It’s truly a labor of love for collectors and show organizers John & Linda Welsch, who have been running this annual event for a good part of its twenty-nine year history. There’s no charge for either parking or admission to the show. And no, the floor isn’t covered with fancy carpeting, and there’s no mood music playing either. 5702a The 29th Annual Native American That lack of pretension doesn’t mean Artifact & Antique Show owes a lot to that the show lacks in quality - this event is one of the Midwest’s best longtime organizers John & Linda Welsch. They’ve grown the event, founded Native American shows, drawing dealers and serious buyers from both near in 1984, into one of the best Native American shows in the Midwest or any- and far. where. For more show information, they Those of us not schooled in the prehistoric period of North America probcan be reached at 920-923-3842 ably didn’t know that Wisconsin has been a cultural center for indigenous peoples for more than 12,000 years. Those first Paleo-Americans were known to have visited the area near what is now Hixton, Wisconsin to make stone tools from the local Hixton quartzite that’s unique to the site. The stone was widely distributed too, with Hixton Quartzite stone points dating to 9,000 BC and older having been found as far away as Kentucky! You’ll find some exceptional examples of it here at the Baraboo Show too, most notable in the amaz- ing display of collector Gene Hynek. The Badger State region was also home to another early civilization, known today as the Old Copper Culture. Maybe I slept through high school history class, but I had no idea that Wisconsin’s Old Copper Culture peoples were among the world’s first metalworkers, producing beautiful and functional forged copper objects as far back as 7,500 BC. I found several exhibitors with examples of these copper tools and ornaments, most priced at only a few hundred dollars. Fast forward several thousand years and you’ll come across the other main category of Native American collectibles: trade goods. As Western “civilization” spread across the nation, native peoples began producing everything from rugs and pottery to baskets and beadwork to trade for manufactured goods at what became known as Indian trading posts. A few even survive to this Day. Dennis Arbieter’s Rainbow Traders had many examples of such handicrafts. They’ve been one of the nation’s premier auction houses dealing in Native American objects for more than three decades. Finds there included a geometric Navaho rug still retaining its signed Burnt Water Trading Post “thumbprint” tag ($700) – plus some choice Navaho Yei rugs, which depict stylized & elongated ceremonial dancers both male and female. In fact, you can find almost anything associated with indigenous American peoples at the show, from prehistoric stone tools & points to carved catlinite pipes to early trade tomahawks. The photos will give you an idea of what the event has to offer. The Baraboo Native American Show is definitely worth the trip, whether you’re an experienced collector of Native American history or not. All of the dealers are collectors at heart, and are more than happy to share their years of knowledge - and enthusiasm - with even the most casual shopper. For more information about the show, you can contact show organizers John & Linda Welsch at 920-923-3842. And as always, keep an eye out for the 30th Annual Native American Artifact & Antique Show in the Auction Action Antique News! Jim Hanus came with more than just Native American pieces, like this jumbo vintage fish spearing decoy (with pen for scale), asking price $85. Shoppers had a wide array of period beadwork to choose from at The Kerr Gallery, including this circa 1900 Cheyenne woman’s bag in perfect condition - $550. 414-224-1457 Two outstanding beadwork pieces from John & Linda Welsch: the 1880s Southern Cheyenne women’s boots priced at $4,800, the Sioux fully-beaded man’s vest with American flag & tipi motif at $13,500. 920-923-3842 Period Native American craftwork & artifacts are focus of the show, but you’ll find vendors with everything from decoys to fossils & more sprinkled in. There were lots of Inuit soapstone carvings to choose from at South Carolina’s Wintergreen Farms, my favorite this 8” reclining walrus, circa 1940s & priced at $295. 803-415-0760 Group of nineteen fieldfound obsidian stone points, from Dan Maas $1,800. 608-788-5745 I found this early Acoma Pueblo wedding pot at Estate Buyers of La Crosse, 12” in height & priced at $1,250. 608-785-2274 Continued on page 8 7 From Estate Buyers of La Crosse, an iron butcher’s trade sign/meat rack measuring 8’ in length $3,750. 608-785-2274 Dan Maas had one of the best catlinite pipe displays at the show, with examples like this 10” horse effigy pipe, asking price $800. More highlights from Wintergreen Farms: the 608-788-5745 Inuit sealskin beaded moccasins priced at $195, the Eastern Cherokee carved wood grease bowl at $200. 803-415-0760 There were hundreds of stone artifacts to choose from at Rainbow Traders, among the best this authentic Birdstone, asking price $2,800. 618-372-0248 Dennis Arbeiter of Rainbow Traders with a circa 1950s Burnt Water Trading Post rug with Laura Redhorse Murphy “thumbprint” tag still attached, measuring 33” x 60” & priced at $700. 618-372-0248 Choice textiles at Dennis Arbeiter’s Rainbow Traders included these Navaho Yei and Medicine Woman Ceremony rugs. I found this early Dallas J. 618-372-0248 Valley (Prairie du Chein, WI) hollow-carved crow decoy in Alan Nyberg’s display, asking price $475. 608-778-5523 1890s Grand Army Picture Book, from Alan Nyberg - $125. 608-778-5523 A trio of vintage Ojibwa quilled birch bark pieces from John Welsch: the 10 1/2” diameter floral-decorated covered basket with family provenance priced at $350, the 5 1/2” covered basket in a beaver motif at $160, and the 8” miniature winnowing tray at $145. 920-923-3842 Lac du Flambeau tribal member Gregg Guthrie brought some old family photos just for fun, including this 1914 photograph of his dad as a little boy in full regalia! There was a little bit of everything at Robert’s Relics, from a WWII Officer’s Mess menu from Bataan, Philippines ($20) to this large stone axehead - $750. 708-516-0239 8 Continued from pages 6 & 7 Wisconsin’s Gordon Morris brought a huge informational display (and many for sale too) of prehistoric copper artifacts he’d personally found in northern Wisconsin. I had no idea, but Wisconsin’s Copper Culture Indians were among the first metal workers in the world, producing objects such as these Gene Hynek brought part of his famous harpoon tips and crescents as long as 7,500 years ago. collection of Hixton quartzite stone points, including these early Clovis Culture points both found in Richland County, Wisconsin. 608-574-1851 Two period highlights from Robert Olson: the near-mint Montana Crow beaded possible bag priced at $1,000, the 11” x 16” parfleche bag at $950. Quality finds at Sill Tribal Trading ranged from a circa 1940s-50s Maria Martinez black-on-black pot ($1,250) to this 1930s deer-hide woman’s wedding shirt $800. 952-484-0582 Shoppers found wonderful oddities at Schoolmaster Antiques; my favorites this circa-1910 bobtail horse windmill weight complete with weight-box ($595) and Buckeye Universal mercury Incubator Thermometer $29. 608-356-1017 Exhibitor Charles Betz has been buying & selling for more than fifty years, and brought finds like this Marv Strahota mallard pair ($250) and framed set of American Indian Chiefs tobacco cards $150. Adopting real Florida manatees for family and friends this Holiday season is natureinspired, thoughtful gift-giving that helps Save the Manatee Club increase conservation and education efforts for the endangered marine mammals and their aquatic habitat. It also helps holiday shoppers stretch those often limited budgets. Last year, Lisa Cartossa from Holt, Missouri, decided that since her two young nieces, Lily and Rose from North Carolina, were fortunate enough to have most everything they needed, she would adopt manatees as Christmas presents for them. Lisa chose adoptees “Paddy Doyle” and “Flash,” who regularly winter at Blue Spring State Park, from Save the Manatee Club’s Adopt-A-Manatee program. All of the manatees available for adoption can be viewed on the Club’s website at http://www.savethemanatee.org/adoptees.htm. Two new manatees recently added to the list of adoptees are from Alabama, “Zewie” and “Bama.” An annual manatee adoption costs $25, which is just a little over $2 a month, and includes a color photo of a real manatee, an adoption certificate, biography, membership handbook, and subscriptions to the Club's newsletters which feature updated reports on the manatees in the adoption program. Shipping is free within the United States. Gift adoptions are sent with a personalized holiday message. Or for a $35 tax-deductible donation, each new member will also receive Save the Manatee Club's 2012 wall calendar, featuring spectacular manatee photos to enjoy all year and well past. “When my nieces received their adoption packets for Christmas, I was told you could not have heard two children screaming with excitement louder than they were,” said Lisa. “Immediately, the manatees’ pictures went on their walls. They knew about manatees, but Save the Manatee Club’s adoption program created this passion and enthusiasm in them that’s very wonderful for me as an adult to be part of. I can’t tell you how thrilled my nieces are to get the newsletter addressed personally to them. They read every word front to back. Who knows, the Club may have just created the next generation of marine life specialists dedicated to the conservation of these wonderful creatures.” Save the Manatee Club, a national nonprofit organization, was co-founded thirty years ago by singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett. Funds from the Holiday gift adoptions help with manatee rescue, rehabilitation, and release efforts; research; education and public awareness projects; conservation work to protect manatees and their habitat; and for programs in the United States, Central and South America, the Wider Caribbean, and West Africa. Manatees are listed as endangered at the state, federal, and international levels. Patrick Rose, aquatic biologist and Executive Director of the Club, points out that manatees face tremendous challenges to their survival from human activities. “In Florida alone, since record-keeping began in 1974, more than 38% of manatee deaths where cause of death is known were human-related. So it is imperative that we continue to educate the public about the presence of manatees in our waters. Adopting a manatee is a great way to learn more about this beloved species and how to help make a difference in their lives.” Find out more information about manatees and Holiday gift adoptions by contacting Save the Manatee Club at 500 N. Maitland Ave., Maitland, FL 32751, or calling 1800-432-JOIN (5646), or visiting their web site at www.savethemanatee.org, where you can also sign up for the Club’s free E-Newsletter.
