2015 July Newsletter
International Women’s Club of the Var – Newsletter July 2015
======================================================================
I have been visiting Ireland over the past week – and many of you may share the same feeling
of not recognising the land of your birth. So many things change – there may be roads where
no roads existed, and whole districts that formerly were fields have been concreted over – but to
compensate, the spirit of the people will probably have remained the same. The ability to smile,
to joke, and to share memories will be always there to cherish.
I am sure that many of you will cherish the memory of the celebrations of the 10th Anniversary of
the IWCV, of which I have been hearing good things. There are just a few photos of the party in
the newsletter, but remember there is a full record of the evening on the IWCV website. Do
have a look at it.

Tuesday 9 June – 10th Anniversary Summer Party
Under a splendidly decorated marquee, 150 members and guests celebrated the tenth
anniversary of the IWCV. La Camandoule excelled again - providing a four-course feast
culminating in a huge birthday cake which appeared close to midnight. Members were able to
dance and cheer the beginning of a new decade for the club as the live band played everyone's
hits from the golden era of rock music. All together a fabulous evening to celebrate a club that
provides a social hub for so many living in this gorgeous area. Thanks to the committee for
organising such a great celebration.

Tuesday 16 June - IWCV Annual General Meeting
Nearly 40 members were present at the AGM, which was, as ever, very efficiently run by IWCV
President. Gill Hill Miller, In her President’s report, Gill summarised the activities of the club
throughout the past twelve months and thanked all the organisers of the various sections. She
particularly drew attention to the work of Daphne Urbanska who has been club treasurer for 7
years but who has now stood down from the committee.
The review of the Annual Financial Report highlighted that the club had made donations of
€4,000 to charities – the Relais Solidarite in Tourrettes which provides food parcels to the needy,
the Amicale des Sapeurs Pompiers du Canton de Fayence and Mary’s Meals.
Membership secretary, Julie Robins, reported that there were 222 members, of whom 58 were
new. She said that 18 nationalities were represented and they came from 28 villages – we
really are an international crowd!
Di Riddell (and her hostesses) was thanked for
the tremendous work organising a full
programme of PLLs this year,
Gill announced that the IWCV was on the point
of setting up its own Pickleball activity, with the
aim that members could just turn up and enjoy
themselves without needing to be in a league or
formal group (more news below).
Gill now starts the third year of her Presidency,
supported by her committee, Eliane Kiendl,
Francesca Megnet, Gill Miller, Diane Riddell,
Julie Robins and Lynne Ward, and newly
elected member, Pauline Fraser.
AGMs can be dull events - but it speaks for the friendliness of our club that our AGM was a
lively and friendly affair.
Tuesday 14 July - Creative Art Adventures
This will be held at Lynn’s house in Callian starting at 14.15.
Mystery Picture - including fabric, buttons, aquarelles, markers, found objects, stranded cotton
etc etc
Does this whet your appetite? If you would like to join me, or wish to know more please email
me ([email protected]) or telephone 04 94 47 03 96

the IWCV charity fund.

want, but that are in good condition and not cracked or broken.
Ideas – tableware, cutlery, decorative items, kitchenware, suitcases, bric-a-brac, kids’ toys,
bikes, bedding, ex-husbands (Gill’s suggestion)!!!
We look forward to your support.
Pot Luck Lunches 2015
The pot luck lunch menu for the year continued on Sunday 14 June when the storm vanished,
the rain stopped and the sun came out so 42 happy folk could spend a delicious afternoon in the
rose garden and pool at Zigi and Will Houston's villa in Seillans. During four hours the guests
ate their way through many courses of excellent food supplied by themselves. All was washed
down with copious amounts of Rose and other vintages. A wonderful Provence Sunday lunch!
Thank you Zigi and Will.

Pickleball
Gill writes: “Sorry to say that the pickleball saga goes on a little – and we are still not quite
there, but the situation is looking more positive.
The good news is that we should be able to play pickleball as an IWCV Club Activity on Friday
mornings from 10 am to 12 noon in Fayence.
This would be for club members and their partners to take part in.
We do need to know the names of those of you who are interested to join in this activity
on a reasonably regular basis.
So if you are interested would you please email me [email protected] and let
me know the names of those who wish to play.
After which, further information will be forthcoming.”
