Each of the two joints has a spring‐loaded bolt action quick ‐ release mechanism with a notch to allow with a notch to allow the bolt to be held in the open position. Bolt in open position The same procedure also applies to collapsing the vehicle. When the Pon‐e is new, sometimes the joints are tight. This is normal, and they will loosen up after some use. If tightness continues, use “3 in 1” oil to lubricate the joints. j Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 The vehicle should be in its unfolded standing position in order to attach the handlebars. 8 Step 2: Attaching the Handlebars Position the h handlebars h dl b with h the h brake b k cables bl cro ossing once behind b h d the h steering column l and d again in front. This simple method insures that the left brake lever actually operates the left rear brake. If you find that your brakes are crossing, please start again and properly mount the handlebars. Note: the throttle cable should be taped to the rigght brake cable. Once yyour brake cables are properly routed you can secure the handlebars. Loosen the two bolts on the stem that fasten the stem to the stem post using the supplied 4mm Hex wrench. Slide the handlebar/stem assembly onto the stem post. Align the handlebar perpendicular to the front fork pushpin which should be facing in the direction the vehicle will be traveling. Center the bars and tighten (but do not torque) the two hex bolts evenly. The final torque will happen after properly aligning the handlebars later in the assembly procedure. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 9 Step 3: Attaching the Front Fork Putting the front fork/motor assembly on in the proper riding position requires a 5mm Hex wrench (supplied). First, turn the vehicle upside down so the fork post (arrow right) is aiming towards the sky. Note: place the plastic packaging support underneath the handlebar to avoid damaging da ag g tthee tthrottle. ott e You ou sshould ou d do tthiss procedure on carpet or soft surface to prevent scratching the handlebars or foot platforms. Loosen the two Hex bolts on the fork collar usin ng the supplied 5mm wrench. Simply align the l ki pin locking i with ith the th hole h l and d push h the th front f t fork f k onto t the th fork f k postt until til the th top t off the th fork f k and d the locking pin meet. Align the plastic fender witth the wheel and push the neck of the fender all the way in the fork collar (arrow). Tighten the Heex bolts on the fork collar. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 10 Step 4: Check the front fork/motor assem mbly cable alignment From the front fork/motor assembly, be sure the t motor cable is behind the front fork and fastened to the upper arm of the fork with a zip‐‐tie. Allowing a little slack, use one of the zip‐ ties provided to tie the motor cable to the outsiide edge of the cambering mechanism, making sure to direct the cable to the rear of the vehicle. Cut the excess zip‐tie material. Step 5: Check the handlebar alignment Turn the vehicle right side up and look down thee front post. Adjust the stem post by aligning the front wheel axle with the handlebar (You mayy need to loosen the stem bolts to adjust the handlebar alignment). alignment) Now all you need to do is use the 5mm Hex wrench to lock the handlebar in place. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 11 Step 6: Connecting the cables of the electtrical system a. Unscrew the bottom tray of the controller box to access the cable connectors using a 4mm wrench. a a. b. Connect the throttle cable. Connect the two–pin and the four‐ pin wire connectors from the throttle to the two–pin and four‐pin connectors from the controller labeled “Throttle.” b. c. Connect the motor. Connect the six‐pin connecctor from the motor to the six‐pin connector from the controller labeled “Motor” Motor. Connect the thrree wires from the motor to the same colored individual wires from the controller labeled “Mo otor.” Slide the clear rubber sleeve (arrow) that covers the metal connector portion of the wire down d the wire to expose the metal. Connect the wires together and slide the clear rubber sleeve back over the connection. This will insulate the connection as well as keep the connection togeth her. c. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 12 d. Connect the batteries. Connect the black connector from the controller to the black connector from the battery. y Note: You mayy hear a p pop p sound when the connection is initiallyy made. This is normal. d. e. Pack the wiring into the controller box and fasten the tray back into place. (NOTE: There are two unused connectors from the controller. One unused connector is attached to a green wire, the other is attached to black and yellow wires. These connectors are for future accessories.) Torque the bolt. e. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 13 Step 7: Raising the Handlebars Raise the handlebar riser tube by first unlockingg the quick release lever. Notice that there are round holes down the back of the handlebar riser tube providing a number of height‐locking positions. There is a spring loaded steel locking pin that snaps into these holes to provide a second level of safety while riding. Push the steeel pin in to release the riser tube and telescope the handlebars up to your preferred riding height. Make sure the quick release firmly locks the telescoping steering column in place. If the quick release is loose, use the adjustment finger nut to tighten the quick release. Properly adjusted, it requires a firm hand to close. After learning how to ride, you can adjust the handlebar position to better suit yyour p preferred ridingg posture, but don’t rock them too far back as to inhibit proper folding. You can also adjust the brake levers’ angle for riding comfort and ease of use. Quick Releaase P h i Push‐pin St 8 Adj ti th b k Step 8: Adjusting the brakes 1 inner pad outer pad The following are basic disk brake adjustment procedures. For a more in depth disk brake adjustment procedure, please visit technical support at www.trikke.com . Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 The image to the left shows a properly installed disk brake. There should be an even gap on either side of the disk brake rotor between the rotor and the inner and outer brake pad. Before adjusting the disk brakes, squeeze the brake levers a few times to stretch the brake cable and to properly seat the brake pads. 14 LLoosen the h set screw (2a (2 below, b l 25 2.5mm allen ll wrrench) h) to unlock l k the h inner i b k pad. brake d Screw S the h inner brake pad all the way in (a bolt at the side of o the inner pad body, 2b below), then back it off. The inner brake pad should be backed off until it doesn’t d touch the disk. A light rub is okay. 2a 2b 3 Back off the outer brake pad until it doesn’t tou uch the disk (3mm allen wrench bolt INSIDE the caliper lever bolt. Please do not unscrew the 5mm m bolt.) Again, a light rube is okay. Spin each wheel. If the disc wobbles when rotateed, mark the extreme point of the disc that is off and correct it by using your fingers to bend the disc in or out. Repeat this correction until the disc is “true” or no longer shows any wobble when you y spin it. (this is a common procedure because bicycle discs are very thin and may get deformed easily). 4a Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 4b 15 5 After truing the discs in step 4, you might need to make minor adjustments to the inner and outer p pads. When adjustments are final, use a 2.5mm allen wrench to lock the inner pad adjustment screw by tightening its locking bolt After some use, the brake pads will wear down a bit and seat properly with tthee d disc. sc Also, so, tthee b brake a e cab cablee will stretch. Re‐adjust your brakes using the fine adjustment screws at the brake lever and at the caliper as seen in steps 2 & 3. 7 6 PNEUMATIC TIRES ON THE PON‐E The front and rear tires on the Pon‐e com me with lower pressure from the factory for transportation reasons. You will need to adjust the tire pressure according to the rider rider’ss weight and riding preferences. Please do no ot exceed 80 psi (5.6 bar) maximum inflation. Example of recommended pressure: Rider’s weight/tires pressure: 170 lbs (77kg) tire pressure: front 50 – 70 pssi (5.1 bar)/rear 60‐80 psi (5.6 bar) Tire pressure affects the riding performance: lower pressure makes for a smooth but slower ride, ride higher pressure makes for a faster bu ut slightly bumpier ride. ride Check tire pressure once a week – use a tire gauge. Do not ride with low w pressure as this can damage the tires and pose more risk falling. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 16 Final Assembly Check List for the Pon‐e 1 When you think that you have completed thee assembly process, 1. process study the vehicle one more time and compare it to the photograph on pagge 6. 2. Check the bolts that secure the front fork and a handlebars. A good push and pull on the handlebars will immediately indicate whether or not the stem is properly secured. The handlebars should not be able to rotate on th he stem ‐‐‐ even with all of your weight pushing on it. 3. Do a final brake check by spinning both rear wheels. w They should spin freely until you apply tthee b brakes. a es You ou sshould ou d be ab ablee to vigorous go ouslyy squee squeezee tthee b brake a e levers e e s without t out tthee levers e es depressing all the way to the handlebar. 4. Check the folding mechanism to insure thatt both of the rear legs are locked in the riding position. Caution! Before riding for the first time, please e take several minutes to go over the Important Riding and Safety Tips on paages 3‐5 of this manual. For safety of friends and others who will try your new Pon‐e, it’s your responsibility to coach them about saafe riding. Make sure they read and understand all warnings and safety information in this owner’s manual before riding. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 17 Trikke Riding Manu ual – Safety Issues Now that you have successfully assembled you ur new Pon‐e vehicle, we will take you through some simple riding tips to help you get started. started These tips are focused on helping you with the manual side of powering your ultra light hybrid d vehicle. We always recommend that you ride with a helmet and safety gear. Pay special atten ntion to where you are riding, your proximity to other people, and especially your proximity to caars if you are learning to ride on a street or in a parking lot. Please exeercise respectful path etiquette where other riders and pedestrians p are on the same path. Athletes who w are accustomed to skiing or inline skating typically pick it up in a matter of minutes. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t climb on and speed away at 15 miles per hour. h Being and entirely new vehicle, it requires some new skills. Regardless of your athletic background, you can learn to ride a Pon‐e vehicle in a relatively short period of tiime ‐‐‐ usually in less than an hour. Th The greatest words of wisdom are: t t d f id “Keep going until you feel the sweet spot.” You’’ll know it when you feel it. With the Pon‐e, the electric power assist will help you to feel the sw weet spot. Try to mimic the feeling manually. If friends or family are riding for the first time, fo or their safety please take the time to properly instruct them and have them wear safety equipm ment. You are now embarking on a totally new experieence for mankind. It is once in a century that a truly l new technology h l emerges to change h our waay off thinking h k about b motion and d its application. l Conservation of angular momentum is the physical principle that the Pon‐e vehicle harnesses in order to transfer the rider’s energy into forward d momentum. It is the painstaking research and development by Trikke Tech over the period of 12 years that has optimized the melding of this p technology is now combined with an principle with a human powered vehicle. That propulsion electric motor assist on your Pon‐e. The combination of manual and electric power creates an P a practical commuter vehicle as well as an entirely new carving experience and makes the Pon‐e exciting iti recreational ti l vehicle. hi l The exclusive 3CV™ technology developed by Trikke Tech is the mechanism that makes this forw ward propulsion possible. The unique cambeering mechanism is elegantly simple yet provides the necessary rigidity, geometry and resistance to the rider’ss motion to allow for optimum control, rider control sp peed peed, comfort, durability and especially rider confideence. You are now the owner of the original Pon‐e . Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 18 The following five warning have been selected from f the list at the beginning of this manual for more in depth description and instruction. Pleaase read and understand these and all warnings b f before riding. idi Safety Issue #1: Riding in Wet Conditionss Because Trikke™ Tribred vehicles use electricity to o power the hub motor, riding in wet conditions is not recommended. Always keep in mind thaat the Pon‐e is an electric vehicle and as such common sense regarding safety around electricityy should be practiced. Additionally, the tires become slick when riding in n wet conditions and extreme caution should be used as rider control will be affected. Always try to t avoid wet riding conditions. Safety Issue #2: Weight Distribution When using the motor from a dead stop, it is im mportant to distribute your weight over the front wheel as shown below. This will ensure proper trraction of the front tire. Once the Pon‐e is in motion, it is quite easy to go over backwards by leaning back. Be careful to not lean back or distribute your body weight behind the rear wheels. This warning is especially important for riders with restricted movement or o reaction time. If you are standing still on the vehicle it is always recommended that you keep the t brakes on. If for some reason you feel yourself going off the back, putting the brakes on will help stop the veehicle from scooting out from under yyou, butt yyou should always y step off as a precaution. In order to brake more effectively, e distribute more of your weight overr the back wheels as shown below. Be carefful not to fall over backwards. The best way to insure that t you are always positioned properly on the vehicle and to minimize the potential forr going off the back is to distribute your weight evenly between Starting Braking the front and rear wheels.. Accordingly, you should not lean forward over or onto the handlebars either but rather move your toes up to the front of the foot platforms and alw ways let the balls of your feet and toes carry most of your weight. Avoid rocking back on your heelss, pulling back on the handlebars or sticking your butt out behind them ((in the case of stickingg yyour butt out)) yyou will inevitablyy un‐weight g the front wheel. Besides the risk of going off the back, the otherr reason for evenly distributing your weight is to insure that your front wheel has plenty of traction n, which leads us to the next safety issue. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 19 Safety Issue #3: Handlebar Etiquette Properly managing the handlebars and especially how far to the left and right you turn them while you are riding is vital to your safety. Because thee front wheel has been designed to trail the fork, the handlebars have a tendency to turn on theiir own in the direction that you are leaning the vehicle. Unlike a bicycle, which wants to go in i a straight line, the front wheel will actually accentuate a turn. Because of this condition, new w riders need to pay special attention to not over steer. Over steering can cause the handlebars to cross up or “jack knife” which will stop the vehicle suddenly and possibly cause an injury. Always maintain firm control of the handlebars with both hands and never ride with one or no o hands. The Pon‐e requires both hands on the handlebars at all times. First time riders have a tendencyy to muscle the handlebars and throw their weight g from side to side. What manually propels the Trikke carving vehicle forward is a combination of turning and leaning the steering column, not jerking or thrustting the handlebars from side to side. It is best to think in terms of more rocking and less turning. Long L smooth turns are best for beginners. Safety Issue #4: Riding Downhill Because the Pon‐e is a totally new machine wiith completely foreign riding characteristics, we strongly recommend that you take your time when w familiarizing yourself with the vehicle and gradually test the performance boundaries off its riding characteristics. This is especially important before attempting to ride up or down n hills. Both hill climbing and downhill riding are advanced and require that you become a strong competent rider before even attempting hills ‐‐‐ up or down. As far as downhill riding is concerned, we strongly recommend that you only ride down hills in which you can control your speed with w turns as you traverse the hill. Riding hills at speeds that require constant braking is not recommended for three reasons: you can get up to speeds where your braking distances are too lon ng to stop you safely, you can fall causing serious injury or death, and you will quite simply wear do own your brake pads and rear wheels long before their expected functional life expectancy. The Pon‐e will accelerate quickly down even the mildest grades, so only ride at speeds and in an environment that are suitable for your skill level. Safety Issue #5: Safety Equipment Always wear safety equipment, especially a helm met. A helmet is a must when riding a Pon‐e or any wheeled vehicle for that matter. We also reecommend that you wear elbow and knee pads, especially for children and inexperienced riders. As stable a platform as the vehicle is, there are always environmental considerations that might catch c you by surprise like cracks in the pavement or other vehicles. READ AND UNDERSTAND THE ASSEMBLY Y, MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY SECTIONS OF THE OWNER’S MANUAL BEFORE RIDIN NG. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AND PAY ATTENTION TO ALL WARNINGS. Visit our website at www.trikke.com for information, replacement parts, new Trikke products, and custom Trikke accessories like carry bags, hats, t‐shirts, t high performance wheels, water bottles, backpacks and more. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 20 Trikke Riding Manuall ‐ How to Ride Manually Step 1: Mount the Trikke First, find some smooth, flat and open terrain to ride on. Parking lots, basketball courts or tennis courts are perfect places to learn. It is beest to spend plenty of time riding on flat ground before attempting hills ‐‐‐ up or down, and do not n assume that you already know how to ride a carving vehicle. Even though it has familiar feaatures like handlebars and hand brakes, carving vehicles have unique riding and balance charaacteristics that require a familiarization period. The vehicle is easy to stand on. We recommend d that you step up onto the vehicle and spend a few minutes getting used to the riding position n the braking system, n, system and especially the range with which you can rock the steering column n left and right. This is especially important because it is exactly this rocking capability that propels p the vehicle forward. Get used to letting your arms do the rocking ‐‐‐ not your body. Step 2: Rock the Trikke We recommend that you push off a few times like a scooter and simply ride around for a few minutes to get used to the feel. It is especially im mportant to establish a good riding position that properly balances your weight between the fro ont and rear wheels. First time riders have a tendency to pop unnecessary wheelies. This caan be dangerous because you can fall back and injure yourself. Scooting your toes to the front of the platforms and riding on the balls of your feet will help to distribute your weight to the front wheel. Also, properly set, the handlebar height should force you to lean a bit forward. This riding posture will give you much better stability, control, and quick braking response. Nevver lean back or pull back on the handlebars. You can acttually start moving without touching your feet to the ground d by rapidly turning the front wheel back and forth. You will begin to pickup speed but will peak at only a a hour. Here is where it all comes together! few miles an You are no ow turning the wheel back and forth to generate f forward d mo otion and d establishing bl h a rhythm. h h No matter how h bad you might be as a dancer, the Trikke experience is very n movement and timing. Stick with it. You’ll get rhythmic in it. The beeauty of what drives the Trikke carving vehicle’s design forw ward is the addition of one final ingredient: ROCKING THE T STEERING COLUMN LEFT AND RIGHT AS YOU TU URN THE WHEEL LEFT AND RIGHT. A LEFT HAND TUR RN GETS A LEFT HAND ROCK. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 21 When you add the rock to the roll you are essentially putting th he rear wheels in a subtle yet responsive position to generaate forward thrust. It will take a few minutes to catch on to t a coordinated combination of turning and rocking, but to those wh ho have any skiingg or inline skating experiencce you will imm mediately feel the similaritiees. Your speed should pickup dramatically, and yo ou will begin to thrust forward with each turn. turn Pleasse note that it does not require that you make tight turns. Rather, you should allow the vehicle to kind of o steer itself in a more graceful curving path. Manyy first time riders tend to exaggerate the turning of the handlebars h thinking that they need to continue with tight turns. Not so! The degree of your turns should dimin nish as you begin to add the rocking motion and as your speed increeases. Turniing too can hard causee the vehiccle to “Jack Jackk‐ k Knifee” potentially causiing you to fall. Take your time. Whatever you do, do not muscle the hand dlebars. Experienced riders use a light touch on the hand dlebars mostly for balance. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 22 Step 3: Weight Transfer By this time you have dramatically increased yourr speed and should be getting to know where the sweet spot is. When we say “sweet spot,” we mean m the part of your turn where most of your propulsion is generated. Typically, you will feel the t outside wheel (your left rear wheel during a right hand turn) drift away from you as you rocck the vehicle to the right. If you apply a little weight or a kick to that left foot as you turn you will accelerate even more. A seasoned rider can actually propel the vehicle up to 18 miles per hour or better on flat ground…which is really moving. The combination of these techniques will be new w to you for sure, but be assured that riding time will help you to create a smooth and beautifully coordinated c movement. You will be able to travel for miles with long graceful strides and rapid sprrints. The beauty of it is that you will always be looking ahead for places to carve and to add th he skiing dimension to what would have been a straight line ride on any other vehicle. Step 4: Hill Climbing Don’t D ’t be b afraid f id to t tackle t kl hills, hill but b t make k a point i t off graduating d ti to t steeper t and d steeper t climbs li b as your riding skills increase. We always say to new riderrs that hill climbing is an acquired skill. You can try it, but you’ll probably frustrate yourself more thaan anything if you don’t first learn and master the basic skills of riding on flat ground. The Trikke™ ™ carving vehicle does slow down dramatically as you begin to climb a hill, requiring a new and phyysically challenging technique to be added to your growing Trikke repertoire. Hill climbs require much more upper body finessee ‐‐‐ especially on steep grades. grades If you are riding in an area that has unavoidable hills, we recommend climbing as much as you can just to challenge yourself and then just walk or run it to the top. Hill climbing really brings you full circle as you u actually diminish the rocking and increase the tightness of your turns as the steepness of the hill’s grade increases. It becomes almost like a series of rapid punching motions to force the fro ont wheel around in order to gain a few more feet of pavement. pavement Whatever you do, take your time to graduate to o steeper and steeper hills. In the end, the most challenging of hill climbs will be attainable giving you a full body workout rarely found in any other sport…if any at all. Step 5: Downhill Please read the Safety Issue #4 on page 20 of this manual. recommendations about riding downhill. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 It best describes our 23 Step 6: Proper Braking Technique Because the Pon‐e vehicle has brakes on both h rear wheels, it is important to learn how to optimize their effectiveness with some simple rules. First, always apply both brakes together and evenly. Second, dispersing your weight evenly to o each rear wheel is crucial for maximum braking effectiveness. If you lift your weight from one foot platform while braking you will cause that wheel to lose traction with the ground. Finally, do o not lean on the handlebars while braking. Step 7: Adding Upper Body Power Once you get up to speed with normal riding technique t you can move into a more advanced practice of twisting your upper body and thrustin ng the vehicle into each lean with your arms and shoulders. Essentially, you are throwing your up pper body weight in the direction of your turn in order to gain more speed. This technique is especially useful when accelerating or hill climbing, and it definitely comes after learning the basics of riding a carving vehicle. The whole learning process will be a gradual development of our skills with each time that you ride, but the beauty of it is that you will always learn something new with each ride. Enjoy your new hybrid carving vehicle. Reminder: Trikke carving vehicles are designed to roll forward only. Please refrain from rolling backw wards as there is the potential of damaging the trailing arms of the caarving vehicle. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 24 ELECTRIC C Users Guide OPERATION 1. To turn the power pack on, press the green n button on the throttle in for 3‐seconds, then release. The battery life indicators on thee throttle will illuminate – all the way green indicates a full charge. The lights on the th hrottle are a rough estimate of the battery life. There is also a battery life indicator on the baattery cap (arrow), which will remain illuminated when the battery key is in the “on” position. Throttle Battery Life Indicators On/Off Button 2 Th 2. There is i a speed d limiter li it switch it h (arrow) ( ) on the th controller t ll box b cap. When Wh turned t d on (on ( = “1” position, off = “2”), the switch will limit the speed s of the Pon‐e to 12mph (19km/h). When turned off, the top speed of the Pon‐e is 17mph (27 km/h), though the Trikke CV can be accelerated to a faster top speed. Beginners should use the speed governor and limit th i top their t speed d to t 12mph 12 h or less l until til they are comfortable enough to switch to the faster speed. 3. To power the motor, simply turn the throttle. The throttle is sensitive to the amount it is turned and will increase the power as it is turned further. Use caution when starting from a complete stop and only turn the throttle slightly. Also, begin with your weight forward. This ensures proper traction of the front wheel when power is supplied to it. When in motion, it is more appropriate to t turn th throttle the th ttl further. f th O Once i in motion, return your weight to the balanced position. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 25 4. To remove the battery from the Pon‐e, push the key in and turn to the unlock position. Pull the handle of the battery up toward the han ndlebars. The battery should slide freely up the b battery raill untill the h battery b is loose. l Reverse these h instructions to installll the h battery. b 5. Make sure that the front wheel is pointed straaight before applying power to the Pon‐e. 6. When crossing the street, allow enough time for a slow acceleration. 7. Riders should allow a generous amount of breaking room as a faster top speed requires more room to stop. 8. Riders should avoid riding on wet or flooded terrain. t The Pon‐e can withstand a small amount of moisture, however it is not recommended d for riding in wet conditions. In the event the vehicle gets wet, open all the flaps to the pow wer pack assembly and place the entire system in a clean dry area to dry the components th horoughly. Do not operate the Pon‐e with wet components. t 9. Riders should avoid jumping, curbs, speed bu umps, grass, gravel and sand as these may cause the rider to lose control of the Pon‐e. Possiible impacts can damage the motor and battery brackets. t motor by carving up the hill. 10. When riding up a hill, it is important to assist the 11. To turn off the Pon‐e, press the green button n on the throttle for 3‐seconds. The battery life indicator lights on the throttle will turn off – signaling s that the system is off. The Pon‐e should be turned off when not in use to avoid accidental movement of the vehicle. vehicle 11. The Pon‐e will automatically shut off after 5 minutes m of inactivity. 12. The Pon‐e will automatically stop supplyingg power to the motor if the motor stalls. An example of stalling would be to place the wheel motor against a wall and then turn the throttle. Another example would be stalling while climbing a steep hill without carving. The motor will be unable to turn, even though po ower is being supplied. This action will cause the electrical components to overheat and fail. It is important to avoid stalling the motor. 13 Very high outside temperatures may cause the 13. t controller to shut down before the batteries are empty. It is very important to keep the vents to the batteries open to allow maximum cooling to the controller. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 26 14. When the batteries are just about empty, there t will be an intermittent pause in the power supplied to the motor. The operator will need to release the throttle and then turn the throttle again to re‐apply the power. Wheen this happens, there is approximately 0.5 mile (0.8km) of life left in the batteries. The operator should assist the Pon‐e with the standard Trikke CV carving technique to conserve as much power as possible and head to the nearest charging station. perating the Pon‐e. Riders should use courtesy 15. Rider etiquette is very important while op while riding and share the roads and sidewaalks on which they ride. Pedestrians always have the right of way. When in traffic, stay to t the right and stop carving to avoid causing confusion to the drivers passing by. CHARGING 1. The Pon‐e should need to charge for no moree than 5 hours before its first use, or when fully discharged. 2. To charge the battery, first connect the chargging unit to the plug located on the key side of the battery casing near the top. The chargingg unit supplied with the Pon‐e is a multi‐Voltage charger, so plug the charging unit into any norrmal 110V or 220V socket. 3. When the battery is charging, the light on the charger will be red. Once the battery is fully charged, the light on the charger will turn green. Note that when the Pon‐e is unplugged from the charger, the light on the charger will be green. 4. The Lithium‐Ion battery included in the Pon‐‐e vehicle should last for 600 Full Cycles. A full cycle is a full discharge and recharge. 5. Good charging practice would be to plug thee battery into the charger at every opportunity and keep the battery topped off. 6. If the Pon‐e will be unused for an extended period of time, it should be topped off once a month. 7. Always unplug the charger by the plug (arrow) and not the wire. 8. It takes 0.4 kWh to fully charge the discharged d 36V battery, 0.65 kWh for a 48V battery. PARKING o the brake lever of the Pon‐e. Pull the brake 1. Use the locking parking brake feature found on lever toward the handle to engage the brakes.. Push the pin down to secure the brake lever in the locked position. Release the brake lever while pushing the locking pin down so that the tension of the brake lever holds the locking pin n in place. To release the locking pin, squeeze the brake lever toward the handle again and the locking pin will spring out of the locked position. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 27 2. To park the Pon‐e, turn the handlebars all the way to one side id and d lean l th vehicle the hi l in i the th opposite direction. For example, turn the handlebars all the way to the left, then lean the vehicle to the right. 3. Another possibility is to lean the Pon‐e against a wall. 4 Always try to find a ledge for 4. the front wheel to rest against to avoid unexpected movement due to a slope, etc. Engage the locking brake levers to assist securing and parking the Pon‐e. 5 When a ledge is unavailable, 5. unavailable find a flat surface to minimize unwanted movement. 6. In the event the above methods are not working, lay the Pon‐e down. FOLDING Folding your Pon-e is exactly the same as before. See the folding instructions earlier in this manual for more information on how to fold your Pon-e. RANGE 1. The range of the Pon‐e’s power pack depen nds on many things including topography, rider weight, wind, temperature, how much the rider assists, how much throttle the rider applies, and the speed setting of the vehicle (Econo vss. Speed). 2. To maximize the range of the Pon‐e, set th he speed switch to the 12mph (19km/h) Econo setting, avoid climbing hills for extended periods p of time, assist the vehicle as much as possible using standard carving propulsion, an nd use less throttle. Trikke Tribred Pon‐e Owner's Manual – V3 01/2 20/10 28 Mainteenance TIRES 1.Tire pressure should be between 60‐70 psi in th he front wheel. 2.Periodically check tires for wear and/or faults.
