The Future of
St. Mary’s Athletics
Inside: Special Graduation Section – Celebrating the Class of 2015
Depending on your years at St. Mary’s, you may have known athletics as a source
of pride or an opportunity for what our parents called “character-building.” The Mighty Turkeys
featured in this magazine demonstrate the best version of both pride in school and achievement
in team building and character. Participation in athletics has never been higher, and the options
for individual and team sports have never been broader. The Class of 2015 includes three athletes
who will play at Division III schools and two athletes who will play at the Division I level. We
have expanded our facilities with the construction of Joy Field at Second Baptist Church and our
partnership with the Racquet Club of Memphis for both tennis and swimming. As you will read in
the following pages, St. Mary’s is focused on fitness, competition, personnel, and facilities. As we
plan for a new gym, wellness center, and dining hall, we are determined to provide the right fit for
athletics within the St. Mary’s mission.
In conversations with parents this year, I have heard a wide array of helpful voices about
St. Mary’s athletics: those advocating for a program no less excellent than our academics; those
recognizing how club sports have changed the landscape of competitive play; those wishing to
preserve the ability of any student to play on a team. The athletic strategy committee of the
board began its work this year and has identified key priorities for having the program and people
in place for the opening of a new athletic center, including the recognition that the individual potential of each girl extends to athletic pursuits. And those pursuits require a new level of flexibility
and focus in staffing, curriculum, and communication.
The mission of St. Mary’s celebrates every girl and creates a culture where excellence is
rewarded, participation is encouraged, and fitness is a lifetime goal for all. We pray every day,
“Keep the students in health of mind and soul and body.” As we build for this healthy future, we are
committed to a community where each girl can
pursue her potential—academically, artistically,
and athletically.

The Future of St. Mary’s Athletics

Time. It’s one of the most important elements of any sporting event —
beating the final buzzer, time out, record-breaking time.
In sports, time is also about strategy: How precious minutes are used.
When to substitute a player. When to engage in a full-court press.
When it comes to the future of athletics at St. Mary’s, the time is now.

T
he past year has brought major changes and improvements to athletic
facilities at St. Mary’s under the leadership of Athletic Director Sandra Pitts.
Turkey tennis and swim teams now have a permanent home at the
Racquet Club of Memphis, thanks to a long-term partnership with the
Racquet Club to provide swimming and tennis facilities for these programs,
as well as tennis coaches and junior development opportunities.
At Joy Field, the final touches, including a pavilion and scoreboard, were
in place for the spring lacrosse season. Joy Field is the result of a partnership
with Second Baptist Church and an extraordinary gift from an alumna of the
school and her family, and is home to both our lacrosse and soccer teams.
Improvements to the track around Southard Field on South Campus
were also completed in the spring, providing track athletes a better facility on
which to train for competition. The track improvements were made possible
through the generosity of two current St. Mary’s families.
Through an innovative partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research
Hospital, anyone in the St. Mary’s community can be a part of a race training
program to promote running and wellness in our community.
Whether you need a training plan for the Memphis St. Jude Marathon or
are new to running, you’re invited to be a part of Team St. Mary’s as we work
and train together to benefit St. Jude. There’s no cost for the training runs or
plans, and there’s no fundraising requirement.
The program is open to both adults and kids
of all ages, and can help prepare you for any

The Bongo Lady’s Guide
to Being the Ultimate Fan
By Sutton MacQueen ’12
Editor’s note: The world knows Malenda Meacham as the Bongo Lady – the energetic Grizzlies fan whose Bongo
Cam performances catapulted her to national attention. Meacham was named the NBA’s 2014 Fan of the Year,
then became a media darling, appearing on ABC’s Good Morning America and other national shows, and being
profiled by the New York Times. At St. Mary’s, we know her as Malenda Meacham, family law attorney, wife of
Rob, and mom to Hannah ‘16 and son Hayden.
Varsity lacrosse coach John Bartholomew joins the athletics
staff as assistant athletic director.
John Bartholomew, varsity lacrosse coach
and director of our lacrosse program for the
last two seasons, joins our staff full-time as
Assistant Athletic Director. John will continue
to oversee our lacrosse program and coach
the varsity team.
Kate Fairless, varsity soccer coach, adds
soccer coordinator to her title, and joins the
Middle School science faculty this fall.
Christine Mudalige, Middle School soccer
and lacrosse coach, joins the Upper School
faculty as a health and fitness instructor.
Christine will continue her Middle School
coaching duties.
Liza Fletcher joins the faculty and staff as
pre-kindergarten teacher (mornings) and
sports information specialist (afternoons). The FedEx Forum. The Grindhouse. The home of the beloved Memphis Grizzlies.
A Mecca for manic Memphis supporters who will show up rain or shine, hell or high water,
to cheer on their hometown heroes. They come to watch the spectacle that is Tony Allen,
to marvel at our All-Star Marc Gasol, and to consistently remind the opposing team that
Mike Conley is the most underrated point guard in the league.
It takes a special kind of fan to
thrive in that atmosphere and to
embrace and embolden the rough
edges of this Memphis team.
Malenda Meacham, affectionately
and nationally known as the Bongo
Lady, is that fan. A season ticket holder
who rose to fame for her energetic playing of the air bongos – better known as
the Bongo Cam – during breaks in the
game, Meacham goes all out to pump
Malenda Meacham, daughter Hannah ‘16, and son Hayden
chat with Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts.
up the crowd at Grizzlies games.
Meacham wasn’t always the super fan we know and love. She didn’t start attending
games until her sports-obsessed son, Hayden, encouraged her. Once seated in the FedEx
Forum, what else can a mom do but embarrass her children by playing air bongos to Gloria
Estafan’s “Conga?” Thus, the Bongo Lady was born.
So how does one become the ultimate fan, according to the Bongo Lady?
Have faith: “Always, ALWAYS, believe in your team.”
Show your team colors: For Meacham, that means dressing in at least one of the
three shades of Grizzlies blue almost every day.
Know your team’s chants, cheers, and songs: Meacham says Grizz fans should
know every single word to “We Don’t Bluff” and to sing those words at the top of their
lungs at every opportunity. (Turkey fans, this means you need to know the words and
actions for “Let Me See Your Turkey Trot”.)
Adore your team mascot: Meacham is adamant that Grizz is, in fact, the best
mascot in the NBA.
Get your head in the game: “Always have a pregame ritual to help seal the victory,” says Meacham, who says a pregame ritual is as important for the fans as it is for the
athletes.
In all of her super-fan glory, Meacham reminds us that the most important part of
being a Grizzlies or Turkey fan is to show off as much energy as is humanly possible and
“never underestimate where you can go in life playing instruments.”

In a League of Their Own
By Zina Kumok ‘07
Savannah Ostner ‘17 and Mr. Crometastic.
B
eyond the usual school-sponsored sports offerings at
St. Mary’s, there’s a whole other group of athletes who
hone their craft outside of school – from the stage to the
riding ring. It takes a special level of dedication to compete at
a sport that requires hours of practice, weekends full of travel,
and commitments that take students away from school and
their social life.
Savannah Ostner ’17 participates in horse reining, a
Western-style competition in which riders guide their horses
through a precise pattern of circles, spins, and stops. Ostner
missed 20 days of school in her second semester of 9th grade
and 13 days in the first semester of 10th grade traveling to
competitions. Her time in the saddle paid off: Ostner, riding Mr.
Crometastic, was crowned the 2014 National Reining Horse
Association Champion in the youth 14-18 division.
Audrey Muscari ’16 said she spends about 20-25 weekends
a year showing horses, which requires a lot of out-of-town
travel. She also competes at the Germantown Charity Horse
Show, where she presided as a princess this year.

For Ballet Memphis ballerina MacKenzie Campbell ’16, an
average week means 11 hours practicing ballet, while busier
weeks require up to 35 hours of work. Campbell spends
summer training in other cities. Last year it was New York, this
summer it’s Philadelphia.
Despite their dedication to their sports and the time
spent on the road or at the barre, the girls still find time to be
involved in a variety of activities at St. Mary’s.
Ostner is part of the Belles Lettres staff, National Beta Club,
and National Latin Honors Society. She participated in the
TMTA math competition this year and is involved in the youth
group at her church.
Muscari is a member of the St. Mary’s trap team, president
of the Financial Literacy Club, and treasurer of the Art Club.
Campbell is co-chair of the Middle School Committee of the
St. Mary’s Community Fund (her second year in that position).
She also served as Junior Class treasurer, a peer tutor for
The Write Place, a mathlete, and a member of the Cum
Laude Society.
MacKenzie Campbell ’16 performs with the Ballet Memphis School.
The girls credit the teachers and administration at
St. Mary’s for supporting their dreams by allowing them to
work ahead, catch up when they return from competitions,
and stay in the loop.
“I am lucky that the teachers are
encouraging of my sport as well as
understanding when I must travel
and miss school for horse shows,”
Muscari said.
Campbell said having a different
schedule from her fellow students
means making difficult choices, like
not going out on the weekends. But
seeing former Turkeys who have
participated in ballet reminds her why
she’s made that decision.
“I like to say that ballet and
school are both my top priority,”
she said.
These three students aren’t the only ones competing
outside of school; there are many others. For example, Abby
Baskind ’17 rides hunter-jumpers and jumpers, while Tashi Wischmeyer ’17 practices taekwondo.
Mary Elise O’Brien ’16 plays competitive volleyball. Maire Sweeney
’16 does Irish dancing and Mallory
MacDonald ’18 is an equestrienne.
Even though she doesn’t wear
the blue and white of St. Mary’s
when she dances, Campbell said
she’s always a Turkey.
“In performance I realize that I
represent not only the Ballet Memphis School but also St. Mary’s, so
it is almost impossible for me to
separate my commitment to ballet
from my commitment to SMS,”
Campbell said.
Audrey Muscari ‘16 was both a competitor and a princess at this year’s
Germantown Charity Horse Show.

Alumnae athletes reflect on winning,
losing, and lessons learned
By Anna Ranson
Olympian Mary Lou Retton once said, “A trophy carries dust. Memories last forever.” Retton’s statement certainly
rings true for St. Mary’s athletes who went on to play at the college level. We asked a few of our alumnae athletes
to reflect on their favorite high school sports moments, and the lessons they learned through competition.

Literacy Center Honors Former Head Of School
O
ne of the most recent programs at St. Mary’s is the
Nathaniel C. Hughes Learning Center, which offers North
Campus students – and girls and boys from other schools – the
opportunity to enhance their reading and literacy skills.
The Hughes Learning Center, named for former Head
of School Nathaniel Hughes, is made possible through a
generous gift from Ashley Moore Remmers ’72, for whom
Dr. Hughes was a transformational figure. Opening this year
as the expansion of the reading and literacy program that has
long been a part of our summer Pursuits offerings, the Hughes
Learning Center will grow to offer reading remediation and
learning enrichment programs throughout the school year, for
both St. Mary’s students and those from other schools.
Laura Hutton, formerly part of the 1st grade teaching
team, is the director of the Hughes Learning Center. Over the
last three years, Hutton has worked to build a summer reading

the Annual Fund to over $1 million for the 2014-2015 school year
- the first time in St. Mary’s history the Fund
reached that milestone.

Retiring
After 19 years
of guiding
St. Mary’s students through
the college
application
process, Mimi
Grossman is
retiring as the
director of
college counseling. Grossman joined the
St. Mary’s community in 1996, coming
from White Station High School, where
she was the first-ever college advisor
in the Memphis City Schools. She has
served on the review committees for the
National Merit Scholarship Corporation
and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation,
among others, and is currently on the
counselor advisory boards of the University of Alabama, Samford University, and
Birmingham-Southern College. Grossman
has been an active member of the National Association for College Admission
Counseling (NACAC) and the Southern
Association for College Admission
Counseling (SACAC).
Judy Nokes is retiring as a Junior Kindergarten teacher after 18 years at St. Mary’s.
During that time, she has helped lay the
educational foundation for hundreds of
girls. Her enthusiasm for teaching her
students was evident each day in her
classroom where
learning came
alive at every turn.
Her love of math,
literature, art,
and storytelling
could be found in
every aspect of her
teaching.
Dr. Patti Person Ray ’65 is retiring as head
of the Upper School. When Dr. Ray ’65 was
named Upper School Head 15 years ago,
she was the first alumna administrator in
the school’s
history. After
a total of
40 years in
education,
including 27
years as an
administrator, Dr. Ray
graduated
her last class
of seniors this
spring. She
introduced and shaped the Upper School’s
modern curriculum, schedule, student life,
facilities, and faculty. Dr. Ray’s impact on
education extends beyond St. Mary’s. She
was the founding principal of Cordova
High School and was the first female high
school principal in the modern Shelby
County School system. Dr. Ray teaches at
Union University, Memphis Teacher Residency, and the Online School for Girls.

Maker Culture Goes On Display
This spring, students on the North Campus demonstrated how the maker mindset comes to work - and play - at St. Mary’s.
In April, Kindergarten girls showcased their maker skills for parents
and guests at the Early Childhood Tinker Fair. The girls spent the
morning moving from station to station, hammering nails, twisting
wires, building 3D models, using hot glue guns, and chiseling wood.
Proper safety procedures were followed at each activity. The Tinker Fair
coincided with the last day of Kid Town, the annual Senior Kindergarten
project that sees girls manage and shop at fictional businesses.
The Lower School Maker Faire was held in early May. All girls in 1st-4th grades participated both as
attendees and activity leaders. The gym was set up with tables featuring a range of activities, such as
building a Rube-Goldberg-style marble track, using a soldering iron to complete a circuit, and even
playing life-size Angry Birds! The event also featured maker-themed speakers and presentations.

OUTSTANDING ALUMNA
Outstanding Alumna 2015:
Lisa Francis Turner ’78
By Kathryn Carpenter Swords ’83
20 |
W
hen Lisa Turner first heard she had
been chosen as Outstanding Alumna
2015, she was taken aback. “I was
convinced she had called the wrong person!”. It
is no surprise to those who know her, though,
as she embodies the qualities that make her an
obvious choice.
Turner has worked tirelessly and joyfully
in her life of service and leadership not only
as an alumna, a sister, daughter, wife, and
mother, but also as a professional through her
work for 32 years at Independent Presbyterian
Church, where she currently serves as Director
of Congregational Life. She has served as a
member of the St. Mary’s Alumnae Board and as
chair of the Annual Fund. She is compassionate,
confident, humble, energetic, a leader and
mentor. And, as a wonderful added bonus, she is
very funny.
As a student, Turner was President of the
M Club, photographer for the Carillon, a multisport athlete (soccer, basketball, volleyball, and
softball), and a member of the Twelve Year Club.
Her mother Ruth Kelly Francis ’51, sister Molly
Francis Roberts ’80, and daughter Kelly ’08 all
hold close ties to St. Mary’s.
After St. Mary’s, Turner received a B.A.
in Education from Vanderbilt University. “I
graduated on a Friday and came to work on
a Monday, May 1982,” she explains. “John
Sartelle, who was the Minister at Independent
Presbyterian for 27 years, hired me. I’ve worked
at IPC in all sort of different capacities over
the years.”
During this time she married Buster Turner.
“When I was pregnant with Kelly we were
given the devastating news Buster had chronic
leukemia. In 1990, when Kelly, was just 11
months old, he passed away from complications
of a bone marrow transplant. I was by his side
and read him Isaiah 40:31 and thanked him for
loving us and told him his love would be with us
for a lifetime.” These experiences, coupled with
her deep faith, help her reach out to others also
experiencing such difficult times.
Turner continued her work at IPC where she
coordinated special events, conferences, and
retreats. “Currently I’m working on their 50th
anniversary,” she adds as she starts to laugh,
“which just so happens to be the same weekend
as the St. Mary’s reunion weekend.” She has
organized and participated in mission trips to
Africa, Mexico, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Scotland,
and other locations. “Some were medical trips,
and I would help by entertaining people’s
children while the parents were being treated.”
During all of these projects, she squeezed in
a Masters in Theological Studies from Reformed
Theological Seminary.
A favorite among the many programs Turner
organizers is her work with Camp DeSoto and
the Palmer Home for Children. Palmer Home
is a residential care facility for children in
crisis; Turner is a Palmer House board member.
“The mission of Palmer Home for Children is
to present the hope of Christ to children who,
through lack of adequate family structure, are in
need of a permanent, long-term, Christ-centered
home.”
She has directed a specially tailored summer
camp at DeSoto for the Palmer Home children for
21 years. “IPC rents Camp Desoto and takes kids
from church and from Palmer Home for a fullblown, all-out camp with crafting, rafting on the
Ocoee River, etcetera.”
All in the St. Mary’s family: Lisa with alumnae family members: sister Molly
Francis Roberts ’80, mother Ruth Kelly Francis ’51, and daughter Kelly Turner ’08.
Turner may have been surprised to be chosen
as the 2015 Outstanding Alumna, but it is clear
that she was a natural choice for the honor,
given the lives she has touched over her years of
outreach, the smiles she has put on the faces of
children through her work, and the contagious
energy and the laughter that she spreads
every day.

Punk Aycock Davidson ’57 has
been busy with several happy
occasions lately. She and her
husband spent their fiftieth
anniversary celebration in New
Orleans with the whole family.
In addition to that, they are
looking forward to the arrival of
a grandchild soon. The Davidsons
remain active in the Daffodil
Society and were proud of the
success of the National Daffodil
Show in Memphis. Kitty Perry
Taylor ’53 is planning a trip to
the Buckhorn Inn. She enjoys
helping her friends there with
the beautiful gardens. She was
so pleased to get the cookbook
written by Anne LaVesque
Johnston Dalton ’53 which was
filled with photos of Annie’s
Arkansas home. Anne Perry
Stamps ’57 is still busy as can be
with her art work in Pensacola.
Look for her work under the
name Anne Beverley if you go to
the Coast. She has many different
kinds of beach works from
paintings to pillows. Iolis Robbins
Carruthers ’48 is enjoying all of
the activities at Trezevant Manor.
She loves being there with so
many of the St. Mary’s ladies.
Adele Wolf Grilli ’57 plans to
retire this year after many years
at Lyon College in Batesville,
Ark. It was sad news to hear
that Adele’s sister Florence was
killed in a car wreck in Memphis
recently. It was great to compare
notes with Sarah Loaring-Clark
Flowers ’47. Mary Joy Prichard
Knowlton ’57 was busy planning
a big family celebration. Her
twin grandchildren James and

Our class may be small, but it is
definitely busy. Carolyn Bullard
is thrilled with her brand-new
titanium hip! She had the surgery
in February, and returned to work
in March! “My recovery has been
so easy and quick,” she writes.
“It’s wonderful to be able to walk
without pain or limping! My
smarty pants colleagues will no
longer be able to call me HopAlong! My physical therapist, a
beautiful woman named Maya,
says I am an A-plus student.
When I attend the wonderful
Fort Worth Opera Festival in May,
I will be able to sit comfortably
through every opera. Believe it or
not, sitting used to be the hardest thing to do.” Nancy Whitlock
Hubbs is still working full time
with her Child Welfare kids. She
is busy transitioning her developmentally delayed kids early
into the adult care system. They
used to keep the severe cases
until age 21, but they are now
moving them at about 18. No big
trips since last November. Nancy
and her husband recently cruised
to the Panama Canal again. The
next cruise will take place when
the leaves change color starting
in Montreal and cruising down
to Boston. It is a get together
with old college friends. Nancy
and her husband may travel to
Europe next June when they have
a Vienna reunion...where Nancy
went 50 years ago on her junior
year abroad. Nancy was able to
recently visit her younger sister,
Suzanne Whitlock Floyd ’65 in
Gulfport. Suzy is almost back to
normal after fighting bone cancer.
Beth Whitlock Peterson (Nancy’s
twin sister) and her husband Lee
rented a house in The Villages,
Florida this winter to get out of
the coldest part of winter and to
have an adventure!! “I was sad
to hear of the death of Patricia
Waddell Smith’s brother, Duke
Waddell in February. Pat and her
son Dylan were in Memphis for
Duke’s funeral. Pat wrote that he
had been dealing with kidney
disease for a long time. A sad
time, but great to have the family all together. Pat is planning
to be in Santa Barbara for a few
weeks after Easter to catch up
with friends and get some sun.
Judy Lawrence McKay says this
has been a busy year for her but
nothing big just trying to keep up
with five grandchildren (all boys
ages one through twelve) and lots
of short trips. Right now she and
her husband are getting ready to
plant at home and at the farm.

More than half of our class came
for our 50th reunion, which
turned out to be a day of laughter
and happy nostalgia. The eight
of us strode through the old
cafeteria (almost exactly the
same as we remember) and took
our place in the sanctuary (also
the same, although we were now
without chapel caps) for Chapel
and wondered if we would be the
oldest ones there. And we were,
almost! Those who came included
Cathy Hoover Allen, our class organizer who lived up to her senior

Sweany Bertram, who confessed
to being less than studious in
high school but later made up for
it by earning her M.D. at Vanderbilt University and who continues
in the practice; Susan Hoefer

husband Brad can spend most of
the year at their Montana dream
home; Sally Pace Gingras, who
recently closed her architectural
firm after 30 years of designing
homes in Palm Beach, Fla., where
she lives when not in Montana;
Marion West Hammer, who is
reducing her teaching load to
allow for more grandchild visits;
Joyce Burkett Scruggs, who won
the “coming from a long distance”
award, had just put her house on
the market in Cave Creek, Ariz.
She and husband Dan might
move back to Memphis. Julia
Malone came from Washington,
D.C., where she continues to work
part-time for a public relations
company, loves photography,
captains a tennis team and (as
of last week) raises a new puppy.
One very important member of
our class didn’t have to come to
reunion. Patti Person Ray was
already at St. Mary’s hard at work
as Head of the Upper School even
on reunion day, which included a
special recognition of her contribution to St. Mary’s and education
in Shelby County. As we all know,

Susan Hoefer Foster, Sally Pace Gingras, Marion West Hammer, Julia Malone, Patti Person Ray,
Kathy Sweany Bertram, Joyce Burkett Scruggs, and Cathy Hoover Allen.
Patti Person Ray is retiring from
her post at the end of the school
year. She will remain active in
education, including teaching
her innovative exchange course,
which allows St. Mary’s students
to converse with students in
other counties. Patti gave her
classmates a tour of the new St.
Mary’s, whose facilities are truly
eye-popping compared to those
we had back in the day. Examples:
a library with a fireplace and soft
seating that students can move
around; more science labs than
we could count; a 3-D printing
lab where two incredibly poised
9th graders showed us how they
are building robots that toss and
receive balls; a music room and
a choral arts room. What has not
changed, we were happy to hear,
is the informality and friendliness
of the school. Students smiled
and welcomed us warmly. As we
visited the middle school, a fifth
grader asked Patti, “Are you going to show them our 5th grade
commons?” because she was so
proud of the room, which is lined
in wood-paneled lockers and has
upholstered seating. The Class
of ’65 ended their reunion day
at Interim restaurant, where we
28 |
had a private room that spared
the other diners of the gales
of laughter as we reviewed our
senior year annual and read old
Tatler newspapers and pooled
our memories of teachers, May
Day dance costumes, and our 9th
grade trip to Washington. Cathy
read a message from Ellen Rumsey Bellenot reminiscing about 12
years at St. Mary’s. “I didn’t really
care for quite as much school as
they dished out,” Ellen wrote in
a long missive. “So Mother and
Grandmother let me stay home
about once a week to have a Stop
Day to do whatever it was I was
interested in, playing with my old
Spencer microscope or reading
Dickens or drawing. St. Mary’s allowed me to do that and my life’s
the richer for it.” Toward the end
of her very long email, Ellen said,
“If brevity’s the soul of wit, I’ve
dropped that watermelon. But I’ve
had a good time writing this.”
Ellen, who credits St. Mary’s and
geographical distribution for getting her into Scripps College in
California, is an artist and lives
“with my favorite husband
Steven,” in Tallahassee. She is still,
as she was chosen in 1965, the
“wittiest” member of our class.

In early December all of us
local girls met at Lynn Bledsoe
Buhler’s for an elegant luncheon
to visit with each other and
especially Lee McGeorge Durrell
while she was in town. She is
pleased that after months of
preparation her U.S. tax-exempt
status, the Durrell Wildlife Trust
is now in operation. Lynn is
proud of “our very own and very
clever Margaret Barton of the
interior design firm Margaret
Barton Designs” for completely
redoing her upstairs bedroom.
Now “everyone is invited to
spend the night.” Jean Stitt Otto
has embarked on a “new era”
after retiring from critical care
nursing in December by spending
3 months at her and husband
Tom’s active retirement community condo in Green Valley,
Ariz., just 20 miles south of
Tucson. Tom enjoys photography,
and Jean joined the hiking club,
which pushed her to scramble to
the top of a local peak, Elephant
Head, a feat that she says she
would not have accomplished
without the club’s training and
encouragement. She and Tom
returned home outside Seattle
in early April, but they plan to
continue traveling and may even
get to Memphis. Wouldn’t that be
fun for us! Maybe stay in Lynn’s
redone bedroom? Shelley Smith
has also retired by closing her
day-to-day litigation practice, but
she still does occasional mediation/arbitration and serves as
special counsel for those who do
not like the courtroom, allowing
her to travel to Japan and South
Africa, spend a month in Maine
and Florida, and take shorter
jaunts including a trip to Santa
Fe last July for Kappa Kappa
Gamma’s reunion. She now has
a standard poodle, her constant
companion, and focuses on wellness rather than weight, enjoying
her family including husband,
two sons, and daughter-in-law.
Lynn Clark White took a family
trip, including husband Jon, two
daughters and their guys, to San
Francisco, down the California
coast on Route 1 to L.A., on to the
North Rim of the Grand Canyon
and finally to Zion National Park.
She highly recommends hiking
the Narrows at Zion and loved
the beauty of looking down at the
Grand Canyon and up at Zion.
Like Shelley, she is also training
her beautiful standard poodle
puppy, including “middle of the
night pee outings!!” Jeannie
Whitman Esdaile, like Lynn B.,
has been remodeling by adding a
new room for her piano. She still
plays the organ at two churches
and sings in the local choir. Her
job with James Purdey and Sons
has changed to running the retail
operation in the West End, something she knows “how to do and
finds much more fun!” She and
husband Christopher plan to host
sister Nancy Whitman Manire ’64,
son Robert and his wife Marion,
and hopefully other family in
the coming year, but meanwhile
they enjoy Christopher’s grand-
sons, great nephews and niece,
“all under 7 and very funny.”
Jan Patrick enjoyed lunch with
Debbie Boehme Salter when
Debbie came to Nashville with
daughter Elizabeth and granddaughter Elyse while son-inlaw Jesse coached 3 basketball
games. “Deb and Jan laughed as
they realized they were amazed
by every little thing Elyse did!”
Debbie now has a new grandson,
Mason Cromer McMillan, born in
February. Our ever cheerful cancer
survivor Susan McNeely Nicholas
is stable with no new activity of
cancer cells after a short round
of radiation in January and
February. Lastly, I reconnected
through email with Suzanne
Brescia Cochran’s daughter
Emily Cochran ’97, who lives in
Nashville and works at the business school at Vanderbilt. She
sent pictures of herself with boyfriend Will and niece and nephew
Suzy Marie (named for Suzanne)
and Wally as well as a picture of
sister Elizabeth Cochran Hill ’95
with her family.

Thank you to all of you who sent
me news. I know that we tend to
think that our own lives are not
“class newsworthy,” but we are all
interested in what our St. Mary’s
classmates are doing. Please
continue to send me news! Elinor
Baker Jones stays busy working
with her design business and
helping with her five grandchildren – two year-old triplets, a
three-year-old and a nine-monthold baby. Elinor, you could run
your own daycare… Not! Elinor
is also doing some work with
renovation projects at her church
in Atlanta. She is happy that her
mother is able to fly frequently
from Memphis for family events.
Holly Rogers is still working full
time and is on the board of her

improving the commuter traffic
situation, which makes driving

a mess right now. Orlando is the
vacation capital of the country!
Carolyn Mayo stays really busy
in her retirement. She is slowly
moving in to her newly renovated
condo in Germantown. She says
this is her LAST move! Carolyn
volunteers for MIFA and is planning on helping at the Germantown Animal Shelter. She was
recently appointed to a three-year
term on the Carnival Memphis
Board of Directors and is a new
member of Les Passées. Carolyn
went to Key West last spring
and will be traveling to Australia
and New Zealand in November.
Carolyn is thrilled that she will
be a great-aunt in September. Her
niece’s baby will be the first baby
born into her immediate family
in over 30 years. Her nephew
will be getting married next
year. Mary Helene Lee Hamlin is
another busy retiree. She retired
and remarried several years ago.
She started doing some volunteer
work which led to her starting a
nonprofit, the Pass Job Connection. This group assists people
with their job search activities.
Once a week they host the Pass
Job Club in the morning and work
with the inmates at the county
jail in the afternoon. She also
works with several drug recovery
facilities helping their clients.
Mary Helene also has a two-yearold granddaughter. I am enjoying
my retirement, although I have
not settled in to a regular schedule yet… but, do I need a schedule? I have been substituting at
St. Mary’s a lot and also subbing
as a reading coach at an inner city
school. Once a week I volunteer in
the library at my granddaughter’s
school. Once a month my retired
teacher friends from St. Mary’s get
together for lunch. We also have a
book club. I have also been able to
help out a lot with my grandchildren if they are sick, have a snow
day, or holiday. Last December I
had a dog walking accident. I was
walking my golden doodle, Nicholas. As we were walking along a
muddy sidewalk, Nicholas saw a
squirrel and down I went! I broke
my wrist, and had a cast for seven
weeks. My older granddaughters
helped me wrap presents and fix
Christmas dinner. It was an oldfashioned Christmas. Hank and
I will be going to the mountains
near Blowing Rock, N.C. in August
with our supper group. In the
spring we are going to Hawaii
with some friends.

She will be traveling to Mexico in
the near future for a trip and we
pray that all we will go well for
her! Jean Phillips Lorton reports
that there is nothing new on
the Lorton home front. They are
doing well as are her daughters
and their families! Our son, Scott
Williams is a Juvenile Probation
Officer in Harrisburg, Ark. and is
finding the job enlightening and
he enjoys working in the different
area courts. Our daughter, Ellen
LeVaughn Kowalchuk ’96 and her
family and mother-in -law decided to drive a RV to Yellowstone
Park from Rapid City, S.D. They
had a fantastic time touring this
beautiful part of the country. I recently returned from a trip to S.D.

and after one hour of diagramming sentences, decided I needed
to return immediately to elementary school for much needed refresher classes! I also met our son

grandparents are looking forward
to watching this little one grow
and loving him along the way.
Susan says she now understands
why new grandparents have
to pull out a satchel of pics to
show whenever someone asks
about the new arrival. Linda
Stratton Hancock writes and
Cary attended their niece Erin’s
wedding in Austin, Texas and
enjoyed family time together.
She continues to enjoy working
with Dr. Ryu who assumed Dr.
Lyle’s dental practice. Linda lost
her father in February. Mr. Leslie
Stratton will always be remembered as “dancingest Dad” at the
Father- Daughter banquet. Bette
Gordon writes that she waited
until the last possible minute to
send in her news because she
wanted to report on the 45th class
reunion. ‘Fantastic’ is the only
word she could use to describe
the weekend. Bette also reported
that she traveled to Paris (the one
in France) and the Loire Valley
on the St. Mary’s Alumnae trip
in March. Fabulous! The trip was
such a success that another trip
(to Italy) is being planned for
2017. Bette still works at St. Jude
Children’s Hospital, loves her
job, but is headed to Crater of
Diamonds State Park in Arkansas
with the hope of finding a big
enough diamond that she can
retire someday. She sends her
thanks to all who attended and
helped with the reunion and
her love to all who were missed.
Gigi Gould is looking forward to
becoming a grandmother to Lily,
daughter of her son Louis, and Jill.
Hats off to Gigi and the entire St.
Mary’s staff for the best Alumnae
Weekend ever! The only way
to top it would be to have 100%
participation for our 50th reunion
so mark your calendars now for
the last weekend in April 2020!
Betty Coe Cruzen Manuel reports
that the Memphis ZTA Alumnae
Chapter recently honored her
Mother for 75 years of membership. Betty Coe and husband
David enjoy life in Springfield,
Mo., where David serves as
President of Drury University,
and Betty Coe is a lovely first
lady. Peg Dixon and precious pup
Annie live in Louisville, where she
supports animal rescue organizations. She fosters rescued dogs
and puppies by helping them find
forever homes, and administers
fund-raising auctions for abused
dogs. Lynn Schadt Thomas and
husband, Bill, are spending a
lot of fun times in Florida. Son,
Christopher, is traveling in South
America. Susie Hudson had a
wonderful time visiting western Canada aboard the Rocky
Mountaineer Train! She traveled
from Vancouver to Jasper! Way
to go Susie! The 45th reunion
was fun from beginning to end!
During the weekend I learned
that Ruthie Stratton Samaha and
husband, Joe are enjoying their
six grandchildren and are awaiting two more. Kathy Baker Penn
and husband, Bob, are awaiting their first granddaughter.
Denise DuBois Taylor’s son Will
(Princeton ’14) is now at Brown
University working on his Ph.D.
in astroparticle physics. Husband
Sledge is traveling extensively
this year as Chairman of the
National Cotton Council while
Denise enjoyed a “sibling week”
with her two brothers in Paris in
June. A special treat included seeing Mrs. Presh Gill, Kathy’s dear
Mom, and Mrs. Rachel Martin,
two of our former teachers. Other
classmates who attended our
reunion included Carroll Reese
Craft, Mary Edna Parish, Elaine
Summers Travis, Charlotte
Turner Peck, Susan Cooley,
Elizabeth Kenworthy Farrar,
and Andrea Holmes Lugar. Your
loyal secretary is on the move
again with husband, Andrew to
Newport, R.I. where he will be
a Professor of National Security
Affairs at the Naval War College
in Newport. Daughter, Chelsea
is completing her Master’s at
Cambridge and will begin her
doctorate at Oxford in the fall. We
loved seeing all who could join
us at our 45th reunion, and we
certainly missed those who could
not be with us! We all really look
forward to the upcoming 50th!!

Deborah Abernathy is going into
her second year as executive director for Main Street. Right now
they are sponsoring an art popup shop featuring local artists.
Deborah says it really is fun to
come up with ideas and festivals
for downtown. She visited Atlanta
for the national convention and
saw some college friends. Julia
Sprunt Grumbles says that she
and Bill are doing what every
other retired couple does…lots
of travel, visiting family and his
three grandsons, playing mahjong, enjoying a couples book
club, and sleeping past 6:30 am.
Living in Chapel Hill is “incredible
because of the interesting people,
walking distance to sports, performing arts, lectures and theater
with little to no traffic and surrounded by lots of young people.”
As I write this, I am preparing for
my association’s 21st Training
Conference on Impaired Driving.
I am completing my 28th year at
the International Association of
Chiefs of Police. When I joined, I
was one of the youngest. Now I
am among the top 4-5 of the oldest! Husband Chris and I took our
annual ski trip in Lake Tahoe, so
I guess I’m still young enough to
keep from falling. Jan Carruthers
Sturdivant attended Christie
Stratton Moody’s glass art show
in April at Christian Brothers
University. Also there were
Nancy Johnson Foster and Avery
Malone Kaserman. Catherine
Dailey Berger, Julia Henry Archer,
Susan Williford Montgomery,
Deborah Abernathy, Bond Nunn
Moore and Happy Stratton
Heckle regretfully already had
other plans. Jan also had dinner
with Ann Vandeventer Ince
one evening afterwards. Jean

care of her dad, also sends her
regards. All are doing well.

The Class of 1972 is having a great
time with their animals and families. Jackie Pentz Watkins said:
“We recently rescued a 10-yearold Yorkie with health issues from
an older couple and are in the
process of getting Precious situated with our other fur-babies. All’s
quiet on the travel front as we
haven’t cruised in a year, opting
for DisneyWorld last December
and attending the Dallas Comic
Convention in May.” Musette
Sprunt Morgan wrote, “My
husband is retired so we split our
time in a few places, but mostly
love being home in Memphis.
Daughter Musette Morgan ’03
continues her art career in NYC
and son Worth is running for
City Council District 5 here in
Memphis so I am rolling up my
sleeves to be in the back office of
his campaign– All are welcome to
join!! Take care!!!” Karen Adelson
Strauss wrote, “I am still in
Conn., with Mom in Memory Care
Facility nearby. With children in
Minneapolis, Park City, and Haifa,
I’ve got some great traveling to do
in the coming months. Anybody
coming to Boston or NYC, I am 90
minutes away, so would love to
see you!” Several of the 1972ers
went to Ashley Moore Remmers’
wedding where we tried to
conjure up our 7th grade selves
from the Harpeth Hall/St. Mary’s
basketball game talent show. We all donned blue feather boas
and danced to Carla Thomas’
“B-A-B-Y”. We wished Barbara
Cook, Kate Wilson, and Mandy
Richards had been there to choreograph and direct the chorus.
I really enjoyed several months
of retirement and now have accepted a part-time position at
Calvary Church as Coordinator of
Community Ministries where we
focus on poverty issues, women’s
missions, and children’s concerns.
If you want to get involved in one
of Calvary’s many service opportunities, please call me . . . or
I know Musette would appreciate
a call if you could help her with
Worth’s campaign. Does anyone
feel moved to take on this role of
Class Secretary? Come on, girls
. . . please. The Class of ’72 is so
proud of Ashley Moore Remmers
who has given a 3-year matching
grant to any class achieving over
50% participation in annual fund
participation. If you haven’t sent

Bron Gayna Schmit and her
mother have taken on the HUGE
task of updating their house and
says it’s like getting a face lift,
teeth whitening, and liposuction
all at the same time!!!!! Deborah
Caldwell Halvis has big news...
she’s retired!! After working at
her 1st job as a Nature Counselor
at Camp Merry Acres with dear
Mrs. Betty when she was 16, she
is now officially retired at 60! And
she loves spending unstructured
time with husband Jim and their
three grandchildren– Olivia 7,
Luka 5, and Leo 16 months. Her
family went to St.Lucia in May to
celebrate. Molly Hudson Calvo
has been retired for about two
years and enjoys having more
time to read. Last summer, she
returned to volunteer tutoring
with the Nashville Adult Literacy
Council. Her parents are both
86, and she spends a good bit
of her time with them. Sarah
Peeples Hodges is either going to
Mongolia or Tunisia this summer.
Ginger Hicks Smith celebrated
38 years working in the library at
Emory University. At some point,
she counted up all the work titles
she’s had over the years and the
total was 18. Currently, she works
with the library’s communications, events, and exhibitions. She
continues to serve as President of
the Delta Delta Delta Foundation.
From time to time, Ginger and
her sister Janie Hicks Jeter ’69 get
together for dinner with Cathy
Wilson LaMon, Lawrie Canale
Peyton, and Bron Gayna Schmit
and catch up on Cathy’s real
estate business, Lawrie’s work
at Camp Riva-Lake, and Bron
Gayna’s unending adventures as
an elementary school principal.
Milner Stanton is getting back
in the tennis scene- playing on a
USTA team. She’s also playing lots
of bridge and is also planning a
trip to Scandinavia and Russia in
July. Judith Jay reports she has a
job, decent health and a wonderful husband. She also has a
boatload of cats, a few dogs, a few
goats and a few horses. Although
Virginia Withers Buchanan
stopped teaching a couple of
years ago to be a consultant, this
year she returned to St. Andrews
to help out with the math curriculum in the Lower School. When
some of the teachers had the
idea to name their home rooms
she told them about “Murddie’s
Birdies” and “Garrison’s Gorillas.”
Anne Armour-Jones got married
on March 28 to Chuck Morgret,
a retired aerospace engineer.
They’re honeymooning this summer on an Alaskan cruise. She
also rescued a pug, Calpurnia,
from a puppy mill. Callie is finally
learning to be a dog and not a
breeding machine.

At the writing of these class
notes, a tragedy has occurred that
has shaken our class to the bone.
We collaboratively agreed that
this was not a time for sharing
our news, it pales unequivocally
to the news we received and feelings we are sharing as a group.
Our Anna Puckett Paccone lost
her daughter, Alexandra Paccone, who was killed on March
16 in a car accident. We choose to
honor Anna with our silence and
reverence. Alex was only twenty
years old. If you read what all her
friends say about her, you find
that she was dearly loved and
respected. She had many talents,
and one of the finest ones was inclusion of all kinds of folks. Most
of us never had the pleasure of
knowing her, few of us have been
able to spend time with Anna
over the years, but our sisterly
love remains strong. She has spoken over the years in our notes
about her Alex proudly. We stand
in silence to honor our friend; I
know you will all understand.

The Class of 1975 had a blast
celebrating their 40th reunion
on Alumnae Weekend. We had a
great turnout and really enjoyed
laughing at high school stories
and catching up on what has
gone on in our lives since. Betsy
Olim and Stevy Levy hosted us for
dinner at their home on Friday
night after the cocktail party
at the school. Thanks to them
and to all our Memphis-based
classmates who brought all the
delicious food. On Saturday night
Angie Rose and her husband Lou
Kerns hosted a fabulous party at
Lou’s design studio downtown.
Other activities were a brunch
in Overton Square (we were
thrilled to see it looking even
better than it did in its (and our)
heyday in the 70s), receiving the
trophy at Friday’s luncheon for
the only class so far to have 100%
participation in alumnae giving
3 years in a row, and a discussion about our establishment of
a scholarship fund in memory
of our classmate Dianne Hill.

Well, we have two more women
joining the “Empty Nester” Club!
Jack Mullins, son of Kim Brown
Mullins, will begin his college career this fall at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg,
Va. His sister, Carson ’12, will be a
senior there as well. They are so
excited to be at the same school!
“It makes a mother’s heart kind
of mushy to know the babies
will be together!” (I think so too!)
Kim helped coach the incredible
St. Mary’s Mock Trial Team this
spring. The team came in 1st in
Shelby County, and went on to
finish in 2nd place in the Tennessee State tournament in Nashville. She loved working with the
girls! Kim also found time to help
the indefatigable Lisa Morrow
Morten with Alumnae Weekend.
It was a yippee-ki-o-ki-aye fun
time! Once again, a big thank
you to Lisa and her team for all
of their hard work! Kaky Ossorio
Wingfield’s boys, Will and Michael are graduating in June then
headed to University of Texas at
Austin in the fall. They will NOT
be living together though. Finally
some non brother time! In anticipation of echoing walls around
her house, Kaky began substitute
teaching at a pre-school this year
and has loved being a part of little
people’s lives again. (Amen, I love
my little ones too!) John Barton,
son of Julie Davidson Barton, got
his Master’s degree in Accountancy in January and went to
work for Pope Asset Management
in March! Julie is still working for
Lisa Mallory. The shop has moved
to Ella’s space in the Chickasaw

the shop! Love to all! –1977

Bama, it’s been fun to follow the
Tide. Palmer Thomason Jones
has also caught the football bug
cheering on the Razorbacks of the
University of Arkansas. Daughter
Sarah is a student there and very
happy. Palmer’s daughter Mia
attends Grace St. Luke’s school.
The high school search is coming
soon! Adele Orgill Wellford’s
daughter Liza will be teaching
JK at St. Mary’s and will also be
the sports coordinator. Liza has
been a Kindergarten teacher
at Promise Academy, a charter
school in Memphis. Liza will be a
fantastic addition to SMS! Barbara
Cape O’Brien’s son Edward is
making a college choice too and
Barbara thinks it will be an SEC
school. Daughter Brandon ’09 has
moved to NYC and is working in
the marketing department for an
event planning company. Barbara
thanks Val Hoyt for helping Brandon in the job search. Val says
that Brandon is exceptional and
that it was a pleasure. Val is celebrating 25 years at Christie’s! Well
done, Val, we all knew you would
do something fabulous. Leslie
Eason Shuford’s son, William,
has gotten married recently. He
is a CPA. He and his bride Blakely
are living in the Atlanta area.
Jane Daily Duell would probably
love to be closer to her grandbaby
Ezekiel James, who is the son
of Jane’s daughter Anna. Anna
and Brennen live in Ft Myers, Fl.
I know they love when Grammy
Jane comes to visit. Jane’s son
Peter is studying abroad in Great
Britain. Daughter Lily has made
her decision to attend University
of Arkansas. In case you missed
it last time, Gretchen Perkins got
married to George (Will) Thorogood. Gretchen’s daughter Peggy
and her husband had a baby boy
named Addison Graham Mclallen Duncan (awesome name).
Gretchen’s daughter Kate graduated with an MBA from University
of East Anglia in England. All the
children live close by in Nashville.
Life is good!

“WOW! “ was the word Lisa
Francis Turner so perfectly used
to express her acceptance of the
2015 Outstanding Alumna Award.
Shocked and overwhelmed by
her nomination, Lisa humbly professed her “lack of professional
and academic achievements”
while in the midst of other St.
Mary’s over-achievers. She then
proceeded to entertain us all the
way she always has. She jokingly
admitted that she never really
understood our favorite math
problem about…If a train leaves
Chicago going West at 100 mph
and another leaves Denver traveling East… You remember the
rest. Our favorite “class clown”
earned this award by using her
ready smile and grace to quietly
give her humor and time to those
in need. Through her work at
Independent Presbyterian Church,
she leads by example and in
her speech, encouraged us all to
seek a servant’s heart. “If you see
a turtle sitting on a fence post,
you know he didn’t get there by
himself.” She then counted a long
list of friends and family who
tirelessly supported her through
the misery of husband Buster’s
death and life as a single mom of
daughter Kelly ’08. The Alumnae Chapel, Lisa’s phenomenal
speech, the following luncheon
and her honorary dinner at Memphis Country Club created the
perfect ’78 mini-reunion. The 19
of us who were there thoroughly
enjoyed seeing each other and as
Class of 1980 at Alumnae Weekend
BR: Leslie Strong, Meg Loeb Stecher, Elizabeth Van Brocklin Still.
MR: Rachel Darnell Heath, Margaret Stone Graham, Molly Francis Roberts,
Josie Gilliland Williams. FR: Sally Mansberg Rosenberg.
Kate Wellford Pritchard noted,
we all once again stepped back
in time to our old high school
personalities. Kate sported some
limber moves after her recent hip
replacement. We sorely missed
those who could not attend.
Nancy McFadden Cannon, Carole
Klein, Pam Hyde Bell and Laura
Vookles each emailed to sadly
regret their absences. Tabitha
Francisco McNabb enjoyed a visit
with Sunita Sheth last Thanksgiving and a trip to Charlotte, N.C. to
see her stepson this spring. She,
Jekka Ashman Pinckney, Christy
Smith Mestemacher, Kathy
Daniel Patterson and Lynn Hitchings Albano ’77 have occasional
dinners together as well. Kathy
proudly celebrates 20 years as a
professional wedding, portrait,
product and special event photographer. Daughter Allyson ’11 graduates from Vanderbilt in May and
will use her double major in Human Organizational Development
and Studio Art at her new job at
Planning Design and Research (an
architectural, engineering firm in
Houston, Texas). Kathy Edmondson Riley just returned from Madrid where she played nursemaid
to daughter Claire ’09 who broke
her ankle. She managed to sneak
in a little fun while picking up a
bit of Spanish including words
for crutches and pain meds. And
the grandbaby count is growing! Debby Waltz Hayes loves
spending time with her newest
grandson, Noah, and is planning
another mission trip to Honduras.
Stephanie Riggs Markham’s Annual Easter Eye Dyeing Party was
a hit once again for the 28th year!
Heather Holmes Andersen leaves
us with a sweet poem and invitation to San Francisco:
Our children have left the nest,
So we thought this year would
be best,
To live in a park,
From light until dark,
In the Golden Gate of the West.

The ladies, and their families, of
’79 never cease to amaze me.
Jane Tillman Germany and her
husband, Brad are in a fun filled
whirlwind. Their daughter, Anna,
will be married here in Memphis in May. Anna and her new
husband will then be moving to
Kansas City, then to Shanghai.
Their son, Brad, lives in Chicago
and is now headed to London.
Their youngest son is transferring to Auburn. He is only 2 hours
away from their home in Atlanta.
They have a lot of fun trips to
plan. Jan Lettes Zauzmer and
husband Bobby are happy empty
nesters. Their children are embarking on very fun adventures.
Their daughter, Julie, is a reporter
at the Washington Post in D.C. Ben
is headed to Los Angeles to be a
sabermetrician; yes, I had to look
that one up. He will be with the
Dodgers. Emily, their youngest, is
embarking on an internship this
summer with People Magazine
in NYC. Susan Browne Law was
in town for her daughter Meg’s
play. Meg moved here last fall.
She was in Come Back to the Five
and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean
at the TheatreWorks in Overton
Square. She did a fabulous job.
Melanie Fisher Rice will see
her last daughter Miranda ’15,
of 3, graduate this year. She has
definitely been a constant at St.
Mary’s for many years. My sons
are back in the south, for a bit.
Christopher just turned 30 and is
working at The Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville and Brook, 27,
is here, in Memphis working with
a company that refurbishes and
resells homes. I know they will
be heading back out west soon. I
am loving having them close by
for now.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been
more than 35 years since our
class graduated from St. Mary’s,
but we spent a fun Alumnae
Weekend marveling at that very
fact and catching up with all the
changes since 1980! Our first big
surprise was at the Alumnae
Chapel program: the announcement that Sally Mansberg
Rosenberg had won the Creative
Teacher Award. Her family was
present to see her handed the
award that her Mother won back
in 1981. Many from our class were
there as well, including Elizabeth
Van Brocklin Still, Leslie Strong,
Rachel Darnell-Heath, Meg Loeb
Stecher, Josie Gilliland Williams,
and myself. Chalmers Peyton
Valentine made it to school in

time for the Alumnae Luncheon,
and that evening we were joined
by a few more, including Margaret
McDearman Green, Dana
Anderton Miller, Alex Eddings
Walter, Jan Holmes Crosby, and
Kathy Buckman Gibson. We
spent Friday evening visiting
with the large alumnae group in
the Buckman Center at school
before moving on to the Grove
Grill to catch up with each other.
Saturday evening we had a “girls
only” party at my house. More
classmates were able to come
that evening, so we saw the addition of Elisa Brock, Blake Burr,
Nancy Carlson Cupp, and Kathy
Smith Krieger. We had so much
fun and so many laughs over
the weekend! We played “Trivia
Night” at my house to test our
memories about St. Mary’s and
specifically about our class. The
game brought out so many stories
about teachers, the senior den,
friendships, and the occasional
high school prank. We discussed
where our classmates were that
had not been able to make it and
all agreed that we would work
even harder to have more friends
attend the reunion in 2020! One
classmate who was unable to
make it was Fontaine Carpenter
Pearson. She was in Memphis
during the reunion weekend,
but the events conflicted with
the opening of her photography exhibit at West Memorials
on Broad Street, which is now
a revitalized art and restaurant
area. Fontaine has some beautiful and innovative photographs
of things she sees in nature.
Rachel Darnell-Heath is going to
be the Artist in Residence at St.
Mary’s in 2016. She is going to
have an exhibit in Levy Gallery
in the Buckman Theatre and she
is going to work with students
in all divisions and teach them
during her residency. I was also
able to see Helene Norcross
Rayder very briefly at her sweet
daddy’s funeral earlier in the
spring. Susan McCaull Schaefer
and Amy Clifton Anderson
spent spring break with the St.
Mary’s Alumnae travel group on a

fabulous trip to France. I saw the
photos and heard that it was a
wonderful trip. Gigi Gould ’70 says
that the next trip will be to Italy
in October 2017, so watch for information. Many of us agreed that
it would be a fun trip, especially
if we get a group from our class
to all go! Thanks to all classmates
who came out for a really special
Alumnae Weekend.

Ashley Richardson Sheridan has
returned from “Oz” (Sydney,
Australia) with her husband, Tony.
They are living in Dayton to be
close to Ashley’s mom, Gloria.
Gina Knapp Northcutt was elected to the Longview Independent
School District Board of Trustees.
Her oldest daughter, Conlan,
graduated from Baylor and will be
pursuing her masters in Interior
Design at Marymount this Fall.
LeGrand is a rising junior at W&L.
Ashley Uhlhorn Fricano’s older
daughter, Ripley, graduates from
Greater Atlanta Christian School
and is headed to Presbyterian
College in Clinton, S.C. in the fall;
and her younger daughter, Carter,
a rising Junior, who continues to
play volleyball almost year round.
Cindy Wlilmott Belisle’s oldest,
Sarah, is graduating from Holy
Innocents’ Episcopal School and
will head to Furman in the Fall.
(Henry Brown, son of Claire Halle
Brown ’84 is in Sarah’s graduating
class and Cindy says it’s fun to
see Claire around school.) Cindy’s
younger daughters: Mollie is a
rising Junior there and Caroline is
a rising 7th grader at St. Martin’s
Episcopal School. I had the great
pleasure of visiting with Claudia
Broeker Egger on one of her
recent trips to Austin. Claudia’s
oldest daughter, Dominique,
is graduating from UT-Austin
this month and her youngest,
Cassie, is headed to Ireland for
the summer. Congratulations
to all of our graduates this year
and Congratulations to Celeste

Brandon Garrott Morrison has
graduated her last daughter from
St. Mary’s! Jane ’15 will attend
UNC Chapel Hill in the fall. Her
youngest, Murray, will be a senior
at MUS in the fall. After 18 years
with J&J, Therese Kavanagh
Despeaux is now working for a
Spanish company, Grifols, selling
plasma infusion for rare disease.
She and Lisa Page May recently
discovered that they both have
parents living at The Village
in Germantown, a retirement
community. Catherine Trippeer
Jameson may get the award for
celebrating her 50th year with
the most pizzazz, but there are a
few others helping her out. She
recently made a southern tour
beginning in Memphis where
she had dinner with Cissy Bruce
Jackson, Lela Bellows SimpsonGerald, Margaret Jones Fraser,
Posey Saunders Cochrane, and
Tasha Pretorious Kawell, and all
their husbands. She then headed
to her previous hometown of
Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and on to
Beaufort, S.C., and Savannah, Ga.
She finally rested at her house
in Tarpon Springs, Fla. But she
is not finished! In late summer
she is taking the “trek of a lifetime” in the Alps from Italy into
Switzerland! Along for the trip
will be Elise Kilpatrick Atkins and
her two sisters, Kara Kilpatrick
Preston ’85 and Laura Kilpatrick
Lamar ’80, and Tasha and Posey!
Fifty years does not seem to
slow these women down at all!
Cynthia Hodges Cobb is hardly
stopping these days either. We
try to get our families together
every year or so, but when I
contacted Cynthia about dates,
she was just returning from out
of town with son William who
has recently completed his Eagle
Scout project. She was about to
leave for a rowing regatta with
William and Hudson who were
also completing multiple AP
exams. Finally, they were capping
off the month with a trip to Bald
Head Island. Sadly for me, our
visit will have to wait! Kathryn
Carpenter Swords gets my award
for the most exciting news. She
has just gotten a new job as the
1st, 4th, and 7th grade art teacher
at Ensworth School in Nashville!
Congrats, Kat! Son John is a freshman there, and daughter Sara is
a junior at Harpeth Hall. Eppie
Lunsford-Ozen and husband
Ergun decided to relocate from
Istanbul to London after son Ellis
graduated from high school. They
are still in transition as Eppie
and daughter Emily (14) are fully
relocated, but Ergun is sharing
time between the two cities temporarily. Kathy Murphy Anderson
is doing a few things you might
expect of her. She is active in her
Episcopal church and sings in
the choir even as she helps with
confirmation classes. Her daughter is now at Wentworth Institute
of Technology working on her
mechanical engineering degree to
follow in her dad’s footsteps. But
there are two unexpected pieces
of news: Kathy is taking bluegrass
fiddle lessons, and she leads
camping trips in the mountains!
She said, “If you remember me
from St. Mary’s, you know that
camping is something I learned
AFTER graduation!” At first I
couldn’t picture Kathy playing
the fiddle or going camping, but
as long as I think of her around
a campfire while fiddling, it fits
perfectly! Her guide work is done
Mindy Hamilton ‘84 enjoys
snowboarding.

of Georgia Athletics and loves expanding to sports medicine. Her
true love is neuro-oncology, and
with her sister Karen Patterson
Williams ’87, they have been de-
veloping one of the few community-based Palliative Medicine
programs for patients with brain
tumors. Kim’s son Cole, 16, loves
mountain biking and wrestling,
as well as working on a farm.

looks forward to college. Melia
Miller Murphy’s son Will graduated Rhodes College and Andrew
finished his freshman year at Ole
Miss. Melia and Drew are active
with Rhodes Parent Council, and
Melia enjoys being on the board
of Tennessee Shakespeare Company. Mindy Hamilton’s son Max
is two and a half and the highlight of her life. She is celebrating
four years at Paramount Pictures

so she could get “Cool Mommy
credit” for the first run movies
she is working on. Mindy loves to
snowboard too. Celeste Barzizza
Stallings’ oldest son Will loves
his first year at UVA. Emily, tenth
grader, is juggling cross country,
lacrosse, and FOCUS. The family
soon travels to Belize for snorkeling and fishing, and then Memphis for a wedding in September.

Our other yoga instructor, Cathey
Turner Alexander, encourages
all of us with creaky bones to
try yoga. Daughter Elizabeth ’14
completed her freshman year at
University of San Diego, while
Elizabeth will be a junior at ECS.
Ally Burr-Harris is still in Portland, Ore., married, with three
kids, although one has now been
successfully launched. Ally is a
child psychologist, slightly burnt
out and having increasingly intrusive fantasies of making garden
art in her backyard and finishing
three books she started a decade
ago. She is proud that she can do
impressive corn rows, box braids,
African threading, and other assorted styles on her daughter’s
hair. Molly Brown writes from
Corvallis, Ore. where son Coby, 13,
loves basketball, lacrosse and is in
the school play. Coby’s brother Michael, 27, teaches fourth grade in
the Chicago Public Schools. Their
new addition, Jeter, is a 60 pound
standard poodle puppy! Merri
Leigh Masters Johnson continues
her PT career with presentations
at conferences. Those presentations have spawned other
speaking opportunities within
her hospital which has been very
rewarding. Jack will be in seventh
grade and has taken up tuba,
while Charlie, third grader, is an
avid reader. Our fourth grade
teachers, Kelly O’Shields Klinke
and Carrie Jaeger Carpenter, love
teaching at PDS and St George’s,
respectively. Kelly’s son August
will attend college in the fall
and Zachary is a sophomore at
MUS. Carrie and Stephen are now
certified as foster parents and are
anxiously waiting to see who will
be joining their family. Martin
and I are well. The house is quiet
without a furry friend, but I am
routinely visiting Mewtopia in
search of my purrfect new pet.

Frances Coughlin Fenelon’s
daughters will be in 5th and 7th
this fall. She was lured back to
the Waller law firm which opened
a Memphis office that we hope
she will work out of from time to
time. Jennifer Miller Buhler and
Jon’s daughter Mary Taylor ’25 will
be in 3rd grade at St. Mary’s this
fall and she swims on the Turkey
swim team. Jon owns Leafguard
Gutters and Jennifer works as a
RN for Dr. Podraza OB/GYN who
manages natural hormone replacement and thyroid problems.
Emily Ragen Smith and her family are moving back to Columbia,
S.C. this summer. She says “it’s
hard to leave Memphis but if we
have to move we are excited to go
back to S.C.”. Becca will start her
sophomore year in the fall and
Mateo will be in the 5th grade.
Christy Reed just celebrated 15
years at AT&T. She and her sisters
Candy Reed Pearson ‘79 and
Angela Reed Yakel ’82 are excited
that their parents relocated to

close (for Texas)! Pidge Colbert
Macdonald’s daughter Mallory
’18 had Madame Bell (aka Mary
Lacy Bell ’88) as her French
teacher last year and Pidge’s son
is headed to Lausanne this fall.
Pidge works in the OR at Le Bonheur. Margaret Malone Rosser
and her family visited her sister
Kim Malone Scott ’86 this spring
in Calif. Kim has twins the same
age as Elsie and they say “it’s very
fun to see all the cousins get to
hang out with each other”! They
also enjoyed the good California
sun after a long, cold winter in
D.C. Lisa Wright Moses and her
daughter Mary participated in
their second theatre production
this spring – “SHREK The Musical”
at The Fair Theatre in Somerville,
Tenn. Their performances were
in memory of Lisa’s Mom, Beverly
Howell Wright who passed away
very suddenly in December. What
a nice tribute! Moriah McStay
Lee’s daughter Madeleine ’15 will
be at NYU studying film this fall.
Moriah is busy promoting her
first published novel Everything
That Makes You and finishing
her second, which will hopefully come out in 2017. They are
taking a family trip to Scotland
and London this summer and are
most excited about a day trip on
the Harry Potter train. Jennifer
Hanemann Chandler’s fourth
cookbook The Southern Pantry
Cookbook released this fall and she
also helped open Lafayette’s Music Room in Overton Square. She
also has a new radio program on
WKNO-FM called “The Weekly
Dish”. She writes, “I am having fun with it as I get to write
and talk about all my favorite
food finds!” It airs on Tuesday
mornings during NPR’s Morning
Edition. As for me, we are excited
that Caroline will be starting at
St. Mary’s this fall, I am busy with
work and Tod and I are starting to

It was great seeing so many of
you back in April at our 25th! I
must admit, I did wonder whether
anyone would actually show
since we seem to get a (curated)
glimpse into each other’s lives
on Facebook at regular intervals.
So I was pleasantly surprised by
the solid turnout. Clearly there’s
no better substitute for a chapel
sing-along in real time. Speaking of reunions, big, loud sorority
snaps to Allison Mallory Morris
for taking the reins and organizing our class events, which went
swimmingly. Her twins Mallory
’27 and Marley ’27 are at SMS,
and she just started a new job at
First Tennessee, where she wrote
in from a conference in Austin
on Identity and Access Management. (Work with me here and
just pretend we know what I’m
talking about.) Ellen Rawlins
Uzarowicz reports that after
selling her company, Right Bank
Babies, she has officially become
a cat lady. The family — including
her 10 and 11-year-old daughters
— are now the proud owners of
three: Bubba Jack, Ulysses and Dr.
Jones. Rachel Lightman is thrilled
to be teaching fourth grade after
spending three years teaching
seventh. After this experience,
she’d like to make a public apology here and now to our middle
school teachers on behalf of our
entire class for the torture we put
them through. “I don’t know how
you all kept at it as long as you
did. We were extremely fortunate
that you tolerated us.” Amen.
Caroline Archer Baker, Laurie
Smith Hooper, Susannah Murphy Malek, and Beth Kreamer
West each wrote in to say how
sorry and disappointed they were
to have missed the reunion. They
actually all sounded quite sincere,
and they (almost) all promised
to be at our 30th. (Nothing like
a little public pressure to force
a commitment.) Tricia Hood
Thomas completed her third year
in admissions at St. George’s-
Memphis. She and husband Brian
celebrated their 18th anniversary
in June. (Clearly they got married
when they were 12). To celebrate,
they headed to Boston, taking in a
couple of Red Sox games, a Dave
Matthews concert, lots of seafood
& some sightseeing. It was great
to see Ali Reeves Smith, who
made her reunion debut in April
since graduating 25 years ago! Her
son Cole wrapped up Pre-K at St.
George’s, and she’s a veterinarian at Hillcrest Animal Hospital
in Bartlett. Jenny Kate Herring
McMullan, husband Paul and the
six kiddos are rocking along in
Brentwood/Nashville to their own
reality show, Jenny Kate + Eight —
er, Seven. Most astonishingly, her
family finished up the first official
school year smoothly, with one in
fourth grade, one in second, four
in kindergarten and — wait for
it — no nanny. (Just when I was
starting to feel on my A-game…)
Anne Copper DiFronzo was sorry
to miss the reunion but had family in town for her daughter’s first
communion. Her twins, Dominic
& Olivia, are almost two, and
they, along with eight-year old
Sofia, keep her busy. She’s looking
forward to a special motherdaughter trip to London with
Sofia this summer. Mary Anne
Kish Seibert still loves Hendrix
College (as a staffer, not a student) and missed seeing everyone
who couldn’t make the reunion.
She reports that her husband Rob
ran across the Grand Canyon —
and back— in the same day and
that she’s excited to spend the
summer with her kids, Zoe, 11
and Turner, 8. And to those of you
who remember her brother Sarko
(everyone’s favorite prom date),
he’s now engaged to Grace Megel,
who graduated from Hutchison
in ’90 as well. The wedding is
this November. Mazel tov! Missy
Kramer, honorary SMS grad,
joined us in April and reports
that she and her family still love
N’awlins, where her daughters
are at the Lycee Francais. Missy
now sits on the board of the ADL

mittee. Missy, who knew you’d
grow up to be such a macher?
(Don’t speak Yiddish? Google it).
Stacy Goldate missed seeing everyone back in April, but she just
couldn’t escape her job editing a
TV show about cold cases. When
she’s not editing murder, she and
hubby Craig are making their
own documentary about aging as
well as designing a new droughttolerant front yard for their home
in thirsty LA. Taylor Holden
Taylor is the Director of Sales and
Marketing at The Racquet Club.
(Which reminds me, big thanks,
Taylor, for a lovely Saturday
evening reunion event there.) Her
daughter Holden ’25 is in second
grade at SMS, and son Bruce is
in 4th grade at Grace-St. Luke’s.
Both are active in sports and
enjoy acting and reading. Alexis
Zanone was sorry not to be able
to see everyone in April. She was
buried in Kleenex and doused in
Mucinex. (Lex, we missed you,
but is it terrible if we say it’s a
good thing you didn’t show?) She
recently worked an event with
Jessica Alba, who shared her
story about building The Honest
Company, and now Alexis reports
she has gone even greener. Hilary Davis Robinson loved seeing
everyone at Sweet Grass back in
April and was looking forward to
basking in summer days. Kasha
Winker Shaw, Caydie Brown
Nickey, Elizabeth Robbins, Kristen Thompson Keegan, Madeline
Amos Rollins, Susan Hearn,
and Sujata Tejwani loved seeing
everyone at the reunion and can’t
wait until our 30th. (They didn’t
exactly tell me this—or write in at
all, for that matter — but I could
tell they had a great time… Plus,
anyone who showed up deserves
a special shout out. So there you
go.) Shaila Bheda was glad to be
able to make it to the tail end of
the reunion events from Brooklyn
for a less than 24-hour visit. She’s
digging her job at the NYC Health
Department. And she has the
great pleasure of having me barge
in nearly every Saturday morning
since we’re just a few blocks away
from each other. In the annals of
38 |
home renovations, I continue to
channel Erin Brockovich as I take
on the New York Department of
Buildings, (which makes the US
Post Office look like the Apple
store). Life in Brooklyn is grand,
and most of it–with the exception of a crowded Manhattan
commute–takes place within a
3-block radius. Just like Mayberry,
only with a few more languages
spoken. And with that, it’s a wrap.
See you all at our 30th. May we
continue to beat the odds and
meet up in real time. But if not,
there’s always Google Hangouts.

Greetings! First of all, sincere
apologies are due to Alison
Taylor Nooks for the mistakes
in the last newsletter! Just to
make sure I get it right, Alison
states, “I teach online for Georgia
Perimeter College only and
adjunct in MO ‘now and then’ at
Kirk’s institution but not online.”
Also, she is not a teacher for
Northern Virginia Community
College’s (NOVA) Marketing and
Communications. She actually
does PR/marketing for them and
is the editor of a weekly publication. As for her new updates,
Alison and husband Kirk have
enjoyed visits to see their childhood friends (in Dallas) and also
enjoyed having family (Kirk’s
brother and his family as well
as Alison’s father) visit them in
their hometown. They registered
daughter Anniston (who’s making
A’s in 8th grade in advanced classes) for high school and she will be
attending a young scholars program at Truman State University
in the summer. Congratulations
to Anniston! Twins Konnor and
Kaydence are growing up quickly
and are keeping the whole family laughing! Congratulations
to Holly Hilsenbeck who is now
president of Duckworth Pathology
Group in Memphis! Holly
graduated with an MBA from UTKnoxville last year while continu-
ing to work full time as a pathologist. Her son Chance is in junior
kindergarten at Grace St. Luke’s
and Margaret Craddock McLean’s
youngest child, Campbell, is one
of his classmates. Megan Saxon
Murphree had a wonderful reunion at the beach with 16 of her
college friends. They get together
for a reunion every other year.
Megan is also looking forward to
our 25th class reunion next year!
Malini Gupta-Ganguli is busy as
ever. She and her family enjoyed
a trip to Venice, Italy. She also
added a new physician to her
endocrinology practice G2Endo
in Memphis. On top of all this,
Malini is also taking Taekwondo
classes. We are doing well in
Nashville and really enjoying all
the growth that’s happening and
exciting things this town has to
offer. We are also slowly getting
settled into our new place as we
continue to work, spend time
with family, and travel a bit here
and there. I truly hope all of you
are doing well and would love to
hear from you when you have
time.

As Joann Self Selvidge wrote,
“Bad@$$ women unite!” I believe
that can be a collective call for
the class of ’94. The top contenders for major life changes begin
with Sophie Askew Parker who
got engaged last July, moved back
to Memphis in August, began
working as a Senior Art Director
at St. Jude Children’s Research
Hospital in October, was married
in February (honeymoon to follow
in June), and has become an “extra mom” to 3 amazing children.
Sigrid Longsworth Orr has lived
in NY since her freshman year in
college but will be leaving both
her fantastic 14-year-position as
Director of Studio Arts at the JCC,
and newly established company,
Bird River Studios, to move closer
to family in Cleveland, Tenn.
around the end of June. She’s purchased a big house, expects lots
of visitors, and has contacted former classmate Carol Walker who
lives in the area to help her make
a teaching connection. Jamie
Morano Re was recently hired at
the VA to launch their telemedicine project. She’ll continue to
be a professor at USF and travel
for additional opportunities like
the one that recently presented
itself in Beijing, and it sounds like
she enjoys spending time with
her new husband. Missy Alpert
Lurie is enjoying her new baby
girl Lila and her career change to

Realtor at Crye-Leike with hubby
Brian. Sarah Lacy is proud of the
reporting by her editorial teams at
Pando, and mentioned write-ups
in Fast Company and Marie Claire.
What she seems most proud of,
though, is her determined, boot
stompin’ girl and sweet boy who
remind her of the joy in life.
Joann, whose daughter sounds as
feisty as Sarah’s, has been busy
with her new house, selling the
old house, editing “The Keepers”,
a film about zookeepers which
premiered at the Nashville Film
Festival this April, pre-production work on juvenile justice in
America, and getting to know
her son who was born last year
during our 20th Reunion. She’s
looking forward to hubby Steve
being home from touring, playing
in some local shows. Laura Foster
Gettys has also been moving into
her “new, old house” following a
fire last summer. She anticipates
a quieter summer with trips
to the beach and mountains,
spending time with her “2 short
people.” Sarah Gross Little reports
having bought a house in Dallas
unintentionally, with a quick
sale of their old one. She is now
working in the world of options
trading and says that it’s a good
fit for her “love of puzzles and a
combo of high and low mathematics.” She looks forward to
catching up with SMSers over the
summer when she brings her kids
for “Grammie Camp.” In addition
to her new baby boy, Virginia
Ralston Jaramillo, also has a new
home to add to the insanity of her
“crazytown” of new mommy sleep
deprivation. She was looking forward to her reunion in Memphis
with sister Olivia Ralston ’95,
and reflected on how great our
20th reunion was. Time flies by
so quickly, and Elizabeth Lake
Lovett is trying to take advantage
of every minute with her little girl
when she’s not carpooling her
son to play dates and birthday
parties. Rathi Rao entertained us
with her description of her 3 boys,
“loud, smelly and all boy” noting
that she is constantly breaking up
a fight. Her work in immigration
40 |
law is going well and her practice
is growing, as she recently opened
2 new offices in S.C. and Ga. She’s
looking forward to her parents
moving closer since they have
now retired, but reflects on the
loss of no longer having a home
in Memphis. Sarah Cole-Turner
Vincent has been settling into her
new job as a speech-language pathologist in a local school district
and feels she has found what she
was meant to do. Her kids seem
happy with their school and all
their activities, but since hubby
is only on his 2nd year at Elon
University, she’s a little hesitant
to become too settled before he’s
offered tenure. As for our joyful,
“unboxable” and “unmarried with
no children” gang…Kathryn Leigh
DeRossitt loves having her own
criminal defense law practice,
enjoys her runs past old stomping grounds, and looks forward to
seeing how “things will fall into
place.” Sarah Ledbetter is trying
to decide whether to move to
Asheville, New Orleans, or stay in
Memphis (where she has someone she is “very much in love
with”) to expand upon her education, help her grow as an artist,
and build her creativity coaching
and counseling practice. Mid-July,
Sarah will be at Reed College in
Portland, Ore., performing at the
Body Mind Centering Conference
as part of her project that investigates Americans’ experiences of
their bodies, industrial farming,
and the politics of space. Jessica
Johnson, on her way to Fort
Myers, spent time with Mrs. Burr
at the Atlanta airport. Mrs. Burr
was on her way to visit Helen
Burr who still lives in Spain. As
Jessica said, it’s such a small
world. I’m constantly amazed
how different our lives are, yet
still share so much in common.
I’m about 6 months into a new job
as a supervisor of occupational
and physical therapists in two
different schools. I’m not home as
much as I’d like but I’m learning
how to make it work. I’m looking
forward to hearing more from, as
Sigrid says, “you turkey nuggets!”

Well, we are fresh off of our 20th
reunion! The energy surging in
the River City was awesome, but
it was just the cherry on top of
getting to see how the women in
the Class of 1995 have come into
their own, both personally and
professionally. Can 40 really be
the new 30? Say yes. We enjoyed
two great evenings out – and
some lunches and get-togethers,
too. (I remain dejected over missing the Mrs. Gill sighting on the
St. Mary’s campus.) Cybil Mah
Lieu did a bang-up job planning
the reunion, and we appreciate
all the work she put in. (By the
way, Cybil is still going strong at
Points of Light in Atlanta, and her
little boy and husband are great,
too.) Before the reunion rundown,
I’ll try to be engaging without
being dull. If I fail, I blame Olivia
B. Elizabeth Cochran Hill and
her husband have bought a home
in the Atlanta area where they
plan to raise their sweet family.
Ashley Goldstein Allen visited
Elizabeth to celebrate Elizabeth’s
son Wally’s first birthday! Ashley
and her husband also bought a
new home in D.C. and plan to
renovate soon. Patricia Graue is
back in New York City after a fun
few years in San Francisco. During
a recent visit, we talked into the
wee hours about family and fried
food. Carolyn Seelbinder Boetger,
who recently got her real estate
license, tells me that she and her
family are soon off on their first
trip to Disney World. They are
also starting construction on their
new home on the Holston River!
Sounds beautiful! Meanwhile,
in Birmingham, Hallie Bourland
Wagner and husband Martin
recently celebrated the birth of
their second son, William Thomas
Wagner. And now – reunions:
Doing her part to inject even more
awesomeness into Memphis,
Dawn Law rocked a mean cobalt
blue dress at our Friday night
gathering at Mellow Mushroom,
a restaurant that she opened as
part of her professional role with
the beloved Atlanta company. It
was a nice place to mainline tasty
carbs and reconnect – thanks,
Dawn! No big deal – Sonia
Torrey placed 3rd overall and
1st female at a race in Lakeland
during reunion weekend. She is
moving to New Mexico with her
boyfriend and sees counselingrelated higher education plans
in her future. Kathryn Wiseman
drove in from Ark. – and is still
liking her job at Walmart, traveling (most recently to England),
and when she’s in D.C., enjoying bourbon on my porch. Olivia
Ralston (in killer shoes, natch) is
updating the London home she
and her husband purchased. It
was fun to see her sister, Virginia
Ralston Jaramillo ’94, at Mellow
Mushroom with her cutie third
baby Oscar in tow. Speaking of
babies, I enjoyed nuzzling Murff
Oates Galbreath’s third, Mary
Abbay, at Murff’s house. It was
great chatting with everyone
on Saturday at Local in hopping Overton Square, including
Natasha Heflin Davis, Gwen
McVean Coffey, Blair Bobo
Geer, Calder Britt Clark, Carolyn
Seelbinder Boetger, Katherine
Hasen Le Denmat, Sarah
Trosper Olivo, Elizabeth Schatz
Passarella, Ragini Gupta, Allison
Roberts, Gabrielle Rose Chang,
and Kristen Boswell Amonette
about all manner of topics, including high heels, Crossfit, Texas,
anesthesia, and that time Patricia
left her car running in the parking
lot. Meeting Lisa Mulrooney’s
fiancé, Glen Coombs, on Saturday
night was a treat. We send y’all
best wishes and remain jealous
of your sun-burnished vacation photos! Fun fact: Elizabeth
Richardson Fitzgerald – teacher
and photographer extraordinaire
– is taking photos at their wedding! It was so good to hug Lee
Davidson Holt and her husband
as they awaited the birth of their
baby. Lee was a trooper for coming out both nights – when I was
“with child,” I enjoyed nothing
more than a couch. I learned
that Dhevi Kumar Broecker’s
husband Arndt is fully embracing Seattle life – and now cures
his own salmon! Gabrielle Rose
Chang is enjoying Chicago with
her husband and their little girl.
Katherine Crone Wilson is still
doing well at her Atlanta law firm.
As we all thumbed through old
photos of us in white dresses,
in hats, and (in some cases)
bikinis on Black Friday’s nighttime scavenger hunt, some of
us may have hatched a plot to
crash the St. Mary’s Prom, which
was that same night, but I cannot confirm. More scoop: Aussie
Allison Roberts is stateside, full
of stories about her animal-filled
homestead and her travel plans in
America. Sarah Carlson Landers
shared stories of her teenage children and gave those of us with
teeny ones hope that we will one
day emerge from the early years
of parenthood intact – and maybe
even awesome. Ragina Gupta did
the same – swapping stories with
Sandra Koh, Katherine Crone
Wilson, Kathryn Wiseman, and
Allison McConomy Davenport
about what truly matters in life,
including the value of community. In case you were wondering,
Allison McConomy Davenport still
has no sense of direction and will
lend you an umbrella in a gale.
Members of the class enjoyed
lunch at Michelle Pao Levine’s
Mosa Asian Bistro and tried out
new places on Broad. (Michelle
continues to receive recognition for her contributions to the
Memphis community and it’s not
hard to see why.) Meanwhile,
they were out of everything at the
restaurant on Broad, and we were
photo-bombed – see Facebook.
Nonetheless, reunion weekend
was a blast – I loved trading new
stories and falling out over old
ones. We missed those of you who
could not make it – and I hope to
hear from you soon! Email me.

Emily Middlecoff Anderson has
some fabulous news: Slade will
finish his last chemo treatment
at St. Jude this summer! Emily
writes, “We are so excited and
thankful for all the prayers and
support along the way! St. Jude is
the most amazing place on earth
and we will always be indebted!”
I know that many of us have
been following Slade’s story on
Facebook and we are all excited
to hear that he is doing so well.
Emily says that is has been a fun
but busy year, with Slade finishing 2nd grade, Elizabeth finishing
kindergarten, and Louise graduating from 4th grade. Bernice

rides.” The whole family is looking
forward to Jess’ visit this summer
from Hungary as they always
have such an amazing time with
her. Sharlene Sidhu Keithley is
adding Girl Scout Troup leader
to her list of roles. She is excited

in Rapid City, S.D., loving the
Black Hills. Ellen just got her
master degree in Curriculum and
Instruction and is now teaching
language arts to upper elementary kids. Her husband leaves this
summer for his 5th deployment
overseas. She says that life is full
but wonderful! Courtney Shove
enjoyed a visit with her mother
over Easter weekend and is looking forward to a family reunion in
Connecticut this summer. Natalie
Nussbaum escaped the freezing
Chicago winter by taking a much
needed trip to Mexico in January.
Ron and I welcomed our second
daughter earlier this year and are
now adjusting to life as a family
of four. We have several trips
planned for the rest of the year
and are excited to be able to take
the girls on some new adventures.

her husband Solomon welcomed
a baby boy, Hudson Omar, on
April 1. Celia Watson, Emily
Wills Hale, Jeanne Hartzog, and
Katie Irish and threw a fantastic
girls shower weekend in NYC for
Ashley and even imported Central
BBQ from Memphis! Also in New
York, Sara Paratore Keller and
her family survived the especially
tough winter this year and are so
thankful that spring did finally
arrive in NYC. Her girls, Kate and
Lucy, are 2 and 4 now. Congrats
to Sara who is going to nursing
school at Columbia soon! Clare
Levy writes that her daughters
Eden and Norah are 2 and 4 and
recently visited Tennessee where
they were able to see Abby Taylor
Frazer and her family in Memphis
and Anne Spence Lucas and
Beverly Stevens in Nashville.
Jamie Richards Whitney writes
that her youngest, Janet, is 18
months, Robert is 3 years old, and
Cynthia is 5. She recently changed
jobs leaving private practice and
is now a staff attorney in the
same federal courthouse where
she did her clerkship after law
school. Autumn Witt Boyd also
changed jobs recently, starting
her own law practice earlier this
year (www.awbfirm.com) helping
entrepreneurs and small businesses with copyright, trademark,
and business issues. Autumn’s
twin boys are 3 and a half and full
of energy! Autumn and her family
met up with Melissa Ohsfeldt
and her family in Chattanooga
recently. Melissa lives in Nashville
and also changed jobs earlier this
year. We also welcomed a new
addition this year, a daughter,
Amelie Catherine. Her big sisters
Abby and Ruthie are so proud! –1998

Jennifer Fong writes that she
enjoyed visiting with Anne Claire
Bellott Jordan and her family in
Savannah, Ga. over the holidays.
Jennifer also writes that she also
recently went on a volunteer
vacation to Buenos Aires with
Habitat for Humanity. Anne Claire
reports that she and husband
Jeff are enjoying being parents to
Henry and Emma and are planning their 10th anniversary trip
this year. Congratulations are in
order for Nupur Sidhu Bal who
wrote in that she was named as
one of the 40 Influential Women
in Virginia. Congratulations also

and husband Derek welcomed
Wyatt Charles Barton this past
Fall and also recently moved into
a new house in Bloomington, IL.
Meggan Wurzburg Kiel is in her
5th year as Director of College
Advising and Alumni Support
at The Soulsville Charter School
and is excited to report that 100%
of this Senior class this year has
been accepted to college! She also
writes she made a trip to NYC to
visit Lauren Webb Mitchell and
got to spend time with Lauren
and husband Luke’s adorable little
boy Henry. I can also attest to his
adorableness as I got to meet him
over the holidays when both Lauren and I were visiting family in
Oklahoma City. As many of you
may have heard, Meg Kinnard
lost her amazing father suddenly
this Spring. Although this was a
huge blow to her family, Meg and
Adair are doing well. Meg writes
that Adair will be starting school
in the Fall and that she has been
very busy lately with work, covering the President and candidates
for the upcoming presidential
campaigns. Ashley Bellet also has
work related news as she will be
moving to Madison, Wisconsin
to be a PhD candidate in their
interdisciplinary theater studies
program. In addition, she was officially made Commissioner of the
Education commission of USITT
and was nominated for the Board
of Directors.

Thanks to everyone who
responded with news! First,
congratulations are in order for

York, Lauren Hinson is designing stores for Cole Haan as well
as working on two residential
design projects of her own. Libby
Lawson Foster and her husband
are loving Spain and are studying
at the University of the Rioja. She
writes that they’re generally feeling old since they’re surrounded
by mostly college students. They
will be there until September
and extend an open invitation

Our 15th reunion came and went
in the blink of an eye, but it was
fun to see everyone who made
it. A big thanks to Mary-Kathryn
Millner Herrington, Courtney
Routt Worthman, and Amy
Reinhardt Robinson for all their
planning and hard work. We hope
to see even more folks in 5 years!
I think Carrie Lawson Wills
summed it up best in an email
to our class. “It is comforting to
know that while most of us have
changed in many ways, we’re
basically the same smart-aleck
girls from 15 years ago. I was glad
to see that Lexie could be pep
club president for the Grizzlies,
Lisa and Sarah can still bicker like
sisters then giggle 2 seconds later,
Tami can teach a class on Kardashian family systems, Megha
still laughs ALL the time, MK and
Amy are gorgeous pregnant people who can rock heels at night
even if one of their toddlers threw
poop on the floor that morning,
and Kat Gordon subsists on a diet
of buttercream frosting…” We all
agreed– Well put, Carrie! Here are
more of the things we discussed
over the weekend. As well as
buttercream frosting, Kat Gordon
has recently been consuming
cheddar sour cream potato chips
and vodka tonics in the bathtub.
Whitney Baer adores stealthy
missions for fast food fries and
devours them under the cover of
nightfall, circling the parkway in
order to avoid detection. Lessie
Calhoun Rainey has recently
been eating peanut butter from
the jar with a spoon inside the
pantry while pretending to
contemplate healthier options.
Kate Wichlinski reports that a
spoonful of peanut butter is also
her addiction; she’s partial to PB&
Co’s crunch time. Kristine New
Farnsworth loves dark chocolate
squares & honey roasted peanut
butter (separately) while hiking
the Pacific Northwest, behind
the monkey bars, in the car, etc.
The key is to hide it from her
preschooler so he doesn’t eat
more than she does. Megha Karkera Kanjia admits that she eats
peanut butter everyday at work...
it turns out that the baby she had
last year wasn’t the 20 lb baby
she thought he would be. It was
just 20 lbs of peanut butter and
Oreos. Amy Reinhardt Robinson
has been enjoying a sugar binge
in 2015. Cupcakes, brownies, ice
cream, you name it...perhaps the
“baby” she is carrying is just a
stockpile of cookies. Liz Palomo
has developed a fondness for Jack
Link’s Beef Steak strips, which she
noisily masticates at her desk,
horrifying surrounding coworkers. Tami Sawyer falls asleep in
a superman cape after inhaling tater tots from Sonic. Lexie
Hicks Johnston went to Krystal
on Saturday after the reunion,
and found a Krystal in her purse
the next day. Ellis Dixon’s new
health regimen includes heaping
portions of roasted goat paired
with an entire bottle of 2 euro
vinho tinto. As the Portuguese are
not into the idea of doggie bags,
she has collected dozens of cloth
napkins soaked in the remnants
of her dinner. Her purse is starting to smell like the senior den
in 1999. Lisa Ansley Clapper has
mastered the skill of splitting her
time between hovering over the
cookie boxes in Fresh Market in
order to select the perfect box
of Chocolate Chunk Cookies,
waiting in line at Baskin Robbins
for a hand packed half gallon
of Chocolate Chip ice cream,
sneaking brownies from Wang’s
while visiting with her mom, and
washing down Glazed Donuts
from Gibsons with milk. Carrie
Lawson Wills sneaks chicken and
waffles in the rain in a Little Rock
hospital parking lot. Emily White
is still eating Eggo waffles every
morning and Reese’s peanut
butter cups every afternoon in an
attempt to relive her SMS days.
I personally had to stop buying
pimento cheese recently because
I was eating the entire container
myself. I also hide stashes of dark
chocolate covered almonds to
snack on when my husband and
kids aren’t looking! It’s been a
fun and hilarious spring with the
Class of 2000. We have to thank
the class of 2016 for inspiring us
with their yearbook photos. Can’t
wait for the next issue! Cheers.

Big things continue to happen for
the Class of 2001! Hayley Bower
Gerber, Charlie, Cole and Cartter
recently moved to a new house
that they built. Kemper Kelso
Brennan is also getting settled
in a new home after a 10 month
renovation! Elizabeth Laws is
living in Paris and says if anyone
heads over there, be sure to look
her up! Stephanie Vieron Leary
reports that things are moving
along as usual in Baltimore, and
they recently celebrated James’
second birthday! Morgan Raines
checked in to report that life in
London is lovely. Claire Davies
Rhodes is still teaching com-
munication courses at FSCJ. She
and Andrew love Florida and “will
never live away from the beach
again.” Sounds reasonable to me!
Katherine Eder McDonnell and
Daniel are enjoying married life
in Nashville. Sudipa Sarkar, Saira
Mahmood and Kathy Chen Budde
were bridesmaids in her wedding.
Kathy Chen Budde and John are
adjusting to life with a newborn.
Claire Lois Budde was born in
March, and they are completely
in love with her! Congratulations!
Ashley Ayres Bryant, Josh and
Mac are expecting baby boy #2
in June, so they’re gearing up for
two boys under two this summer!
Nishta Mehra reports that Shiv
will be 3 in July and is talking up a
storm during every waking hour.
Nishta is excited to be English
Department Chair next year at
her school and was really thrilled
that her essay published at Guernica Magazine was linked to on the
NPR website in March. Way to go,
girl! Liz Keltner will be opening
her new venture, hOMe Collective, this summer. It is a wellness
center committed to health and
healing that provides clients with
individual, group, and community
offerings such as yoga therapy,
nutrition workshops, acupuncture, and much more. Liz is living
into her belief that people must
cultivate wholeness from the
inside out to lead the vibrant,
authentic lives they deserve.
Check her out if you’re ever in
Denver! Emma Self also owns her
own business, Green Girl Produce,
growing Micro greens indoors
downtown at Emerge Memphis
(www.greengirlproduce.com), selling to local chefs at all the major
hotels, small biz restaurants,
and to the good people running
CSAs. When she’s not working,
Emma spends time with her family, Sally’s little girl, Anna Vale,
and Joann’s two kids, Stevie and
Frannie, and her own four legged
kiddos, Roxy and Bubda. Susan
Buckner will marry Cullen James
Rose on August 1st in Memphis.
Best Wishes, Susan! She was
slated to speak at alumnae chapel
at St. Mary’s in February, but it

ended up being Snowmageddon
week, so she’s hoping to find a
date next year that will work.
Courtney Taylor Humphreys
reported that their house was on
the market at press time, which
has been a real adventure with
two young children! Tucker (3.5)
and Heloise (2) are so fun and are
becoming sweet little buddies (at
least most of the time). Courtney
misses seeing the Memphis St.
Mary’s crew and demands that
we have a Memphis get together
soon, which I second! Clifton,
Anderson and I were in the midst
of moving to a new house at press
time, and we’re anxiously awaiting the arrival of our second baby
boy later this summer. As always,
it’s great to hear about all the
exciting things our classmates
are up to. Everyone mark your
calendars for our 15th (!) reunion
in April 2016 so we can catch up
in person!

Another successful and exciting 6 months in the life of the
Class of 2002! Our perennial
student Wendi Muse continues
her Virginia-to-New York odyssey
each semester, with stop-offs in
Brazil (and now Argentina). She
is doing research and writing
on multiracial Brazilian female
samba dancers /models/performers from the 1960–80s and is
presenting at conferences and
knocking out exams with the
best of ‘em! Elsa Monge DeGroot
is happily relocated in Dallas,
where she is enjoying working in
marketing for Chili’s International
and enjoying getting settled in
her new digs and her new neighborhood. Lindsey Coates is still
doing amazing counseling work
in Orlando; she has just joined a
new practice in Orlando (as their
first female counselor!) and she
continues to do counseling and
ministry at a women’s prison in
Orlando, where she is also teaching life and emotion-management skills. She is also teaching
44 |
and lecturing around Orlando on
therapeutic issues, including an
upcoming seminar on addiction, alcoholism and substance
abuse. We are so proud of her
courageous and generous work
she is doing in her community.
In New Orleans, Laura Hettinger
and her husband George bought
a 100-year-old house. They are
enjoying the perks and perils of
home ownership, and Laura continues to work as a legal secretary,
with a calligraphy business on the
side—y’all should definitely send
projects her way! I can personally
attest that she does great work.
In Memphis, Leslie Guinn Jerkins
and her husband Jonathan have
just welcomed baby number
three: George Raymond Jerkins
was born in May and we are delighted to welcome him into our
Class of 2002 family. Congrats on
a beautiful family to a wonderful
mother! In related and exciting
news, both Juliette and Molly
Jerkins will be starting St. Mary’s
in the fall. Hooray for our newest
turkeys, too! Also in Memphis is
De Beazley Ervin, where she has
gone back to full-time working at
Baptist Women’s hospital, where
she is working the over-night
shift while spending daytimes
with her son Grayson. What an
amazing and generous schedule—her family is so lucky to have
her, as are all the women that
she cares for! Melissa Lawson
Romero, her husband Carlos and
their daughter Etta continue to
thrive in Colorado. Melissa continues to work as a clerk at the
Court of Appeals, and she is looking to represent kids in adoption
and foster care proceedings when
her clerkship ends. She is also
guest-lecturing for class at Denver
University’s Graduate School of
Social Work (the Law in Social
Work Practice) and is contemplating co-writing a book on the same
topic. Anna Coplon Suen is still
enjoying life in Madison, Wis.,
despite the winters. She has just
started a new job as a buyer for
Thermo Fisher, which provides
scientific supplies. She and husband Garret are anticipating some
exciting changes in their lives
in the new future, and we are so
excited for them! Nicole Osborne
Steck continues to show us all up
with her hard work and athletic
prowess—she has recently completed a 10-mile race, and she has
begun training for a marathon! In
the meantime, she is keeping
busy at Glaxo-Smith-Kline and
running after her adorable son,
Braden. In Lexington, Kentucky
Katie Ross has just started a new
job, as the Executive Director of
the Kentucky Horse Council; it’s
a big change from her previous
job in law, but she’s loving the
chance to work with horses and
get professional credit for all her
time logged at horse shows. Congrats to Katie! Finally, I continue
to live the nomadic life, schlepping between New Haven and
New York City, now with a baby in
tow! Victoria and I are spending
two nights a week in Manhattan and the rest of our time in
Connecticut, while I continue to
slave away a the grindstone of big
bank corporate law, and Robbie
continues to thrive at divinity
school. One more year of this
crazy schedule for us. And then?
Who knows! It’s always lovely to
hear from everybody. Please stay
in touch!!

I can’t wait to see her when she
is here in September! Suzie and

Texas as well as working with
an entrepreneur and investor in
private equity. Vi West is enjoying
travelling around the country as
part of her role as the Training
Manager for the Pei Wei brand.
Kelly Sandefer and her husband
Andrew married in Highlands,
N.C. last October and have just
closed on their first house. After
a very brief spell in Toronto,
Elizabeth Fong is now living in
Chicago working as a surgical
nurse at Rush University Medical
Center. She is looking forward
to running the Chicago Rock N
Roll half marathon in July with
Emily Edwards. Mary Kneeland
Metcalf is looking forward to her
wedding in January after which
she will gain the last name ‘Nice’.
Very nice! As for me, I am still
living and working in Oxford as
a teacher and college counselor,
planning a trip with my mother to
Riga, Latvia this summer and production managing for a comedy
group who will be performing at
the Fringe in Edinburgh in August.
I can’t wait for the next round
of updates from our wonderful,
talented class.

Ah, spring. That time of celebrations, new beginnings, storming through parking lots in
Braveheart attire, and posing
for photos that prompted many
a college friend to ask, “Were
you all getting married?” Jokes
aside, there is much to celebrate.
Lauren Brooks Foti and husband
Alex welcomed their first child,
Michael Alexander Foti. They are
enjoying living in Roswell, Ga., an
Atlanta suburb. Martha Ferguson
Burke and husband Chris are
excited to welcome Baby Burke

John North, whom she hopes
sisters Kat Kostka ‘00 and Mamie
Kostka ‘06 can come visit soon
for his first birthday! Elisabeth
Sandlin Maynard and husband
Hunter welcomed their second

brain injury. After she graduates
in May with her Doctorate of
Physical Therapy from Western
Carolina University, Connor
and her husband will move to
Oxford, Miss., where he will start
Ole Miss’ Medicinal Chemistry
program on the PhD track. Huge
congrats to all! In the world of
academia, Elizabeth Jemison
soon will finish her PhD in
Religion at Harvard and will begin
as Assistant Professor of Religion
at Clemson University. She and
husband Andrew are excited to
move to Greenville, where she’ll
get to see Elizabeth Stevenson,
who recently ran the Cooper River
Bridge Run in Charleston and is
looking forward to a 5K and summer break! Also, Elizabeth reports
that she and Sasha Castroverde
both survived the 110 inches of
snow that hit Boston over the
winter, which is an accomplishment in itself. Camille Wingo
soon will graduate with her MBA
from Duke and is excited that
Shane Battier will be the commencement speaker. Camille then
will work for Frito-Lay in Dallas,
where Victoria Luke Morich
happens to be working this summer while pursuing her MBA in
finance and strategy at Georgia
Tech. Victoria also is about to celebrate the arrival of her brother’s
third son. Rachel Bearman is now
the Rabbi of Temple B’nai Chaim
in Georgetown, Conn., where she
officiates at life cycle events like
Bar and Bar Mitzvah services. She
is enjoying working with the local
interfaith clergy and preparing
her 10th graders for their confirmation service. Rachel also has
an awesome, funny dog named
Vashti. Shelby Deeney has a new
job as a Deputy Colorado State
Public Defender in the Appellate
Division. She recently ran a half
marathon at Zion National Park
and is gearing up for another
one at Rocky Mountain National
Park in August. Brittany Johnson

Steve Cohen, Brittany will be doing federal relations for the March
of Dimes. Go get ‘em, ladies!
Natalie Hartmann is still loving
life in Atlanta and is working as
a Physical Therapist for the inpatient rehab department at DeKalb
Medical Center in Decatur, Ga.
Also in Atlanta is Blair Carter Tait,
who enjoys seeing Natalie and
Laine often. Blair and husband
Tom still dote on their Westie,

Monica area middle and high
schools. As for George and me,
we’re planning to move to Tampa/
St. Petersburg, Fla. this summer
to be closer to family and to The
Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I’ll
be buying stock in SPF 400. Hope
y’all will visit!

to us by Megan Bailey and her
unrivaled video editing skills,
was a series of hilarious, bizarre,
and often frightening throwback
videos. These videos took us back
to the days in which we portrayed young males, in complete
obfuscation of our true identities,
with zest and aplomb; gave us
a window into the clandestine
world of BC calculus, wheretofore
only the math-iest of Turkeys
had gone; and provided definitive proof that the Class of 2005
carried out the wiliest, wildest,
and most legendary senior prank
ever: dressing up as pirates and
scattering sticks throughout the
parking lot (pirate ship wreckage, duh). Ladies of ’05, we can’t
be tamed. The Head of School
himself, Albert Throckmorton,
graced the Friday night soirée
with his presence, and was
regaled with tales of the glory of
days of old by Catie Jane Berger,
official co-keeper of ’05 lore (along
with Laura Blount, if you had to
ask). Mr. Throckmorton was a delightful and indispensable party
46 |
guest: he took our group photo
and coined our reunion hashtag,
in one fell swoop. Our class has
much to report besides reunion
memories. Sarah Atkinson
Ball and husband Erik are now
parents to two kittens, Withnail
Tony Allen Ball and Terence “Li’l
T” Ball. Withnail came from the
streets as a tiny kitten (read: he’s
a rescue), and, notwithstanding his
heart of gold, attacked his parents
ferociously and without ceasing
for his first few (feral) months as
a Ball. Enter Li’l T of the illustrious House of Mews, who became
the perfect wrestling mate for
thenceforth gentle-as-a-lamb
Withnail. Aptly-named Li’l T has
grown in mid-section but not in
limb length, and Sarah hopes this
pattern continues. He looks like
a mini, chunky version of Claire
Arnett Sumner’s cat Roy, who is
still striving toward that 25-pound
mark. We believe in you, Roy! And
we love you just as you are. In
more normal news, Erin Nolen
Brafford and husband Penn
moved to Chicago, and Erin has
been working in the Production
Office of the NBC television show,
Chicago Fire. In the spring, she had
a lovely brunch with classmates
Margo McCawley and Danielle
Lewis who are also in Chicago!
Lizzy Rhea Cook graduated from
Covenant Theological Seminary
with a Masters of Religion and
Culture, and she says, “Every time
I graduate from an institution of
higher ed, it feels like a miracle
haha!” Marianne Rizk still loves
life in Iowa City, especially now
that it is warmer. This fall, she
will begin conducting group
and individual therapy with
veterans at the Iowa City VA
Hospital, and she will continue
working on her dissertation. She
says getting closer to earning
her PhD feels great. Marianne
is also SUPER excited to love on
Rainey Ray Segars’ baby and to
become a surrogate auntie! Emily
Templeton Gray is still working in
the ER, and she and her husband
love living in midtown Memphis!
Alison West Pettus said she had
fun at the reunion, and they cele-
brated their white lab Piper’s first
birthday in the spring. Elizabeth
Tipton Musick graduated from
the University of Montana School
of Law in May and moved to
Bozeman, Mont., where she is
working for Oracle doing contract
negotiations for cloud storage
sales. She and her husband Matt
are in the process of buying their
first house! Hillary Edwards
Musice will return for her 11th
summer as a counselor at the
Tennessee Girls State Program.
Why, you ask? Hillary answers
your question with a question:
“Who doesn’t love citizenship and
civic responsibility?!?!” Touchée,
Hillary. Touchée. Grace Jensen
Knight and husband Ethan have
big news—they are preparing
to welcome a baby boy in June,
and daughter Mary can’t wait to
be a big sister! Elizabeth Pryor
Batchelor Calkins was thrilled to
have the chance to see everyone
at the reunion “before the USMC
ships the husband and [Liz] off
to Okinawa, Japan for the next
three years!” Liz is also happy
about the recent expiration of
her passport, the unflattering
photo on which has long elicited
expressions of sympathy from
customs agents around the world.
Liz, you show those Walgreens
photographers who the model
is now! Faye Kenner Rainer and
husband Jimbo are new parents
to Ruth Ellen Rainer, born in
the wee hours in March. Faye is
snatching hours of sleep here
and there, changing millions of
diapers, and washing gazillions
of bottles—but thrilled to be a
mother. We are so happy for you,
Faye! Miles Kueffner is still working in “sunny, springy, non-rainy
Seattle” in organ donation. Miles
stalks dogs that are up for adoption on the internet and talks
herself out of bringing all of them
home. Lest we fear that she has
given up, Miles wants all to know
that her dream of pursuing an
advanced degree in underwater
basket weaving is alive and well.
And last, but not least—nay, the
most notable alumnae accomplishment of 2015—Rebecca
Harris swept the 2015 Tony Allen
Karaoke Contest, receiving a perfect score from every judge. Her
flawless performance earned her
the honor of singing alongside
the Grindfather himself. Rebecca
selected “Whoomp, There It Is”
to sing with Tony, a choice the
Commercial Appeal described
as “just about perfect.” This has
not been Rebecca’s only brush
with fame of late. Another recent
Commercial Appeal article quoted
Rebecca at length on tips for
overcoming the “late-night Griz
morning-after doldrums” and her
approach to “winding down” after
a game. She’s one to watch, ladies
(and gentlemen). This ain’t no
fifteen minutes.
