IT’S A GREEK LIFE!
The splendor of Greece is returning to Palm Desert. It’s the 13th
Annual Palm Desert Greek Festival, hosted by the community of St.
George Greek Orthodox church, starting Saturday, February 28th at
11:00 am and ending Sunday night, March 1st at 9:00 pm. This is the one
event not to miss this year! OPA!
In celebration of the13th Palm Desert Festival, the Greeks are
throwing a party! Greek Music, Greek dancing! Need a lesson? Watch
our award winning folk dance groups as they perform, or grab a napkin
and join the line!
As you enter the Festival, you will be instantly
transported from Palm Desert to the allure of the
simple Greek countryside and the magic of the
Greek Isles. There are neither quaint coastal
villages, nor the blue water of the Aegean for
your eyes to see. But, as you walk about the
festival, we’ll fill you and your soul with the
“GREEK WAY” of life. Greeks like no others,
tend to live life with greater zest and intensity in
all their activities. They call it: Kefi (“Ke-Fi” )
(n.,Greek) - Liveliness, intense and especially
ecstatic happiness. The expression of such a
feeling “Ke-fi” is what you will experience during
the Palm Desert Greek Festival. The Festival offers a weekend celebration of authentic Greek foods, including plenty of “mezedes” (appetizers),
traditional folk dancing, live Greek Music, shopping, a Kidz area, cooking
demonstrations, church tours and much, much more!
However the Greek way of life includes “Parea”. So bring your friends,
the more, the better.
Parea (n., Greek) - Good company, the enjoyment and camaraderie of
many friends, a group of friends. Greeks find little enjoyment or
happiness in spending time alone. They love the buzz of being out and
about in the company of others. Their happiness is not complete unless
they can enjoy it surrounded by a Parea. Greeks love moving about their
neighborhoods, villages, towns and cities in these Pareas, eating,
drinking, laughing, chatting, shouting, and teasing each other. They are
always ready to add to the company congenial acquaintances, and even
strangers encountered along the way.
Greeks enjoying Parea are all around you, when you are at the Palm
Desert Greek Festival. Just take a look around; everyone is having a good
time! You will recognize and feel Parea immediately! It’s contagious!
Come join our Greek Life. Stroll our church grounds, soak in all the
wafting aromas, sights and bouzouki sounds. Drop by, visit the Kouzina
and see what’s cooking! Need a breather? Sit under the palm trees, blue
skies, desert sunshine and enjoy the mountain scenery & live music, while
sipping on Greek coffee. It’s rich enough to keep you up dancing for 2
days. OPA!
Hungry? Stop at the Taverna grill area and
have a world famous Gyro, or some
imported Loukanico sausage. But, save
some room for a combination dinner,
or Lamb chops with Greek Fries and
those mouth-watering, Greek pastries.
OPA!

AWARD WINNING
GREEK FOLK DANCE GROUPS TO PERFORM
The “Greek Life” would never be complete without dance, song & music. This
year we are proud to host two award
winning, Greek Folk Dance Troupes from
two local southern California churches, St.
Anthony’s of Pasadena and St. Nectarios
of Covina.
The Greek Folk dance youth groups sole
purpose is to teach the children about their
Hellenic cultural heritage through Dance,
song and fellowship. The

generations by their ancestors.
The dance today has retained
much of its identity from ancient times, as has the Greek language.
It is a living vital force in the Greek way of life, and its spirit
brings people together with a true feeling of camaraderie. It’s a
fundamental aspect of the Greek religious festivities, national
holidays, and family celebrations such as weddings and baptisms
- events that center around the church and family life of Orthodox
Christian parishioners.
There are over 200 hundred dances from Greece. The dances
traditionally are divided into three main groups, and each dance
reflects the culture, customs and traditional costumes of the
particular region. A dance is either from the islands (Nessiotika);
the mainland (Demotika); or popular (Laika), meaning it is danced
throughout Greece - the islands and the mainland.
The most popular form of the Greek folk dance is the open circle,
with regular handhold position, moving counter-clockwise. Next
is the straight line with arms on shoulders of adjacent dancers. The
third form is the curved-line dance with the basket-weave hold.
When performing, the dancers wear traditional Greek costumes
from the area where the dances originated.
The dance groups compete annually at the
Regional (FDF) Folk Dance Festival as
well as performing at local
Greek Festivals throughout
Southern California. Clap
along, join in, dance and
enjoy these talented young
people as they perform the
best in “A Greek Life”.

“Kalos oree-seteh”! That’s the Greek word for
“WELCOME”. Literally, it means, “It is well that you are seen!”
Taking to heart this literal meaning of the Greek word for “welcome”,
we are saying that it is well for us to see you, knowing that you
are healthy and happy. It’s an expression of caring love.
In today’s world in which survival itself is now a key
issue in the homes of so many people, we thank God that you
are healthy and happy, because you mean much to us.
And, the reason for that is because we are a
community and we need each other in order to
survive and be well. In facing the difficulties of
present everyday living, we realize that “we are
all in it together” – and, together, we will
overcome all of our many challenges. That
is why we greet each other with the phrase:
“Kalos oree-seteh!”
That we need each other is a basic truth that
we must never overlook. We at St. George Greek
Orthodox Church are proud to have as our neighbor the Desert
Cancer Foundation, which serves the needs of many who are battling
cancer and who are not able to always afford the treatment that is
necessary for them to survive.
Another example of “being well” as a result of “seeing our
neighbor” is seen in the tee-shirts of our volunteers. We needed these
tee-shirts in order to identify our volunteers from out of a crowd of
people. The Desert Arc Organization, which is dedicated to minister to
the needs of our handicapped fellow citizens, provided these tee-shirts for
our volunteers, as we, in turn, support their efforts. “They are “well” and
they are “well” because of our relationship.”
In-and-Out Mobility is a business existing only a block away from
our parish. The service that is provided by this business is a tremendous
contribution to our parish members and our community, in general – not
only in terms of helping physically handicapped people in our community
to become mobile, but because of the charitable spirit that comes with
their efforts.
So, you see that it is truly “well for us to see each other”, because
we care for each other and, by caring for each other, we are all well –
together we create a world that is safe from danger; safe from despair
and safe from destruction.
In this spirit, then, we welcome you to our 13th Annual Greek
Festival, 2009! It is well for you to “be Greek for a day!” It is an honor
for all of us today to enjoy life together.
Wishing you all the blessings of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ,
I remain, Yours in His Service,

What’s up with Greek Honey, Greek Olive Oil and Greek Yogurt?
Seems everywhere you go today people are talking about Greek foods. Even our traditional Greek yogurt has
made its way into mainstream American culture. The question is why? Other than the obvious, it’s delicious.
What’s all the fuss about?
These are major factors of the Mediterranean diet followed by the people of Greece and specifically rural
Crete who scored the highest of all in heart health in several international studies. Incorporating these
elements of the Greek diet into everyday menus, combined with increased physical activity, can have a
positive effect on heart health and weight control. Many of today’s popular fad diets, such as the new,
“Flat Belly” diet boast the health benefits of a Greek diet.
Expert suggestions for optimum health are lean meats, fish, fresh veggies, greens and citrus fruits, along with
increased whole grains, wheat and barleys, plus a limited use of sugars and artificial sweeteners. The
additional positive effects of Olive oil and a daily dose of yogurt to add healthy bacterium to our diets as a
means of free radical disease control. All are naturally occurring in a Greek Life and diet. Don’t forget the
heart healthy occasional red wine, too.

Olive oil is one of the “healthy” fats, meaning it’s a monounsaturated fat or MUFA. This type
of fat can actually lower the LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, and in 2004, the FDA recognized claims
that replacing other fats with olive oil can help reduce heart disease risk. The recent claim about
MUFA’s, touted by the “flat Belly” diet explains why the Greek way of Life is the way to live.
Greek Olive oil is one of the finest, highest quality virgin oils available. Ancient Greek warriors
drank Olive oil before a night of drinking to insulate their stomach from any ill effects.
Increase Barley Products (and Other Whole Grains)
It’s long been known that whole grains can help reduce the risk of heart disease, but just
recently, the FDA chimed in once again to recognize claims that barley and barley products do
indeed reduce the risk of coronary disease. Barley and other whole grains are an important part
of the Cretan diet, used in cracked grain breads and our famous barley rusks. Barley is used in
Orthodox Church memorials in a prepared dish called Koliva.
Some say the tradition is 1000’s of years old. It’s just another
element of a Greek Life.
Eat Those Leafy Greens
Our Cretan diet is based largely on vegetables and spinach, with
no shortage of dark leafy greens, both those we pick in the wild
and those we buy. Leafy greens contain lutein, known to prevent
clogged arteries (atherosclerosis). Don’t be too surprised Greeks
even eat Dandelion Greens on a regular basis. Add a few Greek
olives to our fresh salads and we had a natural MUFA long
before anyone knew what a MUFA was.

We couldn’t even imagine a Greek life without lemons &
oranges. Greeks have found ways to utilize lemons in everything
from our family recipe Lemon rice soups to chicken. Orange
zest is used as a secret ingredient throughout our cooking and
pastries. Today Citrus is touted for it’s quantity of cold fighting
Vitamin C. Greeks have been using citrus medicinally since
history began. Citrus is all part of a Greek life.
Don’t Forget the Legumes
Legumes are that group of beans, peas, and lentils that are high
in fiber and combat heart disease.

Welcome To Our 2009 Annual St. George Greek Orthodox Festival
This is the 13th year of our annual church festival. It is a great honor for
us to welcome so many of our neighbors and friends in the Coachella
Valley and beyond. Our festival is an act of love through the dedication
and hard work of the men and women of our congregation. The women,
many of whom are members of our Philoptochos Society, worked
tirelessly for countless hours preparing the foods and pastries you will
enjoy. It is this unity of love and dedication from the members of our
congregation that invite you to experience the essence of our Greek
culture. Take in the smell of the food, taste the delicate pastries, delight
in the sounds and dancing of the Greek music, take a tour through the
church and experience the majesty of the iconography and the fragrant

allows us to expand the vision of our parish ;as we strive to develop plans helping more
charitable causes locally, regionally and nationally. Our parish council, our clergy and all our
parishioners sincerely appreciate your participation in our festival and wel come you to “live

History About Orthodoxy
Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism are the two oldest Christian faiths in existence.
Until the year 1054, the two churches were united as the one and only Christian Faith. Both
churches share the honor of true Apostolic succession: Eastern Orthodox through the Apostle
Andrew and Roman Catholic by way of Apostle Peter.
Worldwide, there are over 170 million members of the Orthodox faith and growing.
The Orthodox liturgy practiced today has been tenaciously preserved in its original form for
almost 2000 years. Here, at St. George the only difference is services are typically 80% English and 20% Greek.
Many Orthodox churches are culturally different; Greek, Russian, Lebanese, Korean, Ethiopian, Japanese, Romanian..., but the faith is
all identically, Orthodox. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, with over 6 million members, is under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew who is the 330th apostolic successor to the church founded in Constantinople by the Apostle Andrew.
Church tours are offered during the Greek Festival several times a day. Priests will be on hand to answer your questions.
We encourage everyone to take a church tour and enjoy the incredible beauty of our award winning, Byzantine mosaic icons and experience a taste of Orthodoxy.

GYROS,, oh those GYROS!
GYROS
By far, the most popular eatery. Greeks proudly stake our claim for introducing to the culinary world, GYROS, the savory lamb & beef
strips wrapped in a pita. It’s served warm with juicy tomatoes, onions and refreshing “Tzaziki” Greek yogurt, garlic & cucumber sauce.
So you see, the Greeks invented wraps & rollups way before they became mainstream on menus. Be prepared to wait a few minutes
for this one. Come see Niko and his team at the grill.
“KOUZINA” (Restaurant cuisine) Complete Greek Dinners
Always a crowd pleaser. The dinner plate is a variable feast, not to be missed. We are offering heaping entrees with your choice of
Greek Style Souvlaki in either Chicken or pork, Both are served with rich Pastitsio (baked macaroni w/ beef filing and Romano cheese,
topped with béchamel sauce), Tyropita (triangular shaped cheese filled pastry puff) , two Dolmathes (beef and rice filled grape leaves),
“Salata” a Greek Village salad and a dinner Roll. Don’t forget to dance a little and make room for those heavenly Greek Pastries and
Ouzo later.
ZYMARIKO
Oh, those heavenly pastries only the Greeks can make. That world famous Baklava. The rich smooth custard baked Bougatsa,
Kourabiethes, the melt in your mouth butter cookies dusted with powdered sugar. The Melomakarona honey cookies with a hint of
orange and topped with chopped walnuts. The traditional Koulourakia cookies we all grew up on and introducing two new treats for your
pleasure, Diples, a rolled pastry, honey dipped and sprinkled with just the right amount of cinnamon and walnuts and Pasta Flora, a
delicate lattice topped tart filled with fruit jam sure to please everyone It’s extra popular with the children,
because it doesn’t contain any nuts. Don’t forget to add a Greek coffee at our new Kafenia coffee shop.
Again this year our “AHEPA” Men’s Philanthropic Club will be making “Never on Sundae’s”,
delicious vanilla ice cream sundae’s topped with Baklava pieces. YUM! Check out their booth, too.
LOUKOUMATHES
Complete your adventure of Greece with a little Ouzo or Metaxa and a plate of hot Loukoumathes, the
mouth watering, feather light golden puffs of pastry drenched with honey, sprinkled with cinnamon &
walnuts. Take-out orders by the dozen are the norm at this festival.
ZORBA’S BAR
In the true “Zorba the Greek” tradition we have Greek wines, Metaxa, Ouzo and Greek Beer to help you share our feeling of “Kefi”.
For those of you a little less adventurous we have a wide array of American Beer, wine, soft drinks and water available.
ENTERTAINMENT GREEK STYLE
MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC
What would Greek life be without music & dance? To a Greek, life is a gift that needs to be shared with good music,
dance, food, family and “Parea” friends. Your journey to Greece wouldn’t be complete without the exciting sounds of
“Levenia” our traditional Greek Bouzouki, Dance Band. Don’t forget to take a CD home to continue the Party.
FOLK DANCE GROUPS
Come watch and be amazed at the talent of these young people; dancing the traditional, authentic dances of their
ancestors. In native costumes indicative of the area the dance originates from. We are pleased to be hosting two,
award winning troupes this year from throughout Southern California. OPA!
HERCULES KIDZ ZONE
Due to popular demand, the children’s area welcomes back the incredible Bounce House, Giant Inflatable Slide and the Spartacus
Gladiator ring. Bring the kids and purchase an all day pass to let them play, while you dance. Be sure to visit the St. George Youth
booth and get your face painted, while supporting our Church Youth Summer Camping and Community Service projects.
“AGORA” MARKETPLACE
What trip to the Islands would be complete without shopping? We have vendors offering amazing kiosk with everything from Mediterranean Groceries to Artwork, to Jewelry to Byzantine style Icons. Be sure to stop by the Kafenia’ and pick up a Greek coffee, Iced
Frappe, or fruit smoothie while you shop.
“BAKALIKO” General Store
Want to take a taste of Greece home with you? The Bakaliko is our answer to the old-time Greek general store. Here the shelves are
stocked with food and sundry items from Greece, including ingredients needed for Greek food and pastry preparation.
CHURCH TOURS
No Greek life would be complete without the richness & fullness of the Eastern
Orthodox faith. A complimentary, guided tour of our beautiful edifice is a treat in itself.
St George Greek Orthodox Church of the Desert is a lifetime recipient of the “Desert
Beautiful” award. You’ll be amazed at the classic, Byzantine style Mosaics contained in
the incredible iconography. Experience a traditional, ancient Christian place of worship.
Have a question? Just ask! Our Priests are on hand to answer questions and introduce
you to the faith of Orthodox Christianity and its rich history. See schedule for tour times,
Come early, as it fills up quickly.

The Cretan (and Greek) diet is filled with fabulous dishes using many varieties of legumes. Comfort food in a Greek life includes
Fassolia, better known to Americans as Giant Butter Beans.
High Protein, bone building calcium - Dairy
Greeks love cheese. Greeks have dozens of different style cheeses for just as many occasions. Best known is Feta Cheese. Found
in everything from salads, to omelets. Greeks also use eggs in their Mousaka, pastries and soups.
No breakfast would be complete without Greek yogurt. Thicker and smoother than American varieties and more like soft serve
ice cream without the sweetness. The health benefits of Greek Yogurt are amazing and it has several cooking advantages also,
including the fact that it will not separate when baked. Greek Yogurt is gluten free, safe for diabetics and vegetarians, and with
the 2% variety being only 120 calories a cup, it’s perfect for a healthy diet. Greek yogurt has twice the active cultures for a
healthy digestive system. Try some Tzatziki cucumber/yogurt sauce today with a delicious, hot Gyro. You’ll never go back to sour cream.
What about the sweets?
Greeks love their pastries, especially that famous Baklava and we eat enough honey to keep the bees on overtime. Greek honey is the finest honey
in the world. Are we boasting? Isn’t honey just honey. No, really there is a difference. (See Greek Honey article below) We also love Black cherries,
vanilla and figs. Most of the Greek sweets and deserts are made with the addition of nuts and sesame seeds. Opps, that’s more MUFA’s. Think the
ancient Greeks were onto a trend?
Keep It Natural, Keep it Greek.
A well-known Greek food expert and author, Aglaia Kremezi, says that the art of traditional Greek cooking is taking a natural, fresh ingredient and
doing the least possible to it. Refined and processed foods don’t help a healthy heart. Keeping the basic structure of food is important, and sticking
with foods that are recognizable in their original form is the key.
Of course, the Greek diet also includes meats (chicken, lamb, pork) and fish, but generally in smaller quantities, and less frequently. We also incorporate garlic and onions everywhere possible (we really like them), and they are heart healthy additions as well.
So eat, drink and Be Greek for a Day, or two. It’s a Greek life and it’s healthy too. KALI OREXI! (Good Eating)

Tudor Ranch, Inc. employs the services of Unifrutti of America, Inc. to sell our grapes all over the world. The company is based in Philadelphia, PA,
but during our grape harvest they send a staff out to our facilities in Mecca, California. The staff works together with Marion Tudor and the rest of
the Tudor Ranch office, to ship on the average 1.2 million boxes of grapes per year. Andreas P. Economou has headed the company since 1984, and
has built it into one of the premiere produce sales firms in the United States. The company has branched out to other produce as well as other
countries like Chile, Spain, and South Africa. Unfrutti sells Tudor Ranch grapes in the United States to major stores such as Wal-Mart, Vons, Kroger,
and Albertsons. Tudor Ranch, Inc. has had the good fortune of being partners with Unifrutti for over 10 years.
Why Greek Honey is Uniquely, the best in the world.
The flavor of honey comes from the nectar of the plants and flowers absorbed by the bee. The quality of the honey itself depends on the
type of the plant or flower visited by the bee. The best honey comes from the thyme, lavender, rosemary, lime-tree and orange-tree.
The main factor for successful honey productive areas is the variety of habitats able to give the adequate quality of honey.
From this point of view, Greece is one of the most suitable places, if not the most, for apiculture due
to its rich flora and temperate climate. For that reason Greek Honey is uniquely, the very best. Greek
honey has specific physical and chemical characteristics. Its supreme quality reflects the country’s long
sunshine periods and the abrupt changes in the landscape. This special landscape makes Greek flora so
rich, that from the 7500 different species of plants growing in Greece, 850 of them are found exclusively there.
That is the explanation why certain varieties of honey (e.g. Thyme Honey) do not exist anywhere else in the world
and is truly of exceptional quality and unique taste.
As a result of the particularities of Greek landscape, the honey comes from a large variety of plants. Greeks have always been exporting
honey. It is a traditional Greek product with many productive areas throughout the country.
The best honey in Greece comes from thyme, by far the best honey in the world.
Due to country shape, climate and unique flora, the apiculture in Greece is highly developed with long-lasting tradition, producing in excess all the
top varieties of honey. The country’s honey is World Famous giving Greece one of the top positions in world. The product itself is blessed by nature.
Honey helps maintain a healthy digestive organism balance.
As part of our every day Greek diet it is very healthy for breakfast, spread on the bread or mixed with milk, yoghurt and cereals. Honey is a source
of high energy and as such is perfect for an energy-boost mixed in our coffee or tea instead of sugar. It is also used in many recipes for sauces & for
making mouth watering, delectable pastries like that incredible Baklava.
Once you try Greek honey, no other will compare. It’s part of a Greek Life!
