Waterloo Station upgrade and improvement works
Reference: Wessex Capacity Improvement Programme 004 Waterloo Station upgrade and improvement works What this information sheet is about This information sheet describes the works we plan to undertake at Waterloo Station starting in December 2015. What we are planning to do Reference: Wessex Capacity Improvement Programme 004 What the works might mean for you The works we need to do and the equipment we need to use means some disturbance is unavoidable, but we will make every effort to minimise unnecessary impacts. Works will involve: • • To help manage the increasing number of passengers both today and in the future we will be undertaking the following works at Waterloo Station: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Renewing switches, crossings, ballast and timbers on the tracks approaching Waterloo Station Strengthening the railway bridges on the approaches to Waterloo Station Reconfiguringplatforms20to24 Decommissioning and upgrading signalling, power and telecommunications systems Upgrading track-side facilities for railway staff near Waterloo We will be starting these works on 24 December 2015. In addition, we need to demolish a concrete structure between the former Waterloo International Terminal roof and the Waterloo Station concourse roof and, subject to the approval of London Borough of Lambeth, we aim to start these works in February 2016. Switches • • Using heavy machinery to assist in removing ballast and cutting railway tracks Using diesel engineering trains to deliver and remove materials. These trains are noisier than the passenger trains that normally run in and out Waterloo Station but means there will be fewer construction vehicles on the road. Installing temporary lights on the tracks while the works are undertaken to make it safe for staff to work. Potential temporary road and footpath closures. Clear signs will identify alternative routes and we are working to minimise the number and duration of any temporary closures. Where possible we will maximise the use of the railway to carry materials to and from the construction site. Timbers Ballast Crossing Example of crossings, switches, ballasts and timbers on the approaches to Waterloo Station. How we are reducing disruption As a result of these planned engineering works there will be disruptions to services coming in to and out of Waterloo Station during the holiday period and on some weekends and evenings in 2016. Passengers are reminded to check train times and services before travelling at www.nationalrail.co.uk Safety is our number one priority and for this reason work of this type must be carried out while trains are not running. Under our licence conditions we are contractually obliged to work, whenever possible, at times that cause the least disruption to train services. This means carrying out a lot of our improvement works during the night and at weekends. Why we need to do these works Staff working on site will be briefed on working responsibly in the local community. Waterloo is the busiest station in the United Kingdom with more than 99 million passengers moving through the station a year and a train arriving or departing almost every minute during peak times. With passenger numbers continuing to rise, we have spent time developing a programme of improvement works that will help more people travel on trains into and out of Waterloo Station. The planned works detailed in this information sheet form part of a wider programme of improvement works at Waterloo which includes: We are committed to being a good neighbour.
