Welcome to Baby Bounce - Mackay Regional Council
Welcome to
Baby Bounce
Welcome
Welcome to Baby Bounce, presented by the Young
People’s Services team, Mackay Regional Council Libraries
Baby Bounce is a program aimed at babies aged 0 - 18 months,
their parents and carers. The 30 minute session of songs, rhymes,
movement and reading encourages valuable one-on-one time
between parent/carer and child and introduces language and
literature into everyday routines from an early age. Baby Bounce is a
great networking opportunity for parents/carers.
Included in this booklet:
• Useful tips on getting the best out of Baby Bounce
• Words to songs sung at Baby Bounce. Share songs your child is
enjoying at the moment, and we may include them in future sessions.
• Take Baby Bounce home
• The benefits of reading to your baby
• Popular book titles for you and your baby - available through your local library
• Links to useful websites.
Getting the best out of Baby Bounce:
Baby Bounce is fun!
Join in, interact and have fun with your baby. If your baby needs
a break, pick them up for a cuddle or a feed. If your baby is
mobile and wants to have a crawl around you are encouraged to
play with some of the toys and books provided. Babies benefit
from social interactions with the group and as the songs and
movements continue around them they are still absorbing many
new sounds and rhythms. Your baby will join in when they are
ready.
Being face to face allows your baby to make eye contact
with you, watch your face and learn from your facial expression,
actions and words.
Singing slowly helps your baby hear the words and see the
actions.
Once a song is familiar your baby will participate in some
way, depending on your baby’s age and stage of development.
A very young baby (under 6 months) becomes quiet, or
increases their activity by kicking their feet, turning their head
towards you, looking at you, smiling at you, and, even starting to
coo or make noises when you sing.
Babies start to imitate facial expressions at a young age, so your
baby may watch you and copy your facial expression as you
sing!
Older babies (between 6-12 months) can grasp objects
and enjoy holding and shaking a rattle or banging on a drum.
Older babies enjoy making sounds
back and forth with their parents/
caregivers and may “sing” along
with you!
Older babies try to imitate your
facial expression, actions and
sounds, or move their bodies to the
rhythm. At around 8 - 9 months of
age, babies start to clap their hands
and enjoy doing this while you sing.
Pause and wait once you know how your baby might
participate during a familiar song. You can help them by pausing
and waiting during key moments in the song. A good place to
pause and wait is at the end of a line of music. Pause before
you say the last word and see if your baby reacts.
When singing “The Eensy Weensy Spider”, pause before saying
“out” (“Down came the rain and washed the spider... (WAIT)
out”). If you wait and look expectantly at your baby, they may
look at you and smile or move, or an older baby may make a
sound or do an action. Give your baby a long time to react and
respond – at least ten seconds. If you’ve waited and your baby
does not react, fill in the word/action yourself, with emphasis.
Perhaps your baby is not ready to participate yet, or it could be
that the song is not familiar to your baby.
Help your 9 - 12 month old baby imitate your actions by
taking their hands and guiding them through the actions with
you.
Your baby may allow you to take their hands and help them
clap during the song once you have demonstrated this yourself.
Continue if your baby likes it. Singing with your baby creates a
fun experience so your baby wants to interact and have fun.
Repeat the song if your baby likes it, sing the song over
and over again. Repetition helps babies become familiar with
the words, sounds, and actions, and know what comes next in
the song.
Watch carefully for attempts to communicate as
babies communication can be subtle and easy to miss. Watch
your baby’s facial expression, eye gaze, movements, and
sounds when you sing. Your baby may be trying to participate
in their own way. Anything your baby does during the song is
communication.
If your baby turns away, this may mean they do not want to sing
anymore. Or if your baby says “ahhh” when you pause at a key
moment in the song, this may be an attempt to sing along.
Watch for subtle messages and treat them as meaningful,
even if you are not sure. Doing this will reinforce your baby’s
communication and encourage them to do more.

you take your little mouth and you go kiss, kiss, kiss,
you kiss your Mum and Dad.
Take Baby Bounce home with you and sing when your
baby is calm, alert and awake and it is easier to focus on you.
These moments will encourage your baby’s interest.
During daily routines sing while changing your baby’s
nappy, dressing, feeding your baby or going for a walk in the
stroller. Daily routines are regular and provide opportunities
for your baby to hear songs over and over again. Repetition
helps your baby learn songs so they can anticipate words and
actions and participate with gestures and sounds.
http://www.hanen.org/Helpful-Info/Fun-Activities/How-toSing-with-Babies-The-Hanen-Way.aspx
When singing with your baby, watch for signs that your baby
has had enough or is getting tired. If your baby starts to fuss,
turns their head away, or does not look at you, it may not be
the best time to sing. Try again another time or perhaps try
a soothing lullaby that will calm your baby and lull them to
sleep.

Baby’ DVD from your local library.
The Benefits of Reading to Your Baby
It is never too early to start reading to your baby. Research
shows that children whose parents read to them when they
are very young; learn to speak, read and write more easily.
Babies may not understand the words you read to them, but
love hearing the sound of your voice and learn that reading
is fun. Reading is a wonderful opportunity to bond with your
baby.
Here are some tips to get you started:
• Read with your baby every day.
• Read when baby is happy and interested in what is
happening.
• If baby gets tired or restless, stop and try again later.
• Make up your own story rather than using the words on the
page.
• Babies like books with bright, clear and simple pictures.
Babies enjoy books about familiar animals, food, toys and
other babies! Board books are great for babies as they can
grab the pages, put them in their mouth and throw them. This
is ok, it is how they learn.
• Make your voice as interesting as possible. Use different
voices for the characters in the story. If there is an animal in
the story, make the sound the animal makes. This helps make
reading fun and enjoyable for your baby.
Baby Bounce is one of the most rewarding moments you
spend with a child and one that you will treasure for years to
come.
