we believe
our purpose
today
We believe the best way to support a
child or young person with cancer is to
support the whole family. We believe
in walking alongside the whole family
for the whole cancer journey; that all
families have strengths and resilience,
and that cancer does not define a
person. We believe in equity – that no
family of a child or young person facing
cancer should be disadvantaged by
their socio-economic circumstances.
We believe in our people and
collaboration and in ensuring that all
who engage with Redkite feel valued,
connected and supported.
To provide essential support to
children, teenagers and young adults
with cancer (0-24 years) to ensure the
best possible quality of life for them and
their families – now and into the future.
Redkite is a leading national cancer charity with over 30 years’
experience in providing professional and essential support to children
and young people with cancer and their families. We rely on the
generosity of individuals, community groups and corporate Australia
to deliver our programs and we receive no government funding.
our promise to
families
You are not alone with cancer. We will
respectfully listen to you and your
family, and respond with essential
support from hospital to home.
beginnings
The man who inspired the founding of Redkite, Sir Malcolm Sargent, was
a brilliant musician and internationally renowned conductor who often
directed his support to children and young people. His compassion and
love of music is felt to this day in cancer wards across Australia through
Redkite’s Music Therapy Program. Originally named "The Malcolm
Sargent Cancer Fund for Children", Redkite was founded in Australia in
1983 by Sylvia Darley OBE, Sir Malcolm Sargent’s long-time secretary
and manager. Sylvia identified the need for assistance with family
essentials and established Redkite to provide practical, must-have care.

W
elcome to the 2014 Redkite
Annual Review; my first as
Chairman. This year’s review
theme Going the Distance, speaks to our
promise to be here for children and young
people with cancer and their families
with essential support for as long as
they need us. It reflects our professional
collaborations, which are enduring
and deep. It also acknowledges the
demonstrated commitment of our loyal
corporate partners and community of
supporters to the families we support.
In 2014 this commitment enabled us to
direct 33% more funding to supporting
families than in the previous year. We are
there with the essentials. At diagnosis
with valued information and practical
items through the Red Bag Program for
families and Diagnosis Support Packs
for young people. We walk alongside
our clients throughout treatment with
emotional support and music therapy
as well as information and financial
assistance, and beyond treatment with
a range of services, including support so
children and young people can reach their
education and career goals.
Our community of supporters, including
our Premier Partner, corporate partners,
Club Red members, workplace givers,
pro bono supporters, ambassadors and
volunteers are essential to our ability to
offer these services. In some cases these
partners have been going the distance
with us for decades, while others are
more recent additions to our family of
support. We thank them all for their
contribution and for helping us to achieve

2014 Redkite Annual Review
Paying tribute to outgoing
Board members
It is a great honour to be Chairman of a
charity so valued by young people with
cancer and their families, and respected
within the community. I would like to
acknowledge the contribution of my
predecessor, Geoff Brunsdon, who first
joined the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund
for Children in August 2002 and was
instrumental in steering the state-based
entities through the merger process to
become the national organisation Redkite
is today. The quality of Redkite’s service
delivery and the depth of our support
from the community today is testament
to his leadership.
Going the distance
speaks to our promise
to be here for children
and young people
with cancer and their
families with essential
support for as long as
they need us
Outgoing Board members Helen Sewell,
David Hind and John Durkan have also
played tremendously important roles in
our growth. Helen has been a dedicated
advocate for improved care, support
and futures for teenagers, young adults
and families impacted by cancer, as well
as being a passionate representative of
Redkite, in particular in Western Australia.
David’s connection and commitment
to families facing cancer began in the
late 1990s when BOC became our first
corporate partner under his leadership
and continued through the years through
his work on the Board. John's impact
over his three years on the Board has
been significant, particularly in the areas
of revenue and brand growth. We know
Geoff, Helen, John and David will always
be part of Redkite’s family of supporters,
and thank them again for going the
distance with us.
It is a pleasure to work alongside my
fellow Directors on Redkite’s Board, and
share in their commitment to young
people and their families. We welcome
Joost de Kock to the Board in 2015.
Already his deep understanding of our
cause and pro bono support through
BCG has greatly assisted with our future
direction. I would like to thank the
Board, and Redkite CEO Jenni Seton,
for their leadership, and look forward to
continuing our work with the support of
Redkite’s professional and caring team.
Together with our valued supporters and
volunteers, we will all strive to help ensure
essential support is available through the
difficult and often heart wrenching cancer
journey where and when it is needed and
for as long as it takes.
Bruce Morgan, Chair
O
ne of Redkite’s strengths is our
unwavering support throughout
the cancer journey and our
deep understanding of how this journey
can have different paths. Our support
is tailored to meet families’ unique
and specific needs; we listen, work to
understand and respond with respect.
Our care and support is there during
the most difficult of periods, including
individual grief counselling for family
members, bereaved peer support groups
and assistance with funeral expenses
if needed.
The collective care, talent and
commitment of our growing Redkite
community of supporters, volunteers
and team is helping us to bridge the
information and support gap for children
and young people with cancer, as well as
for their families and support networks.
Together we are striving to be there when,
where and how they need us with quality
care of the highest professional standard.
My deepest thanks for your continued
commitment and the outstanding results
we achieved in 2014.
Our strategic focus, to raise the
awareness and accessibility of our
services from hospital to home, achieved
great outcomes. In 2014, we delivered
62 per cent more support sessions on
the phone, via email and face-to-face
to young people, families and education
and health professionals than in 2013. We
also provided 16,000 hours of support
at hospital bedsides across Australia. In
the first full year of our Education and
Career Support Program, we provided
individualised support to more than 200
young people.
We also understand the importance
of collaboration. Redkite has been an
integral part of numerous hospital
oncology units for over 30 years, and is
building strong connections with local
and international organisations in our
sector. Our research and continuous
improvement commitment resulted in our
first independent study to measure the
social impact of our Financial Assistance
Program. This study found that for every
dollar invested in our program, up to
$5.66 of social and economic value is
created. This included economic benefits
and improved emotional well-being for
families, alongside tangible benefits
for our community of partners and
supporters.
Research a continuing priority
Our investment in research is continuing,
with a review of our Education and
Career Support Program underway in
2015 and a partnership with the Centre
for Adolescent Health and the Murdoch
Children’s Research Institute on the
first nationally representative study on
adolescents and young adults with cancer
and their engagement with
health services.
Together we are
striving to be there
when, where and how
families need us with
quality care of the
highest professional
standard.
exceeding our yearly target of 90%. This
year we also launched our Fly the Redkite
campaign, which, thanks to supporters
including Coles and generous television
and radio stations, saw prompted
awareness of Redkite rise by 9% to 54%
with a minimal spend.
This year, with the pro bono support of
BCG, we also developed a clear plan for
the future that includes opportunities to
improve access and connection to our
essential services and information. We
will invest in digital support with a focus
on the needs of both who we help, and our
valued supporters.
I wish to thank and recognise our Board
of Directors and incoming Chairman
Bruce Morgan. They are an extremely
talented and engaged Board who have real
impact and share a genuine commitment
to ensuring young people and their
families receive best of class information
and support services. It is well recognised
within Redkite that our outgoing Board
members, in particular our former
Chairman Geoff Brunsdon, along with
Helen Sewell, John Durkan and David Hind
have played a key role in our significant
growth and development over the past
decade; thank you for being central to
such transformational change. My thanks
also to our loyal supporters, Regional
Councils and Committees and the hard
working Redkite team.
Jenni Seton, CEO
In 2014 thanks to our pro-bono
supporters and cost management, we

for children and their families
support packs for teenagers
and young adults
Redkite is Australia’s largest nongovernment funder of social workers in
children's hospitals, with professionals
in nine major hospitals and treatment
centres around the country.
Our social workers provide direct support
at diagnosis and throughout treatment
as needed. In 2014, our social workers
provided 16,000 hours of support at the
hospital bedside.
Redkite's care is available from the
moment of diagnosis. Redkite Red Bags
contain information and essential support
items for unexpected hospital stays at
diagnosis, including toiletries, a diary,
reusable cups and a teddy bear. There’s
also information to help families navigate
their time in hospital and learn about the
support available to them. In 2014, almost
600 bags were given to children and
their families.
Redkite Diagnosis Support Packs provide
information, practical support and
comfort for teenagers and young adults
up to the age of 24. In 2014 we reached
over 515 teenagers and young adults
with these packs at the time of diagnosis,
giving them support at this difficult time.
Contents are decided through feedback
from young people and include a blanket,
a journal and toiletries.

Susie and Manning’s story
When Susie’s 10-year-old son Manning developed a cough, she took him to
the doctor. She explains that “a week later the biopsy result was in and my
worst fear was realised. Manning had an extremely rare, highly malignant
sarcoma.”
The family then found a cancer diagnosis changes everything.
“In our terrible early days, we were incredibly fortunate to have
supportive employers and families, but even then, the hospital environment
was overwhelming.”
“Redkite’s Red Bag was like a warm hug, full of essentials like a
thermometer, diary, a toothbrush and a teddy bear I could give my fiveyear-old daughter. Redkite was there for us on the very first day and
continues to be there for us throughout our journey,” said Susie.
Susie remembers that “owning a Red Bag also connected me to other
families on a similar journey, as it was immediately recognisable.”
After months of chemotherapy and surgery, Susie is relieved to report
that “our family has just celebrated a pretty magical milestone. Manning has
been cancer-free for a year; he’s riding the BMX bike we got after his initial
diagnosis. And he has signed up for soccer.”
“We know Redkite will be there alongside us while we face the future and
whatever it may hold.”

Redkite supports young people and their
families during treatment, in hospital
and at home. Redkite Social Workers are
available face-to-face, over the phone
or via email. They also facilitate home
support groups for families at various
stages of the cancer journey. Support also
includes the Redkite Book Club, which last
year delivered over 1000 books and other
resources, covering a range of issues faced
during cancer, to 15 hospitals around the
country and directly to families.
Cancer is expensive, often bringing extra
financial demands at a time when a
parent usually has to stop work to be at
their child’s bedside. For young people
with cancer who are living independently,
financial pressures can be overwhelming.
In 2014, we reached 21% more families
with financial assistance, helping with
essentials like keeping food on the table
and fuel for trips to treatment.
Redkite Music Therapists are available
to help children and young people cope
with the stress of cancer. They give young
cancer patients the chance to manage
their pain, express themselves, regain
a sense of choice and control, and have
critical areas of growth and development
stimulated. Redkite Music Therapists
are in six children’s hospitals across
Australia. In 2014 they delivered over
4200 individual sessions and 300 group
sessions.

Adrienne and Georgia's story
Adrienne took her three-year-old daughter Georgia to the doctor after noticing
she was extremely pale and had consistently high fevers. “I was asked to take
her to the emergency room that evening,” Adrienne says. “Within an hour the
diagnosis came back – she had leukaemia.”
“That first night in the hospital, seeing Georgia hooked up to machines, was
really confronting. Georgia could no longer walk and that combined with the
medical responsibilities was overwhelming.
While Adrienne and her family's first connection with Redkite was the Red
Bag, Adrienne says financial support was also helpful. "We had some assistance
with groceries and petrol too, which was great.”
After a second period of treatment, Georgia was released from hospital
following a bone marrow transplant.
“She’s much stronger in body and mind, has made lots of friends, and even
got up in front of the class to tell her story,” says Adrienne proudly. “She’s happy,
cheeky and spirited.”

Redkite's Education and Career
Specialists give tailored, personalised
assistance to 15 to 24-year-old
cancer patients and survivors. These
professionals have a unique
understanding of the specific obstacles
cancer can bring. They work in
partnership with young people to develop
plans so they can pursue their dreams
and build their best possible futures. Our
consultants provide support on the
phone, via email and in person. This is
the only service of its kind available
nationally for young people who have
experienced cancer. Cancer treatment can mean months or
years of disruption to education, training
or work. Redkite’s education grants can
be used to pay for essential education
costs, like tutoring, classroom support,
equipment and university or course fees.
They can also help young people pursue
an interest area such as art, sport or
dance. This critical support is available for
young people who have been diagnosed
with cancer and whose education
has been affected. In 2014, 53% more
children, teenagers and young people

support for bereaved families
A child or young person's death is one of the most devastating events
that can happen to any family. The grief that follows lasts a lifetime and
special times such as birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas can be
especially difficult.
Our services for bereaved families recognise the importance of hope
and dignity, and acknowledge the resources, strengths and commitment
people bring with them to their journey.
Redkite’s support team provides one-on-one grief counselling for
bereaved parents and other family members. Our support groups bring
parents together over the phone, inviting them to share their
experiences and learn from others.
We also help with the cost of funeral expenses. In 2014, over 100
families were assisted with funeral costs. This is essential help at a
challenging time for many families as they can face significant financial
strain after months and years of treatment.
In 2014, we also produced new information resources for the families
of terminally ill children and young people, and bereaved families. These
books were written by UK organisation CLIC Sargent and adapted for
Australian audiences. The new titles are: When your child isn't going to
get better, When your child dies and Living without your child.

Redkite is proud to collaborate and develop
important connections across the health, charity
and government sectors.
Camp Quality collaboration
piloting better Care Pathways
In 2014 we continued our collaboration
with Camp Quality, working together to
ensure children with cancer and their
families received important support.
Redkite Social Workers continued to
facilitate Parent Support Groups at Camp
Quality camps in nine venues across
Australia in 2014.
We also took our book club to these
camps, giving families access to books
that can offer support through cancer.
This collaboration continues in 2015.
Ensuring families have continuity of
support after returning home is the aim
of Care Pathways. This pilot program
was launched in 2014 by Redkite in
collaboration with Queensland-based
Lady Cilento Children's Hospital,
previously known as the Royal Children's
Hospital.
Care Pathways has been designed as
a best-practice model of care, aimed at
supporting families from hospital to home.
Redkite Social Workers continue to
work with families through their treatment
transitions. In collaboration with hospital
oncology specialists, this program creates
a seamless model for professionals
to assist families through this time of
transition and change.
working with CLIC Sargent and
Kids Cancer Centre
With the support of UK cancer charity
CLIC Sargent, Redkite has published
two children’s support books, Lucy has
a tumour and Mary has a brain tumour,
as well as the One day at a time series on
bereavement (see page 17).
With the Kids Cancer Centre at the
Sydney Children’s Hospital, we have also
made available A Guide for Grandparents
of Children with Cancer.

communities to come together in support of children and young people with cancer.
During 2014, customers were invited to buy
$2 donation cards at Easter and Christmas
that were displayed in store. Coles also
continued to generously donate 5 cents
from the sale of every loaf of Coles Smart

Coles store team members held creative
fundraisers ranging from head shaves
through to sausage sizzles and dress in
red days.
Through this incredible effort, Coles
raised $3.88 million during 2014 and played
a significant role in increasing awareness of
Redkite – critical to ensuring families know
Redkite is available for them. Our research
shows that 1 in 3 people in Australia who

2014 Redkite Annual Review
Coles played a key role in enabling
Redkite to support an unprecedented
number of families in 2014. Funding from
Coles enabled the provision of:
• 16,000 hours of counselling and support across nine hospitals
• 1000 education and career support
sessions to help teenagers and young
adults build their best possible futures.
It is thanks entirely to Coles that this
new and much needed support was
established and is now available for
Australia’s young cancer survivors and
patients
• 47 scholarships to help teenagers and
young adults pursue their dreams
• 3500 family support booklets
• A phone translation service to ensure
families from diverse backgrounds can
access Redkite’s support
• More financial assistance for more
families
• More counselling and information on
our support line and extended hours of
availability
This significant contribution from Coles
has meant Redkite has been able to
continue tackling serious gaps in care for
children and young people with cancer in
Australia. We are grateful to the talented
and passionate Coles team, including their
engaged and passionate executive team,
for their unwavering support, passion and
immense generosity.

regular giving
Redkite has a dedicated community
of regular givers, including Club Red
members who support children and
young people with cancer through
monthly donations.
Esther signed up to be a Club Red
member after seeing Redkite's TV
advertisement, which was created on a
pro bono basis and aired for free, over
Christmas 2013. “I had to get involved. I
went to Redkite’s website immediately
and signed up as a regular donor,”
she said.
Esther understands first-hand the
importance of emotional support
during this difficult time. “My family
nursed our mother through cancer,
and I remember how devastating
the news of mum’s diagnosis was. I
remember even the smallest gesture
making so much difference in helping
us cope.”
Club Red is just one form of regular
giving. Workplace giving also provides
Redkite with a regular, sustainable
income. Research shows employees
who are workplace givers are more
engaged, more motivated and feel they
are making a real difference in their
communities.
A company’s support for workplace
giving demonstrates its leadership
and organisational values, while
enhancing its reputation. It also
builds a positive team culture. Many
organisations match their staff payroll
giving donations, which provides an
opportunity to further celebrate
fundraising achievements.

The Board
Board committees
Redkite’s Board oversees and monitors
the management of Redkite and the
performance of the Senior Executive
Team. Board members meet at least six
times during the year and receive detailed
financial and operational reports from
management on a regular basis.
At the end of 2014, there were nine
directors. Directors are appointed for a
term of three years and for a maximum of
three terms. All Directors volunteer their
time and expertise to Redkite in support of
children, young people and their families.
The Board has established Board Committees to oversee particular aspects of Redkite’s
operations and administration. Each Board Committee operates under a charter
approved by the Board. These charters provide for external advisor members in addition
to Director members and are reviewed annually and updated as necessary. The charters
require that every committee includes at least one Director and that members have
suitable qualifications for the role. Each committee reports back to the Board on their
activities.
Remuneration Committee
• Ensures remuneration guidelines and policies are in place for the Chief Executive
Officer, senior executives and staff, and monitors implementation
• Comprised Geoff Brunsdon (Chairman), Jennifer Horrigan and Helen Sewell

managing key risks.
Ethical standards and Code of Conduct
Board members, senior executives, staff and volunteers are expected to comply with
all relevant laws and the values of Redkite determined by the Board. This requires they
act with integrity, compassion, fairness, honesty and respect at all times when working
with children, young people and families affected by cancer and also with colleagues,

Jo
Redkite Social Worker
“I am inspired on a daily basis by
the young people and the families
that I work with. Their openness,
honesty and attitude continues to
inspire and humble me. To be able
to walk with these families along
their journey is a privilege and an
amazing part of working at Redkite.”
Luke
Education and Career Support Specialist
“I have the amazing opportunity
to assist young people in building
the vision of their future, and to
plot out their education and career
options. I believe in the importance
of navigating career choices and
know how this can have a significant
impact on a young person's future.”
Nathan
National Manager, Hospital and
Community Based Support
“It's a great privilege to be invited
into the worlds of the young people
and family members we work with.
We work to offer space to discuss
their thoughts, fears and hopes. We
help to identify their strengths and
the resources they have to manage
as best they can. I'm continuously
inspired by the resilience and
concern for others shown in the most
difficult of circumstances.”
Due to Redkite's generous community of supporters and
our unwavering commitment to efficient and effective
operations, we were able to direct 33% more funding to
the delivery and development of essential family support
services in 2014 over the previous year. Notably, we delivered
tailored education and career support to teenagers and
young adults, delivering our first full year of this important
support. In addition, we provided 62% more information and
counselling support (excluding in-hospital care) and reached
26% more families with essential financial help.
There was a continued focus on keeping administration and fundraising costs down in
2014. Administration accounted for just 9% of funds raised and our direct fundraising costs
accounted for only 6%, a slight decrease on 2013 from 7%.
It is critical that families can easily access the support they need and it is for this reason
building awareness of Redkite and the support we can give remained a key organisational
priority in 2014. We delivered a highly successful multi-channel advertising campaign with
promotions spanning TV, cinema, radio, online and outdoor locations – all made possible by
over $2 million in pro bono support. High quality content created for this campaign resulted
in a 9% increase in awareness of Redkite across the national population and, notably,
an 8% increase in understanding that Redkite supports children and young people with
cancer. This was achieved by increasing expenditure on promotion and profiling from 2% of
expenditure in 2013 to just 3% in 2014.
Our focus on sustaining and building a diverse revenue base remains critical to ensuring
we can maintain the higher level of support we are now delivering to families. Redkite
appreciates and respects the ongoing support of our generous individual donors, loyal
corporate partners, dedicated event sponsors and attendees, passionate community
fundraisers, keen volunteers and the committed trusts and foundations that have extended
their care to families facing cancer. We secured a 9% increase in income during 2014 with a
significant contribution being donated by our Premier Partner, Coles. Ongoing support from
all of our supporters including Coles has allowed us to start addressing some of the most
acute gaps in support for children and young people with cancer and their families
in Australia.
At the end of 2014
Redkite had 68 full and
part-time team members
based in Adelaide,
Brisbane, Melbourne,
Perth and Sydney.
