Forestry S O U R C E S F O R F O R E S T R Y S U P P L I E S A N D M AT E R I A L S Forestry Tools You can purchase forestry tools such as increment borers, logger tapes, clinometers, planting shovels, pruning saws, and much more from forestry supply retailers. Your local saw shop may also carry some of these items. • Bailey’s—1-800-322-4539 http://www.baileysonline.com/ • Ben Meadows—1-800-241-6401 http://www.benmeadows.com/ • Forestry Suppliers—1-800-647-5368 http://www.forestry-suppliers.com/ • Pac-Forest Supply—1-877-736-5995 http://www.pacforestsupply.com/ • PullerBear—1-877-943-3607 http://www.pullerbear.com/ • The Uprooter—1-888-801-0201 http://www.theuprooter.com/ Wildlife Damage Protection Plastic tubing and a variety of repellents are available from forestry supply retailers. Make sure that repellants are registered by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) for use in Washington. One wildlife repellent, Seadust, is only available directly from the manufacturer: http://www.seadust.biz or 1-866-352-6055. Wildlife Forage Seed Mixes Mixes of legumes and grasses are available that will increase wildlife forage on disturbed sites such as logging roads (see http://forestry.wsu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/ Forage_Mixes.pdf for some seed mix recipes). It can be difficult to find seed mixes sold in small quantities (i.e. not sold by the ton). Here are some possible sources. • Rainier Seeds in Davenport, WA—This company has developed small batches of forage seed mixes specifically for small landowners: 509-725-1235 or http://www.rainierseeds.com/ There are several tools available to provide the necessary leverage to manually remove woody-stemmed weeds like Scotch broom. A common tool available in the past was the Weed Wrench, but these are no longer produced. Three similar alternatives are currently available: • Skagit Farm Supply, with multiple locations in Skagit, Island, and Snohomish counties. They carry an erosion mix that will mitigate erosion and attract wildlife, and they also have a pasture mix. 360-757-6053 (main office in Burlington) or http:// www.skagitfarmers.com • The Extractigator—1-855-743-0353 http://www.extractigator.com/ • Other local feed or farm supply stores. Weed Removers Native Plants and Trees The Washington Department of Natural Resource’s Webster Nursery south of Tumwater has seedlings of the most commonly planted tree species available in bundles of 100. They begin taking orders on the first business day of September, and they often sell out. For more information call 1-877-890-2626 or visit http://www.dnr.wa.gov/BusinessPermits/Topics/ WebsterForestNursery/. Weyerhaeuser sells seedlings to the public. For more information call 1-800-732-4769 or visit http://www.weyerhaeuser.com/Businesses/WesternSeedlingSales. Forest Seedling Network is a website where you can search for available seedlings for sale: http://www.forestseedlingnetwork.com/. The Washington Association of Conservation Districts (WACD) Plant Materials Center in Bow, WA has a wide variety of native trees and plants (bare root and live stake), usually in bundles of 25 or 50. They take orders year-round for distribution in winter and early spring. For more information call 360-757-1094 or visit http://www.wacdpmc.org/. A good source for a variety of native trees and plants are the conservation district plant sales that are held each year, usually around the beginning of March. You may need to pre-order to guarantee availability of what you want, and the deadline can be as early as December. Bare root stock, live stakes, and seedlings are available through these sales, generally offering a low-cost alternative to nurseries. Here are some of the plant sales that occur annually in the North Puget Sound area. Contact the plant sale in your county to get specific dates, request a sale brochure, and get added to their announcement list. • King Conservation District—425-282-1898 http://www.kingcd.org/ Native Plant Nurseries Here are two directories of the numerous nurseries in the area that carry native trees and plants: King Conservation District Native Plant Nursery List http://www.kingcd.org/pdf/publication_native_ nurseries.pdf Plant Native: Native Plant Nursery Directory http://www.plantnative.org/nd_wa.htm Some species can be hard to find (e.g. Pacific yew). Here are several nurseries that have been known to carry harder to find native trees and plants. • Fourth Corner Nurseries, Bellingham, WA 360-592-2250 http://www.fourthcornernurseries.com • MsK Rare Plant Nursery, Shoreline, WA 206-546-1281 http://msknursery.com/ • Woodbrook Nursery, Gig Harbor, WA 253-857-6808 http://woodbrooknativeplantnursery.com/ • Skagit Conservation District—360-428-4313 http://www.skagitcd.org/ • Snohomish Conservation District—425-335-5634 ext. 4 http://snohomishcd.org/ • Vashon Land Trust—206-463-2644 http://isladev.com/vmilt/ • Whatcom Conservation District—360-354-2035 http://www.whatcomcd.org/ • Whidbey Island Conservation District—360-678-4708 http://www.whidbeycd.org/ WSU Extension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination.
