A Night Beneath the Stars

As the first Saturday in May approaches,
everyone rushes to finish up the last of his or her prom
errands. With extravagant dresses, tuxedos, flowers,
and all the other prom necessities, this occasion can be
quite stressful, but also very exciting.
On May 5, 2007 GHS held their annual prom at
“The Inn” at Virginia Tech. Couples entered a sea of
black and sliver decorations, to match this year’s
theme “A Night Beneath the Stars.” Doors opened at 6
p.m. and couples tried to arrive early to beat the rush
for pictures.

flashed a smile to have a picture to remember the night
by. When pictures were out of the way, everyone
breathed a sigh of relief and focused on the fun. Dinner
was served at 7:15, with a variety of dishes that were
pleasing to all. As soon as everyone finished up and took
a moment to relax, all moved to the dance floor. While
the music played all began to engage in the fun. Whether
it was doing the “Cha Cha Slide” with your best friends
or slow dancing in the arms of the one you love,
everyone left the dance floor with great memories and
definitely a smile. At 10:00 Principle Greg Brown asked
everyone to have a seat to not only recognize the seniors
and their dates, but also to take a moment to reflect and

Then the long awaited announcement of this
year’s king and queen was made. Congratulations
to Meredith Epperly and Jared Brown, who were
crowned the 2007 GHS prom king and queen.
As the excitement of the royalty faded,
everyone merged back to the dance floor to enjoy
the last hour of prom. As the dance slowly came
to an end and this year’s prom song “I’ll Be”, by
Edwin McCain, was played, all said there
goodbyes, grabbed their souvenirs, and headed out
the door. The fun didn’t end there though.

everyone found ways to keep him or herself entertained until it came to an end at 5 a.m. Not
without first handing out more prizes such as $800 cash, X-BOX 360’s, TV’s, gift cards and more!
After the prizes were awarded, exhausted students grabbed their t-shirts and headed home to get
some rest after a long night of fun and many memories to last for years to come.

Recognized Teachers

Ms. Glenna Woodring
April
The Students Active in Education club selected Ms. Glenna Woodring as the April
teacher of the month. Ms. Woodring worked as a substitute teacher from 1991-1995 for
GHS. She also taught for one year at Narrows Elementary School, but has been teaching
reading classes for the last seven years here at GHS. When asked what her favorite aspect
of teaching was, she responded, “helping students to compensate their disability to where
they can learn.” Ms. Woodring’s reason for becoming a teacher was, “when my son was in
the second grade, he started having difficulty comprehending his basal reader. The teacher
asked if they could test him to see if he had a learning disability. The results indicated that
he had a reading comprehension disability. The results lead to him being placed in special
education. After his placement I decided to go back to school and work towards obtaining
a degree in education with a minor in special education.” Ms. Woodring also said, “I then
decided that since my son had such great teachers that helped him to obtain his high school
diploma, I would return the favor and help the special needs students achieve as much as
they possibly could.” Ms. Woodring went to Bluefield State College and graduated in 1991. She is currently taking classes towards
earning a Masters Degree in reading from Concord University. Giles High School students and staff greatly appreciate all that she
does for the school and students and would like to congratulate her on this honor. Good luck! Keep up the great work you do for us!!
Ms. Whitney Matlock
May
Students Active in Education selected Ms. Whitney Matlock as the May teacher of the
month. Ms. Matlock has been teaching at Giles for four years. Her favorite aspect of
teaching is, “knowing that I have made a difference in my students' life and being able to
watch them achieve their goals. I also enjoy being involved in activities going on at GHS,
from sports to clubs. I just like being around the kids.” Ms. Matlock earned her degree
from Radford University. When asked how she came to teach here at GHS Ms. Matlock’s
response was, “I graduated from Giles High School and always dreamed of coming back
here to teach and coach. Mrs. Martin used to make me promise I would come back and
teach in the room next door to her. My dad was also teaching here part time and I thought
it would be neat to be able to teach with him.” Her reason for becoming a teacher was,
“Both of my parents have been involved in education for over 30 years. I have always
looked up to them and wanted to be the kind of role models they were to their students. I
have also always loved math and felt that I could do a good job helping my students
understand the concepts.” Students and faculty alike are very thankful for all Ms. Matlock
has to offer them in their lives and educations. We would also like to congratulate her on
this achievement. Way to go!
Ms. Pam Malabad
Teacher of the Year
GHS students and faculty would like to congratulate Ms. Pam Malabad on being the
recipient of GHS Teacher of the Year! Ms. Malabad has been teaching Earth Science here at
GHS for five years. When asked why she decided to go into education her response was,
“During my time as a graduate student at West Virginia University in Biology I worked as a
graduate teaching assistant. I enjoyed the research that I was conducting but realized that I
loved the teaching environment more. I soon switched programs and ended up earning my
Masters degree in Secondary Science Education.” Before coming to teach at Giles, Ms.
Malabad taught at Charlottesville High School in Charlottesville Virginia. So how exactly
did she end up teaching here? “I had lived in the Blacksburg area one summer and I fell in
love with this place. I always wanted to go back. This area has so much to offer that I love:
hiking, camping, backpacking, caving, canoeing. I was truly fortunate to find a teaching job
in such a magnificent place and to be able to teach alongside such amazing people. I am
really blessed.” Ms. Malabad said that teaching has had a major impact on her life.
“Teaching has definitely changed my life. Teaching has allowed me the opportunity to share
my passion with others. I also have the opportunity to learn new things everyday. I really
love what I do.” Ms. Malabad earned her bachelors degree from Binghamton University in New York in 1991. She then went on to
receive her masters from West Virginia University in 1995. Ms. Malabad’s response to being awarded teacher of the year was, “It is
an enormous honor to be named the Giles County Teacher of the Year. I am so fortunate to have such wonderful support from my coworkers and from the administration here at Giles High School.”

Retiring Teachers!

Mr. Steve Ragsdale
After finishing his 32nd year, Mr. Steve Ragsdale has decided to partially retire, meaning that he hopes to
teach for half a day instead of the whole day next year. I enjoyed receiving the opportunity to sit down and
interview Mr. Ragsdale about his future plans. When asked if he had a favorite teaching memory, Mr.
Ragsdale simply said, “No. I have enjoyed teaching over the years. There are things I have liked and disliked
about it.” Mr. Ragsdale’s response to the question, “Is there anything you dread about retiring?” was, “No. It
will be nice to kick back a little but when you retire it means you’re older, kind of a “mixed bag”.” He says
he will miss, “Nothing particularly. I feel like I have done my thing. Over a period of time you’ll get tired of
things you enjoy. Don’t know that I will miss anything.” Coach Ragsdale added that he is, “looking forward
to at some point being able to do what I want to do instead of have to do, not being quite as restricted. I am
looking forward to hopefully traveling and seeing new things I’d like to see. I love to travel. Doing and
seeing things like that.” The students and staff greatly appreciate all that Coach Ragsdale does for the school
and the services he provides to us. Good luck in your future!
Mrs. Karen Yolton
This year, besides just saying goodbye to the class of 2007, GHS says farewell to one of its
most beloved teachers, Mrs. Karen Yolton. Mrs. Yolton allowed me the opportunity to sit down
and have a heart to heart interview with her about her life here at GHS. She has been teaching
here at GHS since 1977. Through-out her many years spent here Mrs. Yolton has touched the
hearts and lives of many students and has even inspired a few to go into the education field after
high school. After saying her final goodbyes to GHS, Mrs. Yolton plans to grow a garden and
spend time with her husband, saying that she just wants to “let the dust settle”. Mrs. Yolton’s
favorite memory was, “Every year I have favorite moments, when students really excel at a
difficult task and I help them to do something they never did before, it’s great, and after I started
working with seniors I am always so proud at graduation.” When asked if there was anything
she dreaded about retiring, Mrs. Yolton responded, “No, if I dreaded it I wouldn’t retire. I feel
ready to do something else and I am very excited about my replacement.” Mrs. Yolton said the
thing she will miss most after retiring was, “Day to day contact with students and my faculty
and friends.” The teachers and students will greatly miss Mrs.
Yolton and she will forever be embedded in our hearts and
memories of our times here at GHS. Good luck in your future!

Mrs. Pat Bayless

Mrs. Pat Bayless has been the Geometry teacher at Giles High School for
thirty years. “She’s a really good teacher, and she’s really willing to help,” says
Senior Megan Blevins.
“Teaching has always just been something I’ve wanted to do,” Mrs. Bayless
said, in reference to why she became a teacher. Her second grade math teacher
also played a role in her decision. “Just something about the way she taught just
made me want to become a math teacher.”
Surprisingly, she admitted that Geometry was not her first teaching choice.
She said she has always preferred Algebra. Mrs. Bayless mentioned that when she
first came to teach at Giles, the only opening was for Geometry. “I just kind of fell
into it”
During her retirement, Mrs. Bayless said that she plans to spend time with her
grandchildren and just enjoy life. She will miss all of the students and people that
work here. “I’ve enjoyed teaching all these years; it’s never really felt like a job at all.”
Mrs. Phyllis Radford

Mrs. Phyllis Radford has been teaching at Giles High School as a Special
Education teacher for over eighteen years and will be retiring after this year. Mrs.
Radford said that her reason for staying at Giles as long as she did was because
this is where her roots are and her kids were no longer here. Her favorite memory
while here at Giles is being the Special Education teacher and being able to meet
the needs of students and not having to comply to the laws of SOL’s and No Child
Left Behind. After she retires Mrs. Radford plans to travel. Her final comment
was, “I would like to see us teach more classes to reach the needs of more
students, as we used to. All students can not be treated alike.” Mrs. Radford has
been a valuable member of the GHS staff and will be missed for years to come.
Mr. Dave Roberson

Mr. Dave Roberson has been working at GHS for 6 years. He
has also had previous jobs at Narrows, Amherst County, and in
industry, business, human resources, and sales. One thing that he
enjoys most about being a guidance counselor is working with the
students and helping them achieve what they want. After retirement
he plans on taking classes at NRCC and playing golf. Once he
leaves GHS, the one thing he will miss the most is the relationships
with the faculty, staff, and students. Mr. Roberson says that the
hardest part of his job is the constant stress of planning, coordination,
and conducting SOL tests. Thank you for doing such a great job.

Chorale Trip: Destination Florida

On Wednesday, April 18, the Symphonic Chorale and Choral
Ensemble boarded a tour bus to leave for Orlando, Florida. After a
grueling 12 hour drive, the bus finally arrived at Animal Kingdom
where the roller coasters and the attractions beckoned to them.
There were three roller coasters, Expedition Everest, Kali River
Rapids, and Dinosaur, that were ridden numerous times throughout
the day. Other activities were: It’s Tough to be a Bug (a 3D
theatre), Finding Nemo-The Musical, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and
Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade. The ten hours that were spent at
that park flew by quickly, and the Chorale, hot, tired, and
sunburned, boarded the bus to check in at the Ramada Maingate

swimming, eating, sleeping, and singing karaoke.
At 7:30 Friday morning, the whole Chorale met down in the
restaurant, decked out in all Virginia Tech, to eat a full American Breakfast Buffet to energize them for another fun-filled day, this
time at the Magic Kingdom. When entering the park, a replica of an old-fashioned town greeted fifty pairs of eyes. After passing
through the town, Cinderella’s Castle seemed to appear out of nowhere. Of course, the featured rides, Splash Mountain, Thunder
Mountain Railroad, Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain and Haunted Mansion, were quickly tracked down. Many of the parkgoers got fast passes so they could go through the special line that got then through twice as fast. There were more than just rides
though. There was a whole section of the park dedicated to the Cartoons’ abodes, shops, places to eat, and special featured events to
watch. At 3:45 the bus was boarded and soon arrived at Colonial High School where the uniforms were donned and warm-up practice
began. Finally, at 6:00, the Chorale walked onto stage to sing their competition pieces which were: “I am but a Small Voice,” “Joy in
the Morning,” and “Musica Dei.” Once finished, one of the judges came down from his
seat to critique the singing. Once he was finished, the Chorale exited and the Chorale
Ensemble rushed to change into their white shirts and entered the auditorium again to
begin their warm-up and performance. Their songs were: “Sanctus,” “Gloria for all
Seasons,” and “Be Still Jordan.” The same judge came on stage to comment and work
with the Ensemble, and then they were free to go to MGM Studios where they watched
Fantasmic.
Saturday arrived and the group headed over to Epcot to spend the day. The
attractions seemed endless, with different cultures in one area, and several rides, including
Test Track, Mission: SPACE, Maelstrom, and Soarin’. This day seemed more relaxing to
many, with time to leisurely stroll through shops, performances, and chances to meet
Disney characters. At 1:45 the bus was boarded again and transported to backstage Epcot where uniforms were put on and the warmup for the concert. Once comfortable with the sound, the Chorale entered at Future World West Stage where they sang: “I Am But A
Small Voice,” “ Be Still, Jordan,” “Gloria for All Seasons,” “Pledge Of Allegiance,” and “Amazing Grace/ Pachelbel's Canon.” The Chorale
Ensemble also had a chance to sing, where they sang two of their concert pieces, “Be Still Jordan” and “Sanctus.” The audience
applauded and complemented the singers throughout the day when the Chorale returned to Epcot to enjoy the rest of the attractions,
including IllumiNations, a spectacular fireworks display. When they returned to the hotel, the uniforms were hung up for good, no
longer needed for the rest of the trip.
Far too quickly, the last day of Disney came up. Sunday was spent at MGM studios, watching shows including Indiana Jones,
stunt car shows, and more. There were even more rides at this park, including Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Twilight Zone Tower of
Terror, and the Great Movie Ride. At 6:45, the group had to say goodbye to
MGM and headed over to Downtown Disney to shop and enjoy a sit-down
dinner at Planet Hollywood. On the way there, Mr. Marion unveiled the scores
the judges had awarded during the competition. The Chorale received a high
Excellent rating, missing Superior by mere points. The Chorale Ensemble also
earned an incredibly high Excellent rating, missing Superior by less than two
points, much to their disappointment. Mr. Marion could not have been prouder
though. Both groups were awarded first place trophies for their categories,
which will be on display in the Choir room. The participants also received Tshirts, buttons, and a beautiful banner for singing in the park, complements of
the organization that invited them there.
Sadly, the time came for departure. Suitcases were packed, rooms were
checked, keys were turned in, and the bus was boarded for a long trip home.
The ride finally ended when the bus arrived at the high school at 8:45 that

Carrying on the Singing Tradition

Each year, the Symphonic Chorale begins in late July
with Chorale Camp. This is when all new and old members
come together to sing, play games, plan the upcoming year,
and bond with each other. These friendships deepen
throughout the year, but then, as quickly it began, it comes to
a halt. It suddenly hits the seniors that their time in Chorale
is over. It is tough for everyone in the group; losing friends,
section members, and large amounts of talent. A consolation,
however, is that although many people are leaving to start a
new life, there are people to step into their shoes. This year,
17 people are leaving and 19 people will be taking their
place. Between the dates of April 10-17, 44 singers
auditioned to be in the musical groups. The following

2007 Spring Band Trip

The Giles High School Symphonic Band took their annual
spring trip on April 13th and spent 3 days touring the city of
Washington D.C. They left Friday the 13th at 6:00 A.M. and
arrived in D.C. at around 12 P.M. Their first stops were the
Smithsonian National History and Air and Space Museums. After
the museums, the band took a two and a half hour walking tour
that included The Washington Monument, a World War II

Later that evening, the band ate dinner at The Hard Rock Café.
The group stayed in the Embassy Suites Hotel in Vienna, Virginia and this is where they had
their performance on Saturday. They had a phenomenal performance and the judge gave them a
superior rating of 93 out of 100. Also on
Saturday, they enjoyed games and
amusement park rides at the Six Flags
theme park in Largo, Maryland. After the
excitement of the park, they prepared
themselves to go to The John F. Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts where
they would see a play. The production
was titled “Shear Madness” and most
everyone enjoyed its comedy and wit.

On Sunday, the last day of the trip, they
checked out of the hotel and made one last stop before coming home at The International Spy
Museum. This museum featured air ducts that people could crawl through and other spy related
activities. The band enjoyed their trip and came back home with a very proud feeling of

music for their last concert of the year to be held in the spring. After the success of this trip, the
band will be eagerly awaiting their trip next year with anticipation.
Directing the Band

Next year’s band will be featuring something that has not been common
in years past, two drum majors. Auditions were held for the new position
because the current drum major, Angela Morris, is a graduating senior this
year. Realizing that the growing band will need more direction, Mr. White decided to
choose two. Upcoming sophomore Carli Klecak and junior Melanie Midkiff were awarded
the positions. The Giles High School band has had two drum majors before but never
during Mr. Kevin White’s time as band director. They will be directing a band of about 70
people and the theme of next year’s show will be spiritual music. Some marching bands
have a drum major on each side of the field, but Mr. White has not made the decision yet of
how to position them for next year’s shows. He said that it would all depend on field
position and drill formations that he has not drawn up yet. It will definitely be a unique
experience for the band and those who enjoy the marching show.

No Strings Attached

This year’s spring musical, No Strings Attached, was full of energetic dance
routines, over the top musical numbers, and unforgettable characters. The play,
written by Rainville Dorn with music and lyrics by Bill Francouer, was loosely based
on the classic tale of the puppet boy Pinocchio. No Strings Attached put a modern
twist on the story, written by Carlo Collodi, by updating the language and
modernizing the music. In fact, the production had a variety of songs, ranging from
hip-hop and Latin to 50’s rock and bluegrass.
In the play, a rebellious teen named Carl wanders into Professor Pinecone’s
Magical Marionette Puppet Theatre. There, he becomes part of the show when he is
magically transformed into one of the
puppets. Carl becomes Pinocchio and
must live the story as the professor
tries to teach him a valuable lesson.

January. Although several rehearsals
were missed due to snow days, the show went on as scheduled. The production was
performed for the public on Friday, March 30th and Sunday April 1st. The following
Monday, Macy and Eastern K-3rd graders enjoyed the show. Then, on Wednesday
afternoon, the play was performed for GHS students.
Overall, the play was a big success. The cast received numerous compliments
on the production, and many GHS students said that it was the best musical the
drama department has ever performed. Audience members also stated that the
group gets better with every production. Although the cast was a little nervous
before opening night, they once again put on a great show.

Cosmetology: More Than a Haircut

There are many different job descriptions in the school of cosmetology.
Manicures, pedicures, hair cutting and styling, facials and skin treatments,
and even makeup are different aspects of cosmetology. Although licensing
and training are different for each job, you must be licensed by the state in
which you plan on working. Some states require high school graduation;
others may only require an eighth grade education. In all states one must be
at least 16 years old. To obtain a license you are required to take a written
test and demonstrate basic barbering and cosmetology services properly.
Some states also allow apprenticeships in hair salons under the guidance of a
licensed cosmetology teacher.
On a typical day, duties that a cosmetologist might perform depending on
specializations are:
¾ Cut, trim and shape hair or hair pieces
¾ Bleach, dye, or tint hair
¾ Attach wig or hairpiece to a mannequin and style
¾ Massage and treat scalp for hygienic and remedial purposes
¾ Administer therapeutic medication and advise client to seek medical
treatment for persistent or contagious scalp conditions
¾ Recommend and apply cosmetics, lotions, and creams to client to
soften and lubricate skin and enhance and restore natural
appearance
¾ Shape and color eyebrows or eyelashes and remove facial hair
¾ Clean, shape, and polish fingernails and toenails
¾ Update and maintain customer information records, such as beauty
services provided

There are three different methods for cosmetologists to earn their wages:
1) Commission – A percentage of the money made from a service is
paid to the cosmetologist. You are sometimes considered self-employed, but
the salon provides products, water, electricity, etc. You are responsible for
your own taxes.
2) Booth Rental – Personally “rent” a space in the salon for a monthly
fee. You only have to provide your own products, and are responsible for
your own taxes.
3) Hourly Wage – Ensures that employees are responsible for following company standards and policies.

asked a question on stage that they were previously asked during their private interview. The second
runner-up was Meredith Epperley, the first runner-up was Katie Cady, and the winner was Katy
Allamong. Congratulations girls!

Hoil Song: Not an Exchange Student Anymore

Many people wonder what it is like to be an exchange student and what the process is
like. Hoil Song experienced it first hand and described what it is like to leave his family
and live in a host home.
Why do you come every year?
“I come back every year to continue my education in America. Because I was born
in the United States, I have a U.S. citizenship. My parents wanted me to study in the U.S.
because I would have a better chance going to a good college and there are more job
opportunities here than in Korea.”
What do you like most about being an exchange student?
“Well, actually, I was an exchange student only the first year, which was 2003, and
then the thing I liked the most was getting all of the attention from everybody. I enjoyed
telling people about Korea, letting them know that Sough Korea is the Korea that doesn’t
bomb. After the first year, I came back to the Johnson’s family, which was the host family
for the exchange program. I am so blessed to be with this family and they have been so
great to me.”
How did you get involved/what is the process like?
“One random day my parents brought me to this place, and for some reason I had to take an English test. I took the test and later
a lady came by and said that I had passed. I had no idea what was going on. They then explained that it was a test for an exchange
student program. The test was not difficult, but somewhat challenging. After the test, I got an interview. Of course, it was in English.
After the test and interview parts were over, we talked about the location I would like to stay. I couldn’t pick a specific area, only a
big region. So after all the paper work was over, I just had to wait for a “lucky” family to choose me as their exchange student.
That’s how I became an exchange student.”

Lindsay Honosky- Struggling to Survive

While Lindsay Honosky’s upbeat personality and “easy to make friends” attitude could fool
someone into thinking her life has never seen any hardships, such an assumption would be
horribly wrong. Lindsay suffers from Junior Dermatomyositis, an autoimmune disease that
affects every facet of her life.
So, what exactly is Junior Dermatomyositis?
“It makes my white blood cells think my tissue is infected and attacks it. Because of this, I
basically have to kill my immune system so it doesn’t kill me. It’s sort of related to Lupus in a
way, and it’s mainly for the elderly, but… I got it. [The doctors] say it is hereditary, but it’s really
rare. It’s sort of like my puberty, but instead of getting pimples when I was 13, I got a crippling
disease!”
When did were you diagnosed with this disease?
“It was a sudden onset. I was 13, at the beach, and I just started feeling weaker and weaker. It
got to the point where I couldn’t even raise my arms high enough to wash my hair. When we
finally went to the hospital, my dad had to carry me in because I couldn’t walk. They told me that
if I hadn’t gotten there when I did, I would be in a wheel chair now. [The thought] is really

Does Junior Dermatomyositis still affect your body today?
“I’m very slow to heal. I was jumping hurdles in gym last year, and I tripped, got a bruise,
and I still have some of it. I also miss a lot of school days. Mostly, my problems come from the all of the medicines I have to take.
They made me go from 90 pounds to 180 pounds in, like, three weeks, and then I ended up with all these stretch marks after [the
medicines] caused my weight to plummet again.”
How do you keep it controlled?
“I have to take Prednisone, Neural, and Methotrexate [for my disease]. The Prednisone causes calcium to leak out of my bones,
forming these gross bumps in my skin, so I have to take Fosamax in order to counter that. I go to the doctor every other month, and
they take my blood to count my white blood cells. Depending on the count, I either have to take more or fewer pills.”
What effect did this disease have on your schooling and activities?
“I’m sick so often, it’s not even funny. I didn’t even go to school
for a whole semester at first. I had to be home schooled because I
was so weak I couldn’t do anything by myself. I used to be really
good at playing the trumpet in the band, but after I developed this
[disease], the muscles in my throat and mouth were so weak that I
got really tired after just playing one song. Now that I’m a little
better, I’m afraid to join the band because I’m afraid that marching
season would cause my disease to flare back up.”
How does your disease affect your life today?
“I must say I’ve lacked a boyfriend for two years, but I’m
blessed with so many friends. Also I can’t really go outside and do
stuff like other kids; I have to worry about getting tired in the sun. A
lot of times, I guess, I don’t try to do a lot, so then I don’t really
know what my limitations are, so then I won’t go crazy knowing that
I can’t run a lap like all my other friends can.”
Are you going to be able to live on your own, eventually?
“I try not to think about it. Right now, I have to have all kinds of
help. Someone has to help me open Coke bottles because my fingers
are too weak! They estimate that by the time I’m 21, it’ll either go
into remission or completely go away, but there is, like, a 75%
chance that it’ll come back [and infect me again].”

Choosing the Right College

Around this time of year it’s easy to identify the seniors in the hall by
the panicked looks on their faces. The pressure of making important life
decisions takes a heavy toll on not only seniors, but underclassmen as well.
The most common issue facing high school students is choosing the right
college to attend. Throughout their junior and senior years, students are
bombarded with e-mails and brochures from universities across the country,
and in some cases, around the world. The stress of picking just one of these
thousands of possibilities is a lot to handle. Fortunately, after consulting
various college websites and brochures and asking the opinions of students, I
have compiled a list of important factors that everyone should consider
before choosing a college.
1) Location, Location, Location… The location of the college you choose is one of the most important things to consider.
How far away is it from home? Do you want to attend college in a rural or urban setting? Is the location a safe environment, or is there
a high crime rate in the community? Also, make sure that your decision is near student resources, such as libraries, museums, etc. It’s
important for you to pick a location with a diverse culture. College should be both an educational and cultural experience.
2) Tuition Is How Much!?! The cost of the college you choose is another key factor. Before applying, talk to your family
about how much they will be able to pay. In addition, ask your guidance counselor and check the internet for grants, scholarships, and
loans. Don’t forget to figure in room and board, books, living costs, transportation, and other fees.
3) 40,000 Is A Crowd… Class size and student population may also affect your college decision. Some universities are small,
with around one to two thousand students. Others, however, have tens of thousands of students attending at once. An important thing
to remember is that the larger the college, the larger the classes. If you want more professor involvement and instruction, a smaller
college is probably a better choice.
4) Medical Anthropology vs. Global Communications… Curriculum should be one of the first things you look at when
researching a college. You should make your decision based on whether classes that will help you advance in your career choice are
available. A lot of students unwisely enroll at a university with no idea what they want to major in and become stuck when they
realize courses that will benefit them aren’t available.
5) World Renowned… A college’s reputation may also alter your impression. Well known universities tend to have more
applicants, but that doesn’t mean that they are better schools. You should avoid making your decision on reputation alone, and look at
more important things, such as accreditation, awards, and success stories after graduation.
6) I Can’t Handle The Pressure!!! Our parents and friends often try to influence our choices in life. While both can offer
great advice, peer and parental pressure can cause a lot of stress and second guessing. Don’t decide to enroll at a school just because
that’s where your friends are going or it’s where your parents attended. You should make your decision based on whether the school is
right for you and will help you reach your career goals.
7) Exploring the Possibilities… The most important thing to remember is to explore all of your options. Check college sites,
request pamphlets, and apply to the most appealing choices. Also, be realistic but don’t settle. It’s okay to apply to a few “safe”
colleges, but don’t be afraid to send an application to the university of your dreams.
What’s With the
Alarm?

maintenance personnel are always
“fixing” the fire alarms in school?
Some might think they just do it to
have something to do, or maybe just to
get on our nerves. Whatever the
reason, it really does get tiring
listening to the fire alarm go off what
seems every other week, because they are “working on them.” Our
principal, Mr. Brown, says the reason they are working on them so often is because it is state a requirement to make sure that the
system is always functioning properly. While working on them, they are performing electrical, water flow, duct detector, pull station,
and communication checks. There has actually been a request from the faculty to perform this work before or after school to avoid
disrupting the classes. The maintenance department and the Director of Operations were both notified to discuss this option.

sports to begin. Along with the other sports, the Boy’s Tennis
team has been formed and their season has begun. Their Coach,
Byron Hurley, made this statement about the team, “We have a
very young team this year, with not a single senior. The boys
are improving on a daily basis. I believe they will only get
better as they continue

8th Grade Boys and Girls Track

The Boys Track team progressed early this season. At the start, they had fifteen newcomers trying
to become better athletes and wanting to compete against other teams. They continued to keep that in
mind during several weeks of practice and could see improvement in themselves.
At their first meet, they had a tough loss against Blacksburg, but they worked hard and the next
week tied Eastern Montgomery (44-44). A week later they competed against Dublin and Eastern
Montgomery. They tried their hardest to overcome their competitors, but fell a little short. They had
first place finishes from Frankie Robertson in the triple jump and Eric Gadd in the discus. Also scoring
in the meet were Josh Yost, David Holman, and Blake Martin. Along with them was the rest of the
team, giving their all and achieving their personal best scores and distances.
At the district meet the team proved their competitiveness by scoring in field and running events
to end their season well. Great job, boys!
The eighth grade Girls Track team started off aggressive this season. With twelve girls coming
out, they showed great determination to improve and the will to win. After several weeks of practice,
they came to their first meet with competitiveness. They dominated it with a score of 77 to 44 against
Blacksburg. Their second meet against Eastern Montgomery was won 93 to 17. The following week
they competed against Dublin and Eastern Montgomery; they overcame Eastern Montgomery yet
again, but they fell to Dublin by only five points.
Halfway through the season, they improved on techniques in various areas and learned how to
work as a team. At the district meet, they competed intensely by not only winning the title of Three
River District champs, but as well as setting new meet records. The girls also obtained their personal
best times, heights, and distances in all of their events. Good job girls!

The Varsity Track Season got off to a strong start this
year. The first track meet was held at Giles on March 21
against Blacksburg. Sasha King got first place in the 100 and
200 meter races and took first place in the 4x100 meter race
with the help of Danielle Martin, Paige Kauffelt, and Michele
Martin. Also on the girls’ team, Melanie Taylor recorded a
win with a gold in discus. Also scoring for Giles were
Rachael Lang and Autumn Widrig. The boys’ team got
victories from Mario Jones and Conan Cook. Also awarded
Paige Kauffelt takes her turn in
high jump.

On Wednesday, April 4th, Giles hosted a track meet and both the boys’ and the
girls’ teams defeated Radford, Eastern Montgomery, and Craig County. The boys’
team got several victories from Caleb Clark, who got first place in the 100 and 200
meter races, and Mario Jones, who won the high jump and triple jump. Other
Spartans who took first place include Steven Sessor, Matthew Gilmer, Conan Cook,
and Chris Collins. Gilmer and Clark also ran to victory with the help of Travis
Robertson and Ryan Eaton for a win in the 4x100 meter relay race. The girls’ team
was led by Sasha King, who won four individual events. King also teamed with
Venessa Burnette, Michele Martin, and Danielle Martin to win the 4x100 meter relay
race. Many others contributed to this win.
Senior discus throwers, Conan Cook and Melanie Taylor, have had an
outstanding season. Cook achieved the school record of 150’10” in 2006 and this
season he surpassed this record with a throw of 152’9”. He has also been All-State
for the past two years. Taylor is the defending State Champion and has been AllState three years straight. Her best throw this season is 112’9”.
Our congratulations go to the varsity track team on a great season. Get ready for
next year and keep up the good work!

The Giles Varsity Softball team started with a scrimmage at
home on March 8th, 2007 against Pulaski. On March 13th, Giles
played at Craig County. Giles got a good start in the first inning
but the Rockets took the win. Giles had a great evening against
Galax winning 18-0 with great plays by Lindsay Meredith and Lynnette Spicer. Giles
took on Craig County once more for a non-district game. Giles also took on Fort
Chiswell, Narrows, Auburn, Christiansburg, East Mont., Floyd, and Radford this season.

Being on the JV softball team is a wonderful way to
begin a softball career. Dusty Stump, with assistant
coaches Mark Wilburn and Dale Meredith, coach the
team. The team captains are Sarah Morris, Whitney
Meredith, and Heather Kirk. As of May 2, 2007, the
team has won three games out of their total 14 games.
The coach wishes to say that, “at this point in the season,
the JV Softball has worked hard and put forth the effort
needed to win games. Every girl has improved since the
beginning of the season and hopefully will continue to
improve until the end.” Good job, ladies!

The Junior Varsity soccer team had a rough start this
season. When they lost their main goalie, Clay Bowles,
to a broken ankle, JV had to rearrange people into
different positions. However, they continued to work
hard and came together as a team, resulting in a 2-7
record this season. Full of talent, JV will be losing
several players to varsity next year, but will still be a
strong team.

The Junior Varsity baseball team has had a wonderful season.
With wins over some very difficult teams, the Spartans have
dominated the 2007 season with a 16-4-1 record. With six eighth
graders, ten ninth graders, and two tenth graders, this year’s team
was full of talented players. Being the Three Rivers District
champions for three years in a row has been a major accomplishment
for the junior varsity. The JV team will be losing a few players to
Varsity next year, but will still be an impressive team.

The Varsity Baseball team had an incredibly strong season this year, with only 2 seniors
leaving the field. Their first game against Galax was a knockout with a score of 13-1. Jared Brown
crashed a 2 run homer in the 2nd inning to give Giles all the runs it would need. Zach Atkins, the
pitcher, allowed only 5 hits and struck out 10 over the 6 innings.
Although the Spartans fell short against Christiansburg,

In their second game against Craig County, Josh Rader
had 6 strong innings by striking out 9 batters and giving up
only 5 hits. Sheldon Douthat and Michael Atkins had 2 hits apiece and drove in 5 runs between
them. Zach Atkins had a 2 run hit and Ben Mullins had an RBI single, while Wes Conley struck
out the side in the last inning, with a finishing score of 9-2.
When the time for the game against rival Narrows, the Spartans were pumped, and showed that
in the score of 10-0. Zach Atkins allowed only 3 hits over 5 innings and struck out 8 batters along
the way. He also had a 2 run homer in the 1st inning. Josh Rader had a single and a lone home run
which was ruled a double by mistake. Aaron McCroskey, Wes Conley, and Joey Stevers each had
doubles for the team.
The team continued to play as well as the previous games, and even better in some cases. It is
obvious that every player worked hard and continuously improved their talent throughout the
season.

This year’s Boys Varsity Soccer
Team started out extremely strong.
With an undefeated record, the
Spartans were proving they were
going to go far. With a little luck last
year, the boy’s team did pretty well,
but this year’s team is the team to
watch. There have been more fans at
every Giles game than ever before.
New comers Thomas George,
Varney Vincent, Richard Vincent
and Josue Cook, have helped the
Varney Vincent’s agility pays off as he
team tremendously. Richard and
passes the ball to his teammates.
Varney Vincent were chosen to play
in the VHSL Soccer All-Star Games.
Losing to Radford the team decided to take it up a notch. Head Coach Randy Roe has
high expectations for his team this year. Each day they work a little harder to reach
their goal of going to state. Could Giles High School have the first state title for soccer
ever?

The Girls Varsity soccer team had a rough start this
season. They ended up in a tie when they played at
Christiansburg, 1-1 in double over time. (With Karelyn
Ribbe scoring the Lady Spartans first goal of the season,
the soccer team was very excited.) Once they played
Christiansburg at home they were all tied up 2-2, and
went into overtime where they sadly lost 4-2.
On May 1st, George Wythe came to Giles for a very
intense game. The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the
game with Astleigh Hobbs scoring the goal. The Lady
