Medicare has several different parts. Knowing how they work
could save you or someone you
love money-and could even help
you get better care.
Medicare Parts A and B: Part
A covers hospital visits, skilled
nursing facilities and some home
health care. Part B covers doctor
visits, outpatient visits and durable medical equipment. Together,
Parts A and B are referred to as
“traditional”
fee-for-service (FFS)
Medicare, or
sometimes
as “Original
Medicare.”
It is estimated that FFS
Medicare
only covers
about
50
percent of
the health
care costs
incurred by
beneficiaries. That is why some
people who choose FFS Medicare
also obtain a Medicare Supplemental plan. This type of health
insurance is also known as Medigap coverage. Medigap plans do
just that-cover the “gaps” that FFS
Medicare does not cover. However, Medigap plans can be extremely costly. As a result, many seniors
are attracted to the broader coverage and more predictable costs of
Medicare Part C, commonly called
Medicare Advantage.
Extra Benefits
Medicare Advantage plans offer
extra benefits such as vision coverage, annual physicals and chiropractic, and many also include
coverage for medications. These
plans help with your coordination
of care across the provider spectrum. A newer type of Medicare
Advantage plan, the private feefor-service plan, gives members
the freedom to obtain care from
any doctor or hospital that accepts
payment from Medicare, with no
network restrictions and no need
for referrals.
Part D is prescription drug coverage which started in early 2006.
Both Part D and Medicare Advantage plans are offered through
private health care companies,
either as separate options or together in one plan. Some of the
plans do not have premiums while
others do have monthly premiums.
Those plans can vary depending
on where you live and the services covered.
“It all sounds confusing at first,”
said Mark El-Tawil, chief Medicare
officer of Health Net, Inc. “But you
don’t need to be an expert to figure
out what’s best for you. The important thing is to understand your
personal options, and to choose
the one that will provide you with
the most comprehensive benefits
at the lowest cost.”
Dates To Keep In Mind
In addition to the Medicare alphabet, there are some numbers
you should keep in mind as well.
You are

will automatically get a Medicare

Once you are on Medicare, you

that is offered in your area. Most
beneficiaries can choose between
dozens of plans. To see your options, go to www.medicare.gov.
The dates from January 1 to
March 31 are called the Open Enrollment Period. During this time,
you can make one “lateral move”
to a different plan of the same
type. For example, if you have a
plan with drug coverage, you can
switch to a different plan that also
has drug coverage.
“With the wide array of Medicare options, you have the ability
to customize your coverage to really meet your needs,” said Health
Net’s El-Tawil. He recommends
one other alphabetical aid, saying, “In reviewing your options, the
most important factors are often
the 4 Cs-Cost, Customer Service,
Convenience and Coverage.”
Start by looking for reasonable costs for monthly premiums
and deductibles, along with low
co-payments for your particular
prescriptions. Look at customer
service. Are the people at the plan
helpful? Do they understand your

Importance of Neighborhood Watch
Sheriff Deputy Anita Limbrick reminds our residents how the Neighborhood Watch can help reduce crime in Hawaiian Gardens. Neighborhood Watch meetings are held in the courtyard of the C. Robert
Lee Recreation Center. Members of the watch serve as additional
eyes and ears for the Sheriff’s Department by reporting crime or unusual activity in the community. The next meeting will be held December 12 at 6 p.m. in the C, Robert Lee Center. For more information

Holiday Hazard Checklist
Keeping Christmas Safe
The holidays should be a magical time for children. Yet each year,
hospital emergency rooms treat about 8700 people for injuries, such
as falls, cuts and shocks, related to holiday lights, decorations and
Christmas trees.
In addition, Christmas trees are involved in about 400 fires annually, resulting in 20 deaths, 70 injuries and an average of more than $15
million in property loss and damage. Young children are particularly
at risk for injury from sharp objects, such as glass ornaments, or from
well-intentioned gifts of toys that are not appropriate to their age. Keep
the season merry with this list of safety tips.
Safer Trees and Decorations
When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label “Fire Resistant.” Although this label does not mean the tree won’t catch fire, it
does indicate the tree will resist burning and should extinguish quickly.
When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is
green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt of a fresh
tree is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree
should not lose many needles.
When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces and
radiators. Because heated rooms dry live trees out rapidly, be sure to
keep the stand filled with water. Place the tree out of the way of traffic
and do not block doorways.
Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh
wood. This allows for better water absorption and will help to keep
your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.
Use only noncombustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree.
Choose tinsel or artificial icicles of plastic or nonleaded metals. Leaded materials are hazardous if ingested by children.
Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens.
Always use nonflammable holders and place candles out of children’s
reach.
Bright Ideas for Lights
Indoors or outside, always use lights that have been tested for
safety by a recognized testing laboratory that indicates conformance
with safety standards. Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections,
and throw out damaged sets. Use no more than three standard-size
sets of lights per single extension cord. Never use electric lights on a
metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty
lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted. Before
using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified
for outdoor use.
Fasten outdoor lights securely to trees, house walls, or other firm
supports to protect the lights from wind damage. Use insulated staples to hold strings in place, not nails or tacks. Or run strings of lights
through hooks (available at hardware stores). Plug all outdoor electric
decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid
potential shocks. Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the
house. The lights could short out and start a fire.
Friendlier Fireplaces
Use care with “fire salts,” which produce colored flames when
thrown on wood fires. They contain heavy metals that can cause
intense gastrointestinal irritation and vomiting if eaten. Keep them
away from children. Do not burn wrapping papers in the fireplace. A
flash fire may result, as wrappings ignite suddenly and burn intensely.
Before lighting any fire, remove all greens, boughs, papers, and other
decorations from fireplace area. Check to see that the flue is open.
Trouble-Free Toys
Before buying a toy or allowing your child to play with a toy that he
has received as a gift, read the instructions carefully. If the toy is appropriate for your child, show him how to use it properly. Follow recommended age ranges on toy packages. Toys that are too advanced
could pose a safety hazard for younger children. To prevent both
burns and electrical shocks, don’t give young children (under age ten)
a toy that must be plugged into an electrical outlet. Instead, buy toys
that are battery-operated.
Children under age three can choke on small parts contained in
toys or games. Government regulations specify that toys for children
under age three cannot have parts less than 1 1/4 inches in diameter
and 2 1/4 inches long.Children under age 8 can choke or suffocate on
uninflated or broken balloons. Remove strings and ribbons from toys
before giving them to young children.
Watch for pull toys with strings that are more than 12 inches in
length. They could be a strangulation hazard for babies.

para que en tu casa le brindes a tu bebé un ambiente seguro y pases

Para decorar el pinito o árbol navideño:
• No compres esferas de cristal, cerámica o algún otro material que
al romperse se corte. En las tiendas encuentras esferas de diferentes
tamaños y colores que son de plástico, de unicel forradas de tela, o
simplemente de lazo decorados.
• Una opción para decorar el pino puede ser el uso de muñecos de
peluche, como los ositos con gorra, renos, muñecos de nieve, Santas, entre otros.
• También puedes utilizar figuras hechas de fieltro o fomy, como
botas, pinitos, coronas, angelitos, etc.
• Hay algunos accesorios que son de gran ayuda y que puedes
hacerlos tu misma o comprarlos hechos, como los moños de listones
(organza, celoseda, terciopelo, yute), follajes, nochebuenas artificiales, limpiapipas de colores, entre otros.
• No decores con bastones de dulces o paletas, no es común pero
si lo haces piensa que es una tentación permanente para tu pequeño,
él puede tomarlos y comerlos a cada rato. Además, son un fuerte
atractivo para las hormigas o alguno que otro bichito.
Para el nacimiento:
• Procura colocarlo en un lugar que no alcance tu pequeño, ya
que por lo general los nacimientos que se utilizan están hechos de
cerámica, barro e incluso de cristal. Recuerda que son materiales que
pueden provocar daño al romperse.
• Aunque también puedes hacerte de un nacimiento hecho con
otros materiales que no lastiman y utilizarlos mientras tu hijo crece,
como la cera, el fieltro, el plástico, la madera y otros.
• Si utilizas paistle o eno, musgo o algún otro tipo de follaje; no
lo dejes al alcance del niño y checa que si el nacimiento está en un
lugar alto, no quede nada colgado ni en el piso. Ten en cuenta que
podría encontrarlo o jalarlo y llevárselo a la boca.
• No coloques piezas demasiado pequeñas, puede llevárselas a la
boca.
Para las luces exteriores e interiores:
• Si a tu pinito o nacimiento le vas a poner luces, colócalos cerca
de la conexión de electricidad y procura que no se vea, que quede
