HPHS Orchestra, Bagpipers and Killdares
“Rockin’ the Centennial”, a perfect collaboration
of music for the ages - HPHS Orchestra, HP Bagpipers and Dallas’ very own hard-driving, alternative Celtic rock group, the Killdares, provided those
attending the free concert in Palmer Auditorium
with a night to remember.
!
HPHS Orchestra Director Peggy Tucker is a longtime fan of the group, and she and The Killdares
founder, thought the collaboration was a natural
fit. Highland Park High School’s Bagpipe Corp members, Stuart Forrester,
Benjamin Klimko and Andie Caroline Dorn, on stage with world-class
Killdare piper, Matt Willis.
Summer 2014
"We'd heard about the Scots and the school's reputation for having a great music program - with
bagpipers - which we loved,"
Killdares’ lead
singer and drummer Tim Smith said.
!
"What a great chance for our students to see up
close how professional musicians create their own
unique sound," Tucker said. "The students were
thrilled to join the band onstage."
"Rocking the Centennial" concert was partially
funded with a grant from HP Arts.

My family moved into the
Park Cities as our oldest
son was entering kindergarten at University Park
Elementary. It was a bittersweet time for us, leaving
New York City and all that
it had to offer to move to
Texas, uncertain of the impact the culture would have
on my family.
We were
blessed to find ourselves in the Park Cities, embraced in our neighborhood schools by the art
teachers, librarians and the venerable Jan Baker
as our music teacher. As we moved into middle
school, Terry White was the pied piper who captured the hearts of my children and our family has
been marching with the band ever since. High
School brought about amazing opportunities – far
too many to take advantage of, actually – but my
daughter (and many others) somehow managed
to fit in eight Fine Arts credits in her four years!
This welcoming environment pervades our schools
and creates an opportunity for every student to
find a place (or two or three) in the arts. As a
mom of three small children, new to the neighborhood, I had no idea that so many of these wonderful programs in the elementary schools were
funded by HP Arts and La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas. I certainly had no awareness of the intentional strategies in place to keep the arts as a core
part of our curriculum from kindergarten through
high school. As I look back, 14 years later, I realize that these programs and the friendships and
life skills that naturally occurred were the “bubble
wrap” that often provided much needed relief
from the competitiveness of academics and sports
and the opportunity for personal growth and
leadership. They also provided the opportunity
for laughter, frustration, personal accountability,
perspective, tough life lessons and reconciliation.
Support for the arts in our schools empowers
teachers who provide these opportunities and
2013-14 was no exception. This year alone, HP
Arts funded over $70,000 in requests by HPISD
teachers for enrichment in the visual, performing,
literary and musical arts categories K-12. Many
of the stories highlighted in the Artisan are,

Epic Battle of the Bands
In May, the Battle of the Bands took place in front of nearly
150 people at Christ the King Parish Center.
Chaired by senior Cash Spicer and sophomore Mary Houle,
the successful rock competition netted over $1,200, all for
the benefit of HP Arts.
Traditionally, a fund-raiser for the Highland Park Orchestra,
this year the Orchestra teamed with the HP Band and selected HP Arts as the proceeds beneficiary. No Water for Ike,
wowed the crowd and won the Battle of the Bands. No Water for Ike walked away with a two-hour recording session
donated by The Sound Foundation for the winning band
members (shown above) include Drew Madding, Hunter
Lukken, Gillet Langston, Henry Kumpf, David McCollough,
Raef Rothschild and Ike McInstosh.
Second place winner, Bleached Out, performed in the
Gnarpalooza festival held at The Sound Foundation. Also
performing at Battle of the Bands; Spicyman and the Houlegans, Predetermined Failure, Respectable Men and Yugen.

involved in this year’s Battle!
entertaining, inspiring and, in the case of the
Killdares, pretty flashy! I would encourage you to
also pay attention to the “Your $ at Work” on page 9,
highlighting the costly work of infrastructure required
to support these amazing programs. As always, we
thank you for your involvement through your generous
support of HP Arts. Please consider joining us as a
member for the 2014-15 year through the Back to
School Sign Up or by visiting us at our website. And
most of all, please encourage your children,
grandchildren and neighbors to take advantage of all
of the amazing arts programs and performances
available right here in our community.

HP Literary Festival Features Mark Salzman
The Lit Fest celebrated
"Write Your World" events
in February with a wide
range of assemblies and
workshops for HPHS
students and the larger
community. The two-day
festival featured awardwinning author Mark
Salzman, as well over
Keynote Speaker and Author,
twenty poets, playwrights,
Mark Salzman
journalists, storytellers, and
songwriters. The weekend culminated with an Open Mic
Nite at Half Price Books where more than fifty HPHS
students gathered to share poetry, musings, and music.
As Lit Fest Co-Chairs Amy Berry and Jill Sayre summed it
up in "Dr. Seuss-style" tribute:

Centennial for the district? We had to celebrate.
So Lit Fest lined up special gigs-they had to be first rate!
We had fun with Keynote Salzman, Workshops and
Open Mic Night
Birthday Cheers Dear District-we hope Lit Fest honored
you just right!
The HP Literary Festival depends upon the cooperation
and partnership of many groups, the English deportment
faculty and even the HP Design Company for the Festival’s
promotional media.
!
Mark Salzman, selected as this year’s keynote speaker is
an accomplished author as well as actor, cellist, and
Guggenheim fellow. The writer is best known for his 1986
memoir, Iron and Silk, which describes his experiences
living and teaching in China during the 1980’s. He later
penned the screenplay and acted in, as himself, the movie
based upon his novel Iron and Silk.

HP Arts Awards 2013-2014
And the Winners Are...
Kay Braly
HP Arts Advocate Award Recipient
In April, Ginny Frye, HP Arts Ex-Officio
Advisor, surprised Kay Braly by announcing her name as this year’s recipient of the
HP Arts Advocate award. Given annually,
the award recognizes someone who has
worked to promote the Arts and Arts education within our schools and community.
True to the very essence of the award, Kay
Braly’s “artistic nature and architectural
background make her an amazing advocate and volunteer for the arts”, according
to award nominator, Ginny Frye.
alumni and faculty of HPISD, including Annie Poon, Class of 1995, with exhibits on
permanent display at MOMA.
Kay’s advocacy reaches broadly from
school district to community and church
and even internationally. Kay used her architect skills to design and help raise funds
to build a medical clinic in Kenya. Not
only functional space, Kay envisioned the
clinic’s waiting room to be a beautiful reminder of the world around them.
In summarizing Kay’s achievements on the
acclaimed exhibit, Frye states “The oldest
artist graduated in 1958 and the youngest
will graduate in 2022. I did the math. Just
think, in that one exhibit 64 years of HPISD
students benefitted from Kay’s advocacy
and hard work in the community. Now that
is remarkable!”
After completing her three-year HP Arts
board tenure, Kay is now serving as a very
active Ex-Officio, stepping up to help
wherever needed. Kay also serves on the
Art Team at Highland Park Presbyterian
Church where she envisioned a unique collaboration with HPISD in celebration of the
district’s 100th year. Working with Linda
Raya, HPISD Administration and the art
teachers, Kay put together a wonderful HP
Centennial showcase, comprised of 41
pieces of art from 21 artists, all students,

Ashley Richardson
Arts in Education Teacher Award
Each year, HP Arts bestows its “Arts in Education Teacher Award” upon a HPISD non-fine
arts teacher who has meaningfully incorporated arts within his or her curriculum. This year’s
winner was Ashley Richardson, pictured at left
with Celia Crank - HP Arts VP and Allison Doherty - HP Arts Treasurer.
Ms. Richardson
teaches English III at HPHS, where she frequently uses the arts to bring the literature to
life.
From Left: Celia Crank, Ashley Richardson and Allison Doherty
This year, she was looking for a way to wrap
up a study of the novel The Great Gatsby for
her English III students at HPHS. “I wanted to
do something fun and relevant. With homecoming around the corner, I thought, why not
teach them a dance from the 1920s?”
She applied to HP Arts for funds to hire two
professional dancers for the entire day. “Ms.
Richardson’s creative idea to use dance in English class is a perfect example of how the arts
can enrich any curriculum. The entire committee was excited and we were thrilled to fund
it,” said Christy Gehlbach, HP Arts Programs
chair.

Linda Raya HP Arts Scholarships
In May, HP Arts was proud to award scholarships to Miller Susens and Sam Malone.
Each year, HP Arts selects two outstanding Highland Park High School Seniors for the
Linda Raya Scholarship. Award winners must have participated in four years of Fine
Arts, pursue a Fine Arts course of study
in college and have distinguished
themselves in the arts, as scholars and
citizens. Accordingly, Miller Susens and
Sam Malone are both accomplished in
music; Susens accumulated regional and
state honors with Orchestra and Malone
sang with the prestigious choral group,
Lads and Lassies and Park Version.
Susens will pursue Music Education at
Indiana University and Malone plans to
major in Visual Arts and minor in Vocal
Per formance at Baylor University.
Congratulations Miller and Sam!

After studying fossils, each student made their own
fossil plaster imprint. “Throughout history, great scientists have been quoted as saying that without ART
experiences as a child, their science endeavors
would never have been possible. Art gives scientists
motor skills and the ability to creatively problem
solve while creating models and visual representations of the universe large and small,” said MakiRowland.

Dinosaurs Rock!
Bradfield Elementary science teacher, Margaret
Maki-Rowland, along with science teachers from
Armstrong, Hyer, and UP Elementary schools, combined science and art when they hosted “Dinosaurs
Rock” as part of their “Fossils Tell Earth’s Long History” unit, funded by HP Arts in January.
“Theater, music, and art history all play an important
role in the science fields. The HPISD elementary science lab teachers all agree that teaching children to
connect art and science is vital for laying the foundation for our young scientists.” said Maki-Rowland
“We are thankful for the funding HP Arts provided
and their commitment to connecting arts across the
curriculum for all students.”

In May, fourth graders at UP and Hyer elementary
schools had the privilege of hearing from Bol Malual

brother and parents when
his village was burned by

“Painting” with Wool

In April, fourth graders at all four
elementary schools enjoyed an
unusual learning opportunity that
encompassed geography, history,
music and art. The students spent a
week learning about “Painting
with Wool” with Janet Reynolds
and Mimi Smith from The Brilliant
Art Ladies. The students spent time
in their art classrooms learning
how large sheets of fabric are
created in Mongolia. They listened
to traditional Mongolian music as they replicated, on a small scale, the felting process. Students were then able to pick out strips of wool in bright
colors to create a unique work of art.
learned to how to fight - acting style.
Award winning actor and theatrical
combat instructor, James Williams
!
Hambone, Hambone
taught Mrs. Linda Raya's theater students and Mr. Masters' Theater Arts
II class, how to throw a punch, or at
least make it look like they did. Mr.
Williams taught the students for three
days last week how to fight on stage
or in front of a camera. They learned
theatrical combat using their fist,
swords and other weapons.
In March, the perennially popular and
rhythmic pied piper, Mark Shelton
bounded into music classes in all four
elementary schools. Mr. Shelton shared
with the eager young music makers they
could "Strike, Scrape or Shake" just
about any object to create a percussion
sound. A quick demo of "hambone" proved the
human body is the oldest percussion instrument around. Mark then shared the
vast differences and sounds of the hammered dulcimer, snare drum, doumbec
and the halo.
!
The kids loved the fast paced, energetic
delivery and were up and clapping as
Mark played them out of the auditorium.
Boondoggle Author
In early March, author Gary Karton (shown left) visited with second, third
and fourth grade classes about his book, “The Last Akaway” and its hero,
“Brody Boondoggle”. Mr. Karton shared his early reading difficulties with
the students and how a teacher inspired his confidence, reinforcing that
“different is your gift, even if it doesn’t feel like it now.” Bradfield librarian,
Dana Phillips, read the book aloud to the classes ahead of Mr. Karton’s
visit, saying “it was a great way to introduce quality literature…creating
motivation within the students to try other great books. Mr. Karton’s book
grabbed everyone’s attention. It was full of such beautiful vocabulary, an
interesting plot line and amazing cliffhangers.”
