Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce 2 From the President’s Desk WHOOPERS & HOOPERS! Tom Hastings LEGISLATIVE ISSUES! What another great year for the Whoopers & Hoppers Basketball Tournament. With over 135 teams and 1100 plus players, it was another outstanding weekend for Hastings and the surrounding area. It was the second largest, according to the number of teams, to ever participate in the Whoopers & Hoopers tournament. With the people they bring along to watch games and with time between games to shop and spend money, the economic impact on the community is phenomenal. We have already had two coffees this year with Senator Seiler and have one more scheduled for May 9, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. at Kitty’s Roadhouse located at 1400 E. South Street. These coffees are co-sponsored by the Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce and the Adams County Farm Bureau Federation. Senator Seiler discusses issues that are pertinent this legislative session as well as take questions from the floor. I would like to thank the many sponsors, advertisers, volunteers and everyone who helped with this year’s tournament. It would not be a success without your support and contributions. Living in Hastings, we take for granted how good this tournament really is. I had the opportunity to talk to numerous players, and without a doubt, the tournament we hold in Hastings is the premier tournament in the Midwest. That is a great compliment coming from players who play in numerous tournaments throughout the year and come from all over the United States. Last but not least, I would like to give a big thank you to the Whoopers & Hoopers Committee and the Chamber staff for the endless hours they put in to make this such a fantastic event. There is one more Tri-City Legislative luncheon scheduled for Tuesday, April 7th. This is an opportunity to go to Lincoln and meet with numerous Senators and discuss issues and ask questions regarding issues that you are concerned with in this legislative session. We normally meet at 9:45 a.m. at the Chamber and are back in Hastings by 3:00 p.m. ADVERTISING STUDY RESULTS! The Retail Development Committee of the Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce recently employed the services of Dr. Corey Stutte of Strategic Pioneer to conduct a retail study to help identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of our community and surrounding area. The information from the study is broken down into several categories and geared toward specific market segments and can be found on the Hastings Area Chamber website. We also just finished an advertising survey and will be having presentations at the Chamber Development Center to provide businesses with information and results from that study. We are hoping this will help businesses better capture their market potential. For more information please contact the Chamber at 402-461-8400. There are also a number of legislative conference calls still scheduled for this legislative session. They are all at 2:10 p.m. at the Chamber Development Center and last approximately 20 minutes. The dates for the rest of the year are April 16th, & 30th, and May 14th, & 21st. These conference calls are conducted by the State Chamber and they update legislation that pertains to business issues being discussed this legislative session. They are also willing to answer questions on any business related issue. Hope you can participate in one of these events. www.hastingschamber.com Ribbon Cuttings, Anniversary Salutes, and Events Ribbon Cutting Ribbon Cutting Ribbon Cutting Brenda & Company Floral 211 North Lexington Long John Silvers 1040 South Burlington Avenue Truly Scrumptious Bakery 3240 South Bladen Avenue — Juniata Business After Hours Business After Hours Partners Adams County Farm Bureau Ron Pavelka Farms Dakota Mac Prairie Loft Kober Farms, Inc. Come “have a ball” with us on Thursday, May 21st for the annual Walk Out on Work. As always, this free event is open to employees in the community, but wait……there’s more! To give the event a little more “bounce” this year, the Wellforce committee is offering an additional challenge – the 21 Days of Wellbeing. This is a free 21 day incentive program that you can offer to your employees. See the insert in this newsletter and watch your e-mail for an attachment from the Chamber containing a form with 21 wellbeing activities for you and your employees to complete. Cross off the activities as you go, with the final activity as Walk Out on Work. There will be a box available at the event to drop off your completed activity form. Winners will be drawn from this box for a chance to win Chamber bucks! Even if you can’t make the event, if you and/or your employees have completed the card, get your form to the Chamber by Friday, May 22nd and you will still be entered in a separate drawing. The Wellforce committee also encourages you to provide prizes for your employees as an additional incentive to complete the program. So get geared up for Wellbeing starting May 1st and then get your employees to Walk Out on Work, May 21st. The event will be held starting in the circle drive of the Gray Center at Hastings College. Limited parking will be available at the Gray Center, otherwise please park in the Arena parking lot (on 12th St) and walk across the bridge to the Gray Center. The event will run from 11:30-1:30 and you are invited to come anytime. If you would like to reserve a sack lunch (cost to be determined), please call or e-mail Linsey Martin at the Chamber [email protected] or 402-461-8400. Like this space? It can be yours!
