From dark comedies to gritty dramas, the selection will highlight the creative breadth and intense self-reflection of contemporary Greek cinema. Greece has a rich tapestry of storytelling dating back to the father of them all – Homer, whose grand poems of love and war are still enjoyed today. The Delphi Bank Greek Film Festival is a poignant reminder of the power of storytelling through pictures, providing an opportunity for the Greek diaspora and Philhellenes alike to take a journey with the new voices of Greek cinema. Introductions to each film will be given by director Sotiris Dounoukos, whose short film A Single Body won the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival’s inaugural Short Cuts International Award. A Single Body screens together with Alexandros Avranas’ Miss Violence. We will also be joined by Nick Lathouris to introduce Mad Max, who co-wrote the fourth installment of this global phenomenon. Nick will close the festival with some conversation and the 1979 cult classic, Mad Max, in the A. Baker Courtyard Cinema. A thank you goes again to the Hellenic Club of Canberra for the contribution and support of the this truly fantastic Festival, as well as warm thank you to Mrs. Eva Dafaranos and the Greek Embassy for their assistance and passion in curating the Canberra event. Johnathan Efkarpidis Director · Molonglo Group and Hotel Hotel 21st Greek Film Festival We look forward to seeing you at the Delphi Bank Greek Film Festival to indulge in contemporary Greek film – remembering that, as Socrates said long ago, “the unexamined life is not worth living”. 3 H a p • Proudly presenting the 21st Delphi Bank Greek Film Festival. Pantelis Voulgaris Dir Winner of Best Film and Best Cinematography at the Hellenic Film Academy Awards, and Greece’s entry for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars. “St Ge wh The latest addition to the vast oeuvre of veteran filmmaker Pantelis Voulgaris, Little England brings to life the eponymous novel of romance, betrayal, intrigue, passion and loss as penned by his wife, Ioanna Karystiani. It is the Greek island of Andros during World War II, where the lives of its women are dominated by long periods of isolation brought on by the seafaring nature of the island’s economy. Two sisters – the quiet and reticent Orsa (Pinelopi Tsilika) and the extroverted Moshca (Sofia Kokkali) – become entangled in a love triangle that develops with life-shattering consequences. A truly lavish period drama, sumptuously photographed by Simos Sarketzis and scored by Katerina Polemi, Little England captures the stark beauty of Andros, weaving breathtaking imagery into a multi-layered and complex storyline. Baker Courtyard Cinema, with introductions and commentary by Actor/Screenwriter Nick Lathouris. In a dystopic future Australia, law and order has begun to break down following a major energy crisis. With most of the Outback reduced to small communities, motorcycle gangs scavenge the lands and terrorise the population. The Main Force Patrol, an out-run police force, has been created to patrol the lands to uphold the remains of law and justice. 7 FEATURE FILMS MISS VIOLENCE Dir. Alexandros Avranas “A sub-Hanekean portrait of a bourgeois family whose apparent civility masks a festering sore of unspeakable patriarchal foulness.” The Guardian. 21st Greek Film Festival 8 With arguably even darker intent than Dogtooth (GFF 09), Alexandros Avranas’ Miss Violence is a gruesomely disturbing tale of domestic and sexual abuse that swept this year’s Hellenic Film Academy Awards. On her 11th birthday, Angeliki (Chloe Bolota) launches herself off the balcony of the family’s apartment to her death below while wearing a smile on her face. As the authorities and child protection agencies investigate the reasons behind such a tragic ending of young life, the nightmarish reality of both Angeliki and her siblings’ lives are exposed in stark, horrific fashion. GREEK/ALBANIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES Greece/Belgium/France · 2014 · 128mins Cast: Kostas Nikouli, Nikos Gelia 21st Greek Film Festival After the death of their Albanian mother, two brothers – the flamboyantly gay, 16 year-old Danny (Kostas Nikouli) and golden-voiced, 18 year-old Odysseas (Nikos Gelia) – leave Athens on a journey to Thessaloniki. Their mission: to locate their biological father in an attempt to avoid deportation to Albania. Marginalised in everyday Greek society, Danny also sees the upcoming Thessaloniki heats of the cult television talent show Greek Star as their ticket to acceptance and a way out of the uncompromising realities of modern Grecian life. Premiering to considerable acclaim in this year’s Un Certain Regard at Cannes, Xenia delves deeply into patriarchy, homosexuality and immigrant rights, meaning this film speaks as clearly to Australian audiences as it does to Greeks. “This comedy of brotherly love and outsider acceptance… boasts a spirited, audience-pleasing core.” Variety 9 Are you looking for a child care facility that provides: Spaces Available Ages: 2-6 years Hours: 7am to 6pm 3 Natural and engaging environment that supports children to be confident and active learners. 3 New centre with the latest educational resources available. 3 Greek language and cultural curriculum. 1 Hill Corner, Yarralumla 6285 2669 www.stnicholaspreschool.com.au Dir. Syllas Tzoumerkas “Freewheeling and full-on… a shrill expression of anger, driven forcefully and with a certain fearlessness.” Screen Daily In a striking and courageous lead performance, Angeliki Papoulia plays Maria – a woman who started her adult life with the best of intentions but, ten years later, feels her world falling out from under her. Unwilling to reconcile with a reality of unreturned care, lost dignity and a brokendown desire to live, Maria attacks. She attacks herself, her past, the people she loves, her country and the perception of her sex in a relentless battle to find truth. Only a day before, she was a caring mother, a loving wife and a responsible daughter. Today, she has gone rogue… “[Maria] moves to a place where good and bad, the morals of it all, are not what they used to be. And that, for me, makes her a hero worth watching and investigating.” Syllas Tzoumerkas Festivals & Awards: Locarno International Film Festival 2014 Η Μαρία, που άρχισε την ενήλικη ζωή της με τις καλύτερες προθέσεις, ανακαλύπτει, δέκα χρόνια αργότερα, πως ο κόσμος της φεύγει κάτω από τα πόδια της.
