Principal’s Message
Tena Koutou Katoa.
Friday 1 April 2016
Message from Michael Prince
NCEA RESULTS 2015
To the wonderful community that
Kavanagh College is.
March was our reporting time to the Ministry of
Education on our 2015 academic performance so I thought I'd share a
few bullet points on our key successes. We probably need to trumpet
ourselves a bit more than we do. Our Catholic humility can sometimes
play a part but according to the Gospel neither should we hide our light
under the bushel!
I wish to thank everyone who made
my departure from Kavanagh College
a very memorable one. I was very
overwhelmed at the school assembly
by:

We are still producing results significantly ahead of the National
Average and also above the Decile 8 - 10 average at all three
levels of NCEA.
Best performance in the last 5 Years for NCEA Level 1 (94.3%
pass rate) and Level 3 (89.2 %) .
99.2% Literacy and 99.2% Numeracy achieved at Level 1 – the
best results in the last five years and we continue to track above
the National Average for Decile 8 schools.
Continued to produce pleasing Excellence & Merit Endorsement
Results at all levels. e.g. At Level 2 those achieving an Excellence
endorsement is now better than 1 in 5 students (20%+)
Our University Entrance pass rate was up from 71.3% in 2014
to 78.5% last year. (National Average is 61.3%)
Five subject scholarships were obtained by Year 13 students in
the end of Year school examinations.
Note that a new Academic Achievement Record system for earlier
notification to Tutor Teachers and Deans when students are not
achieving at expected levels was introduced in 2015. This resulted in
more timely interventions and where necessary communication
home. There was a lift in both Literacy and Numeracy achievement at
Level 1. This has been a focus area in the school for the past four years
beginning at Year 7 and through to Year 10. There is some terrific work
being done in the junior cohorts to give us a solid launching point for
NCEA. Overall our results are up there or surpass the best schools in
Dunedin for both Co-Ed and single sex schools. Great work Kavanagh
College. Let's make sure we walk tall and get the message out there
about the great things our students and College is achieving.
Congratulations to Fr Gerard Aynsley, the organising committee and
South Dunedin parishioners on achieving such a great result with the
refurbishment of St Patrick's Basilica. It was lovely to attend Easter
services there and see the great transformation that has taken place.
Today the Caritas challenge kicks off over the weekend with a number
of 24 hour-athons in action as our students take up the challenge.
Thanks to all students, staff and parents that are supporting this
kaupapa. It is a highly worthy cause that supports Caritas who is
focusing on Cambodia. More importantly it gets our students to
demonstrate solidarity with those living today in poverty or injustice.
Tracy O'Brien
8TSU and 9STE are collecting items for the Syrian refugee
children who are coming to live in Dunedin.
If you can help with the collection of good used toys, easy reading books, spare exercise books, pens, crayons etc please drop
them to the office. Thank you.
Mr MacLeod's complimentary
farewell speech and pictures which mentioned events even I
had forgotten about.
- the resounding haka led impressively by Riley Mortimer
but performed by more students and staff than I have ever
seen.
- and by everyone's patience, applause and best wishes.
I would also like to thank Tracy O'Brien for his wholehearted
support of me during his time as Principal.
I will miss the staff and students of Kavanagh College
considerably. It has been a major part of my life and my
three older children and I have had a great time there. I
didn't choose to leave Kavanagh rather I chose to move
closer to family.
I wish you well and may God's blessings be on us all.

Meet Our Head Students—
Deputy Head Girl Jess Blyth
THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ
I was born in Napier in 1998 and then
11-13 MAY
spent 10 years living in Auckland before
moving to Waitati School for my last year
of primary education.
I then went to
Balmacewen Intermediate for two years
before starting at Kavanagh in Year 9. I have a brother
(Elliot) in Year 11.
When I first started at Kavanagh I was always looking for
boundaries to push or rules to question, but as I’ve grown,
guided by staff and students, I’ve used my curiosity to
pursue the sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well
as Statistics, Classics and Religious Education.
At school I have been involved with student council,
buddies/peer mentoring, musicals, curling and astronomy.
Outside of school I enjoy listening to music, dance, photography and travel.
As a leader at Kavanagh I hope to

Encourage environmental awareness

Always be approachable and see conflict from both
sides

Have the serenity to know what I cannot change, the
courage to change what I can and the wisdom to know
the difference.

Kavanagh/KVC v St. Edmunds College
Kavanagh College
Forsyth Barr Stadium 21st March 2016
vs
On this amazing stage, the boys had a nervous first few
minutes before settling comfortably into their groove. With
fast hands and good vision, the boys passed the ball out wide
which enabled Luka Casey to cross the try line to notch up the
first points of the game all within five minutes of the starting
whistle. We continued to dominate in open play throughout
the first 35 minutes whilst working hard at scrum time against
a much larger pack. Quick thinking and acting at the breakdown gave rise to tries from Shade Rowe and Connell Webb,
with Caleb Kelekolio converting a further try by Jake
Bardwell. Half time 22 – 0.
ST Kevins Cricket Exchange
Increasing in confidence the team began to introduce new set
plays into the mix, resulting in Michael Cordtz crossing the
line for his first of two second half tries. Not going down without a fight, St Edmunds College fought hard putting our
defence under sustained pressure. Their persistence eventually
paid off with a converted try. The boys dug deep and continued to build on their 1st half tally, with further tries from Will
Campbell, Shea Webb and Logan Tisdall.
A final score of 52 – 7 has set the foundations on which to
build for the coming 2016 season.
Man of the match as selected by St Edmunds College went to
Connell Webb.
On Wednesday 23 March, the First XI Cricket team travelled to
Oamaru to take on old foe St Kevin’s in the annual First XI cricket
match.
St Kevin’s won the toss and chose to bat first. Kavanagh College
had St Kevin’s in early trouble at 4 for 4 with Nick Parata and Josh
Lucas doing the early damage but a middle order partnership helped
steady the ship for St Kevin’s and they eventually made their way
through to 106 all out. Nick Parata (4 wickets), Josh Lucas (2
wickets) and Will Campbell (2 wickets) did the damage with the ball.
In reply Kavanagh got off to a steady start with Anthony Mirfin
continuing on his good form working the ones well and defending
well, Sam Smith was aggressive for his 21 and Josh Lucas showed
good maturity finishing 24 not out to anchor the innings for
Kavanagh. A little mid order collapse got a few nerves jangling but
Kavanagh got home 7 wickets down. A good end to the season for
the boys and we look forward to next season knowing we have
introduced a few new players into the squad.
Congratulations to Isabella
Wadsworth for placing 6th at
the BMXNZ Nationals in
Auckland.
A big thank you to everyone who came out to support the
boys.
