Greetings. Tena Koutou Katoa The PFA has given $1000 to the College for the purchase of senior subject study guides for NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3. These It's been an action packed week of sport and study guides will be kept on close reserve in the library to be culture for Kavanagh College. available for all Year 11 - 13 students. This will allow students Congratulations to our junior sports teams on winning the access to these study guides without having to go to the Catholic Quadrangular Sports tournament held here in expense of purchasing one themselves. Dunedin on Wednesday. It is the third time in four years that we have won this competition but the first time we have won outright. More importantly it's a great occasion and all of our southern region Catholic schools should be proud of the way they played and sportsmanship and goodwill shown. Thanks to our Sports guns for their great organisation etc. Last night two Kavanagh choirs competed in the Regional "Big Sing" competition. Both the A Cappella and Kavanagh Pasifika Singers sang with pride and distinction. It was particularly joyful to see a Pasifika Choir from Kavanagh for the first time. Well done to all and especially to Mr Kelly and Ms Watts who put in hours of work for this competition. In a recent newsletter I put out some NCEA data that showed how well Kavanagh College was performing against single sex schools in Dunedin. I must have had the 6th sense working as a new report out this week shows that on average single sex schools perform better in NCEA than Co-ed schools. The debate lives on and always will. At the end of the day it's a horses for courses argument. Both systems have much to recommend them. The beauty of NZ education system is it's diversity-long may that continue-Amen! C “OC” - Opportunity Class Report Last Wednesday the OC class (and others) had the privilege of having Ms Vanda Symon speak on the process of writing and publishing a novel. Vanda has written a series of NZ crime novels, plus one stand alone piece, set in Dunedin. Her novel "Containment" was a finalist for the Best Crime Novel in 2010 and "Bound" debuted on the Number 1 Best Seller List for 2011. She is also Chair of the Otago Southland Branch of the NZ Society of Authors. Her huge love of reading started Vanda writing and she spoke to us about how to build believable and likeable (or not!) characters such as the strong crime fighter 'Sam Shephard'. Vanda draws on character traits from books she has read in the past and even from family. Characters that evoke emotion makes readers want to get to know them as people and they look forward to the next story in the saga. "Writing is supposed to be a pleasure" she said, be kind to yourselves and look for ways to get objective feedback on what you write. We would like to sincerely thank Vanda for giving up her time so generously. Her enthusiasm for her writing shone through and was an encouragement for all. ongratulations to Hamish Prince and his saxophone quartet "Suite Saxes" for their achievement at the Chamber Music Festival at the weekend. His quartet received the NZ Music Awards (in association with SOUNZ and CANZ) Award for the Best Performance of a New Zealand Work. This award is presented with the assistance of the estate of the Auckland composer Keith Statham. They also received a Highly Commended award "which is basically second". A fantastic result. Suite Saxes were up against 45 other ensembles from schools in Dunedin. Koodos groups at Kavanagh College The Power Puffs are the first koodos group at Kavanagh. This CHALK EFFECT is a collection of their places to chill! Koodos is a very cool programme focusing on providing Life Skills for Teenagers. Being a teenager can sometimes be confusing and this program enables creative ways to learn skills to gain Emotional Power! Be a social guru, have great career plans and be able to survive when you leave school. Visit us on Facebook. "Dare to Succeed" Pacifika Homework Centre Monday 3.00-5.00pm in our school library CALLING ALL ADVERTISERS FOR THE YEARBOOK/MAGAZINE 2014 Every year at Kavanagh College we produce a yearbook/magazine, recording the history and achievements of our school year. Last year’s magazine ran to 148 pages. This year is of particular importance because we are celebrating 25 years. Students who attend our College come from the whole of the greater Dunedin area, from Port Chalmers to Mosgiel, so the magazine reaches a very wide circulation area. We exchange with other schools and copies are lodged with the Dunedin Public Library, the Hocken Library and the Government archives in Wellington. It is also on line via the school website. Such a publication is a major financial undertaking and to assist once again with this we offer interested organizations the opportunity to advertise. Please contact Mrs Ireland-Kenny through the School Office for details. Copy closes on Monday, 1 September. Southern Catholic Secondary Schools Junior Winter Tournament What a fantastic day we had on Wednesday 18th June when we hosted the Junior Catholic Schools tournament at Bayfield Park and the Edgar Centre, the weather was great and the competition was fierce at both venues. Four sports were competed for over the day with rugby, football, netball and basketball all taking centre stage. Out at Bayfield our football teams all competed very well winning most of their games. The rugby teams also competed very well with coach Shawn Haig’s Year 7/8 team winning all their games. We were treated to some great running rugby and some excellent skills which should all bode well for the future of Kavanagh College rugby. Back at the Edgar Centre the netball was in full swing with our Year 7 girls doing particularly well winning all three of their games, as did our Year 8 girls. Congratulations to everyone involved in those teams for a fantastic effort throughout the day. The Year 9 and 10 teams did not fear quite so well but I’m sure learnt a lot from the day. In the basketball our best performing team was the Year 9/10 girls team winning two out of three games. All the other teams competed very well in some tight games. Overall Kavanagh College won the trophy with the most wins on the day. Kavanagh 20 wins, Verdon and St Kevin’s 17 and St Peter’s 16. All in all a very tight competition right throughout the day, but good to see the right school came out on top! NETBALL RESULTS Senior A v Charlies Angels B I would like to thank all the staff that helped out on the day with various codes, the referees who officiated in matches, the catering staff from our canteen for the food—it was delicious and lastly to the students who made the day a very successful one on and off the court/field. This was the first time it was held at KVC in very wet and boggy conditions. We had three runners in the U14 Boys race and one in each of the U14 Girls race and U16 Girls race. Below are all the results: Under 14 girls 3Km Brigid Corson 18:48 : placed 24th Under 14 Boys -3km Nathaniel Peacock : 14:11 placed 12th Will Christophers : 15:13 Placed 23rd Sean Stewart : DNF Under 16 girls Jessie Murphy 14:32 Placed 2nd Congratulations to all passion. Jessie on her way to 2nd place in the U16 Girls race Congratulations to the following Kavanagh boys who have been selected for Otago Futsal teams to take part in July’s Youth Championships in Wellington Under 16 Conrad Sinclair Jebin Jaimon Niko Cockerell Tim O'Farrell Kavanagh College U15s vs Logan Park 1st XV Kettle Park Final score: Kavanagh 67 - Logan Park 5 After a loss the previous week, the U15s were fizzing all week at training to make up for the poor performance against OBHS. Playing on Kettle Park No. 1 is a big deal and the team knew that they had to win and win well. From the first whistle, it was very clear that Kavanagh was going to dominate the match. In front of our loyal supporters, the team scored some outstanding tries. David Makasini was in electric form and Glen Cathro had a big game. The Tongan torpedo aka Sione Pule was in top form and Callum MacArthur tackled his heart out. A huge thank you to Mrs Deb Webb for donating two test match tickets to the MVP. David and his father certainly enjoyed watching the All Blacks win at Forsyth Barr stadium. Kavanagh College U14s vs Kings Panthers U14s Kettle Park Final score: Kavanagh 7 - Kings 27 This game was our best team performance yet. Having been beaten by 50+ points in our previous game the boys wanted to make amends and they played with true spirit and determination. Down 22-0 at the break the team came out with much more purpose and won the second half 7-5. Some real signs of progress are starting to emerge and the boys now understand what is required to compete and win games in this tough U14 competition. Congratulations to Soni and Kaleb for their player of the match performances. Well done to all the lads keep up the good work. competitors for representing Kavanagh College with pride and Saturday, 14 June Kavanagh College 1st XV—Bye Under 19 Ben O'Farrell Ben O'Farrell was also selected in the NZ Football U17 training squad last week.
