage connections, intrigue and engagement, Morwenna’s work can make socio-political points and have a dark, subversive edge, but it can also be playful and tongue in cheek. She is drawn to projects that allow stories to be told and creative narratives with objects. morwennacatt.co.uk Rejectamental Jacqui’s recent works have been inspired by traditional folk and often grim, macabre fairy tales from around the world. Using things or matter rejected as worthless or useless, Leeds-based Jacqui hopes to provide this rejectamenta with a new life as works as art. rejectamental.co.uk Dan Booth Dan is a Yorkshire printmaker who produces limited edition, hand-pulled screen prints of the places and scenes that move and inspire him. His work has been described as looking ‘instagrammy’ and whilst there are similarities his working process is slow and reflective, combining both digital and handmade techniques. DesignArtNonsense.co.uk Little Ram Studio Gary and Heather Ramskill use a small hand press to produce prints which range from the single plate to the more complicated reduction prints which can involve many hours of delicate cut work. Gary captures the finest detail but through a muted lens whereas Heather prefers to capture the soft stroke of a water colourist. folksy.com/shops/little Ramstudio 40 Caroline Street scale and likes to incorporate this into her work; to create something from nothing, transforming the discarded, unnoticed or unseen to something large and present. juliaclarke.org.uk mood and behaviour from wary, through ferocious to resplendent. Surrounded by images and live observation of birds, Champagne Birds are created downstream from Saltaire in the Aire Valley. 7 Amelia Street 6 Cath Brooke Yorkshire-based Cath uses rural, urban and, most recently, industrial landscapes as a starting point for her prints. She sketches in all weathers, and so the elements play a large part in defining the spirit of her work. Using colour and composition to create an atmosphere, her work includes a sense of history and place and a human connection. cathbrooke.co.uk Rosanna Casserly Georgina’s time consuming practice of dissecting and reconstructing maps by hand brings order to the chaotic world that a map represents. A map has its own inherent language that illustrates the geographical and social history of a place. By applying a strict set of ordered techniques, she manipulates this information to create each piece of work. cargocollective.com/ georginaparker Julia Clarke Julia works with both dried and living willow, wire, steel, paper and ceramics to create sculptures for indoor and outdoor spaces. She has always been fascinated by 7 champagnebirds.co.uk 5 Georgina Parker 39 Whitlam Street Rosanna loves the spontaneous and surprising nature of monoprinting; each print is a genuine one-off. She likes to illustrate the hustle and bustle of café culture, very much part of Saltaire. Her most recent prints attempt to capture the humour and eccentricity of Steampunk in a series of profile portraits. Champagne Birds Re-shaped and up-cycled champagne wire is a dream material for birds. It gives strength without weight, and can suggest fluid, fleeting shapes. It can convey Jo Aylmer Using ceramic and mixed media sculpture, Jo’s work is motivated by an interest in physical and psychological responses to material and form. Lumen investigates our reaction to colour and light. Jo uses the illuminated translucent vessels to explore fragility, clarity, perfection and imperfection. In creating a relationship between light and clay, Lumen is concerned with sensation and memory. joaylmer.com Anthony Ratcliffe Once winner of the Yorkshire ‘Fellsman’ long distance race, Yorkshire-born Anthony uses running and mountaineering as a source of inspiration for his coloured woodcut prints. Researching natural history, archaeology, geography and literature, he is particularly interested in the remnants of the past land usage found in remote areas of our coastline and moorlands. anthonyratcliffe.co.uk Carla Moss Carla’s work is inspired by our relationship with the environment, and the landscapes shown at the Trail are inspired in particular by the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan. They are landscape lines made by a mixture of materials, including wax, pencil, charcoal, pins and a tracing wheel. carlamoss.co.uk Images: Morwenna Catt, Dan Booth, Georgina Parker, Jo Aylmer, Anthony Ratcliffe Art Parade 6 7 Emma Britton 57 George Street 8 The inspiration for Emma’s decorative glass splashbacks, complementary homewares and interior glass panels comes from British suburbia and the beauty found in everyday objects. Such as a bright purple Iris poking its head through a rusty old gate or a charming colour palette on a front door. Emma Britton emmabritton.net See entry on 39 Whitlam Street Stef Mitchell India Ritchie Yorkshire-based Stef creates original monoprints printed directly from nature. The ink, plant and paper have equal say in the process, and as such any small change, small growth, chance and subtle nuance of difference all play their part. This exhibition documents a field corner in the Yorkshire Wolds. The ‘Souniemi (The Finnish House)’ screen print series is a response to a 1908 summerhouse in Tampere, Finland. Its interior and traditional lifestyle of reliance on natural resources has been preserved and maintained. The prints incorporate hand drawn and photographic imagery to emulate the technique of hand tinting photographs which was popular in the 1900s. fieldandhedgerow. blogspot.co.uk/ indiaritchie.co.uk Judy Sale Local artist Judy creates contemporary paintings using mixed media. Her work and home has recently been featured in the Yorkshire Art Journal, Yorkshire Post and Your Home magazine. judysaleartist.co.uk William Hughes Justin Leeming William’s drawings explore the experience of place. His current practice incorporates traditional methods and materials such as paper making, collage, technical semiphoto realistic drawing and photography. Most recently, he has created a series of drawings made directly onto the back of photographs thus blurring the boundary between photography and representational drawing. Yorkshire-based Justin is a figurative painter working primarily in acrylic or oil on canvas. Originally concentrating on portraiture, he has more recently diversified his output to produce large scale canvases which reference popular culture. He uses photographic references to compose his paintings, reinterpreting them into something which looks tangible, but never really existed. cargocollective.com/ williamhughes justinleeming77.crevado. com/paintings Saltaire Bookshop 9 John Cockshaw Combining photographic reference to Yorkshire beauty spots with the dramatic and mythical writing of JRR Tolkien in ‘The Lord of The Rings’, Yorkshire-based John’s work employs a variety of scales to produce evocative and enigmatic views of middle-earth, employing the first person view point and suggestive reference to Tolkien’s dramatic story. frommordortothemistymountains.com Shaeron Caton-Rose Shaeron Caton-Rose together with art makers from Henshaws Arts and Crafts Centre, Knaresborough, have created a collaborative and individual response to wellknown proverbs or idioms that refers to seeing and hearing. Allowing the art makers the rare opportunity to show their own artworks in the public domain, this exhibition also offers us, as visitors the chance to see artwork that is often hidden away from the wider art world, whilst confronting our own understandings, presumptions and prejudices about disabilities often carried with us unaware. shaeron.com 23 Jane Street 10 Sally McArthur Local artist Sally trained as a botanist. The present series of work stems from a re-examination of her A Level Biology exercise and textbooks and shows the fascinating patterns, shapes and colours that are normally hidden from us when we look at plants and animals but can be seen in microscopic slides. James Bywood Walking for James has become an integral part of his work, providing him with the space to think and the inspiration to create. He is currently compiling these experiences into a series of artworks that will both inform (in the way that Wainwright created his celebrated guides), and provide an imaginative leap for the viewer, perhaps back to the places they once trod themselves. jamesbywood.co.uk Robert Burden Working in inner cities, mostly at night, Robert’s artwork speaks of loneliness and alienation, of not being able to feel a part of certain cultures, always being an outsider. The various shops and buildings become like beacons of light, enticing and providing security and warmth out of the darkness. robertburden.co.uk Images: India Ritchie, Justin Leeming, James Bywood Image detail: Cath Brooke 39 Whitlam Street continued 8 11 Yorkshire’s open spaces. Currently pushing her own boundaries, Francesca is concentrating on painting billowing skies and windswept landscapes using bolder colours and strong brushwork to catch the drama. frobertsfineart.co.uk Michele Friswell AC Telfer Alyson creates dynamic textural paintings which depict moments, things she has seen and experienced whilst out and about. She aims to convey what the moment was like both physically and emotionally. Her interpretations are not literal, taking liberties with colour and form. Michele is inspired by the stories of everyday life. Using a mixture of photography, drawing, old maps and stitch, each origami piece has its own individual story which interacts with the piece as a whole. A Visitor’s Offering celebrates the offerings and her experience of Saltaire and its history and the colourful temples of Vietnam and Cambodia. michelefriswell.com based artist Elizabeth’s work tells a story and stirs a debate about the people in the images. Finding objects and photographs that are lost, forgotten or neglected, Elizabeth weaves a narrative around them. Barbara Young Barbara works with acrylic on canvas and mono-printing on paper. Whilst abstract, her painting focuses on colour relationships and is usually informed and inspired by the landscape. Her monoprinting is an exploration and interplay between form, line and colour and is thus more representational than abstract. clikpic.com/barbarayoung Clare is an established artist living and working in Saltaire, producing paintings and prints inspired by Yorkshire as well as the many great cities over the world to which she has visited. Her lively and evocative paintings encapsulate the energy and buzz of the cities whether it be the jumble of apartments, store fronts and Manhattan skyscrapers, the Venice canals or Salts Mill closer to home. clarecaulfield.co.uk Francesca Roberts A self-taught artist from Yorkshire, Francesca takes inspiration from the diverse and majestic landscape of 68 Victoria Road 12 Home of: Elizabeth Chambers Using a variety of media, painting, illustration and photographs Saltaire- Saturday 23 – Monday 25 May 10am – 5pm New for 2015, we are delighted to introduce a strand of the Open Houses which specifically highlights the wealth of talent residing in Saltaire and that of their invited peers. From curious commodities to ceramic heads, oil paintings to monoprints, photography to limited edition silk screen prints, it is clear that the village of Saltaire and the surrounding landscape inspires and feeds many of these artists. All of the resident artists and most of their guests will be on hand to talk about their work, so this is a great opportunity to perhaps discover more about the artistic life of Saltaire past and present. A credit and debit card payment facility will be available throughout the Open Houses. actelfer.co.uk Clare Caulfield Open Houses Made in Saltaire Giuseppina Ardolino Giuseppina’s Throwing in the Towel represents the impact of her father’s redundancy from the Christy Towel Manufacturer. The images focus on the old towels found in the derelict factory and those bought or given to her father whilst in employment. Like the once open building, the towels represent something clean and functional. giuseppinaardolino.wix.com/ gardolinophotography Images: Francesca Roberts & Barbara Young Image detail: Hannah Lamb, Aupalola, Elizabeth Chambers, David Starley, Carolyn Mendelsohn 32 Park Street 11 10 1 John Burks Ruth Fettis John finds the physical repetitive nature of cutting stone one of the most meditative things that he does; it calms his mind, encourages contemplation and frees his imagination. Through his carvings, he seeks to establish a similar connection for the viewer, to instil a feeling of calm and solidity. Ruth tells modern, everyday narrative stories through a traditional medium. Using relief-printing, lino and wood-block, she has exhibited widely across the UK and most recently in nearby Cartwright Hall, Bradford with ‘Here We Live’. Her collaborative work with Michelle Wren has been selected to feature in the Amnesty International 2016 diary. johnburks.com Home of: Ian Burdall Much of Ian’s subject matter comes from the East Coast of Yorkshire and is centered around lines, shape and colour. Boats are a particular favourite, and the sheds that they are kept in, built in and eventually abandoned next to. Starting as a photographer shooting in both digital and film, he has more recently started painting in oils. Anne Burks Anne’s Ceramic Heads and angular pots are hand built using slabs, pinching and coiling. Based mostly around the human head, these figures come from imaginary worlds, are quietly thoughtful and generally are adorned with hats or headdresses. Her earthenware pieces are decorated with the contrasting textures of underglaze and glaze. 10 Edward Street 2 Sharon has always drawn, stitched or gardened. Having known Saltaire all her life, her inspiration is taken from Saltaire, her tiny ‘yarden’ and her allotment behind the URC Church. Using felt as the initial base for her embroidery, Sharon has recently become obsessed with vintage techniques and thread due to the extra texture, depth and colours they provide. 3 75 Albert Road 4 Darrell Evanes Darrell uses recycled metals in his sculptures to create semi-abstract shapes and forms which suggest lines within space. Chains are often found within the sculptures linking the past to the present and providing a counter lever between space and gravity. The concept of fragments in time is central; the history of what once was and is no more. poetryinspace.com ruthfettis.co.uk Timid Elk Wakefield-based Rebecca Hoy originally trained in ceramics but found more joy in creating the paper test pieces and as such now primarily works in paper. She is currently exploring the theme of repetition in the curious commodities collection. Occurring again in the same way or form, she finds the potential that repetition can bestow on an item fascinating. timidelk.com Home of: Sharon Ashton 24 Fanny Street Lis Holt Home of: Amy Whitehead ‘Home’ is a series of five paintings inspired by the famous quote by novelist John Updike ‘to give the mundane its beautiful due’. In each painting Amy attempts to capture the beauty and drama in the suburban surroundings of her native West London and current home of West Yorkshire. Home of: David Starley Internationally recognised for his heavily textured oil paintings, David’s most recent work has brought woodland and individual trees to the fore. Focussing on the texture of the bark and the forms and characters of the different specimens, the viewer is led to a great appreciation of these living structures often taken for granted. amywhitehead.sqsp.com Daniel Shiel Andrew Olssen Andrew’s work explores the idea of belonging to a generation whose identity was formed, to a significant extent, by the media and ‘the collective experience’. Working primarily in video, themes such as racism, political correctness and heritage are explored in the role of a particularly irreverent archivist. He uses repetition to transform and dislocate the viewing experience. Drawing on his career as an archaeologist, Daniel’s collected images provide the materials or pallets with which he explores and develops themes associated with the past, absence and decay. He explores the rich textures and patterns evident in every day natural and artificial objects; details often unseen or overlooked at first glance. danielshiel.com Lis uses ‘T’ material to make sculptural forms, coiled vessels, slabbed boxes and a range of ceramic jewellery all with a coastal influence. Reflecting the dynamics of the natural environment, she takes inspiration from her appreciation and admiration of the inherent properties of clay and glaze material together with the ancient ceramic forms. northern-potters.co.uk Pat Beard As a versatile artist, previously working in textiles and ceramics, Pat has more recently turned her talents to designing and creating functional and decorative items from fused glass. With a fondness for experimentation and often a touch of humour no two pieces are ever the same. Images: Ian Burdall, Timid Elk, Amy Whitehead, Daniel Shiel Image detail: Pat Beard 43 Rhodes Street 13 12 32 Ada Street 6 5 Butterfly Rooms 73 Bingley Road (Open 10-5pm Saturday, 10-4pm Sunday and Monday) 7 Home of: Tessa Norton “Nothing’s too good for the ordinary people” wrote Berthold Lubetkin “The articles are of great variety... all are characterised by peculiar lustre and brilliancy, equal in many casesto silk.” The commendation for Titus Salt’s fabric at the 1851 Great Exhibition Lustre Fabrics made Saltaire famous in the 1860s. With an appearance of silk, the glamorous and shiny lustre cloth used for formal wear, wedding dresses and ball gowns was made unexpectedly from alpaca. Tessa’s Lustre Fabrics explores the relationship between luxury and the municipal and quotidian. It incorporates a series of text pieces, a celebration of nationalised industry and the innovative alpaca lustre cloth itself, now rarely seen and no longer in mass production. tessanorton.co.uk Home of: Jade Marczynski Specialising in vintage inspired hand embroidered textile art pieces, Jade works free hand using cross stitch, filling stitch and backstitches mainly. Her current work is based on Saltaire village but has previously covered vintage transport, recipes and childhood rhymes. jademarczynski.co.uk Ann Davies Ann’s passion is for drawing, colour, pattern, quirky illustration, storytelling, embroidery, knitting, crochet, doll making and much more. After a long career in nursing, Ann is fulfilling her lifelong desire to be an artist and delights in her beautiful studio and lots of unknowns. annd49.co.uk smaller pieces. Focussing on walking and making as methods of reconnecting the world immediately around her, Hannah’s personal, emotional responses to the environment and surface are recorded through stitch, print, photography and construction, piecing together fragments of place and time. carolynmendelsohnphoto.com Hannah Lamb Hannah creates installation works, site-specific work, large textile works as well as saltspress.com hannahlamb.co.uk Porch Press Kate Rawnsley Vicki Munro produces hand letter pressed and screen printed cards, posters and gifts. Working professionally as an Art Director, Porch Press is a personal project which reflects, and is inspired by, her interests in graphic design, typography, music and humour. Her letterpress pieces are produced using vintage wood type on one of her two presses. The allotment series was created as a reaction to Kate’s move to Bradford from the Yorkshire Dales. She is particularly curious about the unconscious processes that package perception; how memories are continuously morphed and exaggerated. What we see, changes imperceptibly into what we need to see. porchpress.tumblr.com a range of household goods such as colourful rugs, mats, baskets and slippers in original designs. Using discarded t-shirts and surplus factory production, the possibilities for using this slightly elastic material are unlimited. Anna Tosney Anna’s inspiration comes from the Yorkshire Dales and the world around her; the beautiful (usually) rainy skies, trees, sheep, fields and often slightly humorous scenes she comes across in everyday life. Having experimented a lot in the field of printmaking, she has developed a method which is a mixture of drypoint and monoprinting making each piece of work unique. annatosney.co.uk 19 Ada Street 8 16 Titus Street 9 Carolyn Mendelsohn Carolyn’s past life as an artist, theatre and filmmaker informs the way she thinks and feels, and the way in which she creates her work. Inspired by the great painters and their use of light, she creates beautiful timeless photographic portraits and landscapes that have a painterly quality. block or digital printing, she creates paper prints, textiles and furniture, featuring patterns which reflect Saltaire’s iconic images, stories and history. Home of: Salts Press Rachel Webb’s modern patterns and prints depict Saltaire’s architecture and history. Using varied mediums such as screen printing, laser cutting and Sarah Harris Sarah combines her passion for travel and a curiosity for her surroundings in her work.
