DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard was created to withstand weather and moisture exposure. It has become the preferred substrate under brick, stone, stucco, EIFS and siding because of its exemplary track record. DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard should be specified for any project where flexibility and easy sheathing installation are paramount without the headaches and expense of delamination, deterioration, sagging and warping. Eight Reasons to Choose DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard Gold Exterior Guard and competing products. By virtually every critical measure, DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard is superior. 1. Mold Resistance 6. Superior Weather Protection: Independent tests confirm that DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard, with its patented, inorganic glass mat design, scored a 10 (indicating no mold growth detected) in the category of mold resistance when tested as shipped in accordance with ASTM D 3273. DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard integrates a water-resistant, treated core with a glass mat face and back to provide superb protection from the elements. Panels will not delaminate or deteriorate due to weather — even during construction delays that last as long as six months after installation. 2. Strength: DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard is manufactured under one or more of the following U.S. patents: 4,647,496; 4,810,569; 4,879,173; 5,135,805; 5,148,645; 5,220,762; 5,319,900; 5,342,680; 5,371,989; 5,644,880; 5,704,179; 5,791,109; 5,718,785; 5,883,024. Other patents pending. Glass mats penetrate into the panel to make an integrated unit that offers superb strength; outstanding resistance to delamination, deterioration, warping and job site damage; and an excellent bonding surface for EIFS. The flexural strength of DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard is approximately the same in both directions. This means DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard can be installed either vertically or horizontally without sacrificing wall strength between studs. DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard also protects and helps stabilize structural framing. Available Sizes/Dimensions 3. Stability: DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard is available in ½" thickness and DensGlass Gold Fireguard® Type X Exterior Guard is available in ⅝" thickness. DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard panels are manufactured in a 4' width and 8', 9' and 10' lengths. Other lengths available upon request. DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard is extremely resistant to rippling, buckling and sagging, even under humid conditions — which makes it particularly suitable for soffits. In actual tests, DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard exceeded ASTM C 79 standards for humidified deflection by a factor of 5 times over the standard for paperfaced gypsum sheathing. Patents Standards and Code Compliance DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard conforms to ASTM C 1177. Application standards where applicable are in accordance with Gypsum Association Publication GA-253 for gypsum sheathing or ASTM C 1280. • ICC-ES Legacy Report 574 • N.Y. Limitations • DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard is exceptionally resistant to weather, but it is not intended for immersion in water or sustained exposure to water and moisture. Cascading roof/ floor water should be directed away from the sheathing until appropriate drainage is installed. • The use of forced air heaters creates volumes of water vapor which, when not properly vented, can condense on building materials. The use of these heaters and any resulting damage is not the responsibility of G-P Gypsum. Consult heater manufacturer for proper use and ventilation. Avoid any condition that will create moisture in the air and condensation on the exterior walls during periods when the exterior temperature is lower than the interior. • When DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard panels are used in slanted wall applications, that portion of the wall must be temporarily protected from the elements by the use of a weather barrier such as 15# felt prior to application of the cladding. Also, exposed wall ends such as those that may be found in parapets must be covered to prevent water from infiltrating the cavity. • G-P Gypsum does not warrant and is not responsible or liable for the performance of the cladding or exterior systems applied over DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard. The suitability and compatibility of any system is the responsibility of the system manufacturer or design authority. • Do not laminate DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard to masonry surfaces; use furring strips or framing spaced at manufacturer’s specifications. • DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard is not intended for roof applications. For roof applications consult our DensDeck® Roof Guard brochure. • DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard is not intended for tile applications. For tile applications, consult our DensShield® Tile Guard brochure. • DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard is not a structural product and should not be used in lieu of plywood where required. • Do not apply DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard below grade. • For all installations, design details such as fasteners, sealants and control joints per system specifications must be properly installed. Openings and penetrations must be properly flashed and sealed. Failure to do so will void the warranty. • Do not use DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard as a base for nailing or mechanical fastening. Fasteners should be flush to the face of the board, not countersunk. In some situations, where additional protection against air and water infiltration is desirable (i.e., in lieu of building felt), see the chart below for long-term treatment methods. Choose the method best suited to your needs. (Keep in mind that DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard is neither a vapor barrier nor a permanent exterior cladding product. A finish cladding should be applied over the sheathing within six months. Always consult with the surfacing or cladding manufacturer to be sure the joint treatment selected is compatible with surfacing or cladding material. Also contact your local building code official for requirements regarding sheathing and system protection prior to final construction. How to Protect Against Air Infiltration and Water Penetration Short-Term Protection Product Required Taping provides short-term barrier protection against wind for the duration of the DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard six-month limited warranty against normal weather exposure. Press a good-quality contractor’s tape firmly onto sheathing joints and around openings with a gloved hand. Several strokes back and forth should provide a good bond. For short-term protection against wind and water, use exteriorgrade elastomeric caulking along all joints, edges and openings. Use backer rod for openings larger than 1/8". • Contractor Sheathing Tape No. 8086 or equivalent, 2" minimum width, 3M Corporation, St. Paul, MN 1-800-364-3577 or 651-733-1140. Avoid any condition that will create moisture in the air and condensation on the exterior walls during periods when the exterior temperature is lower than the interior. C. When DensGlass Gold panels are used in slanted wall applications, that portion of the wall must be temporarily protected from the elements by the use of a weather barrier such as 15# felt prior to application of the cladding. Also, exposed wall ends such as may be found in parapets must be covered to prevent water from infiltrating the cavity. D. G-P Gypsum does not warrant and is not responsible or liable for the performance of the cladding or exterior systems applied over DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard. The suitability and compatibility of any system is the responsibility of the system manufacturer or design authority. E. Do not laminate DensGlass Gold Exterior Guard to masonry surfaces; use furring strips or framing spaced at manufacturer’s specifications. F.
