We have put together an easy mnemonic to 3 The PI Staff 4 Exercise— It’s Good Medicine Summer means vacation, travel, and living and enjoy the summer season. playing outdoors—sometimes in uncomfortable or exhausting heat. Rx: Vacations—Take as Often as Needed A disease like Parkinson’s can be challenging, and can feel like a sentence to an ever smaller world. However, there are many ways to plan and prepare for a refreshing experience— whether you are traveling the world or taking a day trip. Below are some time-tested tips to help ensure enjoyable travel. Remember, TPPP: THOUGHTFUL PLANS are the PREPARATION for PAMPERING (TPPP). THOUGHTFUL: Prepare yourself mentally for unexpected challenges and problems BEFORE you lock the front door. Thoughtfulness will help you frame how you will manage the inevitable surprises you may encounter on a trip. Remember Murphy’s Law—it is often true that what can go wrong, will go wrong; the test is in your reaction to it. Maintain a hopeful outlook—the moment you walk out the front door, your vacation begins—and any moment can be the source of your best memories, stories, and adventures. Concentrate on the journey—it is not just the destination that determines your level of rest and relaxation. Try to enjoy the screening at the airport; talk to the transportation safety agent and the flight attendants. A smile and a kind attitude will spread like tanning oil amongst your (often grumpy) fellow travelers. Keep things in perspective—instead of letting circumstances be cause for anxiety or stress, put yourself in a positive frame of mind before you leave. That way the moment the toilet paper gets stuck to your shoe becomes a source of your own private amusement instead of embarrassment. Have confidence that you can solve problems and take action even if it means asking for extra help. When you think ahead and maintain a positive view of yourself and travel, you will find that every aspect of your trip can be a source of continued on page 10 adventure and fun. People of The Parkinson’s Institute By Clyde Taylor Chief Operating Officer, The Parkinson’s Institute It is a wonderful experience for me to lead the staff at The Parkinson’s Institute (The PI), together with Dr. Langston. We often talk about the ways you, our patients, inspire us—you are the reason we come to work each and every day. Clyde Taylor Chief Operating Officer BOARD of dir e c tor s Thomas D. Follett Chairman of the Board Peter C. Nosler Vice Chairman Our patients share so much with us, so I want to tell you more about us—who the people of The Parkinson’s Institute really are. There are 70 men and women who share the goal of caring for those who have Parkinson’s disease (PD), creating better treatments, and, ultimately, finding a cure. I work with great people, and I want you to know us all a little better. Many of you may be surprised there are so many of us here at The PI. When you come in for a visit, you see Gloria at the reception desk, Angie in the Clinic, and then a nurse, your physician, and other clinic staff. Behind the scenes though, are the people who work in the labs and study how and why Parkinson’s disease develops. Still others are busy processing your insurance and making our computers work, and ensuring that our Clinic and laboratories are clean, safe, and functional. Each one of us is Robert Howells Treasurer Who We Are Catherine K. Boshaw Secretary The staff at The Parkinson’s Institute is curious, eclectic, smart, dedicated, and kind—an all-around great group of folks. They are more than just a list of names. They are husbands, wives, partners, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters; they are scientists, social workers, doctors, nurses, and business people. They are fans of the Giants and the As; they love the Sharks, the Bears, ride a Harley or two, sail on San Francisco Bay, and relish the Big Game rivalry between Stanford and Cal. Some went to local schools, and some graduated from colleges and universities all around the world. There are 11 languages—besides English— spoken by staff at The PI, including Dutch, German, Hindi, Mandarin, Tamil and Tagalog. Let us tell you a little something more about them. We want to share these facts without names first, and then challenge you to figure out “who is who” during your next visit to The Institute! Thomas E. Bailard Board Member Deborah W. Brooks Board Member Susan J. Foster Board Member J. William Langston, M.D. CEO, Board Member Vernon Norviel Board Member 2 driven by the goal to find a cure—often because PD has affected our families and friends. Every single one of us—no matter what our specific job is—strives to prevent PD in future generations and to make sure your care and treatment is better here than any other place in the world. The last few years have been tough on this Institute and many other not-for-profit organizations. We have made adjustments; we are a leaner organization and are continuously working to apply donations in the most effective way to treat and combat this disease. All of us are confident in our work and what we do to help patients with PD. Every day, the staff and I work because PD does not care what Wall Street does, or what day of the week it is, or even what the weather is. We know you are fighting a battle with PD every single day and our desire to help you remains constant as well. I am proud to introduce to you—the patients and friends of The PI—the dedicated and talented people who work here. I am proud to be here, and honored to serve you. So please be sure to read “Who We Are” below. I think you will learn some fascinating facts about the People of The Institute. 1. LIFT YOUR SPIRITS Exercise is Good Medicine How many times have you heard it—exercise is crucial for taking care of you and your Parkinson’s disease (PD). Daily exercise is like an extra dose of medicine. Go ahead and make even a short walk part of your routine! Your neighborhood is probably a great place for a walk; the weather is great—what is keeping you from your daily dose of medicine? Gait and Balance participant taps to the beat. “I want to do as much as I can for as long as I can.” —Patricia 4 Exercise does not require fancy clothes or shoes—though a good slip-proof pair of walking shoes is a big help! Do your stretches inside against a wall or outside using a fence post for support, and then step forward taking long strides. To make that first step strong, begin by doing a weight shift from side to side. The idea is to load one side and then step with the other. Remember to relax both arms and let them swing freely. Put your walking stride all together: shift, step, swing. Students of Gait and Balance classes at The Parkinson’s Institute (The PI) practice this kind of movement analysis in fun and functional weekly sessions. The classes are taught by The Institute’s physical therapist, Marilyn Basham. The Class is designed to meet the needs of PD patients by focusing on managing the challenges of movement disorders. By training through specific limitations, each patient acquires healthy movement habits and learns strategies that can support his or her exercise program every day. For example, to lengthen your stride or sequence a step, you might practice to the beat of Dixieland Jazz or other music with a clear, metronomic beat. Remember the metronome, that little device on the piano that helped keep you in time with the clicks? It is a great tool for keeping you walking in pace too! The audio cues seem to focus attention better than visual cues. You can download music to your iPod to help you keep in step and moving! Remember: Exercise is medicine, and walking improves brain health while strengthening muscles and the entire cardiovascular system. The benefits of exercise are free, and an early -morning or late-afternoon walk in the sunshine provides a natural dose of Vitamin D as well. Avoid walking in the heat of the day, but get out and lift your spirits with a shift, step and swing! W h at ’ s a b e tt e r g i f t t h a n yo u R T I M E ? Volunteer: Give the Gift of Yourself! Very few gifts are as great as the gift of your time and talent. Volunteering is a great way to do more and to be part of the revolution that is helping Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. If you would like to do more, The Parkinson’s Institute (The PI) would love to have you as a volunteer! There are dozens of small and large jobs in and around The Institute, and we could use your helping hands. Imagine yourself: n Helping the Clinic arrange paperwork for new patients n Signing in guests at an Education Workshop Addressing envelopes in the Development Department n n Keeping the cookie jar full for Gloria Learning to master a new software program at The PI n Participating in dozens of other interesting projects—extra points if you are computer savvy! n If you can give a bit of yourself, you will make a difference in the life of someone with Parkinson’s disease, so please give Lauren Zachry, Development Officer, a call or send an email to get details. Lauren can be reached at (408) 452-5636 or [email protected]. Thank you! The gifts of your time and talent are needed and wanted at The Parkinson’s Institute. Volunteers who Matter: Summer Issue We want to thank the following people, who are volunteers this summer: Aaron Gerston, student at Chapman University and Freya Sampson, student from Northeastern University n Sonya Chalaka, Emily Chu, Ila Dwivedi, Indu Senni and Pranav Sharma, students from The Harker School in San Jose n Jackie Cisco, of Palo Alto, who has been an invaluable asset in the Development Department for the past two years n Doris, Mae Ella, Dee, Greta, Lil and Audrey of The Parkinson’s Auxiliary, who have helped Gloria at the Front Desk, operated the gift shop and assisted in the Development Department for a combined total of 60 years! n Cr u mb s f rom the Cooki e JaR By Gloria Goldstein Roll out the BBQ!! Let’s entertain! Barbequing is one of my favorite Labor Day memories. There are 4 steps to the perfect summer barbeque: 1. Sweet corn and hot melted butter for dipping! 2. Watermelon scooped out and then filled with a variety of summer melons and berries. 3. Creamy potato salad rHa ker School Students Aaron and Freya Left: Dr. Gayatri Pal works with student volunteers from The Harker School. Right: Aaron Gerston and Freya Sampson. 4. For the last hurrah of one summer, we crossed our fingers and decided to BBQ a TURKEY in our Weber! We had lots of burgers for those traditionalists, too! The turkey’s aroma was great, it looked fantastic, and it tasted soooo good. It was such a successful BBQ, that one guest barbequed a bird on Thanksgiving Day as well! Have a wonderful summer! Enjoy the sunshine and all the 5 gifts each day brings. Every Gift Counts! And so we count every gift in this, our annual listing of every donor from the previous year. Each and every gift makes a difference at The Parkinson’s Institute—no matter how small or how large—each gift is a crucial piece of the puzzle that allows The Institute to continue to provide world class care, discover the causes and one day, the cure for Parkinson’s disease. We offer this list without attributing gift value because well, every gift counts. For us, it is not the size of the gift, but the size of the heart of the gift giver. Our deepest appreciation to each and every person listed below. We believe you made the very best gift you could. Thank you for counting and thank you for making a gift—it counts! 7 Every Gift Counts Ordinary People and Extraordinary Gifts Unity Walk 2011 Walking in the Rain for the Ones We Love could have been theme of this year’s Unity Walk in New York City. The 17th Annual Parkinson’s Unity Walk, held in Central Park on April 16, 2011, was cold, rainy, and windy! Braving the numbing 42-degree weather, the 10,000 participants raised over $1.3 million for Parkinson’s disease research. The Parkinson’s Institute is the only California-based Parkinson’s organization of the seven major groups that receive funding from this event. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to each and every single person who walked, donated, and otherwise helped make this Unity Walk a huge success. We think this little girl cheering on family members at this year’s Walk sums up our sentiments exactly! 8 Cindy DeLuz, artist extraordinaire, and allaround amazing patient at The Parkinson’s Institute, has once again worked her magic with the creation of Starfire, a beach-cruiser bicycle she has hand-painted and raffled off to raise funds for our cause. The bike is fun and beautiful, capturing Cindy’s spirit and her joy in life. Thanks to you, Cindy! ‘Starfire’ hand-painted by Cindy DeLuz. Students at the Ronald C. Wornick Jewish Day School in Foster City raised over $1,200 for The Institute as part of their Tzedakah Project. They were inspired by one young student whose grandfather has Parkinson’s disease. Tzedakah—meaning righteousness—is doing the right thing. The students also raised funds for charities near and far, including those in Israel. All of us at The Parkinson’s Institute say to the 7th graders at the Ronald Wornick School— toda. (Hebrew for thank you!) and all of the scientists, physicians, and others who strive to help her son in his fight against Parkinson’s disease. In the Fall issue of our newsletter, you will read the full story about her remarkable giving and a mother’s love for her son. We cannot wait to tell you! “She really is remarkable”—that is the sentiment shared again and again about Donna Kos, who is the driving force behind Sunnyvale’s own Unity Walk held on May 14, 2011. Although not as large as the Unity Walk in New York City, what it lacks in size is made up for in enthusiasm and spirit. Many thanks for to Donna for her work over the past 8 years. Funds raised locally are sent to the national walk and distributed according to their guidelines—and yes, The Parkinson’s Institute receives a share. To all the volunteers, to each walker and to every donor—thank you! Everything you do really does make a difference. Young-onset patient, Katherine, sells Parkinson’s Institute bracelets at her support group meetings to raise for The Institute. Since 2008 she has raised nearly $600. Thank you Katherine, you are the best! With a bit of imagination, many patients, donors, and friends of The Parkinson’s Institute have been able to give wonderful gifts that support our cause, our care, and the hope for a cure. Every gift counts at The Parkinson’s Institute. We hope these stories about our donors inspire you to see how you can be part of our work and, ultimately, the cause, the care and the cure for Parkinson’s disease. care Rita Reager is a donor without peer at The Parkinson’s Institute. Every month for 24 years, she has made a regular donation to support the work of Dr. Langston W O R K I NG O N T HE CU R E Making the Connection: Stem Cell Awareness We all need a little help connecting the dots between our lives and Parkinson’s disease research, and our very own, Birgitt Schüle, MD, did just that! She brought her ground-breaking research to life and discussed how she and others in her lab are able to create stem cells and dopamine neurons from non-invasive skin biopsies taken from patients and family members. The Stem Cell Patient Advocacy and Stem Cell Update on Neurodegenerative Diseases was hosted by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) at University of California, Irvine. “This is an exciting scientific era—giving us new techniques to make a difference in every patient’s life.” —Dr. Schüle MAKING a tribute gift What is the difference between a memorial gift and an honor gift? A memorial gift is made in memory of someone who has passed away, generally in lieu of giving flowers. An honor gift is made to commemorate a life achievement or provide recognition for someone who is still living. What do I need to send for a tribute gift? Please send a small note with your donation stating who the donation is in memory or in honor of that includes a name and address for the person who will receive the acknowledgment. We will send a card telling your honoree or a family member of the person you are recognizing that a donation was made in their name and that you sent the donation. Please note: Your donation amount will not be disclosed. If you have any questions about this process, please contact Lauren Zachry at (408) 542-5636 or [email protected]. 9 Rx: Vacations—Take as Often as Needed continued from page 1 PLAN: Even though your THOUGHTFUL mind-set has protected you from upset over the unexpected, creating a PLAN can help smooth the path to relaxing travel. Summer 2011 Plan how much time you need to put aside each day to meditate, do breathing exercises, and practice imaging and muscle relaxation techniques—pencil time in for these as part of your daily schedule. Relaxing in the po Plan how much time you need for eating, resting, bathroom breaks, and taking medication. ol! Plan for who your human resources are—your spouse, travel companions (and be open to help from other kind people you have yet to meet!). Ask your physician and insurance company for recommendations about ways to handle emergencies. Let your travel agent alert the cruise company and/or airline to any special needs you have. Few of us want to ask for assistance, yet so many people are happy to help if we only let them know how to do so. FUN! Plan for fixed arrival/departure times and time zone changes and do your best to allow enough time for rest, so your body can catch up to a new clock. Seeing the Eiffel Tower when your body thinks its 3 am may not create the memory you had hoped! Plan on having the contact information (phone and email) for your travel agent, credit card company, and physician so that you can always have your own team ready to assist you in smoothing out any bumps in the road. PLAN to enjoy every little bit of your journey and experience! PREPARATION Now that you have THOUGHTFULLY created the right mind-set and formed a game PLAN for taking on both the known and unknown, please make some very tangible PREPARATIONS. 10 Cp il boa ad rdPageNumber Prescriptions—Fill all your prescriptions, pack them in their original bottles, and do not put them in any checked luggage, making sure to keep them with you at all times. Keep a printed list of your medications, dosages, and the scheduled time you take them in your wallet or purse. If you take your medications on a signal from your watch, smart phone, or other alarm, make plans for the time change. Ask your doctor to write prescriptions you can carry with you in case you lose any of your medications. Inquire about, and make arrangements for, wheelchairs or walkers/canes if there is the slightest possibility you may need them. Food & Water—Take a hands-free fanny pack to wear, so you can always carry snacks. Bring water with you—always! Do not overindulge— tonight’s buffet will be just as plentiful tomorrow. The first glass of wine is great; the second bottle may give you unpleasant consequences the next day. A second dessert—why not? You are on vacation! PAMPERING There are two schools of thought on the relative merits and drawbacks to vacation and travel in general. The curmudgeonly school holds that the best part of any vacation is getting back home to your own bed. We prefer the idea that vacations are about PAMPERING yourself all days, all the time. Pamper yourself by asking a travel agent to handle all of your arrangements: these professionals know the “ins and outs,” the good, the bad, and the ugly! They can help you avoid rip-offs, and they can often get you better prices than you can find on your own. It is fun to have your own concierge! Pamper yourself by finding out how much extra upgrades cost and consider first or business class travel instead of coach, reserving airport shuttle transportation, a tour guide, or upgrading your room. In addition, be aware that there are now services that ship luggage ahead for you, so that your things are unpacked before you even arrive! It never hurts to ask—or have your travel representative inquire. Pamper yourself by making sure you bring along a few personal items like books, puzzles, and your favorite music. Pamper yourself by being sure your return to “home sweet home” is one that includes continued on page 11 T h e P arki n s o n ’ s I n s tit u t e a n d Cli n i c al c e n t e r Together for One Purpose As we study Parkinson’s disease (PD)—the causes and the cure—we learn more and more about the “iceberg” that is PD. This ensures your return is, indeed, the personification of the idea that, “the best part of any vacation is getting back home to my own bed.” OTHER THINGS TO DO Do use the “Rule of Thirds”— whatever you hope to do on any given vacation day, reduce plans by a third, so you aren’t too worn out after that day to enjoy the days that will follow. Do inquire about and try to secure ground-floor accommodations and easy access to elevators. Do feel free to request that attendants and guides schedule adequate rest and stretch breaks. Do ask for what you need and want. You have earned the right! Do reserve time for both professional and self-massage to smooth away the tensions and stresses that come with unfamiliar surroundings and a different time clock. Do not forget to smile!
