DEADLINE FOR SUMMER NEWSLETTER IS JULY 15, 2015, PLEASE HAVE YOUR INFO TO ME BY THAT DATE. THIS IS CRITICAL!!! Rita Stout, Administrator - [email protected], 502432-3250 or 502-326-9256 Rev3.5/2/15 Hello Art Friends. I have a challenge for you. At one time or another we have all been asked to donate our work. This is different. I want you to consider auctioning a piece of your artwork and donating the proceeds to KWS. This idea just occurred to me so I haven’t fully flushed it out yet. I’m going to do this soon and I haven’t decided whether to auction it on Facebook or maybe an online auction site like Etsy. If you aren’t comfortable with auctioning then you could send it to the gallery and we will sell it for you. Just include your contact info in case we have questions. For everyone who does this we will be glad to put a picture of your auctioned piece and your name and contact info, if you want, on our WebSite. (soon as I clear it with the Board!). Here are some tips from an article I just found online, www.artbusiness.com: Donate a good piece of art. Don't donate the worst, least significant, or most outdated piece you have lying around your studio. You want your donation to reflect positively on the quality and type of art that you currently produce. Set the minimum acceptable opening bid at reasonable levels (If it is a small painting I’m just going to start mine at $1. After all it is just a little piece of paper with a little paint on it! If you're a good artist and people know it, your art will be bid up to a reasonable no matter how low you set the opening bid. Be aware that insisting on too high a selling price may show that you're more concerned about how much your art is worth than you are about the fundraising efforts. Your reward in addition to getting in the newsletter will be our undying gratitude and the satisfaction that comes from helping an organization that promotes what you love. The future and success of KWS depends on all members, their interest and participation in its work. We hope our members will show more interest in Society work and take their places as Board members, chair person, volunteers and help shape or reshape it if needed. There is always a need for volunteers especially now with the Aqueous exhibit approaching. Aqueous is the show that gives us national prominence. We are proud of it and we should help it stay here. But how many of us ever agree to help when asked? Can we spare one or two days per month to help with mailing, telephone, deliveries or other activities when the Aqueous Director may need us to help?? Sue and the Aqueous committee desperately need our help. She and Rita will work with volunteers. Please call and volunteer your time. The future of Aqueous depends on our participation. My wish is to bring members closer by bringing interesting ideas and programs to our General meetings. If members become more involved and numerous at the meetings, we may decide to put them together more often. You will decide. Members should give ideas for programs and also help find speakers or guests to come and present interesting and relevant presentations. Some meetings can be designated as critique days. First we present our work for critique and after expending some time fixing critiqued work we can check on reworked paintings and reflect on our experiences. Please e-mail us with any program you would like to have introduced. This year's exhibition showcased 25 water media works from 20 artists which were selected from 50 entries by 23 local and regional artists. The Pat Harrison Art Center at the Arts Council of Southern Indiana in New Albany is the venue for the exhibition, which runs from March 14-April 18, 2015. AquaVenture 2015 is truly a regional show with representation from artists in Louisville, Bardstown, Shelbyville, Lexington, Richmond, Columbia and Glasgow, Kentucky as well as Floyds Knobs, Greenville, and Bloomington, Indiana. The juror for acceptance and awards was artist and curator John Begley, retired director of the Hite Art Institute Gallery of the University of Louisville, past president of the Louisville Visual Arts Association, and founding director of the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. Nine paintings received awards and to date one painting was sold during the exhibition. Special recognition goes to Preston Arts Center for sponsoring three awards this year. Actors Theatre of Louisville will host the exhibition from November 6 through December 13, 2015. Please plan to join us for the opening reception November 6, 2015 (5 PM – 10 PM at Actors Theater). Our Juror, Robert Burridge, is a full-time contemporary painter and teaches combined media, collage and paints and his painting course will cover the latest in avant-garde water media materials and techniques that Bob is currently doing. KWS can be proud that AQUEOUS USA is among the most prestigious watercolor events in the country. Many past participants are featured regularly in books and national publications. In order to encourage participation and recognize our outstanding artists, whose paintings are selected in such rigorous competition, KWS offers many awards. We would like to recognize the many volunteer activities and gifts of time that our members generously contribute each year. We also would like to ask you to become a sponsor and consider making a financial contribution in 2015. Sponsorship is a generous and important way that we, as artists and supporters of the arts, can encourage our fellow artists and keep Aqueous and KWS the professional and respected organization it has become over the years. Gifts in any amount are greatly appreciated; even $5-$10 can combine to make a big difference. Every contributor will receive a copy of the AQUEOUS USA 2014 show catalog in which he or she will be recognized as a sponsor (unless a desire to remain anonymous is indicated below). He holds an MFA in painting and drawing, and a Masters of Education in Art Education. He has taught watercolor, oil painting, drawing, and Chinese brush painting for many years in the USA and internationally. Li’s watercolors have won many national awards including the first place artist award in the Kentucky Watercolor Society’s Aqueous USA 2012 & the Kentucky Artist Award in Aqueous USA 2013. Non-members, $389.00 After April 15: Add $25.00 Frank Francese - July 27-30, 2015 Watercolor Workshop Frank Francese is a well- known watercolor artist and instructor. His liquid style is unique and distinctive. Frank enjoys working on a very wet surface, letting the pure color mix itself on the paper. His shapes are large and loose, often disregarding fine detail. Frank uses abrupt color changes of the same value with the white of the watercolor paper to bring his paintings to life. The subject matter for Francese watercolors is always varied, reflecting his national and international travels. About the Workshop: During our 4 day workshop Frank will demonstrate two times per day with plenty of time for working on the concepts presented. Day 1 will include nature scenes. The goal is for students to learn to apply the paint freely on the page and to start to understand how to use the white of the paper. Day 2 we will paint rustic scenes placing manmade structures in the natural landscape. The concepts of light source and shadowing will be introduced. City scenes are the focus of Day 3. Learning what to include in your painting and what to leave out is stressed here. On Day 4 we will paint beach scenes - boats and buildings in the tropics, the confusion of a harbor scene with fishing boats, working people or the quiet sea villages in any part of the world. Visit frank’s website at francese.com to see more about him and his beautiful paintings. KWS received a wonderful donation from several people plus her hair salon. Kentucky Living Magazine wrote the following quote: “Lynne Christenson, Kentucky Livings ad manager since 1998, died in February from cancer. Lynne brought a passion to the parts of her job especially making sure that advertisers delivered on any promises made to Kentucky Living readers. She was an innovative force, helping develop Kentucky Living’s Web site and social media.” She did a lot with our Plein Air painting group and was involved with KWS in various areas.
