One year ago I stood before you as the new Chair of the KWS. We had just
embarked on a year of significant transition as we began the search for a
new Executive Director and considered what we needed as an organization
to move to the next level artistically and organizationally. A difficult
process for any organization to undertake, we took on the challenge while
at the same time presenting an artistically and technically excellent 68th
Season.
Our first priority was to find the right leader for the KWS. Someone who
would be an agent of change. Someone who would understand our
evolving vision to inspire and unite our community through music.
Someone who would embody the spirit of the KWS within the community
and our supporters. And someone who had the fiscal experience and
acumen to help us right the ship financially. You can imagine the
daunting task this criteria created, but we were committed to finding that
person no matter how long it took. The process took one year but it’s been
worth the wait. I am delighted to announce that Andrew Bennett was
chosen as our successful candidate after an exhaustive search – and has
the unanimous endorsement of all members of our Search Committee.
Welcome Andrew!
One year without the leadership of an Executive Director placed strain on every corner of the organization. The
most difficult results for us to report are our financial results; we end the year facing an accumulated deficit
significantly greater than last season. Despite the enormous efforts of our staff and Transition Management Team
we missed some important revenue targets in earned revenue (sale of orchestra services to other organizations,
ticket revenue for Special Concerts and rental of the Conrad Centre). Going forward, we have two areas of focus.
First, we must adjust more quickly to the need for innovative new revenue sources as the performing arts market
changes and traditional revenue sources and concert experiences shift. Second, we must find a more compelling
way to communicate the value of the KWS’ artistic performance, education and community programs so that our
patrons and our community choose to invest in our concerts, programs and future. We have a great story to tell
and it’s our responsibility to tell it well. Happily, our new Executive Director is ready and able to take on these
challenges.
When the first signs of financial stress appeared in January, various expense reductions were implemented. The
orchestra and staff both made significant contributions to expense reduction for this year: the orchestra agreed to
phase in the increases of their contract over a 2 year period and staff salaries were frozen. We owe both groups
our thanks. We increased our fundraising initiatives and prepared a deficit reduction plan for the next 5 years.
This plan outlines new revenue streams and examines every aspect of our expenses and operations. The deficit
reduction plan reflects our goal to reduce the accumulated deficit from 17% of revenue to 5% of revenue or
approximately $120,000 increase net revenue per year. We will strive to achieve improved financial results, but
we need to do this in a way that does not damage the artistic integrity of the organization.
This year we also experienced the extraordinary resilience, steely commitment and faith of the KWS family. The
staff rallied, the orchestra rallied, our supporters and members rallied. There are many things to celebrate. Edwin
demonstrated his faith in the KWS by extending his contract until the end of the 2016/17 Season. We also
exceeded our fundraising goals, increased the number of subscriptions sold and worked hard to develop plans to
realize Edwin’s vision of the KWS as a 21st Century orchestra. We also built our relationship with our community
through new initiatives with health and wellness and education.
Our relationship with Centre in the Square moved forward this year with a strategic assessment of both
organizations undertaken with the support of the City of Kitchener. The results, which were published in August,

give us a foundation of information to help us plan how we will survive and thrive together. The assessment
identified some positive information about the KWS, including: a high level of activity relative to other orchestras of
the same size with minimal staff resources; we manage our expenses well; our partnerships with the community are
creative and extensive. Our challenges include building revenue and continuing to build our partnership with CITS,
one of the best performance halls in North America. Our ultimate goals are the same. We are committed to ensuring
that the strategic direction for both organizations can be realized to the mutual benefit of both.
As we embark on our new chapter under the leadership of Edwin and Andrew I want to take a moment to recognize
the work of our Music Director Edwin Outwater and our Transition Management Team: Laurie Castello, Chris Sharpe,
Jeanette Van Wyk, Kari Hueber and Amy Higgins. This group worked tirelessly above and beyond the call of duty,
often stretching outside their comfort level, expertise, and certainly outside normal working hours. They took on the
responsibility with professionalism, commitment and grace. The Board is so very grateful for their leadership this
year.
Sometimes it is hard to imagine how things can be different and better. I am certain that our members and
community who took that leap of faith in the past are ready to take that leap again.

Music Director Report
There were so many amazing things
that happened during the 2013/14
Season. It was a season of truly
vibrant and dynamic programming that
inspired, entertained and transported
audiences of all ages and cultural
backgrounds.
Both the Signature and Pops Series
had wonderful opening concerts. We
opened our Season with the amazing
Natalie MacMaster and a rousing
Celtic concert that was followed by a
memorable kitchen party at the
Conrad Centre for our annual gala.

After that we had one of the great
Canadian pianists, Anton Kuerti, return for a concert in which he played Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto – it was
such a pleasure to work with this great artist. That program also featured Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 and a new
work by Canadian composer Scott Good that was commissioned just for that concert.
One of my favourite parts of the season was our Paris Festival, part of the Signature Series. Our Friday and
Saturday night concerts, called From the Concert Hall to the Cabaret began with a traditional first half featuring
Saint-Saëns and pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, but the second half was a wild cabaret spectacular with costumed
characters, strange theatrical experiences and references to Dadaism and Satie. The Signature Series always has
surprises and that was one of the best!
Our Pops Series was full of music that everyone loves. John Williams and Steven Spielberg were featured in a
concert with Michael Krajewski, and our ABBA concert was the highest selling concert in recent memory. One of
our favourites, conductor John Morris Russell, returned at the end of the season with a concert of superheroes
music. I was able to attend that concert and it was lots of fun.
Intersections celebrated its five year anniversary with a concert both at the Conrad Centre in Kitchener and Koerner
Hall in Toronto. This very special program featured some of our greatest Intersections commissions and premieres
including the music of Nicole Lizée, Dan Deacon and a new work by composer Bryce Dessner. We also collaborated
closer to home with Queen Street Yoga founder Meaghan Johnson in a concert about music and the body. It was
amazing to see the audience doing
stretches and body movements and
meditations along to the music. Many
people told me it was one of the most
profound experiences they had all year –
getting past all of the mental blocks and
feeling the music directly. Intersections has
also been getting picked up around North
America – the Indianapolis Symphony
picked up our Quantum: Music at the
Frontier of Science, performing it in April
2014. I was so happy to take our music and
our creations down to another orchestra.
There is more to come; I think it’s so
special that we at the KWS create original
content that orchestras borrow!

Taking a bow at the Centre In The Square
The Baroque and Beyond Series is curated by members of the KWS. Each season, musicians submit proposals
and the four that work best for the season are chosen by their peers on the Artistic Advisory Committee. This
year it included programs by Ian Whitman, Nancy Wharton, Jim Mason and Allene Chomyn. This is one of the
musicians’ favourite series and now so many of them are involved in not only playing it, but creating the series.
That’s very important to me and I’m proud of the new direction that this series has taken.
Our Family Series continues to grow; we are reaching audiences of tomorrow by exposing them to music in new
and entertaining formats. We have one of the best Family Series programs, which is thanks to Evan Mitchell,
who shaped and hosted so many programs including this past season’s Peter and the Wolf and a fun and
entertaining collaboration with Toronto’s Opera 5. Evan always had wonderful and creative ideas that were
implemented as part of the Family Series.
Evan finished his three year term as KWS Assistant Conductor at the end of last season and was immediately
appointed Music Director of the Kingston Symphony. This is wonderful news – the KWS is here to groom young
Canadian conductors and move them on to greater opportunities. We are so proud of Evan and everything that he
has accomplished. Since Evan’s departure, we have appointed Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser as our new Assistant
Conductor and he is off to a great start; he will be another incredible member of the KWS family.
Every concert is an experience. It’s not just about the music to me; it’s about the experience when you walk in
the door or even before you arrive at the hall. At the KWS you may receive videos, program notes and podcasts
before you attend – as well as pre and post-concert chats, interviews and speaking from stage. It is my mission
to shape what the concert experience is in the 21st Century. During the KWS’ 2013/14 season we piloted a lot
of different projects and, as we move ahead, they will focus into a distinct experience that will be unlike any
other orchestra. I am so excited about
breathing new life into the way music is
Intersections Encore at the Conrad Centre
presented – getting people closer to the
music and closer to the orchestra.
It is such a pleasure to work with the KWS,
I am so proud of what we continue to
accomplish. We are all a big musical family
here in Waterloo Region, and I am so proud
to lead you forward in experiencing music
in wonderful ways.

Know Before You Go!
During the 2013/14 Season, audience members received an
even more robust offering of content through the Know Before
You Go emails throughout the season. Know Before You Go is
part of the KWS Entry Points initiative, which provides
additional fun and interesting information to engage audience
members. The Entry Points team is a cross-departmental team
that works to enhance patron experience and engage KWS
audiences in new and different ways.
The 2013/14 Season was another strong year for the Entry
Points team. We strengthened projects piloted last season while
Evan Mitchell leading a Prelude talk with tenor
piloting another new project; continuing to broaden the Know
Nicholas Phan and Ian Whitman
Before You Go experience offered to patrons. In our
Intersections and Signature Series we piloted a new project
called Soundsync; an interactive experience through which audience members receive program information, fun
facts, and guided listening suggestions in real-time on their mobile devices
from any seat in the hall. This exciting new initiative helps bring audience
members further into the pieces the KWS performs, and we are very pleased
to have been able to bring this innovative new experience here to Waterloo
Region.
Throughout the season we’ve continued to provide strong content on our
Youtube channel and on our website. Our second full year of “The Dress
Rehearsal” videos was hugely successful and continues to provide an inside
look at the orchestra in rehearsal for each Signature Series concert. We also
continued to provide an engaging up-close video experience at several of our
Signature Series concerts. The big screen saw the likes of Anton Kuerti, Jon
Kimura Parker, and the orchestra’s exciting Petrushka finale during the
2013/14 Season; continuing to guide audience members ears through image
magnification.
The Entry Points team continued and improved many other initiatives during the 2013/14 Season. Through preconcert talks, slide presentations before concerts, weekly podcasts, insights from the Music Director, online program
notes and AfterpARTies at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, we have continued to push the KWS patron experience
into unexplored territory. We cannot wait to show you what’s in store for the 2014/15 Season!

Education
The 2013/14 Season was a busy one in the Education
Department. Ella Weber joined us as the Education and
Community Programs Manager, as Chris Sharpe moved to
the Development Department for the year. Ella was busy
ensuring that all of our programs ran smoothly and were
well executed. Our Bridge to Music program continued to
provide subsidized music lessons and instrument rentals
on standard orchestral instruments to low income families
with music instruction provided by KWS musicians. The
students also had opportunities to attend KWS concerts at
no cost with their families throughout the season. In the
spring, the students enjoyed presenting a short recital for
their families.
Lobby activities at a Family concert.
Our School Concerts Program had a very successful season, with several full house performances to
local school children. We continued our partnership with Carnegie Hall’s prestigious Weill Music
Institute (WMI) and presented “The Orchestra Sings” to grade 4 – 6 students as part of our School
Concerts Program. The KWS was the first Canadian orchestra to partner with Carnegie Hall in
presenting this world-class program which brings WMI’s ‘Link Up’ program to schools and students
across Waterloo Region. Uniting the classroom with the concert hall, ‘Link Up’ gives students the
opportunity to actively engage with music through a curriculum of classroom activities and a
concert experience at which students sing, dance and perform on recorder with the KWS at the
Centre In The Square. This program is leading-edge and enhances our already popular School
Concerts Program, and also gives us access to a wealth of additional resources. This partnership is
important for the KWS as it helps us to achieve our goal to get kids making music.
We had another successful summer of KWS Music Camps at the Conrad Centre. Music for Young
Children partnered with the KWS for these camps, leading group lessons in rhythm, movement and
song. Campers had an opportunity to learn about flute, clarinet, violin, cello, trumpet, euphonium
and percussion instruments through mini lessons with KWS teachers and a partnership with Long
and McQuade. This summer, campers were introduced to the elements of music – melody,
harmony, rhythm, timbre, and expression – and of course, they had fun excursions to Victoria Park
for scavenger hunts and visits to the splash pad!
Summer Camps at the Conrad Centre
10 | 2014 Annual Report
Family Concerts and Kinderconcerts provided us
with additional opportunities to reach out to
children and their families. Again, we partnered
with Music for Young Children and they provided
fun, engaging musical activities for children in
advance of the show. Orchestra members
demonstrated their instruments and offered short
mini-lessons to children on instruments provided
through a partnership with Long and McQuade,
and the KW Art Gallery was open for art activities.
All of these were provided as part of the concert
experience in an effort to engage children in music
and music making.
Youth Orchestra
It was another busy season for the KW Symphony Youth Orchestra Program.
We continued to provide weekly classes for students in a variety of
ensembles, culminating in three performance dates at Centre in the Square.
Preludium Strings, Youth Strings and Youth Sinfonia rehearsed weekly at the
Conrad Centre, and the Senior Youth Orchestra and Youth Concert Band
rehearsed weekly at Wilfrid Laurier University. Edwin Outwater visited with
each ensemble this season, offering encouragement and leadership as they
worked towards performance opportunities. And after three busy years Evan
Mitchell concluded his tenure as Conductor of the Senior Youth Orchestra.

Thank you Evan Mitchell
Evan Mitchell finished his third and final season
with the KWS as Assistant Conductor at the end of
the 2013/14 season. We thank him for the
incredible work he has done here. We wish him well
in his new position as Music Director of the Kingston
Symphony!
Evan Mitchell leading the Youth Orchestra
“My warm congratulations to Evan Mitchell, who, in
his three years with our KW Symphony, has done
remarkable work that has added significantly to our
community.
I feel very fortunate to have been able to mentor
Evan in the past few years, and I know the orchestra
feels the same. I think we all feel that he has given
back a tremendous amount. We are all proud of him,
and wish him well in what will surely be an exciting
career.” - Edwin Outwater, Music Director

Development Report
The KWS thanks our generous donors and sponsors, who ensure the KWS continues
as a vibrant, core cultural organization for Waterloo Region and beyond.
The community has continued to show their love for the KWS through
their support this season. So many community members, corporations,
local foundations, and our many partners have supported the music
and the programs that the orchestra brings to Waterloo Region and
beyond.
While the year was filled with challenges there were also many
successes:
 Some very strong showings in the corporate sponsorship/donations
 The introduction of two new community programs
 New partnerships, including Langdon Hall and Steinway Piano
Gallery (Toronto)
 A very successful fundraising dinner hosted by Bob and Judy
Astley
 A series of successful events for donors
 All KWS musicians’ chairs were sponsored
The Development Department was very pleased to launch a new
Corporate Outreach Program that brought a 30-member orchestra into
various workplaces: Communitech; Economical Insurance; Open Text;
the Accelerator Centre; Rimowa and Pepsi, Cambridge; Market Square
(covering Stantec, Good Life and The Record). Each one-hour concert
was free of charge and gave the KWS a chance to showcase our
superb musicians and offered a chance to inform those attending
about the community programs that improve the quality of life across
the Region. We were also able to develop new channels for our
marketing materials and group sales through this program.

Chair Sponsor event at the Conrad Centre.
In addition, a forum attended by the leaders of various health and
wellness organizations was held at the Conrad Centre to determine the
need for KWS musicians within their programs. The forum inspired the
ideas that are leading the KWS to launch a new Health & Wellness
Program in December 2014, that will have KWS musicians involved in
programs for all ages, both in research and for therapeutic purposes.
The KWS is eternally grateful for the generous support of all those who
contribute and enable the excellence in music-making and community
programs.

Awards
The 2013 Mabel Krug Award—Peter and Dee Sprung
At the 2013 Annual General Meeting Catherine Copp presented Peter and
Dee Sprung with the Mabel Krug Award. This award recognized the work of
Peter and Dee who have for many years supported the orchestra through
active work as volunteers, members, subscribers and donors. They have both
enthusiastically taken on leadership roles within the Volunteer Committee,
helping to lead the Music Marathon, hosting events, driving guest artists,
stuffing envelopes – anything that was needed to support the orchestra.
Since joining the Volunteer Committee in 2001 they have been tireless
ambassadors for the KWS. Fixtures at KWS concerts and events, these
individuals continually demonstrate how much they care about the KWS.
The 2013 Rachel Smith-Spencer Award
Nancy Schnarr
(Communications Manager)
2013 was the fourth year that we presented the Rachel Smith-Spencer Award to a staff
member who has exhibited exceptional job performance, dedication, positive attitude, and
contributions to the KWS exceeding expectations. At the 2013 Annual General Meeting
the award was presented to Nancy Schnarr, Communications Manager, after having been
nominated by many staff members. She exceeded expectations in all aspects of her role
this past season. Nancy is a huge asset to this organization, always willing to help other
departments and she always deals with colleagues in a very respectful and professional
manner even during times of high stress. She has the amazing ability to work through
problems and take the time to “just figure it out”. Her positive attitude and sense of
humour help make the KWS a great place to be! Additionally, she went above and beyond
to take on additional responsibilities in the development of the KWS Intranet; in patron
services during the staffing transition last fall, creation of video content and editing,
presence at summer festivals and support of other departments.

KWS Foundation
The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Foundation (KWSF) was established in 1992 in honour of Raffi
Armenian’s 20th Anniversary as Music Director to help secure the financial future of the KWS. The
Foundation is a separate charitable organization from the KWS with its own Board of Trustees responsible for
managing its assets. The Foundation’s objective is to hold and invest donations and to use the investment
income for the benefit of the KWS (the Trustees for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Foundation are listed
on page 20 of this report).
As of July 31, 2014:
The value of the KWS endowment was just over $3.8 million, with
approximately $2.7 held Arts Endowment Fund and Heritage
Fund.
During the 2011/12 Season, the KWS re-launched its planned
giving program with emphasis on legacy giving to the KWS
Foundation, called the Dr. Glenn Kruspe Society. Dr. Glenn Kruspe
formed the KWS in 1945 and was Music Director for 15 seasons.
The KWS would like to recognize those who have, with special
thought and foresight, included the KWS or KWS Foundation in
their estate plans. These donors are recognized as members of the
Dr. Glenn Kruspe Society in house programs and will receive invitations to special events.

Volunteer Committee
This past year was yet again a very successful one for the KWS
Volunteer Committee. At this point we have tried and true
fundraisers and fund savers which fulfill our mandate to support
our wonderful Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.
Let me share with you the financial successes of our events and
activities for this past year:
Showcase Boutique – approximately $5,870.
Fall Card Party - $1,942.
Music Marathon - $11,235.
Spring Concert supporting the KWS - $2,848.
Spring Card Party - $2,530.
House and Garden Tour of Note - $33,810.
Volunteers working at the Music Marathon
By the end of our fiscal year on July 31, 2014 the Volunteer Committee had raised over $58,000. Thus
we were able to make a contribution to the Symphony of $50,000 during this past year.
These presentations were made at two different KWS Board meetings. The Chair of the KWS Board,
Catherine Copp, on behalf of the Symphony, expressed a huge thank you to all our volunteer members for
their diligent work and their commitment to supporting the KWS.
Volunteers at a card party.
We are also a fund saving and support organization for the
KWS.
Besides raising money, the following is a list of ways in which
we saved money for and supported the KWS:
1. Driving guest conductors and artists to and from the airport
2. Driving guest conductors and artists to and from their
hotels
3. Stuffing envelopes with tickets and other info
4. Stuffing programs for concerts at CITS
5. Preparing and serving rehearsal refreshments
6. Helping staff at School Concerts at the CITS
7. Staffing the Volunteer Desk at the CCPA
During the 2013/14 Season our Executive has been committed to the implementation of our Action Plan.
While we still have some work to do, many of our recommendations have been put into practice :
1. A Membership Advisory Committee was formed, which then produced a membership brochure outlining
what we do as a Volunteer Committee.
2. A survey asking our members to share their interests and expertise was created and administered.
3. A standardized evaluation template was created for our events and activities.
4. Job descriptions were developed for our Executive members and our conveners.
5. A Project Development Committee was formed to look at possible new events for our consideration.
All of our 130 Volunteer Committee members are very proud of the work they do for the KWS.
We continue to have a very close working relationship with the KWS staff. We are very grateful for their
support and cooperation especially from Paul Pedersen, Michelle Cutts, Nancy Schnarr, Jeanette Van Wyk,
and Chris Sharpe.
