Canadians once looked to cremation as a way to address the environmental concerns associated with death, and its popularity has skyrocketed in recent years. But the growing popularity of cremation and concerns about the tons of emissions that are spewed out as a result have spawned a newer, cleaner option: Natural or green burials. Green burials have been fairly common in the United Kingdom for more than a decade, and are growing in popularity in the United States, but the idea is now just coming to Canada. After three years of study, the owners of the Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria decided to dedicate an area of its land to green funerals and will offer the services starting in October. A green funeral typically means the body is not subjected to chemical embalming, there are no oversized, ornate caskets made of expensive wood and metal, no grave liners or protective vaults are used, there are no fancy headstones on the grounds, and no toxic emissions are released. The Natural Burial Co-operative is trying to take the idea a step further in Paisley, Ont., a village about 200 kilometres northwest of Toronto, by starting a burial site that will solely focus on green funerals and resemble a conservation area more than a cemetery. Trees would be planted at grave sites and people could pay their respects to loved ones in a serene, green environment, rather than being surrounded by rows of gloomy tombstones, said president Mike Salisbury. — THE CANADIAN PRESS 10 HORRIBLE COINCIDENCE Alleged drunk driver kills wife in head-on crash THE 9, 995 NEW CAR IS HERE! $ BRAND NEW THE 2008 ACCENT 69 $ /BW 41 AUTO MALL ROAD SHERWOOD PARK www.sphyundai.com Price is plus freight, PDI, and block heater. Family and fans greeted Brown outside Rikers Island on Friday as she was released from the jail after serving an eight-month sentence. Brown said the first place she wanted to go was to church, declaring that “I’ve got to get on my knees.” Instead, Brown went shopping in Harlem, had some soul food and was driven to her childhood home in Brooklyn in a white Rolls Royce Phantom. Her mother, Judith Marchand, presented her with smiley-face balloons and the two hugged outside the family’s home in the Prospect Heights neighbourhood. A VH1 crew captured the reunion for an upcoming reality show. SPLIT REPORTS DISMISSED According to sources, Britney Spears is returning to “How I Met Your Mother,” reports People.com. “The show is ecstatic and so is Britney,” a source said. “She had so much fun the first time around she really wanted to come back. It was a mutual decision to work together more.” The singer/actress will do one episode, the source says. Fox studios would not confirm the appearance. Spears, 26, appeared on the March 24 episode, playing a receptionist at a dermatologist’s office who fell for one of the show’s main characters, played by Josh Radnor. She received wide accolades for the spot. — 24 hours news services DRUNK DRIVER HITS BULLOCK Sandra Bullock and her husband were unhurt after a head-on crash with a drunken driver, police said Saturday. The actress and her husband, Jesse James of TV’s “Monster Garage,” were being driven in a sportutility vehicle Friday night when a station wagon crossed the centre line and hit them, said Gloucester police Lt. Jerry Cook. Both vehicles were totalled, but no one was hurt. The vehicles were travelling 15 to 20 mph, Cook said. The other car was driven by Lucille Gatchell, who registered a bloodalcohol level of 0.20 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, Cook said. She was held by Gloucester police overnight and released Saturday on personal recognizance. She is to be arraigned tomorrow in Gloucester District Court. Gatchell did not immediately return a call seeking comment Saturday. Calls to representatives for Bullock were not immediately returned. Bullock, 43, was “gracious” and concerned about whether Gatchell was OK, Cook said. The actress is in Massachusetts filming the romantic comedy “The Proposal.” — The Associated Press Aides close to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have dismissed reports that the couple is planning a trial separation as “absolutely false,” reports imdb.com. An article in the new issue of magazine In Touch declares Holmes plans to move to Manhattan from Los Angeles with the couple’s daughter Suri. The exclusive story, which graces the front page of the publication, leads with the headline,“Katie wants her life back.” But her representative insists all talk of a broken marriage and an unhappy Holmes is ridiculous.A spokeswoman says,“She and her husband enjoy a close and loving relationship.”According to the In Touch article, Holmes plans to move to Manhattan with her daughter to pursue her Broadway acting ambitions. — 24 hours news services SOCCER CLUB IN THE WORKS? David Beckham could be looking into purchasing a soccer club with his superstar pal Tom Cruise, a source told U.K.’s Daily Express. “David has often spoken of his desire to concentrate on his youth football academies, rather than a career in management when he retires from the game,” the source told the newspaper.“Perhaps a highprofile soccer venture with a Hollywood superstar would also give him back some of the credibility he surely feels he lost after fleeing prestigious Real Madrid for a megabucks deal in the U.S.” — 24 hours news services — The Associated Press . . Edmonton Catholic Schools has issued a weather advisory for parents due to the cold, snowy weather. Yellow school buses will be running on all 176 routes this morning but could be delayed due to traffic and weather conditions. The school district reminds parents to dress their children in warm hats, gloves and boots in case they have to wait longer for the bus. If the bus doesn't show up within 20 minutes of its scheduled time, children should either return home or to a pre-selected location. BUDGET briefs city news WEATHER Will Tories be back in business? Alberta’s new finance minister delivers her first budget tomorrow amid marketplace concerns the province is abandoning its longstanding pledge to stay out of the business of business. Iris Evans declined to give a preview of broad strokes or themes. But in last week’s Throne Speech — a blueprint of government plans and priorities — Premier Ed Stelmach’s Tory government promised initiatives to ensure the economy prospers over the long term and distance itself from the peaks and valleys of the volatile global oil and gas market. There will be a new enterprise GINGRAS fund to attract venture capital, a new tax credit for scientific research and plans to boost the agriculture and forestry industries. The government will create a think tank to advise the premier on the best way to keep the economy vibrant over the next decades. “The concern we have with all governments is when they’re trying to quote-unquote ‘diversify the economy,’ that’s a buzzword for intervention which never, never works,” said Scott Hennig of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “It’s a slippery slope.” — THE CANADIAN PRESS Missing woman Police are on the lookout for a 49year-old Edmonton woman missing since last month. Jeannie Gingras was last seen March 21 at the Edmonton People in Need Shelter Society at 95 Street and 103 Avenue. Police say she has a mental illness and could harm herself if she goes without medication. Gingras is five-foot-five, 145 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She usually wears her clothes in layers. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call police at 423-4567. CRIME Angels’ head slams citizens Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa is slamming the public’s “mind your own business” attitude in the wake of the broad daylight slaying of a 77-year-old man. Sliwa made the comments yesterday at the grand opening of the Edmonton chapter of his controversial volunteer crime-busting group, which now has six Edmonton members and more than 5,000 worldwide. Sliwa asked why no one intervened when Hans Alberts was fatally stabbed last week in a westend parking lot after enjoying an anniversary dinner with wife Adelaide. Witnesses said Adelaide tried to fight off her husband’s attacker with her purse. “We have to believe that at the time of day ... there were grown BRENDON DLOUHY, Sun Media SNOW PATROL: Members of the Edmonton chapter of the Guardian Angels carry out their first official patrol through the snow at the Jasper Gates Centre at Stony Plain Road and 149 Street yesterday afternoon. men more than capable of physically intervening — if not making noise, distracting the individual,” said Sliwa. He said there is too much of a “M.Y.O.B.” (mind your own business) mindset in Edmonton and the world. Had a team of Guardian Angels been at the scene at 150 Street and Stony Plain Road that day, Sliwa said he would have expected them to stop the attack, get a description of the suspect, talk to witnesses and help cops make an arrest. “I would have expected them to do more than call the police.” Several eyewitnesses to last Wednesday’s slaying did rush to the aid of Alberts and his wife, though too late to save the victim, who suffered multiple stab wounds. One man took off his T-shirt and gave it to a woman performing CPR on Alberts as he lay bleeding profusely on the ground. Yesterday’s grand opening saw two more graduates join Edmonton’s Guardian Angels, known for their red berets and sateen jackets. Edmonton’s six members are counted among 5,000 members worldwide. James Harrold, 22, who received his graduation certificate yesterday along with Mike Mrochuk, plans to use his volunteer experience with the Guardian Angels toward becoming an Edmonton police officer. Guardian Angels “are a huge deterrent,” said Harrold, who is currently an armoured guard from the Clareview area. “It’s a step in the right direction.” — Kristy Brownlee, 24 hours Facebook clues KRISTY BROWNLEE, 24 hours MODEL CITIZEN: Natasha Chiam, an exhibitor at the chilly Earth Day Festival in Hawrelak Park yesterday, cares for her colleague’s six-month-old daughter, Amber Whiting. Earth Day chilled It was a quiet day at the lemonade stand during Edmonton’s Earth Day Festival yesterday. A small crowd of Edmontonians braved Old Man Winter’s encore for Earth Day at Hawrelak Park, probably wishing there was hot chocolate instead of the icecold citrus beverage. The 18th annual event was downsized to put about 40 eco-exhibitors, bands and attendees under a single tent to block the whipping wind and blowing snow. Janice Boudreau, head co-ordinator, was positive about Mother Nature’s gift of flurries. “It’s not how many come, it’s who does come. There’s no reason for anybody to not dress up and come down and celebrate.” Among the exhibitors, naturalurbanmamas.com, an online clothing store and resource centre, brought its colourful organic baby clothing, accessories and glass baby bottles. “I think it’s important to support sustainability for other women and countries around the world,” said Natasha Chiam, coowner, who was bundled up in a fuzzy poncho and tuque. “We do support a lot of women and moms who are trying to make a living.” The weekend saw both Edmonton and Calgary shivering under temperatures in the minus-10 C range, with winds gusting 35- to 50-km/h, driving the temperature as low as -22 C. By yesterday afternoon, between nine and 15 centimetres of snow had piled up in the province’s two main cities. RCMP were advising people to stay off virtually all Alberta’s main highways, reporting nearwhiteout conditions on some and ice, high winds and drifting snow on the others. — Kristy Brownlee, 24 hours, with files from THE CANADIAN PRESS An Edmonton man charged in the shocking daylight murder of a 77year-old man posed a series of ominous messages on his Facebook page in the days and weeks leading up to the fatal stabbing. Haldane Alexander Jensen-Huot, 23, is charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of Hans Alberts. Alberts was attacked and killed in a parking lot at 150 Street and Stony Plain Road last Wednesday afternoon in front of his wife and other horrified onlookers. Status updates Jensen-Huot appears to have posted on his Facebook page include that he “would feel sorta bad about hurting innocent people.”That post was made last Tuesday at 10:46 p.m. Jensen-Huot was arrested in Regina on Friday. Murder case Mounties in a remote region of northern Alberta have launched a murder investigation in the death of a 53-year-old man. Details were sketchy but Assumption RCMP say they were alerted to a suspicious death Saturday on the Dene Tha First Nation, about 900 kilometres northwest of Edmonton. RCMP have charged Ralley Edward Pastion, 38, with second-degree murder in the slaying of Joseph Pastion, 53. Ralley Pastion is also charged with attempted murder of a woman. . 6 . | CANADA 24 hours • Monday, April 21, 2008 briefs need to know national news CSIS in the dark Canada’s spy agency has been forced to junk its approach to terrorist financing as clandestine groups here and abroad learn to skirt the law-enforcement initiatives set up after Sept. 11, 2001. Intelligence assessments suggest Canadian authorities have been operating in the dark when it comes to tracking funds earmarked for terrorism. The country’s ability to trace money for terrorism was taken to task recently by the Financial Action Task Force, an international body. Defending language The Canadian Coast Guard will be hauled before a House of Commons committee to defend its ability to deliver services in both official languages. Liberal MP Denis Coderre says the recent deaths of four Quebec sealers have raised questions about how the coast guard handles distress calls in French. GAY BOOKSTORE HAS HAD ENOUGH EXTINCTION WORRY They’ve been bombed three times, received death threats and stood before the red-robed justices of the Supreme Court of Canada. No, Jim Deva and Bruce Smyth are not killers or terrorists. The soft-spoken Vancouver men sell books. And in some peoples’ eyes, Deva says, that made the gay owners of Little Sister’s Book & Art Emporium dangerous. After 23 years of fighting Canada Customs’ seizures of books bound for the gay and lesbian bookshop, the partners have put Little Sister’s up for sale. A conservation group is calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to quickly act to prevent regional extinctions of polar bears. The call from WWF Canada comes as the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada plans to deliver its recommendations to the federal government on Friday. Dr. Peter Ewins says there is rapidly mounting evidence that polar bear populations are in crisis as a result of sea-ice habitat loss, over-hunting and industrial development pressures. ENVIRONMENT GUN REGISTRY Tories targeted over cash The federal Conservatives, who once denounced Liberal cost overruns at the national gun registry, have been passing up more potential revenue from gun owners than they’ve spent to run the registry since they took power. “This government, if it ran the registry appropriately and did not waive the fees, in fact would be making a profit.” More Rimbey charges Ujjal Dosanjh, Public safety critic RCMP have charged a second woman after a man’s body was found in a burning vehicle southwest of Edmonton. Firefighters found the remains of Hugh Frank Oswald, 57, of no fixed address last Friday northwest of Rimbey in a burning car on an oil lease road. Police said Saturday they have charged Carlea Wetheral, 38, of no fixed address, with murder, indignity to a human body and arson to a motor vehicle. She is in custody and is scheduled to appear in Red Deer court today. RCMP statistics list actual and projected operating costs for gun registration programs at $35.9 million over three fiscal years starting in 2006. During the same period, under Children linked to B.C.? B.C. Morman polygamist leader Winston Blackmore says the people of Bountiful are praying for the children in Texas being held in custody by U.S. authorities. He says he doesn’t know if any are from his commune, located near Creston in B.C.’s Kootenay region. More than 400 children apprehended April 3 at the Morman sect’s Texas enclave may be subject to genetic testing to sort out family relationships. B.C. Attorney General Wally Oppal has said federal government officials told him at least 15 Canadian children in Texas are likely linked to Bountiful. The Mounties maintain that registration and licensing are different procedures, with separate budget envelopes. They say licensing income shouldn’t be viewed as offsetting the administrative costs of registration. Opposition MPs reject that interpretation and say the figures confirm what they’ve always believed — that Conservative policy has been driven by philosophical opposition to gun control, not by costsaving concerns. “This government, if it ran the Sun media file registry appropriately and did not waive the fees, in fact would be new policies instituted by Public making a profit,” said Ujjal DoSafety Minister Stockwell Day, the sanjh, the Liberal public safety critgovernment has refunded or is ic. waiving an estimated $56.5 million — THE CANADIAN PRESS in licensing fees from gun owners. Problem is, after nearly four months of primaries and caucuses in 46 states, territories and the District of Columbia, they still aren’t sure who that is, don’t seem be in any hurry to make up their minds and aren’t interested in any artificial process that might force them to choose between Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Pope blesses Ground Zero Pope Benedict began the final day of his American journey by blessing the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and pleading with God to bring “peace to our violent world.” The visit by Benedict to Ground Zero was a poignant moment in a trip marked by unexpectedly festive crowds anxious to see the former academic who for three years has led the world’s Roman Catholics. He knelt in silent prayer for a few moments, then rose to light a memorial candle. Addressing a group that included survivors, clergy and public officials, he acknowledged the many faiths of the victims at the “scene of incredible violence and pain.” The Pope also prayed for “those who suffered death, injury and loss” in the attacks at the Pentagon and in the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pa. More than 2,900 people were killed in the four crashes of the airliners hijacked by al-Qaida. “God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world,” the Pope prayed on a chilly, overcast morning. “Turn to your way of love those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred.” — The Associated Press AP BLESS THIS GROUND: Pope Benedict XVI blesses the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, in New York yesterday. However, the runup has some analysts worried that investors are getting the impression that the allclear has somehow sounded and that markets are poised to resume racking up strong gains. “I think Canada is going to be plagued by this kind of whipsawing effect that we have been seeing for a while,” observed Andrew Pyle, investment adviser for Scotia McLeod in Peterborough, Ont. “We do get these nice little moves especially when oil hits record INTEREST RATES Cut expected Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney is expected to cut interest rates by half-a-percentage point tomorrow not because he has to, but because he can. Talk of recession has subsided in Canada and the bank’s overnight rate is already a toothless 3.5 per cent, helping to keep consumer demand reasonably robust. Yet when the newly minted bank governor looks at the other side of the teeter-totter he must strive to keep on balance, he must wonder at his good fortune that the current global inflation bogeyman seems to have given Canada a miss. Prices are rising by about eight per cent annually in China, four per cent in the U.S. and 3.6 per cent in Europe. In Canada, not so much. In fact, last week’s Statistics Canada report saw the country’s overall inflation dip for the fourth straight month to 1.4 per cent for March, hardly the stuff to induce palpitations even in an excitable central banker. — THE CANADIAN PRESS Analysts urge caution highs, but you know inevitably when we get an economic or fundamental report out that suggests things are weakening or global growth is slowing down, then commodities come right back down again and drag the TSX lower.” The market closed Friday about 17 per cent above the recent lows hit in late January. Helping push the market higher were oil prices that hit a fresh record high of US$116.69 a barrel on Friday. But agricultural stocks have also contributed to the latest gains, reflecting a sizable advance in the socalled soft commodities like wheat. Potash Corp. (TSX:POT) surged 10.7 per cent last week alone. — THE CANADIAN PRESS JAGUAR LAND ROVER CEO dies at 60 after battle with illness Sun media file BORROWING COSTS: Recession talk in this country has mellowed as Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney is expected to cut interest rates by half a percentage point tomorrow. Previously it was believed to be made only in the brain. If, as scientists suspect, neuropeptide from belly fat makes it into the blood stream and the brain, it could explain why some people get fatter and fatter. Whether you do presses or pushups before this move, keep the weight load light since it’s performed one arm at a time. Secure a pulley handle attachment on the lowest rung of a cable apparatus. Next, stand with left side in front of weight stack, bend knees to reach right hand across to take an under- hand grip of cable handle resting on the floor and stand upright. Place left hand on left hip with right arm straight. Now slowly raise right arm with palm facing down. This action brings the cable across the body making arm parallel to the floor. After all, I don’t consider myself a TV junkie by any means, so how hard could it be? Enter my discovery that the formerly-titled TV Turnoff Week has been renamed Mental Detox Week, meaning I also have to abstain from my laptop, IPod and anything with a screen. Confidence shattered. My skepticism sounds silly because I grew up in rural Alberta with nothing but the outdoors and my own imagination to keep me entertained. To this day, I don’t have access to cable or satellite television at home and I just stepped into the Apple world last Christmas when my sister brought me out of the luddite age of CDs by giving me an IPod. But even so, I’m already realizing just how much I rely on electronics for entertainment. As if timing was destined to work against me, the soccer team I play for on Mondays happens to be taking a weekly break between seasons tonight, so I am already without plans. Hence my first test of will — going back to my childhood days to brainstorm activities that don’t require a keyboard, remote control or set of earphones. — 24 hours reporter Jenna McMurray is writing a daily diary to journal her attempts at shunning TV and all other technologial distractions during Mental Detox Week Check out today’s for more entertainment ͕ MONDAY PRIMETIME ABC YTV NW FOX TREE CMT E! The future Hall of Famer left the team shortly afterwards without speaking to reporters, an abrupt end to his brief stay with the Blue Jays. “Our best opportunity is to put other guys in the lineup at this point,” general manager J.P. In order to let him go forward and get on with his career, I think it’s fair to do it at this point.” Thomas said Saturday “it’s pretty obvious” that his benching was due to his contract instead of a lack of production. The 19year veteran has a vesting option worth US$10 million in 2009 and needs 304 more plate appearances for it to become guaranteed. The Blue Jays must pay his full salary this season. “That never came up,” Ricciardi said of the vesting option. “I told Frank our decision is based on performance and his decision is based on not being able to be in the lineup.” Manager John Gibbons told Thomas that DIVISION OF THE EDMONTON SUN E EDMONTON SUN he wouldn’t be guaranteed at-bats during a Saturday morning meeting. The situation wasn’t allowed to fester, something centre-fielder Vernon Wells said was probably a good thing. “I think it’s better for him, too,” said Wells. “He gets a chance to have more time to possibly pick up with another team, with us it may give some of younger guys a chance to come up. — THE CANADIAN PRESS . . and Skilled Help 0100 Help Wanted 0100 Help Wanted 0100 Help Wanted 0101 Trades Employment 0100 Help Wanted 1 P/T & 1 F/T FLOOR SUPERVISOR: GREAT WAGES.
