In the first reading, God promises King
David that his house and his kingdom will
endure forever. It is through Mary’s
“Yes” - “I am the handmaid of the Lord.
Let it be done to me as you say.” - that the
promise finds fulfillment.

1914—2014
In February of 1981, the annual liturgical
celebration commemorating Black History
Month began with St. Mary Church serving
as the host parish for all of the participants
of the western portion of the Diocese.
Deacon Walt and Helen Richardson were
instrumental in bringing this celebration to
our parish.

Daily Mass will be celebrated only at
8:15 a.m. on December 24th and 26th.
Parish Office will be closed

Religious Education will resume on Jan. 4, 2015.
Total Youth Ministry will not meet on Dec. 24 and 31.
TYM will resume on Jan. 14, 2015.
Middle School Youth will not meet on Dec. 21 or 28.

SPIRITUAL BOOK CLUB
Our next book selection will be Rome Sweet Rome by Scott Hahn. Anyone interested in reading and
discussing this selection is welcome. We meet most Fridays at 9:00 a.m. Our first session will be on
Fri., Jan. 16th in the PLC Café. For information contact Mary at 651-1459 by Jan.9th. The Club is
planning to attend the Celebrate Faith: Hearts on Fire event on Jan. 24th to hear keynote speaker and
author Scott Hahn. Registration for this event is required and can be done at www.ptdiocese.org.

Our Lady of Fatima Statue The Fatima statue will be
in the home of Fred & Marie Bergmann this week. Help

First Corinthians:
The Church and the Christian Community
Come learn why St. Paul sees the Church as the Body
of Christ and how his message to the Corinthians is a
much needed message for our own times. Classes will

IMITAR LA DECISIÓN DE MARÍA
El ángel Gabriel hoy le presenta a María un misterio. El misterio de salvación en Cristo no es un misterio que se pueda
resolver, sino una realidad más allá de nuestro entendimiento en la cual nos decidimos a participar. En la liturgia de la Iglesia
Oriental, todos esperan para ver si María participará en el misterio: Dios espera, Adán y Eva y todas las almas de los muertos que
anhelan el Paraíso esperan, los ángeles esperan tener nuevos compañeros celestiales. Y hay gran regocijo cuando su decisión es
un “sí”.
A nosotros se nos ofrecen opciones menos dramáticas, pero el misterio de nuestra salvación en Cristo de ningún modo
queda “solucionado”. Puede que ahora lo entendamos un poco mejor gracias al “sí” de María. Puede que estemos un poco más
cercanos a él mediante la pasión, muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo. Pero un misterio al cual todos debemos dar nuestro
propio “sí”. Ya pronto estaremos cantando “Venid y adoremos”. Que nuestra oración de Adviento, a imitación del “sí” de
María, continúe para que podamos participar en el misterio de nuestra salvación en Jesucristo, Dios-con-nosotros.

A esta Misa se le añade la tradición popular que ha comenzado en el hogar con pesebres,
comidas y regalos. Se nos haría difícil imaginar terminar el año sin la Navidad. Pero el calendario cristiano sólo la ha festejado algunos 1800 años. Los primeros cristianos únicamente
Esta semana celebramos el nacimiento de Jesús, comenzando con la Misa de Gallo. celebraban la Pascua de Resurrección, siguiendo lo que todos los evangelios nos relatan de los eventos de la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Jesús. Sólo Mateo y Lucas mencionan su
nacimiento.
Alrededor del año 200 d.C., los egipcios empezaron a conmemorar el nacimiento de Jesús
el 20 de marzo que era el noveno mes de su calendario. Con el tiempo, la idea de festejar el
nacimiento del Mesías se extendió a otras comunidades cristianas, pero con diversas fechas
como el 19 de abril, el 6 de enero, el 28 de marzo y otras. Fue hasta el siglo cuarto que se fijó
la fecha para el 25 de diciembre, gracias a Juan Crisóstomo y al Papa Julio I. Otras fuentes
señalan que en el año 366 los cristianos comenzaron a celebrar el nacimiento de Cristo, sol de
justicia, precisamente el 25 de diciembre.
En realidad no sabemos cuándo nació Jesús, pero sí sabemos que hay que celebrar el hecho
