chapter 1
Problems for the Autobots
Prologue
Many years ago, the planet Cybertron was the home of the
Autobots and the Decepticons. These were giant robots that
could transform into machines. The Autobots were good robots
but the Decepticons were bad. They wanted to be the leaders
on the planet. There was a long fight. Many robots died and
finally, the planet Cybertron was dead too. The Decepticons
came to Earth. They were looking for the Allspark. This had a
special power. It could make new robot life. The Autobots could
not let Megatron, the leader of the Decepticons, find and use
the Allspark. So, they followed him to Earth*. During a terrible
fight between the robots, a young American boy, Sam Witwicky,
used the Allspark to kill Megatron. When Megatron died, the
Allspark died too.
Now, the body of Megatron lies in very deep water and US
military ships stay near it. The last small piece of the Allspark
is in a very strong box. It is safe under the ground. But the
Decepticons have not left our planet. They are hiding in
machines all over the world. The Autobots have joined the US
Military to look for and kill the Decepticons.
Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots and Megatron’s
brother, knows that the Decepticons have got a plan. They want
something from this planet. Robots from Cybertron are not
new visitors to planet Earth*. Men and robots have met before,
millions of years ago …
Hundreds of people were running through the streets
of Shanghai in China. They were holding their hands over
their mouths and noses, and they were frightened.
‘Clear the area! There has been an accident. The air
might be dangerous. Leave quickly!’ shouted a soldier.
Motorbikes, cars and military trucks filled the roads.
There was a big problem. But it wasn’t an accident. The
soldiers didn’t want the people to know why they were
really there.
Carefully, the soldiers went closer to a big building.
Everything looked fine. There were pieces of machines all
over the ground. Then suddenly, the pieces of machines
started to move. They changed quickly. The bits of metal
came together with loud, screaming noises and quickly
they transformed. They changed into a giant robot. It had

a big angry head with black teeth, and heavy arms. It was
Demolisher, a Decepticon. A deep voice came from his
mouth as he crashed through the soldiers and threw cars
into the air. The soldiers fired their guns as the Decepticon
moved along the empty streets, but nothing could stop
him.
‘Quick. It’s escaping! We need planes!’ shouted Major
Lennox, the military leader.
Motorbikes and cars transformed into Autobots and
they attacked Demolisher but he was too big and too
strong. They couldn’t slow him down. Soon he was in the
busy streets of the city centre. His metal arms hit planes
out of the dark sky. People screamed, buildings burned
and the air was full of fire.
A military plane flew through the smoke and opened
its doors high in the sky. Something large and dark fell
slowly to the ground. It was a big red and blue truck. It
drove quickly after the Decepticon and then transformed
into another giant robot. This was the Autobot leader,
Optimus Prime.
Optimus looked into Demolisher’s red eyes and
with one strong arm he lifted him off the ground. The
Decepticon couldn’t win against the strongest and
cleverest Autobot on Earth. He crashed on his back,
broken and dying. Optimus stood over him. ‘Any last
words?’ he asked.
Demolisher looked up at Optimus. His dark red eyes
were full of hate. ‘The Fallen will live again.’ His words
nearly disappeared in the wind but Optimus heard them.
‘Not today,’ he said and he pointed his gun at
Demolisher’s head.
‘Hurry up, Sam,’ Sam’s dad shouted up the stairs. ‘We
have to leave now.’
His mom was crying. She held a child’s pair of shoes in
her hands. ‘My big boy – going to university!’ She cried
even more loudly.
‘We’re happy for you son,’ said his dad. ‘Now stop
crying, Judy. Think about our holiday in France.’
‘You’re still my little boy!’ She put her arms round Sam.
‘You must come home for every holiday! Or we’ll come to
you …’
Sam’s face was red. ‘Mom! Please!’ He went up to
his room to get his bags. His mobile phone rang and he
smiled. It was his girlfriend, Mikaela. While he talked to
her, he put more clothes in his bag.
‘I’m going to take my old shirt,’ he told her. ‘You know,
the one that I was wearing when we were in the Autobot
fight last year.’ As he lifted the shirt, something fell out of
the pocket. It was a small piece of metal. Sam picked it up

but it was very hot. He dropped it quickly. Then a strange
thing happened. It burned through the floor and fell into
the kitchen.
‘I think a piece of the Allspark was in my shirt,’ he
shouted to Mikaela on the phone as he ran downstairs.
In the kitchen, even stranger things were happening. All
the machines, all the knives and forks suddenly changed
into very small robots. They were jumping off the tables
and running across the cupboards. They jumped at Sam’s
legs and pulled him onto the floor. Then they fired at him!
Sam ran upstairs to escape them and jumped out of the
window. The small machines were everywhere.
Sam’s mom ran screaming out of the house. ‘Lie down!’
shouted his dad. ‘Not again!’ he said, looking angrily at
his son.
Suddenly, a yellow car came out of the garage and
transformed into a big robot. It was Bee, Sam’s own car
Autobot. It fired at the small machines until they all
stopped moving. Everything was quiet again.
Sam went into the kitchen and carefully picked up the
piece of metal. He put it in a small bag.
Mikaela arrived on her motorbike. Her long, black
hair flew behind her in the wind. ‘Are you OK?’ She was
worried.
‘Put this in a safe place,’ said Sam and he gave Mikaela
the bag. He put his arms round her. ‘We can talk every
day,’ he said softly.
Mikaela looked at him. Her dark eyes were big and
shining. ‘Just say it,’ she said.
‘I … like you very, very much,’ Sam said. But he wasn’t
ready to say the ‘love’ word … yet.

A long way from Earth, the Decepticon Soundwave
landed on a US military satellite*. Its long metal arms
went round the satellite. Now the Decepticons could hear
every conversation between the military leaders on Earth.

A military plane brought an important man, Theodore
Galloway, to meet Major Lennox and the Autobots. He
stood with Major Lennox in front of Optimus Prime.
General Morshower, the most important man in the US
military, was also listening to the conversation on the radio.
‘Lennox!’ Galloway said coldly. ‘You made big mistakes
in Shanghai. Now everyone knows about the Autobots.
They must leave Earth now!’
Major Lennox didn’t like this little man. ‘The Autobots
are our partners,’ he said. ‘They have given us a lot of
help!’ He pointed to Optimus Prime. ‘This robot is our
friend.’
* A satellite is something in the sky that sends TV and radio to
different places on Earth.
