During the Normandy invasion Earl was in a B – 17 receiving the Air Medal for this campaign. June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foothold in Normandy. The D-Day cost was high -more than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded -- but more than 100,000 soldiers began the march across Europe to defeat Hitler. “ To P r e s e r v e , P r o m o t e , a n d P r o t e c t o u r S c h e L a n g e n ” Squol Quol Community Updates (Jim Adams continued from page 1) participated in D – Day what was the beginning of the liberation of Europe, four in the Army and one in the Army Air Corps (what is now the Air Force). Served in the US Army 29th Division. From the beginning everything went wrong at Omaha. Special “DD” tanks (amphibious Sherman tanks fitted with flotation screens) that were supposed to support the 29th division sank in the choppy waters of the Channel. Only 2 of the 29 launched made it to the beach. Jim carried a B.A.R. (Browning Automatic Rifle) during his time in the Army. “When the doors of his landing craft opened he hit the beach and fired into the hills.” The fighting, the death, the noise lasted into the night, “It seemed to last forever.” “Half the people were dead,” Jim recalls, “heads gone, arms gone. I saw a guy carrying his arm up the bluff. He didn’t want to lose it.” “The next day I was wounded when an artillery shell exploded, shrapnel went through my helmet and into my head. There was blood all down my face, I was wondering if I lost my eye. A priest actually gave me my last rights.” (Anthony “Dudley” Jefferson continued from page 1) Each Demolition team was loaded in an LCM, (landing craft) these landing craft carried a ton of explosives and accessories, all of which were hand carried. Anthony was a demolitionist; he carried eight sticks of C2 explosives strapped to his back and his front. “On the way into the beach these boats were loaded with explosives, when one would get hit they would explode and the one next to it would explode too.” “Most of the men in my unit were killed by gunfire; some were blown up when bullets struck the explosives strapped to our bodies.” Anthony received his Purple Heart for taking a bullet through the back of his hand during D – Day. This project is sponsored by Allied Arts of Bellingham to encourage students to express themselves in various art media. Many schools participate in this display of creativity. Lum- mi Nation students’ art is displayed in Woods Coffee (Prospect St. ) in downtown Bellingham throughout the month of May. As a part of this yearly celebration of art each spring, the Lummi Nation School students who participate, go on a field trip to see the art work and connect to specific people in the art world. This year, we were privileged to visit Jeff Aspnes, a gifted local pho- tographer who is displaying his striking photographs at the Blue Horse Gallery. Jeff spent a great deal of time teaching our students about photographic techniques and learning to appreciate their own creativity. He encouraged all of the students to follow their own individual interests and to strive for excellence in what they choose to do. He shared many “tricks of the trade” regarding setting up and shooting photos to get beautiful effects. All of the students really enjoyed meeting with Jeff in the three sessions he held for the group. Another kind patron of the arts was Brend from Allied Arts. She welcomed the students into the gallery and shared information about many teaching artists who display their work there. She was very willing to answer all of the students’ questions and en- couraged them to continue to be creative through art. She also gave out animal crackers, yum! The field trip concluded at Cornwall Park with pizza and time to relax before boarding the school bus for the trip back to Lummi Nation School. The students’ behavior was exemplary and they represented their school and the Lummi Nation with pride. 6th grade students in Mrs. Campbells class report Field trip fun Lummi nation Elijah Wilson, 6th grade: When we went to the Childrens’ Art Walk, everyone got to see all of the wonderful art. With the new building, students and faculty will be able to conduct environmental research that supports healthy, clean, and vibrant environments that sustain tribal people. The new 4,200-squarefoot building was aptly named the Salish Sea Research Center. The Salish Sea has sustained tribes along its coast for centuries, and now research at NWIC will help support the health of the Salish Sea’s waters and shorelines. “While the name of the center contains ‘Salish Sea,’ we are by no means exclusively marine focused. We are also laying the groundwork for an outdoor teaching and research program for native plants on campus,” said Dr. Marco Hatch, Associate Director of the National Indian Center for Marine Environmental Research and Education (NICMERE), which is located on NWIC’s campus. Lummi nation The facility will support research in all programs of study – particularly the college’s Bachelor of Science 8 in Native Environmental Science program. It increases opportunities for hands-on research giving students the experience needed to succeed in the workplace and in graduate school. It also helps foster partnerships with federal, state and tribal organizations. “The Salish Sea Research Center provides our students the opportunity to work with faculty to engage in research projects and develop their science and technical skills,” NWIC President Justin Guillory said. “Of course, the building itself is great, but the learning that will occur inside the building is where our mission as a tribal college comes alive. New buildings help us build more students.” Research already planned for the facility includes an examination of Bellingham Bay nutrient and oxygen dynamics, which is going on its seventh field season this year – that project is being done in partnership with Western Washington University and Washington State University’s Whatcom County Extension. Also, in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association and Lummi Natural Resources, NWIC researchers have begun a project examining the dy- ter we ask what lessons can namics of red tides. be learned about how they promoted sustainability, “Because of the in- about how they interacted creased capacity of this with this place in a respectcenter, we are able to work ful manner,” Hatch said. with Northwest Fisheries “One example of this work Science Center and Friday is the partnership with Harbor Laboratories to the Heiltsuk First Nation study the relationship be- looking at the ecological tween the loss of eelgrass impacts of a traditional and increased harmful al- form of aquaculture called gal blooms,” Hatch said. clam gardens.” “The center has already resulted in a leading exThe Salish Sea Research pert in eelgrass planning Center was funded by a gento come to the college and erous grant from the Naspend a quarter here co- tional Science Foundation teaching a course on eel- and by NWIC’s $44 million grass and working with the capital campaign. SQUOL QUOL Education Lummi Food Sovereignty gets a big boost The Northwest Indian College project was awarded a $65,000 grant by ConAgra Foods Foundation Submitted by NWIC Food sovereignty is a topic that is being discussed more and more in Indian Country these days – we can’t be sovereign if we can’t control our food sources. That idea has prompted Northwest Indian College’s (NWIC) Cooperative Extension Department to implement food sovereignty programs at two of its reservation sites: Muckleshoot and Lummi. The Muckleshoot project was the first of the two to launch about four years ago. From the get go, the program was popular in the Muckleshoot community and received national attention from other tribes, donor organizations and the media. Last year, motivated by the success of the Muckleshoot project and requests from the Lummi community, NWIC launched the Lummi Food Sovereignty Project. Now this younger project is beginning to see its share of support. Most recently, that support came in the form of a generous $65,000 grant from The ConAgra Foods Foundation. the Lummi Nation Service Organization to form a NWIC is one of 12 non- Lummi Food Sovereignty profit organizations in eight working team. states across the nation selected to receive a 2013 “We can use all of these Community Impact Grant resources to support the from The ConAgra Foods desire of the Lummi peoFoundation. Now in its fourth year, The ConAgra Foods Foundation has invested more than $2 million in Community Impact Grants programming – including enrollment in governmentassistance programs, nutrition education, advocacy and direct access to food. The program aims to provide more than seven million meals to children across the country. “Without access to healthy food – even temporarily – children can face life-long wellness consequences,” said Kori Reed, vice president, ConAgra Foods Foundation and Cause. “That’s why programs like Northwest Indian College’s are so important. Being on the frontlines every day, Northwest Indian College is nourishing these children so they can unlock their highest potential, and we want to empower that success.” 2 0 13 NWIC Seaweed harvesting class ~ May 29th 9 Squol Quol Education Recipe of the Month: Low Sugar Strawberry Rhubarb Crunch Each month Lummi Tribal member Gail Julius shares a healthy recipe with readers in an effort to make eating healthy easy and fun. SQUOL Opinions & Perspectives Bob’s Garage “Then and Now” made this magazine so appealing -- mainly that the staff was not only nuts, and possessed with great writing skills, but that they were shriekingly intelligent as well. Despite that they never condescended to their readers. It’s as though we were all engaged in some very naughty and childish pranks with some very expensive equipment. This is not unlike what the BBC TV show “Top Gear” is doing now. There are several examples that come to mind Those who remember the seventies will remember a product that was marketed in response to the growing sexual revolution: FDS (Feminine Deodorant Spray). There was a lot of “nudge-nudge, wink-wink” associated with that. There was also a series of ads usually found in the back sections of magazines for “The Famous Artists’ School”. Leave it to Car and Driver to put these two together and come up with a series of articles on the “Famous Drivers’ School” (FDS). The premise was simple: You paid your tuition, instruc- tional material was sent to you along with exams after each lesson. The idea was that you would perform each exam on your driveway. You would then cut up your driveway into squares and ship them to the FDS. The famous drivers would assemble the chunks of driveway and rate your performance according to the skid marks that appeared on it. sentence from the article gives you a hint of just how nuts they were getting: “… We lost some time in preparing the car to get a new paint job (the acid dipping had ruined the original one)….” There are other examples, but space limits me here. While digging through the internet looking for info on this column, I managed to run across an entry in Brooks Peterson’s blog – “Auto Pilot”. The title of the blog was “Look What They’ve Done to Our Car Mags, Ma” As I read it, I began to realize that I wasn’t the only one out in the world who’s noticed a change in how automotive journalism is pursued. If you get a chance, give it a read. It’s well worth the trouble. The site is: http:// blogs.caller.com/auto_pilot/archives/2007/05. In the seventies, the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) introduced Showroom Stock racing in their many classes of competition. Car and Driver fielded their own entry with a (then) brand new Ford Pint with the German 1.9 L (big block) engine. They went into detail describing fitting the roll bar, cutting the front coil springs, re-arcing the rear springs, shaving the tread on the tires, and many other stunts that they pulled to just barely comply with the SCCA’s regulaUntil next time, keep it tions while trying to gain between the ditches and the an unfair advantage. He supported his family through logging, working construction, commercial fishing and was a cook aboard a purse seiner. He loved swimming, dancing, and golfing. He enjoyed playing pool, darts, cards, cribbage, shuffle board and gambling at any casino. He went hunting in Oregon, Washington and Idaho for deer, elk, moose, duck and pheasants, often with Charlie and Jim of Oregon; Joe, Gary, Jim & Mike Taylor of Lapwai, Idaho; and with his buddies, nephews and son Gabriel in all 3 States. He spent time in Bremerton visiting and enjoyed going to canoe races with his kids. A favorite past time was taking his kids to the drive-in theater. He and Marie would travel to yearly events and fairs and no matter where they went Jewell and baby M would find them. Everyone loved his spaghetti, smoked salmon, turkey and barbecued oysters. His family was very important to him and he held all family gatherings at his house. He was very fond of his lawn mower and used any excuse to ride it; he would ride up to his kids’ houses and offer to mow their grass for twenty dollars. If you happened to stop by for a visit he most likely would be watching a John Wayne movie or some sort of western and would of course offer you something to eat. I am running for Position 5 of the Ferndale City Council and desire the continued positive connection between the Lummi Nation and the City of Ferndale for the next generations to come. Some of the Lummi Nation may remember me recording the Blackhawk and Wolfpack footballs games. I have work with the LIBC twice in the communications department. Another Lummi Nation experience was being part of the Paddle to Lummi, pulling from Port Hardy down the Inside Passage past Vancouver Island on the way back home to the Lummi Nation shores. I pulled the following year and recorded the traditional story of how the Lummi People would travel the Inside Passage for trade and potlatch from an elder storyteller as he shared of the historical routes the Lummi People as they traveled throughout the Salish Seas. My experiences with the Lummi Nation have grown to an understanding of the culture. Thank you, Robert W.
