The Artisan 2013 School Year
President Continued from Page 1 Two Years in the Making... During school year 2012-13, there were many great examples of this unique form of social networking in our community. In the Fall, HPISD families enjoyed the Dallas ArboretumÕs exhibition of the works of world-renowned glass sculptor Dale Chihuly. ChihulyÕs ornamental and fantastic glassworks inspired new Bradfield Art Te a c h e r J e s s i c a Smith to engage her young students in creating Chihul y esque creations out of melt-able plastic. Their work was exhibited at the HP Arts Faculty Appreciation Event in January, where it inspired all who attended. Markus Zusak, author and illustrator of The Book Thief, a young adult novel beloved by adults and students alike, was the keynote speaker at the 2013 HP Literary Festival (another event sponsored in part by HP Arts.) The community turned out to hear him speak, and the lines for his autograph were so long that additional book-(and tshirt)-signing sessions were scheduled at the High School the next day to accommodate all of the people who wanted to visit with him briefly and experience his form of artistic expression firsthand. Grandparents and parents stood in line with the young people of our community, experiencing literature and art together in a very connected way. This 2013 edition of the Artisan highlights many more of the arts enrichment and educational experiences promoted and funded by HP Arts during the 2012-13 school year. This year alone, HP Arts fulfilled $70,000 in requests by HPISD teachers for enrichment in the visual, performing, literary and musical arts categories. The entire community honored beloved teacher and HPISD Fine Arts Head, Linda Raya, with a full-scale tribute in February. Raya, better known as ÒMama DramaÓ has inspired HPISD students for 40 years. Pulitzer Price winner and former student Doug Wright wrote the script and was master of ceremonies for Give my Regards to Linda!, a production which showcased performances by former and current students and a fanciful display of the many ÔhatsÕ she wears in her daily activities. The highlight of the evening was the dedication of the ÒLinda Raya StageÓ by La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas and the announcement of an endowment set up in her name. " The event included performances by the HPHS Bagpipes and Drum Corps, the Lads and Lassies and Highlander Strings students, and finally the procession of students featuring"those many hats she has worn throughout her"career. Ms. Raya sends her thanks to the many donors and everyone involved in the planning and the production of this ÒsecretÓ endeavor. And, yes, she was surprised! As always, we thank you for your support of these programs through your generous contributions to HP Arts. Financial pressure on our school district continues Ð please consider donating again to HP Arts, either via our website, or by including a donation with your HPISD registration payment in August. ! - Kathy Parade of ÒHatsÓ featuring current and former students of Ms. Raya Summer 2013 HPARTS The Artisan 2 HP Arts Ftes Fine Arts Teachers In January, HP Arts members hosted their annual reception to show their gratitude to the HPISD Fine Arts teachers who go the extra mile creating wonderful shows, concerts and exhibits that expand our students' educational experience. " Student artwork from each campus was showcased, and the entertain- Helen Williams, Dawson Orr, Rebecca Beasley, Linda Raya ment lineup included performances by the Lads and Lassies, Highlander Strings members and brass players from the Highlander Band. The event was organized by Sarah Clark and Ashley Meece and held at the home of Clark and her husband Mark Iola. Artwork by Kathryn Mootz (9) Director of Communications Helen Williams, Superintendent Dr. Dawson Orr, La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas President Rebecca Beasley and District Fine Arts Coordinator Linda Raya all attended. They wear commemorative 25th Anniversary HP Arts hats, given to all HPISD Fine Arts teachers. HP Literary Festival Features Marcus Zusak Where are They Now? Marcus Zusak, author of several novels including The Book Thief, was the keynote speaker at the 17th annual Highland Park Literary Festival in February. " Each year Lit Fest seeks to inspire and encourage students to celebrate language in its artfully written, spoken and sung formats. In addition to inviting wildly popular Australian novelist Zusak to speak to students and the community, this yearÕs two-day festival, "Write it Out" offered student assemblies with other noted speakers, and more than 75 small group workshops connecting HPHS students with novelists, journalists, poets, storytellers, playwrights, screenwriters and songwriters. The festival also included a student-run Open Mic Nite during which students shared readings, musings, poetry and musical performances. The festival concluded with a student writing contest and awards breakfast. The HP Literary Festival depends upon the cooperation of the HPHS English faculty and is made possible by generous donations from La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas, HP Arts, HPHS PTA and HPISD families. " 3# Summer 2013 HPARTS The Artisan As they often do, HPISD alumni appeared all over the arts news this year. " Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright, pictured below (HPHS theater student, Class of 1981) opened a Broadway musical, Hands on a Hardbody. Johnny Stimson (HPHS band member, Class of 2007) released a new single and music video ÒHuman Man,Ó " Luke Cof fee ( H P H S C l a s s o f 19 9 8 ) c o produced/acted in the feature film Language of a Broken Heart, and Stark Sands (HPHS theater student, Class of 1997) was nominated for a Tony Award for his star turn in this yearÕs Tony awardwinning musical Kinky Boots. HP Arts Awards 2012-13 And the Winner Is.... Anne Patterson Arts in Education Teacher Award Each year, HP Arts bestows its ÒArts in Education Teacher AwardÓ upon a HPISD non-fine arts teacher who has meaningfully incorporated arts within his or her curriculum. This yearÕs winner was Anne Patterson, pictured at left with Sarah Hardin. Ms. Patterson teaches Human Geography AP and U.S. History at HPHS, where she uses the arts to deepen her students' education experience. ÒReceiving this yearÕs Arts in Education Teacher Award is a great honor,Ó said Ms. Patterson in April." ÒComing from an American Studies background, I have always found it invaluable to weave the narrative of our nationÕs history through the threads of art, music, and prose." I am very grateful to HP Arts for their avid support of teachers who incorporate the arts within their curriculum.Ó Julia Waits and Trevor Drew Linda Raya HP Arts Scholarships This year, HP Arts was proud to award scholarships to Julia Waits and Trevor Drew. Waits studied theater and musical theater all four years at HPHS, and Drew was a member of the Highlander Strings, playing double bass. While Waits will attend Oklahoma City University in the Fall, planning to continue her theatrical studies, Drew will attend Texas Tech University to pursue his musical studies, with an eye toward eventually earning a masterÕs degree in music. Continued on Scholarship ceremony in May with Dr. Dawson Orr, Trevor Drew, Julia Waits, Kathy Palter and Kay Braly. page 12. Summer 2013 HPARTS The Artisan 4 HP Arts in the Classroom Three Little Pigs-Opera Style Music in Motion HP Arts was delighted to welcome back the Fort Worth Opera's Children's Opera Theatre to perform "The Three Little Pigs" at Armstrong and UP Elementary and "The Bremen Town Musicians" at Hyer Elementary. In March, HP Arts funded a music and dance presentation for more than 950 HPISD third- and fourth- graders at all four elementary schools. The students enj oye d t h e p e rformances, then were treated to a Q & A session with the performers. The set included a special prop in the shape of a large book that allowed the performers to flip a page to change the scene. Learn more about Children's Opera Theater at www.fwopera.org. ! Modern Day Romeo In February, fourth grade students at UP and Hyer schools enjoyed Shakespeare Dallas' production "What Fools These Mor tals Be" by Shakespeare on the Go! performers." This highenergy event engaged students with demonstrations of stage combat, scenes from comedies and tragedies, and a lesson in the life of William Shakespeare and his career. S tudents were surprised to learn the English language gained many new words, such as ÒelbowÓ, ÒblushingÓ, and ÒluggageÓ, from the works of the famous author and"playwright. To help students to relate to a scene from Romeo and Juliet, the actors simultaneously performed it in traditional verse and in modern-style Òhip hopÓ vernacular. Read more at www.ShakespeareDallas.com. Evie Ladin and Keith Terr y are t he dynamic duo that comprise Crosspulse, an educational organization based in San Francisco." Crosspulse is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to the creation, performance and recording of rhythm-based, intercultural music and dance. Crosspulse projects often involve body music, both traditional and contemporary. Body music (clapping, slapping, snapping, stepping and vocalizing) is an amalgam of composition and choreography--music you can" see and dance you can" hear. The various body musics of the world contain kinesthetic 'libraries' of memories and cultural heritage, and blur the lines between music and dance. Visit www.crosspulse.com to learn more. $$ Take-A-Seat $$ By purchasing a commemorative brass plaque for an auditorium seat in the HPHS PalmerAuditorium, your donation accomplishes two goals. It supports HP Arts and it celebrates the family, teacher, graduating senior or other person you choose to honor by placing their name on the plaque. Each commemorative plaque is $500 and can be purchased online at www.hparts.org/donate. Questions??? Please contact Rebeca Peterman: [email protected] Summer 2013 HPARTS The Artisan 6 HP Arts in the Classroom Schumann Jams with Coldplay Seeing Science Through Art The Wyeth String Quartet shared their passion for great classical and contemporary quartet music with members of the Highlander Strings Orchestra in January. Formed in 2004, is comprised of Fort Worth SymphonyÕs principal string players Laura Bruton, Adriana DeCosta, Leda Larson and Michael Shih. In October, Tony Delia, better known as the Butterfly Guy, wowed Hyer students with a perfect blending of art and science. Delia used poetry and beautiful illustrations to teach the science of the metamorphosis of the Monarch butterfly." His use of artistic teaching tools is one example of how HP Arts encourages art education in the service of "regular" curriculum. Shaking It with Shelton In addition to a full schedule of performances, the Wyeth String Quartet devotes time to special educational performances and teaching environments for young musicians. The QuartetÕs performance in the HPHS auditorium included a diverse line-up of pieces by classical composers Beethoven and Schumann, and contemporary Argentinian composer Piazzolla plus popular artists such as Coldplay. Quartet members answered questions from the young musicians and offered coaching during a concert clinic in preparation for the studentsÕ upcoming UIL Solo and Ensemble competition. In November, Mark Shelton visited all four elementary schools, asking students what they thought people may have used to make music before they had instruments. Hands shot up and children suggested, "Sticks! Bones! Rocks!" To illustrate this point, Shelton began the program by entering the auditorium from the rear while striking seats, walls, books, his shoe and various instruments. The students were amazed to hear how many different sounds the drumsticks made when used to strike or scrape different surfaces." Through a variety of instruments, Shelton demonstrated the range of percussion instruments, from loud and harsh to soothing and mellow.# Ninjas on the Improv Linda RayaÕs theater arts classes at Highland Park High School"recently"enjoyed a three-day visit from Shawn Patrello and Brad Newton of Kidprov,"an educational improvisation troupe." In the highly interactive workshops, the two actors challenged students to think creatively, use teamwork and interact with one another through improvisational games. Students had to think quickly while portraying Òa ninja on a trip to the grocery storeÓ or pretending to be Òsomeone interviewing an alien.Ó Students also practiced telling a story one paragraph, one line, and one word at a time. Several students challenged one another to die on stage in creative ways, including Hunter Feagans (featured at left) who demonstrated "dying by pencil." 7# Summer 2013 HPARTS The Artisan HP Arts in the Classroom Dance! Dance! Choreography Flurry of Florian In December, Linda RayaÕs Advanced Theater 4 class attended a three-day choreography clinic sponsored by HP Arts. Doug Florian has a reputation for high energy and he did not disappoint when he visited all four elementary schools in April. Florian is a prolific author, he has authored over 50 childrenÕs books to date ; including a NY Times bestseller and he has presented his poetry at the White House and the Museum of Modern Art. The instructor was Margo Linton, HPHS 2012 graduate, now a nursing student at Texas A&M. Margo was the assistant choreographer for Back to the 80Õs and performed as a main character in the schoolÕs One student saw an HP Arts board member in the hall and said, ÒThis is so fun! We just LOVE HP Arts!Ó As Janet Peters, Hyer Librarian, stated, Ò[Mr. Florian] spoke incredibly fast and I had told my students to fasten their seat belts because they were in for a fast ride through the world of poetry. musicals throughout her high school career. In the three-day workshop she taught the students a hip-hop dance to Move if You Want To and a musical theater number from Hairspray. Ms. RayaÕs students are FlorianÕs fast pace inspired Hyer Elementar y First Grader, Sadie Smythe to create her own poem (shown left) in FlorianÕs honor: ÒMr. Florian does his best and he always puts himself to the test. Why, oh why does he talk so fast? This is why...he doesnÕt want to be last!Ó receiving five hours of dual credit at Richland College by taking the Advanced Theater course. The participating Seniors then put their moves to work in the Senior play, Woody AllenÕs DonÕt Drink the Water. Music teacher extraordinaire, Jan Baker, has spent the last 15 years teaching music and much more to the students of University Park. She has also built one of the best music programs in elementary schools in the state! Our Fine Arts program is truly exceptional because of her tireless work. Most importantly, her present and former students praise the musicals as one of their best elementary memories! Who can forget Snow Day, 5 Golden Rings, Birds of a Feather, or The Princeless Princess? Lynda Carter, UP Principal, praised Jan saying, ÒI believe that in each of us there lives a creative love, a passion, a drive and desire to make a difference - in no one is that more evident than in the career of Jan Baker. A reflection of her work with children over 30 years represents both the crescendo..the high point...the magic of the melody and harmonious synchronization of the instrumentation that gives it soul...the comprehensive music program built lovingly by Ms. Baker will be a legacy to live up to. As her colleagues, we have such admiration for her. The best is yet to come...the memory of JanÕs work with our children will linger in our minds in the days and years ahead like the notes of a much-loved song.Ó Over the years, Ms. Baker has, with the help of HP Ar ts funding, brought many wonderful ar tsenrichment programs to UP and has encouraged the practice at the other campuses as well. And from Kathy Palter, ÒBoth of my (now giant) children loved Ms. BakerÕs classes and credit her with inspiring them to continue in various musical and theatrical pursuits.Ó We wish you all the best, Ms. Baker!
