Dear Members and Subscribers:
C
WHAT
THE
MASTER
SURNAME
INDEX
IS
The MASTER SURNAME INDEX is one of The Tennessee Genealogical Society's
efforts to aid you in your family research. The Index contains more
than 25,000 cards, representing individuals found in the family trees
of our members and subscribers. Our file is not restricted to any particular locality, but covers families who lived in various European
countries and in every state of t~e United States.
HOW
TO
USE
INDEX
Members and subscribers may request information from this file by
writing to The Tennessee Genealogical Society, Post Office Box 12124,
Memphis, Tennessee 38112. Requests are LIMITED TO FOUR SURNAMES PER
REQUEST. A SElF-ADDRESSED, STAMPED ENVELOPE MUST accompany each request.
ONLY MEMBERS AND SUBSCRIBERS MAY USE THIS SERVICE.
WHAT
YOU
RECEIVE
Information sent you from this file includes data from the card and
names and addresses of those working on the same line. WE DO NOT DO
FAMILY RESEARCH. The only information we can send you is the data on
the cards in the Master Surname Index.
SEND
IN
YOUR
CARDS
You can help make this file more effective by sending us a 3 x 5 inch
file card for EACH member of your family tree to be added to this
Master Index. Cards should be typed or printed.
WHAT
TO
PUT
ON
CARDS
Please follow the outline of a sample card below in preparing your
cards. Each card should contain at least one date and one place, even
if they are estimated or guessed. This will enable us to determine that
a person who lived in one area in the 17th century is.a different person
from someone (with the same name) who lived in another area in the
19th century.
We hope that you will find this Index helpful, and also that you will
share your family information by sending in cards on your family.
~
. . Sincerely,V

given special emphasis. Also noted are Pleasant Hunter, who established the

early in January 1696. Dennis' wife, Elizabeth, came with him. She was the mother
of Brient, Dennis, Francis, Thomas, and probably of Isaac and Jacob, believed to
be older brothers. From North Carolina the McClendons moved with the tide of
immigration through the southern and western states and finally throughout the
nation. The author has recorded 13 generations of family history, a notable
accomplishment.

By Jerry Blair (Mrs.'W. R.)
A reader sends in some early Catholic records of baptisms at Memphis in 1839:
Children of Basil and Catherine (Spaeh) Rapp; Michael and Mary (Murphy) Leonard;
Patrick R. and Henrietta Bordley; and William and Pauline (Phiphs) Prince. The
sponsors were Francis Scheller, Balina Prince, Catherine Ca1field, P. McKeon, and
Sophia Phobus. Father Clancy married Eugene Magevney and Mary Smyth on May 31,
1840, in perhaps the f.irst Catholic ceremony in Memphis. It took place in the
Magevney home, which still stands on Adams Avenue, near St. Peter's Church.
Father McAleer's first recorded baptism was that of Mary, the first child of
Mr. and Mrs. Magevney, who afterwards became a Dominican Sister. The date was
February 24, 1841. Other baptisms in the same year were of the children of
Edward and Drusilla (Cherry) Read; John and Margaret (Clancy) Conagham; Thomas
and Catherine (McCabe) Hogan; James and Mary (Gorman) Green; William and Margaret
(Brady) McKeon; James and Mary (Warfel) McNamee; John and Margaret (Poland) Burke;
and James and Annora (Hooligan) Nugent. The sponsors were Joseph A. White,
Catherine Shaller, William and Mary (Dunn) English, James Kennedy and wife, Mary
Larkin, William Bradshaw, Mary Conaghan, Patrick McKeon, PatricK Farrell, Michael
Gaffney and wife, James and Mary (Quinn) O'Brien, Robert Burke, Mrs. Michael Kiely,
and a Mr. Jones.
In 1842, parents of children baptized were: Frederic and Margaret (Bonninger)
Udwig; Michael and Bridget (Handlon) Power; William and Mary (Quinlan) Irwin;
Michael B. and Margaret (Murphy) Martin; Francis and Bridget (Foley) Coffey; John
and Bridget (O'Connor) Burke; M. and Mary Agnes (Snyder) Miller; and Rudolph and
Elizabeth (Armstrong) Davis. Godparents were Patrick Golden, Mrs. Davern, Thomas
Costigan, Bridget Powers, Denis Kerby, Mary McCarthy, Thomas McKeon, John McMahon,
Mary Haley, Bridget Archer, John Carroll, Joseph C. and Mary Ursula Snyder, Michael
McNamara, Ann Reagan, ,and Peter Connolly and wife.
On October 29, 1841, Father McAleer received a deed from John Claybrook: "
deem it a pleasing duty to record • • • the magnanimous fact that the Church lot
was in part donated to our Bishqp for the Catholic congregation worshipping at
Memphis, by the acting agent (Mr. Claybrook) of the heirs of Judge Overton's
estate, the nominal price required by the agent being five hundred dollars, which
our Protestant brethren very generously paid." (Records of St. Peter's) Henry and
William Irwin had the contract for the woodwork; the firm of Hickman and Austin
received that for the masonry. D. Morison was the architect. Simultaneously
with the church, which faced on Third Street, Father McAleer built a rectory
which stood at the rear of the church and fronted on Adams Avenue. Hardly had
the church been completed than it was realized that it was much too small. In
the CATHOLIC TELEGRAPH of Cincinnati, December 18, 1852, we read: "The Catholics
of Memphis, Tennessee, are about to erect one of the most splendid edifices west
of the Alleghanies • •• It is to have two towers, each one hundred feet high,
surmounted by a chime of bells." (From records donated .to the Tennessee Archives
by Catherine Magevney Hamilton.)
Among the most noted additions to the Catholic community in Memphis was a nephew
of Bishop Miles - Dr. George Murphy, a successful physician. The Catholic Advocate
of January 24, 1846, notes his marriage: "Dr. George Murphy of Memphis, Tennessee,
to Miss Mary Ann McManus of Bardstown, Kentucky, in the latter place on January 15."

-63MEMOIRS OF WILLIAM FLOYD, OF BEDFORD CO., TENN.
Contributed by Polly Bouton
Notes and reminiscences from Uncle William Floyd given to Charlie E. Gowen in the
Swnmer of 1904 when he (Uncle William) was in his 84th year. l
David Crocket---We will begin with this old pioneer, whose name will add historic interest to the following "Sketches". We are reminded that Crocket once
lived on the east prong of Mulberry about one-and-one-half miles from County Line
in Moore County, Tennessee.
There is some dispute as to the exact location of the Crocket cabin. Some claim
that it was on the Amos Gore farm, where Jim Bird now lives-- but what gives rise
to this is that "Billie" Crocket --- David' s brother-- once lived there, while
David lived further down the branch near the present home of Jim Brown.
My grandfather, James B. Gowen, pointed out the exact location of the cabin to
Uncle William, and to his best recollection, it stood near the Brown place and on
the same side of the road. This is the most authentic account that can be had.
Gowen and Crocket were companions and neighbors, and with their dogs and rifles
had visited frequently.
Crocket was a guest at the home where Bill Mullins now lives, has slacked a hunters thirst at the "cave spring" while "Old Betsy" his trusty rifle was quietly
resti.ng against the old "Beech tree".
Gowen ,sees him on one occasion, after he had married his second wife, and joked
him about his "New wife" who had about $800.00 in cash. David said, this will be
mighty good "Sass" (Sauce) to carry along with us.
It is said that Crocket cleared a field or parcel of land on the farm, now owned
by Geo. Gowen in the 24th Dist. of Bedford County, Tennessee. It is here, wrestling with the "sassfras" that adorn the Summit of "Hungary Hill", that the brawn
and bravery was developed that afterwards made him famous as a soldier as well as
a hunter and back woods statesman. So here in the jungles of the forest, living
with his first wife, the faithful one who crossed the mountain of East Tennessee
with him, that this old pioneer no doubt spent his happiest days. He says himself
that "his reputation" as a hunter was made on Mulberry. He tells Gowen where he
once killed a panther. He was drinking from the fine spring on the south side of
Man's Ford on Elk River; the panther sprang on him; he killed him with his"Bowie
Knife".
Crocket was killed March 6th 1836 at the Alamo, Texas.
James B. Gowen was born in Bedford County, Virginia Nov. 22nd, 1785 near the
present town of Lynchburg, Vi~ginia and settled in Bedford County, Tennessee, near
the town of Lynchburg. He often related this coincidence. His father was killed
with ~n ax by a crazy man. His mother's maiden name was Burns, hence James Burns
Gowen, she was of Scotch descent and was related to Robert Burns the Scottish poet.
His father married second time, but wife's name not known; three children by the
second wife, two boys and one girl; Jeremiah, Sanford L., and Jida. We may have
relatives from this source somewhere also of Irish descent.
Grandfather would joke his children about their Irish when they got their "dander
up". Only two of his first children, James B. and William, who were left orphans,
James B. at the age of three and William younger; both bound out to an uncle --Burns.
Grandfather was set free at 16 years of age, split rails to pay for a pony, when
payed for it died. Suffered many hardships and privations. Dr. William Gowen,
his brother, settled near Woodbury in Cannon County; married Elizabeth Moore, a
splendid woman, raised large family, among which were Dr. Ike and Jim Gowen of
Nashville, Tennessee.
Grandfather first settled in Williamson County on Harpeth River where he married

Ann Price Feb. 23rd 1808. Prior to his marriage, he kept "batch" with his wouldto-be- brother-in-law, Geo. Price. Came to Bedford County the following year,
killed a deer near the present site of the court house at Shelbyville, Tennessee.
Settled at the old place in 1809. The chimney mound now in yard marking the site
of one of the first log huts erected at the head waters of Mulberry. The house,
in which his youngest daughter now lives, was raised July 4th 1815.
Oldest child "Bettie" born in Williamson County. Children as follows: Elizabeth
married Daniel Brown; Harriet married Emijah Anthony; Mathew married Edens first;2
second time widow Mullins; Sallie married William Floyd; Thomas married a Thomas.
Last wife of grandfather Gowen was Lucy Emry, large family of last children as
follows: Annie married William McKelvy; Tillie married James Morrow; Tempy married
James K. Floyd; Fannie married Tom Clark; Laura married Bill Mullins; James married
Millie Mitchel; Joe married Fannie Hutson; 1som and Bennie both died single.
Mathew Price and wife, my great grandparents, came from South Carolina and settled
in Williamson County on the Harpeth River; note that here is where grandfather met
his first wife, Ann Price. Later said Price settled at the "Big Spring" about onehalf mile north of County Line, Tennessee. He and his wife were noted for their
kindness and hospitality. Wife's maiden name Elizabeth Eskridge; she was very
smart and industrious; both buried in "Old Price grave yard"; he died suddenly, had
been tying fodder before breakfast in a little field below "Cooper Shop", came in,
fell across bed, and died instantly. Prices as a rule very smooth, conservative,
easy-going folks.
John Price, one son, was Old Baptist preacher; "Big gun" John like his mother,
full of vim and energy, once owned the Green farm below County Line; married a
Coffee, moved to '~estern District" West Tennessee; got sick, started to nearest
Dr. at Memphis, and died on the road. George Price, another son, married Fitney
Hodge, lived and died where Parson Ervin now lives, was an awful sufferer with
gravel in bladder and died from operation. Sallie married a widower Tom Roundtree,
whose first wife was a Gilbreath. Preacher Tom Shaw was Tom Roundtree's grandson,
his mother being a daughter of Roundtree by his first wife, Gilbreath.
First Shaw known was Thomas Shaw, father of this preacher Shaw.
Aunt Sallie Roundtree 3 had three children, Pollie, Ann and William, always called
"Buck". Pollie married Jim Berry; Ann married first Milford Dean, second Ben Berry.
Jim and Ben were brothers and were among the first Berrys. Buck married a Mayfield.
Ann had three children by Berry, one girl married John Bennett of Nashville. John
Price's boys, George and Mathew, were killed at Corinth, Mississippi.
Jim Driver was the first Driver to come to Tennessee; he was the father of Noel
Driver and grandfather of Thomas Driver; came from North Carolina and first settled
near Beech Grove, afterwards lived in "Screamsville" where Tom now lives. His wife
peddled on brooms, soap and other articles~ she was an Avon and was of Cherokee
descen,t.
John Hodge was first Hodge; was father-in-law of Geo. Price; also grandfather of
Millie Gowen.
John Watson and wife came from Union Dist. South Carolina, his first wife's name
not known; there were two children, boy named Dave, girl married a Dodds, second
wife a Whitmore, children by last wife as follows: Joe, Sallie, Sidney, Bettie,
Jim, Watt, Fin, Miles Bobe and Mathew. Joe married a Jones; Sallie married Elijah
Floyd; Sidney married Kin Pearson;4 Bettie first married a Tilly, second a Prichard;

John Watson first settled at Jim Farrar's place and his boys Joe and Watt had a
blacksmith shop opposite the site of the present one. Lived again on hill above
Eliphus Hix's; the log wall in which grandmother Floyd was married is now in Jeff
Stephen's yard.
He was a cripple and wore a thick soled shoe; his grandson Kin Pearson now has
the shoe. Sallie was our grandmother; Bettie was connected with the "Dean episode";
Miles Bobe went to Mississippi to oversee negros and a negro killed him; Fin married
in Trigue County, Kentucky, and died in prison, Rock Island, Illinois. Watt died
in house in Jim Floyd's field; Jim died, left wife and two children, Kin and Marion;
his father-in-law, Hesekiah Brown, took children to Arkansas. 6
My grandmother Sallie Floyd! was eight years old when she came to this state,
walked most of the way from South Carolina, camped with Indians and learned much of
their dialect which she has repeated to me when I was a child; she was a remarkably
. strong woman mentally and physically, was a great reader and took interest in current events even in her old age, she died at the advanced age of 92 years.
Bobe was born in a house at Rossville near Chattanooga. where they were camping en
route to Tennessee. The Watsons were perhaps of Irish descent.
Dave Floyd and wife, my great grandparents, came fro~ Union Dist. South Carolina,
settled at what is now known a~ the Boyer's place about one mile south of Flat
Creek, Bedford County, Tenn. Wife was a Norman,8 a sister to Edward Gore's wife,
hence the Gore relation. Raised a large family, died on the same day, and were
buried in one grave at Flat Creek. Children are as follows: Jonathan, George,
David, Enoch, Elijah, Hosea, Holcum, Peggy.9 Jonathan married a Finney. Five
children, names as follows: David, James, Spencer B., Pollie and Priscilla. Spencer
B. Floyd was Col. of Yankee regiment stationed at Memphis, was a smart man; Uncle
William has letter written by him to grandfather Floyd. Jonathan went to Illinois
70 years ago. This is the st~8k of Floyds in the north.
George Floyd married a Cox,
sister to Thomas Cox; moved to Tippah County, Mississippi 70 years ago. His children are as follows: John, Thomas and David. His
son Tom came back to see kinfolks when grown young man, was fine looking and very
jolly.
Dave married a Reagor, daughter of Anthony Reagor, sister to Abram and John
Reagor, who lived above Jess Coleman's at Jim K. place. Raised a large family of
children. Sam, Anthony, Allen, Jim K., Becky, Kate, Mary, Peggy and Jane. Note
how all names are handed down. Becky married Jim Farrar; Uncle William was best
man at Jim Farrar's wedding, stood up with the bride's cousin, Mayrel Reagor's
daughter, the one that married a Dwiggins and went crazy. Uncle David objected to
his girl's marriage to Jim Farrar. Jess Coleman married two of the girls, he first
married Mary, then Jane.
Enoch married a Shook. Enoch was a M. preacher, also a very fine cabinet maker
and mechanic. Went to Jackson, Mississippi 70 years ago; name of some of his
children, Calvin, Alvy, William, Milton, (for his great grandmother, maiden name)
Louiza, etc.
Elijah married Sallie Watson 12 and raised a large family near Flat Creek, Tenn.
Hosea married a Couser, sister to John Couser (Aunt Betsy's husband). Old Jim
Couser, the first known Couser, was their father. Hosea was killed by a Yankee who
shot at random near Fayetteville, Tennessee, was a good, gentle, harmless man; name
of some of his children, John,Elijah, Jim, David, etc. Jim killed at Perryville,
Kentucky; David married, had several girls, one married a Sanders, one a Cole.
Peggy married Jim Beavers, she is buried on Cane Creek; note how the Beaver kinship came in by our great aunt's marriage. Pricilla married John Davis.

Jonathan, George and David in battle of New Orleans. One of them wounded on
Dec. 14th which was decisive battle.
Billie Pearson was first of that family to come to Tennessee. Born in South
Carolina in 1763, died at W. P. Bobo's place and was buried under "rock box" grave
in Bobo's lot. He first settled at Jim Farrar's place. His wife's name was a
Jacks; he was a' soldier in the Revolutionary war, was accused of being a Tory;
when he died, search was made for the "red coat" but it was not found.
Bobo: Elija 13 and Elisha Bobo, twin brothers were the founders of this heterogeneous race in this "diggins". They came from South Carolina, the origin of the
name was in this way; a boy was found in an old stable in the rack which was made
of bows, hence Bo-bo. Aunt Ellen Bobo's maiden name was Raines, daughter of Baley
Raines.
Jess Coleman and brother first known Colemans, six or seven brothers, all their
names begin with "J", Jesse, Joshua, etc.
Two old Beardens, Billie and Eli; Billie was Finis' father, Eli was Willis and
Winris' father. I have it now from John Bearden (Billie and Eli's father) came to
this country and is buried at Flat Creek. He was a Revolutionary Soldier and many
years ago the government sent some parties to locate his grave in,order to erect a
monument, but his grave could not be found.
First Enochs: Isaac Enochs, Uncle Davy's father, had a brother named John.
First Edens: Samuel and Alex, Samuel's wife a Franks, Uncle Jack's parents.
Alec's wife a Walker.
First Bedford was Billie Bedford, very dark complexioned; Ben Bedford's father;
married a Dance.
First Ray: Hesikiah Ray; sons Jason, Solomon and Jabel by first wife; second
wife a Jones, her children, Manuel and Marion. Jason's wife, Aunt Linnie Smith,
had a brother who was a Mormon preacher. Soloman, wife a Clary, father of John C.
Ray.
First Reagor: Anthony Reagor, wife a Shooks. It is said that all'Reagors were
killed in the Indian massacre except one little boy, this Anthony Reagor who came
to Tennessee from North Carolina and was of German descent.
Sallie Skidmore, Sallie Rambo and Peggie Hewlins were the old "witches" whom the
Reagors and others so much feared. They verily believed in the power of the "Hoo
Doo" and bewitch, but to make the picture of the "witch" and shoot it with a silver
bullet they believed would break the spell. This Abram Reagor once did to "set
right" the deformed twins Isaac and Jacob. Uncle Tommie Dean performed the same
"feat" when a thief had stolen his horse. So the old Salem ''Witchcraft'' creeps
down the centuries.
First Stegal was Obediah, wife a Hodge.
First Holt: Jake Holt, wife a Byrom, Esq. Jim Holt's mother; second wife a Raney.
Uncle Jim Stone,' one of first Stones; wife a Woosley, Uncle John Woosley's sister.
Aunt Peggy was noted for good "Hoss sense". He had a brother Stone who settled in
Cannon County.
First Hix: Billie Hix, who cut his throat with a shoe knife at John Frost's
place; first wife not known, second wife a Collins, Buck Hix's mother. ''Womble'',
Billie Hix's father was a brother to Old Billie.
Dr. Newton married Betsy Hix, his brother "Nick" Newton married Sallie Hix.
First Hurstz: Billie and Jim. Billie's wife a Beard; was Uncle Jack's father.
Jim was Berryman's father; Berryman married Kate Cambell.
First Baxter was James Baxter (Marlow's father); wife a Guthery.
First Farrar: John and Jordon; John married a Harris, was Jim Farrar's father;
his wife was first cousin to Isham G. Harris. Jordon married a Hawkins, father of
Joe Farrar, came from North Carolina.
First Frost was Ebenezar Frost (was Elder John Frost's father) came from North

Carolina, married the widow Clary, whose maiden name was Wright, hence the Wright
in the'Frost family. She was married four times, had two girls by the Clary husband; one of these girls married Billie Little, father of Elder T. C. Little, hence
Bro. John Frost was Bro. T. C. Little's half uncle. Ebenezar Frost left in 1837 in
a four horse wagon when the Indians were being driven back and never returned.
Billie Gipson and brother George were the only Gipsons known here.
Old Granny Wiseman, who lived to be over 100 years old and whose remains rest at
the Gowen grave yard, was a Merrial; husband died in North Carolina. Two children
by her husband, Isaac and Nancy. Isaac Wiseman once lived here but moved to Illinois. Nancy married Noel Driver, • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
First Ervin was Hesekiah, wife a Simmins hence the "s" in Parson J. S. Ervin's
name, who was a grand-son.
First Ward was Noah Ward, wife's name not known, but she was a fiddler, had a son
named Noah who married Ann Brown.
First Gore, Edward Gore, wife a Norman, a sister to our great grandfather Floyd's
wife, this is where the Gore relation comes in. His sons were Thomas, Amos and
John; John went to Talladega, Alabama, Amos and Thomas raised large families here.
Thomas married a Shofner, Amos married a Couser,14 this is where that stock of
Gore's get the "Mark" of heavy eye brows, which render them so unlike Uncle Tom's
family; get this distinguishing feature from Couser side.
First Broadway was Uncle Lemual, wife a Boon, sister to Billie Boon.
First Boon, Billie Boon, wife a Howard, hence the Howard in Boon Family; she was
a sister to Old Joe Parker's wife, this is where the parker and Boon relation come
in. Said Boon was lineal descendant of Daniel Boon.
First McKelveys; Noah, Sam, Joe and William.
Emjiah and Hosea Anthony came from North Carolina,
•••••• • • . • ••• ,
their mother lived to be very old with Emjiah.
Plyants not known any further back than Jackson.
Miscellany
Meg's grandmother "Akins" once lived here on this place, entered this land. Sam
Anders her son-in-law lived here with her and perhaps dug the well.
Bro. Shaw married Sam Ander's step daughter, his wife's daughter by first husband,
Landers. This is why Bro. Shaw and Mrs. Holt are related.
Aunt Bettie Brown was exact age of Andrew Johnson born Dec. 29, 1808.
Bedford County court use to convene in an old log house on hill above Rufus Hix
place. The court house was situated near Uncle William Stone's. I would like to
add to what Charlie E. Gowen and Great Grandfather Floyd have given concerning the
court house. It was built by the widow Ann Barton Payne on the head waters of East
Mulberry Creek one half-mile north east of the little village of County Line, about
three miles north of Lynchburg. The widow Payne was a kinsman by marriage of Dolly
Madison, wife of the president. She had a son-in-law Marmaduke Williams who was a
lawyer in Fayetteville. Andrew Jackson owned land near by on East Mulberry Creek
and attended court in the house of the widow Payne.
Here Thomas H. Benton afterwards great senator from Missouri and Felix Grundy
practiced law. Benton wrote a book "Thirty Years in Congress" which was then a
standard on Political History.
First man buried at Flat Creek was named Reynolds; lived near Jim Floyd's; hauled
him out through Canes on an ox slide.
Uncle William Floyd voted his first ticket in 1844 for Henry Clay, a Whig. He
has heard the following "big guns" speak; Andrew Johnson 1855 at big barbecue at
Flat Creek, James K. Polk 1860 at Shelbyville, John Bell a Whig, Bayly Payton, Isham G. Harris, Neil S. Brown a Whig, Aaron _. Brown a Democrat, Bill Polk, "Lean
Jimmie" Jones, Gus Henry the eagle orator and Meredith P. Gentry who lived in Bedford County on Sugar Creek. It is said of him that his limbs "might get drunk but

his head was clear" whisky got him as it did William T. Haskell, both silver
tongued orators. Haskell perhaps did more for temperance in those days by his
powerful speeches than anyone and his friends tried hard to save him from the
demon drink. He made temperance speeches allover the state.
James Gowen has a saddle on which his father swam Tennessee River while serving
under Andrew Jackson.
Joe Gowen has a wash pot which was purchased by his father in Nashville when
there was only one store there.
Tillie Morrow has a chest which was presented to him by a cabinet maker in
Williamson County for recovering his stolen horse from the Indians.
Grandfather killed an Indian while serving under Jackson; while it was done in
self defense he always regretted it. He was behind tree; Indian hit tree and filled
his eyes with bark; then is when he shot him. He was a great hunter and fisherman
and kept up said sport even in old age.
He killed a bear near Lynchburg and another on Joe Gowen's place near the spring.
He was one year older than David Crocket, (Crocket born on Nollichucky River East
Tennessee) Aug. 17, 1785 died May 14, 1880 age 94 years 5 months and 25 days.
(This was Gowen's age)
He swapped Old Nat Berry for Ishmael and got $300 boot. Did this to get Ishmael
and Rachel, his wife, together. Ismael taught Jim Gowen to work, ~ery sleepy old
darkey, go to sleep sitting at table or any where out in the field and dream the
"Haunts" were "arter" him; "Hants arter me Jimmie cut em loose," at which request
Jimmie would scrape around with his knife, which set the old darky right. Ishmael
buried at County Line, Rachel buried at Flat Creek. She lived to be very old; five
children, John, Jane, Ben, Dan and Dick.
Grandfather Floyd was one eyed but hardly noticeable. Grandmother Floyd'S father,
John Watson. was cripple by a fall near Ray's mill; she many years afterwards was
crippled by a fall at the same place.
John Watson and wife buried at Pearson grave yard on Motlow place. Wat Watson's
wife was a daughter of the Jones who lived at Jesse Coleman place. Joe Watson's
wife I think of the same family; often heard grandmother speak of the Jones.
Shelbyville's first merchant was James Deery and his goods were brought from
Philadelphia and Baltimore on pack horses and mules.
Originally Bedford County had 25 civil districts but when Marshall County was
formed, 6 districts were cut off to that County and it has but 19 civil districts.
John Adkinson, Barclay Martin, Howell Dandy, John Lane, Daniel McKissick, William
Wood, Benjamin Bradford were com~issioners who located the town of Shelbyville and
laid off the town lots. Shelbyville still has a Lane, Martin, Adkinson and Dandy
Street.
First Court house in Shelbyville was put up in 1810. It was a small frame
structure and stood on the north west corner of the public Square. It was burned
and in a few years akrick court house was built in the center of the public square.
This was destroyed by the great tornado of 1830, then another brick house was built
on the same site; this was burned in March 1863 while occupied by Confederate
troops; next was built our present magnificent court house, the best in the state,
cost $125,000. (Supplied by Klyne Jack Keller:
This magnificent building was
burned by a drunken mob Dec. 19,.1934 in an effort to take a negro prisoner from
officers, was rebuilt the following year 1935, at a cost of $170,000.)
George W. Floyd (son of George Floyd and wife Elizabeth Reagor) soldier in the
Spanish American War died in Majayjay, Philippine Islands and was later brought
back and buried at Flat Creek in the New grave yard.
This write up by Charlie E. Gowen was loaned to Klyne Jack Keller by Floyd Driver
of Lynchburg, Tennessee. It was given to him by Cage Floyd, a son of Uncle William
Floyd or great grandfather Floyd.
The next few sheets gives something of the Gowen, Price, Floyd, Watson, and Pearson families who lived in the vicinity between Flat Creek and County Line in Bedford

PETITIONS OF CITIZENS OF SULLIVAN, HAWKINS, GREEN & WASHINGTON
COUNTIES, TENNESSEE - 1835
Transcribed by Betsy West (Mrs. Daniel)
To the Honorable The Senate & House of Representatives of the State of Tennessee
in General assembly met.
The memorial of the Citizens of the counties of Sullivan, Hawkins, Green
and Washington in that part of these counties labouring under the disadvantages
hereinafter expressed. Your memorialists state that they reside from fifteen
to thirty miles from the places of holding courts in these counties there in
attending to their duties as citizens of these counties they have for many
years been exposed to great inconvenience & expense in attending courts as
jurors, witnesses, and attending muster and the various other public~ duties to
which citizens are exposed and it must be evident to your honorable body that
is the fact by a ban recurrence to the map of the state which will fully show
their real local situation. Your memorialists state that the section of the
county in which they live is very populous containing many thousand inhabitants
and about (or mostly?) of the other citizens of these before-mentioned counties
and your memorialists consider themselves fully able to bear any expense that
the creation of a new county might expose them to should there be any. Your
memorialists further state that the amended constitution under which your
honorable body are convened provides for the creation of establishment of a
county within the bounds in which they live, and which provisions of the
constitution virtually repeal the Act of Assembly of 1796 on the subject of
the divison of counties but should your honorable body consider it necessary to
have information on that subject they can confidently state that a survey has
been made of which it is ascertained that the requisite number of square miles
are left to those counties before mentioned & that there is the necessary
boundary for a new county without infringing on the rights or convenience of
the citizens of the before mentioned counties. Confiding in whatever you may
see fit to do in the premises your pet~tioners will be satisfied and your
pet~tioners will ever pray etc.
