DORIS MAGSAYSAY HO, President and CEO There are some people who do not ask questions. They ride the jeep without caring why the fare is up by P2, they do not wonder why their computer is sometimes slow as a snail, and they do not marvel at how they can reach anyone anywhere in the world with their amazing mobile phone. These people have little curiosity at the world around them. As Magsaysay People, we are innovators and we need to take a passionate interest in the ‘how, what, and why’ of the things around us. Saya baik-baik saja, terima kasih! (That’s “How are you?” and “I’m fine, thank you!” in Bahasa, the national language of Indonesia.) Last March 14, Costa Allegra visited the Port of Jakarta, Indonesia. It was welcomed by PT Meranti Magsaysay employees, specifically from Costa fleet and Recruitment, who were invited to a tour inside the ship later on. The Indonesia-based MPs prepared and provided transportation to the families of the crew onboard so that they can personally welcome their family member in Jakarta. The gathering that day was a simple yet heart-warming experience for the MPs, crew, and their families, which everyone looks forward to happening soon. With a report from Jill Reyes, PT Meranti Magsaysay JUMP 05 ON THE Cover Three outstanding MPs soar high F or their dedication, exemplary service, and distinguished work in their respective fields, Merlyn L. Agad, Erwin R. Recaido, and Vic- Merlyn L. Agad toria Regina L. Pineda were given the Shining Star awards at the MAGSAYSAY 60th Anniversary last December 22, 2008. These individuals are stalwarts in their commitment to their duties, taking the initiative to satisfy office and community needs for the betterment of MAGSAYSAY. The three are not the only awardees, but they stand out as employees who have carved a niche that only they can fill in the company. Merlyn L. Agad received the Shining Star award for Responsibility through her relentlessness as an accounting and admin supervisor not just for Visayas Erwin R. Recaido but for Mindanao as well. As part of the NMCCLI Cagayan de Oro, she also handles other branches, namely; Davao, General Santos, and Cebu. She shuttles to and from her home base to keep opera- Victoria Regina L. Pineda tions running smoothly. Multiple responsibilities and tremendous pressures brought on by her demanding work did not hinder Agad from effectively executing her tasks. Her gained expertise coupled with her ability to lead others has resulted to the improvement of office operations. Agad successfully sorted out and significantly lessened the once problematic collectibles in her region. Despite the scope of her duty, Agad does not lose sight of people. She treats people as she would like to be treated and leads by example. She shows sincere concern for the company and its people constantly. The Shining Star award for Responsibility was also given to Erwin R. Recaido, a man who wears two hats for MMC – CMO CF3/Masterbulk WestfalLarsen; he is both a fleet manager and a manning assistant. He willingly assumed both jobs and saw it as an opportunity to put his skills in the service of others. His award is well-earned, as he often performs his duties with minimal supervision and with no assistant to help him carry-out daily operations. A self-starter, Recaido is a top-notch employee who always keeps himself ready to answer the call of duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Taking his work to heart, he serves as an inspiration to others as he goes the extra mile to accomplish his responsibilities and would even say that “everyday is a working day.” This hardworking individual is driven by a simple JUMP 06 motivation; he cares about his work, about his coworkers and his family. And with 15 years on the job, Recaido wishes nothing more but to, continue what he started. Victoria Regina L. Pineda on the other hand, deserves her Shining Star as much as the aforementioned awardees but for a different reason: she earned the Shining Star for Creativity. Pineda’s innovative approach in instituting a new and different system allowed customers to save Php5.5M a year on operating cost for each vessel. She is a true problem-solver who understands the customer’s perspective and meets their needs. She has the ability to manage resources wisely and use them to cultivate better processes. Pineda has never let limitations dim her vision of unparalleled service. She persistently seeks for ingenious ways to develop operations further and takes on new challenges to find opportunities to create positive changes. Pineda does what needs to be done excellently. She pours utmost dedication to her work continuously and to the best of her abilities. Her initiative turned her into a reliable employee who makes work exceptional and efficient. These three Shining Star awardees went beyond doing their jobs well. They approached work with a “can-do” attitude and saw challenges as a chance to make a difference. They encourage us to make a commitment to excellence and develop a passion for dedicated service. Once again, congratulations to Merlyn L. Agad, Erwin R. Recaido, and Victoria Regina L. Pineda for your inspiring work.
