Description:
Although this unit was planned to be taught as a two week unit there is enough materials her to
spread it out over the entire school year and touch on nearly every subject.
Objectives:
How to choose the right stable, instructor, lessons, and riding style for you
What to expect from your first lesson and what equipment you’ll need
The basics of horse breeds, anatomy, grooming, healthcare, and nutrition
Understands that many activities can be modified to be more health-enhancing
Understands that regular participation in physical activities of personal interest is necessary to
maintain an active lifestyle
Knows that living things go through a process of growth and change
Knows that Horses progress through life cycles of birth, growth and development, reproduction,
and death
Knows that Horses have distinct structures and body systems that serve specific functions in
growth, survival, and reproduction
Knows that Horses have a variety of specialized cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems that
perform specialized functions and that the function of these systems affects one another
Knows that Horses can react to internal and environmental stimuli through behavioral
response which may be determined by heredity or from past experience
Knows that the transfer of energy is essential to Horses
Uses various information sources, including those of a technical nature, to accomplish specific
tasks

4 What are short white markings called on horses legs (situated just above their hooves)? Socks
5 What are long white markings called on horses legs (from the hooves up)? Stockings
6 How many teeth do horses have? Between 36 and 44 teeth depending on age.
7 What is an ergot and where would you find it? It is a small soft section of hoof like material
that grows on the back of the fetlock joint.
8 What is the bony part of the horses’ tail called? Dock
9 What is a chestnut and where would you find it? It is a very soft hoof like material that grows
on the inside of the leg, just above the knee.
10 Where would you find a horses’ barrel? The barrel is formed by the ribs, so it is located
between the front and back legs. The barrel holds the internal organs like heart and lungs.
11 Do ponies ever grow to be horses? No, ponies and horses are different in that ponies never
exceed 14.2 hands in height (measured at the wither). Horses will always be taller than 14.2
hands in height.
12 Where is the frog situated on a horse? The frog is located underneath the horses’ hooves – it

25 Are horses’ herbivores or carnivores? Horses are herbivores; they only eat plants and plant

Arctic and Antarctic regions, but they live everywhere else.
27 What age do horses commonly live to? It is common for horses to live anywhere between 25
and 35 years but they have been known to live to 40 and older but only when looked after with
good feeding etc. The oldest verifiable record is of a horse that lived to be 62 years old. The
oldest living pony (in Guiness Book of Records) lived to the age of 56.
28 Are the senses of horses better or worse than those of humans? The senses (sight, hearing
and smell) of a horse are generally considered to be much better than a person.
29 Do horses lie down when they’re sleeping? No, generally horses stand up when sleeping
(there are exceptions; some horses prefer to lie down).
30 Apart from Mustangs (US) and Brumbies (Australia) are there any wild horses still alive
today? Yes, the Przewalski’s Horse is the last known truly wild horse still existing today. They
are alive in zoo’s around the world and they also have a small population in the wild (they are
also known as the Mongolian Wild Horse).
31 Besides the horse there are six other species in the equine family, what are they? Donkey,
Mountain Zebra, Plains Zebra, Grevy’s Zebra, Kiang, Kulan (including the subspecies - Onager).
32 Can horses breed with other members of the equine family? Yes e.g. a mare can breed with a
male donkey (Jack) and will produce a mule.
33 What is a male horse called? A gelding is a male horse that has been gelded and a stallion is a

Bronco - a wild, untamed horse, typically used in reference to the American mustang.
Brumby - a wild or untrained Australian horse
Charger - a medieval war horse of lighter build not to be confused with a destrier
cob - any horse of a short-legged, stout variety, with short legs, and a compact body, neck
and back
colt - an unaltered male horse from birth till the age of 4.
destrier - a heavy, strong medieval war horse not to be confused with a charger or
palfrey
draught horse - heavy, muscular beast of burden
filly -female horse from birth till the age of 4.
foal - infant horse of either sex
garron - small and disdained horse
gelding - a castrated male horse of any age
god dog - how the Apaches referred to horses
green - a term used to describe an inexperienced horse
hack - A horseback ride taken for the purpose of pleasure, either for horse or rider.
hackney - a specific breed of flashy, elegant driving pony
Hand - a unit of measuring used frequently to measure a horses height. One hand is

horse - adult equine of either sex over 14.2 hh (58 inches, 1.47 m)
mare - adult female horse
mustang - a feral horse found in the western plains of North America.
nag - An over-worked horse.
palfrey - a smooth gaited type, a riding horse, often used incorrectly to mean a woman's
horse, but in fact, was ridden by knights and ladies and instead refers to the light build of
the riding horses body. The word being derived from the latin for 'light horse'.

shelt or shelty - a Shetland pony
stallion - adult, male horse that is able to produce offspring
weanling - a young horse that has just been weaned from their mother (usually 6 months

Bay- From light brown to very dark brown with black points and intermingling red or
blue hairs in some cases. (Points refer to the main, tail, muzzle, lower legs, and tips of the
ears). Four types - Dark bay (mixed blue hair), blood bay (mixed red hair), light bay and
just bay.
Brindle - One of the rarest colors of horse. Characterisics are any color with "zebralike" stripes.
Brown - A bay without any black points.
Buckskin- A bay horse with a gene that 'dilutes' the coat colour to a yellow, cream, or
gold while keeping the black points (mane, tail, muzzle, ears, legs).
Chestnut- A reddish body color with no black.
Cremello - A chestnut horse with two dilute genes that washes out almost all colour.
Dapple gray: a gray colored horse with lighter gray spots, or dapples, scattered
throughout.
Dun - Yellowish brown with a dorsal stripe along the back and occasionally zebra
stripings on the legs.
Fleabitten gray - refers to usually red hairs flecked in the coat of a gray horse.
Gray - A horse with black skin and clear hairs.
Grulla- A black horse with a dun gene. It is often a grayish/silver colored horse with
dark dun factors
Pinto - a multi-colored horse with large patches of brown, white, and/or black and white.
Paint - In 1962, the American Paint Horse Association began to recognize pinto horses
with known Quarter Horse and/or Thoroughbred bloodlines as a separate breed. Today,
Paint horses are the world's fifth most popular breed.
Palomino-chestnut horse that has one cream dilute gene that turns the horse to a golden,
yellow, or tan shade with a flaxen (white) mane and tail.
Perlino - Exactly like a cremello but a bay horse with two dilute genes.
Roan - a color pattern that causes white hairs to be sprinkled over the horse's body color
.
Rose gray: a gray horse with a pinkish tinge to its coat.
Sorrel - a light brown coat with a flaxen mane and tail.
Splash - a genetically controlled horse coat variation.
Tobiano - a genetic trait among horses which produces a characteristic white pattern in
the coat.
White - Any non-albino white horse is called a gray, even though they appear white. All
white, may be the result of overlapping pinto, appaloosa, or sabino markings. Rarely there
are true white horses born.

Cut out book in one piece. Cut along dotted lines to make flaps. Fold
flaps over onto the main book. Cut out the three title boxes and glue
them on the front of the flaps.
For older kids, fill in and cut out text boxes and glue to the inside of
the flaps.
For younger kids, cut out horse pictures and glue to inside of
appropriate flaps.
This can be used as a mini-book or as individual sheets.
To make book: cut out both pages, glue last square of first page to the
blank square of second. Fold, accordion style. (The book will open
towards the left)
Or, cut out all the squares (disregarding the blank square), and staple or
fasten together at the top or sides.
